Calibration Of Multibeam Echo Sounders: A Comparison Between Two Methodologies, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber Nov 2012

Calibration Of Multibeam Echo Sounders: A Comparison Between Two Methodologies, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Multibeam echo sounders (MBES) are widely used in applications like seafloor imaging, fisheries, and habitat mapping. Calibration of acoustic backscatter is an important aspect of understanding and validating the performance of a MBES. Combined transmit/receive beampattern calibrations were performed on a 200 kHz Reson Seabat 7125 MBES in the acoustic tank of the University of New Hampshire utilizing two different methodologies. The first methodology employs fixed standard target spheres and a high accuracy/high resolution rotation mechanism. This method, similar to that proposed by Foote et al ["Protocols forcalibrating multibeam sonar", J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117(4), 2005], is designed for a …

Potentially Polluting Marine Sites Geodb: An S-100 Geospatial Database As An Effective Contribution To The Protection Of The Marine Environment, Giuseppe Masetti, Brian R. Calder, Lee Alexander

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Potentially Polluting Marine Sites (PPMS) are objects on, or areas of, the seabed that may release pollution in the future. A rationale for, and design of, a geospatial database to inventory and manipu-late PPMS is presented. Built as an S-100 Product Specification, it is specified through human-readable UML diagrams and implemented through machine-readable GML files, and includes auxiliary information such as pollution-control resources and potentially vulnerable sites in order to support analyses of the core data. The design and some aspects of implementation are presented, along with metadata requirements and structure, and a perspective on potential uses of the database.

A Personalised Needs-Led Group Approach To Induction: Perceptions Of Early Academics In A University School Of Education, Joy Jarvis, Claire Dickerson, Leo Chivers, Chris Collins, Libby Lee, Roger Levy, Dianne Solly Nov 2012

A Personalised Needs-Led Group Approach To Induction: Perceptions Of Early Academics In A University School Of Education, Joy Jarvis, Claire Dickerson, Leo Chivers, Chris Collins, Libby Lee, Roger Levy, Dianne Solly

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Members of staff joining a school of education often have extensive experience in practice but not in academia and the university setting may present a complex diversity of roles, ways of working, values and goals. Colleagues may face issues of understanding the organisational structure and culture, changing identities, and concerns about their academic reading and writing abilities. This paper presents a study designed to examine the efficacy of a personalised needs-led self-study group approach to induction for experienced professionals joining a University School of Education. The approach was new to both current staff members and the four early academic …

The Change In Sraffa's Philosophical Thinking, John B. Davis Nov 2012

The Change In Sraffa's Philosophical Thinking, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The availability of Piero Sraffa's unpublished manuscripts and correspondence at Trinity College Library, Cambridge, has made it possible to begin to set out a more complete account of Sraffa's philosophical thinking than previously could be done with only his published materials and the few comments and suggestions made by others about his ideas, especially in connection with their possible impact on Ludwig Wittgenstein's later thinking. This makes a direct rather than indirect examination of Sraffa's philosophical thinking possible, and also shifts the focus from his relationship to Wittgenstein to his own thinking per se. I suggest that the previous …

Climate Finance For The Middle East And North Africa: Confronting The Challenges Of Climate Change, Smita Nakhooda, Alice Caravani, Prachi Seth, Liane Schalatek Nov 2012

Climate Finance For The Middle East And North Africa: Confronting The Challenges Of Climate Change, Smita Nakhooda, Alice Caravani, Prachi Seth, Liane Schalatek

Egypt & Libya

This brief considers the scope and objectives of dedicated international public finance directed to the region, drawing on Climate Funds Update data. It finds that most international public climate finance has been directed to a small number of large projects in Egypt and Morocco using concessional loans. These two countries receive 80% of total approved climate finance in the region, largely from the World Bank administered Clean Technology Fund. No climate finance has been directed to the richest fossil fuel exporters in the region such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Although good examples of …

Spectral Engineering Of Optical Fiber Preforms Through Active Nanoparticle Doping, T. Lindstrom, E. Garber, D. Edmonson, T. Hawkins, Y. Chen, G. Turri, M. Bass, J. Ballato

Publications

Europium doped alkaline earth fluoride [Eu:AEF2 (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba)] nanoparticles were synthesized and systematically incorporated into the core of modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD)-derived silica-based preforms by solution doping. The resulting preforms were examined to determine the impact of the nanoparticles chemistry on the spectroscopic behavior of the glass. The dominant existence of Eu3+ was demonstrated in all preforms, which is in contrast to conventional solution doped preforms employing dissolved europium salts where Eu2+ is primarily observed. Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime measurements indicated that the nanoparticles composition is effective in controlling, at a local chemical and structural …

Evolutionary Star-Structured Heterogeneous Data Co-Clustering, Amit Salunke Nov 2012

Evolutionary Star-Structured Heterogeneous Data Co-Clustering, Amit Salunke

Theses

A star-structured interrelationship, which is a more common type in real world data, has a central object connected to the other types of objects. One of the key challenges in evolutionary clustering is integration of historical data in current data. Traditionally, smoothness in data transition over a period of time is achieved by means of cost functions defined over historical and current data. These functions provide a tunable tolerance for shifts of current data accounting instance to all historical information for corresponding instance. Once historical data is integrated into current data using cost functions, co-clustering is obtained using various co-clustering …

This paper describes Preformed Particle Gel (PPG) treatments for in-depth fluid diversion in four injection wells located in the northern section of the Lamadian reservoir, Daqing oilfield, China, which is a sandstone reservoir with thick heterogeneous pay zones. Forty-six producers were connected to the four treated injectors with an average water cut of 95.4% before PPG treatments. A large volume (more than 1 000 m3) of PPG suspension with concentrations of 1 900-2 500 mg/L and particle sizes of 0.06-3.0 mm was injected into each well, each injection spanning approximately four months. The injection PPG suspension volumes range …

Exploring Strategies For Converting Illinois Wesleyan University From Dual-Stream To Single-Stream Recycling, Megan George '13 Nov 2012

Exploring Strategies For Converting Illinois Wesleyan University From Dual-Stream To Single-Stream Recycling, Megan George '13

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

The purpose of this study was to answer the question: how can a transition from dual-stream to single-stream recycling be implemented effectively as a way of increasing the rate of recycling on the Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) campus? The problem of waste in the United States is of increasing concern for many reasons. For the Bloomington-Normal, Illinois community-- where IWU is located-- the imminent filling of the local landfill site inspired a community-wide push towards improving waste diversion strategies, and in this case: recycling programs. This research focused on both analyzing the current recycling program at IWU and examining other …

Stress Monitoring Of Post-Processed Mems Silicon Microbridge Structures Using Raman Spectroscopy, Lavern A. Starman, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Inherent residual stresses during material deposition can have profound effects on the functionality and reliability of fabricated Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices. Residual stress often causes device failure due to curling, buckling, or fracture. Typically, the material properties of thin films used in surface micromachining are not well controlled during deposition. The residual stress; for example, tends to vary significantly for different deposition methods. Currently, few nondestructive techniques are available to measure residual stress in MEMS devices prior to the final release etch. In this research, micro-Raman spectroscopy is used to measure the residual stresses in polysilicon MEMS microbridge devices. This …

Approximate Mean-Field Equations Of Motion For Quasi-Two-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates, Mark Edwards, Michael Krygier, Hadayat Seddiqi, Brandon Benton, Charles W. Clark Nov 2012

Approximate Mean-Field Equations Of Motion For Quasi-Two-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates, Mark Edwards, Michael Krygier, Hadayat Seddiqi, Brandon Benton, Charles W. Clark

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a method for approximating the solution of the three-dimensional, time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) for Bose-Einstein-condensate systems where the confinement in one dimension is much tighter than in the other two. This method employs a hybrid Lagrangian variational technique whose trial wave function is the product of a completely unspecified function of the coordinates in the plane of weak confinement and a Gaussian in the strongly confined direction having a time-dependent width and quadratic phase. The hybrid Lagrangian variational method produces equations of motion that consist of (1) a two-dimensional (2D) effective GPE whose nonlinear coefficient contains the width …

The Characterisation And Numerical Modelling Of Viscoelastic Polyurethane Foams For Use In Custom Wheelchair Seating, Conor Briody Nov 2012

The Characterisation And Numerical Modelling Of Viscoelastic Polyurethane Foams For Use In Custom Wheelchair Seating, Conor Briody

Doctoral

Viscoelastic polyurethane foam is widely used in wheelchair cushions as it offers good pressure relieving capabilities. However, the behaviour of this material is largely un-quantified, by comparison with conventional elastomeric materials.
Consequently, in many cases, inadequate cushioning is provided to wheelchair
users with complex seating requirements. This thesis characterises and
numerically models viscoelastic polyurethane foam.
Temperature-dependent static compression and simple shear test procedures are conducted on a range of viscoelastic polyurethane foams and selected results are utilised to identify Ogden Hyperfoam material model parameters. Time-dependent creep and stress relaxation test procedures are conducted and test results are used in conjunction …

Swift Follow-Up Observations Of Candidate Gravitational-Wave Transient Events, P. A. Evans, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present the first multi-wavelength follow-up observations of two candidate gravitational-wave (GW) transient events recorded by LIGO and Virgo in their 2009-2010 science run. The events were selected with low latency by the network of GW detectors (within less than 10 minutes) and their candidate sky locations were observed by the Swift observatory (within 12 hr). Image transient detection was used to analyze the collected electromagnetic data, which were found to be consistent with background. Off-line analysis of the GW data alone has also established that the selected GW events show no evidence of an astrophysical origin; one of them …

Quantum Dynamics In Atomic-Fountain Experiments For Measuring The Electric Dipole Moment Of The Electron With Improved Sensitivity, Benedikt J. Wundt, Charles T. Munger, Ulrich D. Jentschura Nov 2012

Quantum Dynamics In Atomic-Fountain Experiments For Measuring The Electric Dipole Moment Of The Electron With Improved Sensitivity, Benedikt J. Wundt, Charles T. Munger, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An improved measurement of the electron electric dipole moment (EDM) appears feasible using groundstate alkali atoms in an atomic fountain in which a strong electric field, which couples to a conceivable EDM, is applied perpendicular to the fountain axis. In a practical fountain, the ratio of the atomic tensor Stark shift to the Zeeman shift is a factor μ ~ 100.We expand the complete time-evolution operator in inverse powers of this ratio; complete results are presented for atoms of total spin F = 3, 4, and 5. For a specific set of entangled hyperfine sublevels (coherent states), potential systematic errors …

Theory Of High Harmonic Generation For Probing Time-Resolved Large-Amplitude Molecular Vibrations With Ultrashort Intense Lasers, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, R. R. Lucchese, C. D. Lin Nov 2012

Theory Of High Harmonic Generation For Probing Time-Resolved Large-Amplitude Molecular Vibrations With Ultrashort Intense Lasers, Anh-Thu Le, Toru Morishita, R. R. Lucchese, C. D. Lin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a theory that incorporates the vibrational degrees of freedom in a high-order harmonic generation (HHG) process with ultrashort intense laser pulses. In this model, laser-induced time-dependent transition dipoles for each fixed molecular geometry are added coherently, weighted by the laser-driven time-dependent nuclear wave packet distribution. We show that the nuclear distribution can be strongly modified by the HHG driving laser. The validity of this model is first checked against results from the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a simple model system. We show that in combination with the established quantitative rescattering theory this model is …

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Clean And Disordered Contact Process In Three Dimensions, Thomas Vojta Nov 2012

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Clean And Disordered Contact Process In Three Dimensions, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The absorbing-state transition in the three-dimensional contact process with and without quenched randomness is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. In the clean case, a reweighting technique is combined with a careful extrapolation of the data to infinite time to determine with high accuracy the critical behavior in the three-dimensional directed percolation universality class. In the presence of quenched spatial disorder, our data demonstrate that the absorbing-state transition is governed by an unconventional infinite-randomness critical point featuring activated dynamical scaling. The critical behavior of this transition does not depend on the disorder strength, i.e., it is universal. Close to …

Investigating The Feasibility Of Integrating Pavement Friction And Texture Depth Data In Modeling For Indot Pms, Rebecca S. Mcdaniel, Karol J. Kowalski

JTRP Technical Reports

Under INDOT’s current friction testing program, the friction is measured annually on interstates but only once every three years on non-interstate roadways. The state’s Pavement Management System, however, would require current data if friction were to be included in the PMS. During routine pavement condition monitoring for the PMS, texture data is collected annually. This study explored the feasibility of using this pavement texture data to estimate the friction during those years when friction is not measured directly. After multi0ple approaches and a wide variety of ways of examining the currently available data and texture measuring technologies, it was determined …

Updating, Upgrading, Refining, Calibration And Implementation Of Trade-Off Analysis Methodology Developed For Indot, Qiang Bai, Samuel Labi

JTRP Technical Reports

As part of the ongoing evolution towards integrated highway asset management, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), through SPR studies in 2004 and 2010, sponsored research that developed an overall framework for asset management. This was intended to foster decision support for alternative investments across the program areas on the basis of a broad range of performance measures and against the background of the various alternative actions or spending amounts that could be applied to the several different asset types in the different program areas. The 2010 study also developed theoretical constructs for scaling and amalgamating the different performance measures, …

Evaluation Of Effects Of Fire On The I-465 Mainline Bridges—Volume Ii, Thomas G. Bradt, Brent Rankin, Robert Connor, Amit H. Varma Nov 2012

Evaluation Of Effects Of Fire On The I-465 Mainline Bridges—Volume Ii, Thomas G. Bradt, Brent Rankin, Robert Connor, Amit H. Varma

JTRP Technical Reports

Currently, when a bridge has been involved in a fire loading, DOT and inspectors are called to determine if the bridge is passable to traffic. Inspectors must close the bridge for an indefinite period of time to take material samples from the bridge and have them tested to find if the strength of the materials meets AASHTO specifications. This procedure can take time and severely impact the economy of surrounding municipalities due to bridge closure. When a bridge is visually distorted, the recommendations of what must be done to repair the bridge may be intuitive; but when no apparent deformations …
