Emission Changes Resulting From The San Pedro Bay, California Ports Truck Retirement Program, Gary A. Bishop, Brent G. Schuchmann, Donald H. Stedman, Douglas R. Lawson
Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications
Recent US EPA emissions regulations have resulted in lower emissions of particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen from heavy-duty diesel trucks. To accelerate fleet turnover the State of California in 2008 along with the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach (San Pedro Bay Ports) in 2006 passed regulations establishing timelines forcing the retirement of older diesel trucks. On-road emissions measurements of heavy-duty diesel trucks were collected over a three-year period, beginning in 2008, at a Port of Los Angeles location and an inland weigh station on the Riverside freeway (CA SR91). At the Port location the mean fleet age …

Very large true three-dimensional (3D) point datasets, as opposed to the previously common 2.5D data sets, are progressively more common nowadays, such as from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). Increasingly, attempts are made to exploit these 3D point data sets beyond mere visualization. However, current Spatial Information Systems provide only limited 3D support. Even commercial systems advertising in-built, 3D data types provide only minimal functionality. Particularly, there is no effective means of indexing large 3D point datasets, which is crucial for efficient analysis and engineering usage. Also many datasets are information rich (e.g. contain color or some other associated semantic …

On Projection-Invariant Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, Brendan Goldsmith
On Projection-Invariant Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, Brendan Goldsmith
Articles
A subgroup P of an Abelian p-group G is said to be projection-invariant in G if Pf is contained in P for all idempotent endomorphisms f. Clearly fully invariant subgroups are projection invariant, but the converse is not true in general. Hausen and Megibben have shown that in many familiar situations these two concepts coincide. In a different direction, the authors have previously introduced the notions of socle-regular and strongly socle-regular groups by focussing on the socles of fully invariant and characteristic subgroups of p-groups. In the present work the authors examine the socles of projection-invariant subgroups of Abelian p-groups.
The Generalised Zakharov-Shabat System And The Gauge Group Action, Georgi Grahovski
The Generalised Zakharov-Shabat System And The Gauge Group Action, Georgi Grahovski
Articles
The generalized Zakharov–Shabat systems with complex-valued non-regular Cartan elements and the systems studied by Caudrey, Beals and Coifman (CBC systems) and their gauge equivalent are studied. This study includes: the properties of fundamental analytical solutions (FAS) for the gauge-equivalent to CBC systems and the minimal set of scattering data; the description of the class of nonlinear evolutionary equations, solvable by the inverse scattering method, and the recursion operator, related to such systems; the hierarchies of Hamiltonian structures. The results are illustrated on the example of the multi-component nonlinear Schr¨odinger (MNLS) equations and the corresponding gauge-equivalent multi-component Heisenberg ferromagnetic (MHF) type …
Formalising Human Mental Workload As Non-Montonic Concept For Adaptive And Personalised Web-Design, Luca Longo
Formalising Human Mental Workload As Non-Montonic Concept For Adaptive And Personalised Web-Design, Luca Longo
Books/Book Chapters
Web Design has been evolving with Web-based systems becoming more complex and structured due to the delivery of personalised information adapted to end-users. Although information presented can be useful and well formatted, people have little mental workload available for dealing with unusable systems. Subjective mental workload assessments tools are usually adopted to measure the impact of Web-tasks upon end-users thanks to their ease of use and are aimed at supporting design practices. The Nasa Task Load Index subjective procedure has been taken as a reference technique for measuring mental workload, but it has a background in aircraft cockpits, supervisory and …
An Investigation Into Feature Selection For Oncological Survival Prediction, Dmitry Strunkin, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
An Investigation Into Feature Selection For Oncological Survival Prediction, Dmitry Strunkin, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
In machine learning based clinical decision support (CDS) systems the features used to train prediction models are of paramount importance. Strong features will lead to accurate models, whereas as weak features will have the opposite effect. Feature sets can either be designed by domain experts, or automatically extracted for unstructured data that happens to be available from some process other than a CDS system. This paper compares the usefulness of structured expert-designed features to features extracted from unstructured data sources in an oncological survival prediction application scenario.
Investigating Insight As Sudden Learning, Ivan K. Ash, Benjamin D. Jee, Jennifer Wiley
Investigating Insight As Sudden Learning, Ivan K. Ash, Benjamin D. Jee, Jennifer Wiley
Psychology Faculty Publications
Gestalt psychologists proposed two distinct learning mechanisms. Associative learning occurs gradually through the repeated co-occurrence of external stimuli or memories. Insight learning occurs suddenly when people discover new relationships within their prior knowledge as a result of reasoning or problem solving processes that re-organize or restructure that knowledge. While there has been a considerable amount of research on the type of problem solving processes described by the Gestalt psychologists, less has focused on the learning that results from these processes. This paper begins with a historical review of the Gestalt theory of insight learning. Next, the core assumptions of Gestalt …

"Ultracold" Neutral Plasmas At Room Temperature, N. Heilmann, J. B. Peatross, Scott D. Bergeson
Faculty Publications
We report a measurement of the electron temperature in a plasma generated by a high-intensity laser focused into a jet of neon. The 15 eV electron temperature is determined using an analytic solution of the plasma equations assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium, initially developed for ultracold neutral plasmas. We show that this analysis method accurately reproduces more sophisticated plasma simulations in our temperature and density range. While our plasma temperatures are far outside the typical "ultracold" regime, the ion temperature is determined by the plasma density through disorder-induced heating just as in ultracold neutral plasma experiments. Based on our results, we …
Passageworks: The Impact Of A Social-Emotional And Spiritual Learning Program Among Adolescents, Randi Hirschberg
Passageworks: The Impact Of A Social-Emotional And Spiritual Learning Program Among Adolescents, Randi Hirschberg
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Adolescence is a crucial developmental period in one's life. Unfortunately, our nation's youth are afflicted by high rates of risky behavior and psychiatric disorders that impact their ability for a successful future. Research indicates that school-based preventative social-emotional learning (SEL) programs can play a large role in improving the lives of adolescents. Despite this, few documented SEL program evaluations have examined their applicability to the fast growing Latino population. Latinos have been identified as more vulnerable to the problems among our youth than any other group. Identifying SEL programs that hold potential for decreasing these vulnerabilities is critical. Additionally, SEL …

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore how restorative practices could help increase the social fabric within communities in order to help solve complex community problems. Although literature on restorative practices is bountiful for the purposes of restorative justice and restorative practices in schools, there is little literature on how to use restorative practices to create more restorative communities or neighborhoods. For the purpose of this study I looked at the issue of violence and safety within a particular community and implemented a framework of restorative practices that focused on asset based community development and building healthier relationships. I …

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation explores the various ways in which the multiple leaders portrayed in the science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009) navigate extreme conditions of continual change. In addition, the dissertation contains a discussion of the larger narrative themes of love, forgiveness, redemption, and embracing the Other as principles effective leaders must cultivate. Through an interpretation of this specific popular media text, a deeper emotional sensitivity to and understanding of leadership, positive and negative, during extreme crises is gained. Furthermore, the series serves as a vehicle through which viewers can reflect on and engage in their own self-awareness about issues …
Facilitating Emergence: Complex, Adaptive Systems Theory And The Shape Of Change, Peter Martin Dickens
Facilitating Emergence: Complex, Adaptive Systems Theory And The Shape Of Change, Peter Martin Dickens
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study used Principal Component Analysis to examine factors that facilitate emergent change in an organization. As organizational life becomes more complex, today’s dominant management paradigms no longer suffice. This is particularly true in a health care setting where multiple sources of disease interacting with each other meet with often-competing organizational priorities and accountabilities in a highly complex world. This study identifies new ways of approaching complexity by embracing the capacity of complex systems to find their own form of order and coherence. Based on a review of the literature, interviews with hospital CEOs, and my organization development practice experience …

Deep Learning Using Genetic Algorithms, Joshua Lamos-Sweeney
Deep Learning Using Genetic Algorithms, Joshua Lamos-Sweeney
Theses
Deep Learning networks are a new type of neural network that discovers important object features. These networks determine features without supervision, and are adept at learning high level abstractions about their data sets. These networks are useful for a variety of tasks, but are difficult to train. This difficulty is compounded when multiple networks are trained in a layered fashion, which results in increased solution complexity as well as increased training time. This paper examines the use of Genetic Algorithms as a training mechanism for Deep Learning networks, with emphasis on training networks with a large number of layers, each …
The Impact Of Polarization On The Performance Of All-Optical Flip-Flops, Claudio Ippolito
The Impact Of Polarization On The Performance Of All-Optical Flip-Flops, Claudio Ippolito
Theses
This thesis experimentally characterizes the polarization dependence of an all-optical flip-flop (AOFF) based on a resonant-type semiconductor optical amplifier. Previous demonstrations of such an optical-memory device have exhibited poor on-off contrasts of around 3 dB (2:1). Our work maps out the dependence of the bistable hysteresis on the injected polarization state for the first time and clearly shows how to optimize the on-off contrast to achieve 8 dB. Beyond this optimization technique, it also demonstrate a novel technique to achieve and on-off contrast exceeding 30 dB (1000:1).

Remote Sensing Of Tanzanian Volcano Oldoinyo Lengai: Verifying Detection Methods Of Flow Activity, Scott Richard Frystak
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Every day volcanoes erupt with varying magnitudes across the globe, and remote sensing used to keep track of volcanic activity would be a useful application. One promising use of remote sensing to understand volcanoes at a distance is to distinguish gaseous or lava flow activity. Current methods for differentiating volcanic activity with remote sensing have only been applied at Mt. Etna, and research is still needed to verify that the detection of gaseous or lava flow activity is possible at volcanoes with different compositions. The subject of this study, the Oldoinyo Lengai volcano, is a natrocarbonatite stratovolcano with drastically different …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This mixed methods study examined the experiences that four middle school specialEducation teachers had implementing an onlineEducation program called Study Island in their reading classes. The teachers wanted to increase their students' reading decoding and comprehension skills and also wanted to prepare their students for their state's standardized test. Many male students today are underachieving academically and lack motivation to excel in their studies. Because boys comprise the majority gender in most resource classes (i.e., only specialEducation students), this study focused on the male population in order to determine whether an onlineEducation program with a game component such as Study …
Problem-Solving: Individual Factors Predictive Of Resistance To Functional Fixedness And Effects Of Einstellung, James W. Erikson
Problem-Solving: Individual Factors Predictive Of Resistance To Functional Fixedness And Effects Of Einstellung, James W. Erikson
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to replicate and expand two experimental procedures that have been fundamental to the understanding of problem solving and rigidity: functional fixedness and effects of Einstellung . Functional fixedness can be described as an instance in which negative transfer occurs and there is perceptual blindness†to the versatility of an object. Einstellung is the tendency to utilize a more complicated and habitually primed procedure at the expense of simpler methods. Results were analyzed to identify individuals resistant to these natural effects and to determine the non-clinical personality factors as assessed by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator …

High Resolution Determination Of Nanomolar Concentrations Of Dissolved Reactive Phosphate In Ocean Surface Waters Using Long Path Liquid Waveguide Capillary Cells (Lwcc) And Spectrometric Detection, Louise A. Zimmer, Gregory A. Cutter
OES Faculty Publications
In the last decade, long path length, low volume, liquid waveguide capillary cells (LWCC) in conjunction with conventional nutrient auto-analyzers have been applied to determinations of nanomolar levels of phosphate, nitrate, and nitrite in oligotrophic waters. This article reports a high resolution, real-time, continuous method for nanomolar dissolved reactive phosphate measurements in ocean surface waters with data logging every 30 seconds for up to 16 consecutive hours. Surface seawater is pumped continuously from a shipboard underway tow-fish unit to a helium gas-segmented, continuous-flow, nutrient auto-analyzer modified with a 250 cm LWCC. To circumvent baseline instability due to reagents, a parallel …

Δ13c Is A Signature Of Light Availability And Photosynthesis In Seagrass, Xingping Hu, David J. Burdige, Richard C. Zimmerman
OES Faculty Publications
We explored the role of light-saturated (carbon-limited) photosynthesis on δ¹³C of turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum Banks ex Konig) populations from the clear, blue waters of the Great Bahama Bank and the turbid, green waters of Florida Bay using field observations and radiative transfer models. Consistent with numerous previous observations, leaf δ¹³C decreased significantly with water depth in both regions. However the δ¹³C for Bahamas turtlegrass was 3 parts per thousand heavier than that for Florida Bay turtlegrass at equivalent depths, and broadband irradiance explained even less of the δ¹³C variations than depth. Instead, leaf δ¹³C showed a stronger relationship to …

Dissolved cobalt (dCo), iron (dFe) and aluminum (dAl) were determined in water column samples along a meridional transect (∼31°N to 24°N) south of Bermuda in June 2008. A general north-to-south increase in surface concentrations of dFe (0.3-1.6 nM) and dAl (14-42 nM) was observed, suggesting that aerosol deposition is a significant source of dFe and dAl, whereas no clear trend was observed. for near-surface dCo concentrations. Shipboard aerosol samples indicate fractional solubility values of 8-100% for aerosol Co, which are significantly higher than corresponding estimates of the solubility of aerosol Fe (0.44-45%). Hydrographic observations and analysis of time series rain …
