Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This study explored how student leadership practices (SLP) are essential in shaping learners’ development and their continued engagement with higher education institutions. This research investigates the direct and indirect effects of SLP on affective commitment (AC), employing self-efficacy (SE), individualism (IND), and collectivism (COL) as mediating variables. Data were collected through a structured online survey administered to undergraduate students from 11 public universities in Guangxi, China. The study received 436 responses and 387 valid cases. The Student Leadership Practices Inventory, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Individualism–Collectivism Scale, and the Affective Commitment Scale were all used as standardized tools. The analysis …

The Core-Modulation Architecture (Cma): A Structural Overview Of A 14-Paper Research Program (Preprint), Griselda Poe

Publications and Research

This document provides a structural overview of the Core-Modulation Architecture (CMA), a 14-paper research program on cognition, communication, and AI interaction.

The series specifies the conditions under which cognition operates, terminates, fails, and generates structure. Rather than describing cognition by its contents (beliefs, emotions, decisions), it defines cognition through its underlying architecture: constraint-governed processing across layers with distinct termination conditions.

The framework introduces a layered model consisting of Core processing (constraint preservation and structural coherence) and Modulation (affective calibration and social interface adjustment), extended by a Prior layer as the source of constraints. Across the series, phenomena such as miscommunication, …

From Arrival To Opportunity: A Policy Analysis For Supporting Newly Arrived English Learners In California, Valeria Gabrielli, Stephanie Mendoza Hernandez Mar 2026

From Arrival To Opportunity: A Policy Analysis For Supporting Newly Arrived English Learners In California, Valeria Gabrielli, Stephanie Mendoza Hernandez

School of Public Policy Capstones

Newly arrived immigrant students, commonly referred to as “newcomers,” represent a notable portion of the English Learner (EL) population in California’s K–12 public schools. As of Fall 2023, the California Department of Education reported that newcomers comprised 3.27% of total student enrollment. Although enrollment is projected to decline in the near term, the potential for future increases highlights the need for sustainable, evidence-based support systems. This study examines how California K–12 public schools with large EL populations provide academic and trauma-informed support services to newcomer students, with a particular focus on early intervention in grades K–5. Using the Bardach policy …

Using The Diary–Interview Method With Time-Constrained Professionals: The Case Of Journalists And Harassment, Ilmari Hiltunen, Reeta Pöyhtäri, Kaarina Nikunen

The Qualitative Report

This article presents a methodological reflection on the diary–interview method’s value and application when used with professionals whose schedules are both demanding and unpredictable, drawing on the authors’ insights from a study examining the harassment and intimidation of journalists. Our experiences demonstrate that combining solicited diary entries with recurring interviews can yield substantial advantages over using either method alone. Diaries are particularly well suited to capturing rich, situated data and individual perspectives, adding distinctive value especially when exploring sensitive or personal issues. Interviews that probe these accounts and revisit incidents in greater depth, in turn, enhance understanding of participants’ emotions, …

“Where All Is Playtime And Pleasure”: Feeling The Otherworldly In Late Medieval Literature, Anna K. Mcgill Mar 2026

“Where All Is Playtime And Pleasure”: Feeling The Otherworldly In Late Medieval Literature, Anna K. Mcgill

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I present intra-, inter-, and extra-textual felt responses to encounters with the otherworldly as described in Late Medieval texts as a lens through which to consider personal, social, and national imaginative potential surrounding contemporary issues across genres and disciplines. I argue that the use of otherworlds and otherworldly agents as both personally and rhetorically compelling analogues through which contemporary issues can be explored. I start my discussion of the felt impacts of encounters with the Arthurian otherworldly, with a particular focus on Glastonbury and Arthur’s alleged grave there, and how they transmit affects of sovereign authority. Next, …

Clinically Aligned Long-Context Transformers For Cross-Platform Mental Health Risk Detection, Aditya Tekale, Mohammad Masum Mar 2026

Clinically Aligned Long-Context Transformers For Cross-Platform Mental Health Risk Detection, Aditya Tekale, Mohammad Masum

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Social media platforms contain rich but noisy narratives of psychological distress, creating opportunities for early mental health risk detection. However, existing datasets capture heterogeneous constructs such as suicide risk severity, depression diagnosis, and DSM-5 symptom presence, and most prior models are trained and evaluated on a single corpus, limiting their clinical alignment and cross-dataset generalizability. In this study, we fine-tune a domain-specific long-document transformer, AIMH/Mental-Longformer-base-4096, for binary mental health risk detection (risk vs. no risk) using two clinically aligned Reddit datasets: the C-SSRS Reddit corpus and the eRisk 2025 depression dataset. To handle long user histories, we introduce an LLM-based …

Does Concurrent Completion Of A Computer Task Interfere With Talking? Comparing Younger And Older Adults, Emma Simpson Hymas

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the impact of a computer-based divided attention task on spoken language and compares the impact between younger (18–30 years) and older (55–82 years) adults. Sixty adults participated in a speaking task and two computer tasks which varied in difficulty. The Level 1 computer task involved highlighting each instance of the word “the” and the Level 2 computer task involved highlighting each instance of the word “the” while also underlining each instance of the word “a”. Each task was completed alone and then two computer tasks with different levels of difficulty were completed concurrently with a procedural discourse …

When Ai Writes The Doctoral Thesis: Reclaiming The Oral Defence As A Learning Development Intervention, Valerie A. Storey Mar 2026

When Ai Writes The Doctoral Thesis: Reclaiming The Oral Defence As A Learning Development Intervention, Valerie A. Storey

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Large language models have fundamentally challenged traditional methods of verifying doctoral competency as AI-generated text becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from human scholarship. This paper argues that thesis committees and doctoral supervisors must reclaim the oral defence as a critical checkpoint for assessing authentic threshold crossing rather than a ceremonial rite of passage. Drawing on historical examples from medieval oral disputations through to the rise of written theses, this paper asserts the necessity of returning to rigorous oral assessment. Given the limitations of detection technologies and the growing use of AI in thesis writing, oral defences must move from confirmatory …

Evaluative Expressions In Spanish Digital Discourse: A Sociopragmatic Study Of Vaya/Qué Constructions, Jason L. Meier Mar 2026

Evaluative Expressions In Spanish Digital Discourse: A Sociopragmatic Study Of Vaya/Qué Constructions, Jason L. Meier

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines the sociopragmatic patterns of Spanish evaluative constructions involving qué/vaya in contemporary digital discourse. Drawing upon politeness and impoliteness frameworks by Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson (1978, 1987) and Jonathan Culpeper (1996), this research observes how speakers deploy use these constructions within public discourse to negotiate stance. The data consists of posts from X (formerly Twitter) and comments from YouTube videos, selected to showcase naturally occurring instances of (im)politeness across social media. These constructions are key to determining how society navigates expression and form within public discourse. In addition to the modern findings, a focused analysis of …

District Leadership Influence On The Sustainability Of Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Jessica Hessler Mar 2026

District Leadership Influence On The Sustainability Of Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Jessica Hessler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dual language bilingual education programs operate within policy environments that often constrain their long term viability, despite their deep historical roots in the United States. This qualitative study examined how district/central office leadership systems supported the sustainability of these programs. While prior research has emphasized school site collaboration between principals and teachers, limited attention has been given to the district/central office level leadership systems and strategies that shaped program coherence, implementation, and endurance. Guided by a framework integrating social justice leadership with principles of sustainable leadership, the study examined the research question: How do district or central office leadership systems …

Can New Materialisms Transcend Linguistic Theory? An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Words And Things, Lixing Li Mar 2026

Can New Materialisms Transcend Linguistic Theory? An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Words And Things, Lixing Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The rise of new materialisms in Western academia in the twenty-first century has prompted a critical reexamination of the linguistic paradigm that dominated the humanities and social sciences in the twentieth century. Proponents of new materialism contend that the potential of linguistic constructivism has largely been exhausted and that scholarly attention should now shift toward the ontology of material entities. From this perspective, the relationship between language (words) and matter (things) has been reimagined and reinterpreted. Drawing on speculative realism and agential realisms as key examples, this article examines how new materialisms critique linguistic theory and their limitations. Speculative realism …

Computer Science and Engineering Datasets - Archive

Distinct from the task of predicting the author of a document (authorship attribution), we focus on addressing the issue of how to estimate the similarity between the written language styles of authors. To do so, we present a dataset of metadata derived by asking human annotators, who were presented with three documents, to identify which two were written by the same author and which was written by a different author. The dataset has over 400 such annotations, creating a companion to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) customer review dataset, laying the groundwork for crowdsourcing applications to other natural language processing …

Retrieval Interference In The Processing Of Relative Clauses: Evidence From The Visual-World Paradigm, Matthew W. Lowder, Gwynna Ryan Mar 2026

Retrieval Interference In The Processing Of Relative Clauses: Evidence From The Visual-World Paradigm, Matthew W. Lowder, Gwynna Ryan

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although object-extracted relative clauses (ORCs) are more difficult to process than subject-extracted relative clauses (SRCs), there is still substantial disagreement regarding the cognitive mechanisms underlying these effects. The current visual-world eyetracking experiment took a novel approach to this problem by examining whether ORC-SRC differences would emerge at the matrix verb during the processing of spoken sentences containing these structures. Fixation patterns at the onset of the matrix verb revealed a tendency for participants to fixate the picture representing the subject of the sentence in both ORCs and SRCs. Crucially, participants considered the picture corresponding to a competing noun more while …

In today's digital era, speech acts are not only realized through face-to-face communication but also manifested in online interaction. One of the prominent platforms where online interaction occurs is Instagram. Nowadays, Instagram functions not only as a medium for sharing personal moments but also as a powerful business tool for promotion. This study examines (1) the types of speech acts employed in the @voilajogja culinary Instagram account and (2) how these acts manifest marketing strategies in food discourse. The study applies Searle's (1979) speech act theory and Kotler and Keller's (2021) marketing management framework within a mixed-method design. The analysis …

Development Of Big-Ideas Guided Thematic Unit Module For High School English As A Foreign Language Instruction In China, Wang Han Mar 2026

Development Of Big-Ideas Guided Thematic Unit Module For High School English As A Foreign Language Instruction In China, Wang Han

Student Works (2020-2029)

The 2017 National English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools in China position “Big Ideas” as a central organizing principle for thematic unit design. The absence of Big-Ideas oriented instruction is often linked to fragmented learning, rote memorization, weak knowledge transfer, and limited higher-order thinking, which collectively hinder the attainment of national core competency goals. Existing studies and teacher survey data suggest that students lacking exposure to Big-Idea pedagogy underperform in cross-text reasoning, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. Teachers also face multiple challenges: a superficial understanding of Big Ideas, a lack of structured instructional tools, and constraints posed by exam-driven …

Translating The Book Of Mormon Into Spanish: A Case Study Of The Translation Of Sacred Texts, Gabriel González Núñez Mar 2026

Translating The Book Of Mormon Into Spanish: A Case Study Of The Translation Of Sacred Texts, Gabriel González Núñez

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

The translation of sacred texts is one of the oldest forms of translation, one which has helped develop our understanding of what translation is. Even so, the question arises as to whether there is anything particularly distinctive about translating sacrality. On the one hand, it can be argued that translating sacred texts is just like translating any other historical or cultural texts (Naudé, 2010). On the other hand, it can be argued that the translation of sacred texts deserves its own category because, for some members of the population, these texts play a special role (Long, 2013). This study seeks …

Identity Restoration Theory: Reclaiming Cultural Identity As A Pathway To Reintegration, Sigifredo Castell Britton Mar 2026

Identity Restoration Theory: Reclaiming Cultural Identity As A Pathway To Reintegration, Sigifredo Castell Britton

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

This article introduces Identity Restoration Theory (IRT), a new theoretical framework that explains what formerly incarcerated individuals need to reconnect with disrupted cultural identities as a pathway to reintegration. Grounded in qualitative fieldwork with Raizal ex-offenders and community leaders on San Andrés Island, Colombia, IRT is designed to conceptualize reintegration, not as institutional resettlement, but as a culturally rooted process of re-embedding identity within community and place. The framework delineates five interdependent constructs—cultural memory, place reconnection, narrative repair, communal belonging, and agency activation—that emerged inductively from participant narratives. Anchored in the postcolonial context of an Afro-Caribbean island society, IRT provides …

Who Gets To Be A Teacher? A Postqualitative Inquiry Into Teacher Attrition, Chloe Fann Mar 2026

Who Gets To Be A Teacher? A Postqualitative Inquiry Into Teacher Attrition, Chloe Fann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This postqualitative dissertation challenges four decades of assumptions about who counts as a teacher and what it means to leave teaching. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari's (1987) concept of order-words (i.e., the restrictions and boundaries tied to words through presuppositions), I investigate how the teacher attrition literature has created and maintained teacher as an order-word that establishes specific boundaries around what it means to be a teacher. Through nearly 40 years of repetition across the Teacher Follow-up Survey, grey literature from federal agencies and think tanks, and empirical research, these boundaries have become naturalized, making them feel inevitable rather than …

Spanish Phonetic Production In Heritage Speakers Vs. L2 Learners: The Effects Of Pedagogical Intervention, Ty Donley Mar 2026

Spanish Phonetic Production In Heritage Speakers Vs. L2 Learners: The Effects Of Pedagogical Intervention, Ty Donley

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines both phonetic realizations of heritage speakers and L2 students of Spanish as well as the effectiveness of a short-term phonetic-based pedagogical intervention for L2 students of Spanish. 24 university students participated in recorded Spanish speech tasks that were analyzed acoustically using PRAAT. The analysis focused on vowel spacing, aspiration (VOT), spirantization (RID), rhotic accuracy, and the oral realization of the grapheme “v”. Heritage speakers generally produced more native-like phonetic patterns than L2 learners, although both groups exhibited evidence of English phonological influence. L2 learners completed both pre- and post-instruction speech tasks following a 20 to 25-minute phonetic …

Challenging The Deliberative Consensus: Participatory Strategies, Transparency And Citizen Trust Across Municipal Contexts, Fadel Al-Marsoumi Mar 2026

Challenging The Deliberative Consensus: Participatory Strategies, Transparency And Citizen Trust Across Municipal Contexts, Fadel Al-Marsoumi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationships between participatory governance strategies and multidimensional citizen trust in municipal contexts. Although local governments have implemented deliberative forums, digital platforms and hybrid participation approaches to restore declining public confidence, inconsistencies between theoretical predictions and empirical outcomes have raised questions about participatory governance effectiveness. Motivated by this gap between deliberative democracy theory's optimistic predictions and limited empirical support, the study investigates the psychological, political and contextual mechanisms that shape trust formation through civic engagement. Drawing on an integrated framework combining organizational trust theory and deliberative democracy frameworks, the research conceptualizes trust as a multidimensional construct involving …

Petri Net Conformance Checking For Knowledge Gap Detection From Enterprise Workflow Event Logs, Kenneth Davis

Defensive Publications Series

Field Computer-implemented systems for detecting employee knowledge deficits by analyzing conformance deviations between employee process execution patterns and expert-derived reference process models, using process mining algorithms on structured workflow event logs. Background Enterprise workflow systems generate detailed event logs recording every step an employee takes in a business process. When an employee repeatedly deviates from the expected process (skipping steps, adding unnecessary steps, executing steps out of order), this pattern can indicate a knowledge deficit in the underlying domain. The approach described here applies industrial process mining techniques to detect these deviations and attribute them to specific knowledge domains. Technical …
