Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Two studies addressed how young adult college students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n = 44) compare to their nonaffected peers (n = 42) on tests of auditory and visual–spatial working memory (WM), are vulnerable to auditory and visual distractions, and are affected by a simple intervention. Students with ADHD demonstrated worse auditory WM than did controls. A near significant trend indicated that auditory distractions interfered with the visual WM of both groups and that, whereas controls were also vulnerable to visual distractions, visual distractions improved visualWM in the ADHD group. The intervention was ineffective. Limited correlations emerged between …

The History Of Inequality In Education, Amity L. Noltemeyer, Julie Mujic, Caven S. Mcloughlin

History Faculty Publications

The purpose of this chapter is to consider a sampling of the critical events that demonstrate this history of inequity, with the understanding that they have contributed to the current status of American schools. To this end, we will explore relevant events related to the education of individuals of different racial, gender, language, and disability backgrounds. We do not intend to provide an exhaustive overview of the history of American education, nor will we provide a detailed account of the history of equity in the broader society outside of the educational sector. Rather, we will provide a cursory glimpse at …

Truly Normative Matters: An Essay On The Value Of Truth, Charles Kamper Floyd Iii Jan 2012

Truly Normative Matters: An Essay On The Value Of Truth, Charles Kamper Floyd Iii

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

Is truth valuable? In addressing this question, one must parse it into questions that are more manageable. Is the property of truth only instrumentally valuable, or is it both instrumentally valuable and noninstrumentally valuable? Is the normativity of the concept of truth an intrinsic or extrinsic property of the concept? In addressing the first of these questions, I show that certain arguments are flawed, arguments that purport to show that truth is not valuable in any kind of way. After establishing that it is reasonable to think that the property of truth is valuable, I show how inflationists and deflationists …

Compression Effects In English, Jonah Katz Jan 2012

Compression Effects In English, Jonah Katz

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper reports the results of an English experiment on vowel-shortening in different contexts. The data concern compression effects, whereby, in syllables with a greater number of segments, each one of the segments is shorter than in syllables with fewer segments. The experiment demonstrates that the amount of vowel compression found in English monosyllabic words depends in part on which consonants occur adjacent to the vowel in that word, how many consonants occur, and in which position they occur. Consonant clusters drive more vowel shortening than singletons when they involve liquids, but not when they involve only obstruents. Clusters involving …

Immigration And Ethnic Diversity In Nevada, Thomas Wright, John P. Tuman, Maryam T. Stevenson Jan 2012

Immigration And Ethnic Diversity In Nevada, Thomas Wright, John P. Tuman, Maryam T. Stevenson

Social Health of Nevada Reports

In a few decades, non-Hispanic whites will constitute a bare majority in the United States. If current demographic trends continue, the Hispanic population will double or even triple in size by 2050, the Asian population will double, and the African-American population will grow at a faster pace than non-Hispanic whites, which are actually expected to begin declining by 2025. These developments promise to bring profound changes in the country’s ethnic and racial landscape.

“After The Apple”: Female Sexuality In The Writings Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Susan Walter Jan 2012

“After The Apple”: Female Sexuality In The Writings Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Susan Walter

Decimonónica

The Biblical story of creation in which Adam and Eve are deceived by the serpent is recognized widely as one of the foundational stories of Western culture. The story’s importance is asserted by many scholars, including Elaine Pagels in her groundbreaking study Adam, Eve and the Serpent: “[T]he biblical creation story, like the creation stories of other cultures, communicates social and religious values and presents them as if they were universally valid” (xx). In this same study Pagels suggests that Christians have interpreted the story of “Genesis” in various ways over the centuries, finding in it important teachings about …

Show And Tell: Eva Canel At The 1893 Columbia World Exhibition In Chicago, Catharina Vallejo

Decimonónica

Agar Eva Infanzón Canel (1857-1932), a Spanish woman who took the penname of Eva Canel for her professional literary activities, married actor and author Eloy Perillán Buxó at the precocious age of 14 and, after being exiled from Spain for his subversive writing, traveled the theater circuit with him through the Americas. Wherever she stayed for some prolonged period she established cultural magazines, the texts of which she often wrote entirely herself. After her husband’s death in 1889, she earned her living by giving conferences wherever she traveled, and by writing, being one of the first Hispanic women professional journalists. …

Reinterpreting Hysteria Under Patriarchy In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S “La Novia Fiel” And “Error De Diagnóstico”, Jennifer Smith Jan 2012

Reinterpreting Hysteria Under Patriarchy In Emilia Pardo Bazán’S “La Novia Fiel” And “Error De Diagnóstico”, Jennifer Smith

Decimonónica

In the nineteenth century there was an explosion of medical discourses on the illness of hysteria, particularly in relation to women. While there were many theories on the origin and nature of the disease that were circulating throughout Spain in the nineteenth century, the prevailing theory was that the cause of hysteria was the female sexual reproductive organs and that only women suffered from the disease (Jagoe, “Sexo” 341- 43). In fact, some Spanish doctors, such as Baltasar de Viguera, considered by many to be Spain’s first gynecologist, continued to subscribe to ancient Greek conceptions of the disease as an …

Translating Rosalía De Castro’S Saudade Into English, James R. Krause Jan 2012

Translating Rosalía De Castro’S Saudade Into English, James R. Krause

Decimonónica

Critics of Rosalía de Castro frequently recognize her participation in the Galician revival of culture and language, known as the Rexurdimento, in the latter half of the Nineteenth Century. Her final work, En las orillas del Sar (1884), has garnered particular praise for the richness of its aesthetic, linguistic, and socio-cultural aspects. Castro, however, is not widely known to readers of English, even though there are three anthologies of her poetry in translation. In 1937, S. Griswold Morley published selections in the bilingual edition, Beside the River Sar. Critics reviewed it favorably, but some of the translations read …

The Coordination Conundrum, Catherine A. Hardee Jan 2012

The Coordination Conundrum, Catherine A. Hardee

Faculty Scholarship

Justice Souter's oft-repeated quote aptly summarizes the function of strict standards of review in constitutional jurisprudence to protect unpopular speech from restrictions based on content-laden value judgments. While strict standards have their advantages, commentators have found fault with their rigidity and have questioned whether any decision-making process can, or should, be free of pragmatic considerations. This doctrinal discussion has been reinvigorated by two recent United States Supreme Court opinions. At the root of both cases was the Court's reliance on the distinction between coordinated and independent speech. This Article examines the validity of this divide and challenges the foundation upon …

The Family Experience Of Participating In An Icu Support Group: A Pilot Study, Rebecca Marie Scharpe Jan 2012

The Family Experience Of Participating In An Icu Support Group: A Pilot Study, Rebecca Marie Scharpe

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of family members participating in an intensive care unit support group. The family experience of an adult family member's critical illness is filled with emotional distress, suffering, and difficulty coping. Few family nursing interventions to care for family members of ICU patients have been researched. Research is inconsistent regarding the value of a support group in the ICU setting of a hospital. A qualitative design, using hermeneutic phenomenology was chosen. Five interviews were conducted with seven family members. The experience of participating in an ICU support groups was analyzed within …

Community, Enforcement And Justification: The International Law Of Intervention In World-Societal Perspective, Stefan Kroll Jan 2012

Community, Enforcement And Justification: The International Law Of Intervention In World-Societal Perspective, Stefan Kroll

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The article discusses the normative integration of the world society by the case of international legal discourses on intervention in the late 19th and early 20th century. Within the framework of a non-interventionist international legal structure, international rights and obligations to intervene form an unlikely case which helps to reveal unexpected degrees of normative integration on the international level. The article combines sociological world society research with insights from international relations theory and comparative constitutionalism. The article discusses three interconnected steps of integration: the emergence of semantics of international community, its legal enforcement and justification. The analysis shows a legalization …

Text Work As Identity Work For Legal Writers: How Writing Texts Contribute To The Construction Of A Professional Identity, Shelley M. Kierstead, Erika Abner Jan 2012

Text Work As Identity Work For Legal Writers: How Writing Texts Contribute To The Construction Of A Professional Identity, Shelley M. Kierstead, Erika Abner

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The authors conduct an analysis of a number of first year and practitioner legal writing texts in order to examine whether and how these texts focus on the development of a legal identity: in particular, through the creation of a personal, professional, or discoursal voice. The question of creation of a legal identity is significant, in part, because of the increased focus on teaching and learning professionalism and professional behaviors, both within law schools and in practice. The authors conclude that there is a limited focus within the texts on the identity work inherent in learning to write with authority …

Stability Through Chaos : The Use Of Psychiatry As A Tool Of Social Control Of Colonial Malaya, 1880-1917, Joann Losavio

Ideas have travelled a convoluted route throughout history, most paths remaining obscured until historical research untangles them. In Malaysia, the colonizing political machinations of the British from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century are often credited as a single force facilitated a wholesale movement of Eurocentric ideology into the region. It is taken as if Colonialism was a monolithic weapon which obliterated native ideology in a single swipe. Such a generalization has omitted the vital nuances and masked the actual path of history. This historical study revealed that one way in which European though merged into modern Malaysian ideology was an …

Subgrouping Of Nisoic (Yi) Languages: A Study From The Perspectives Of Shared Innovation And Phylogenetic Estimation, Ziwo Qiu-Fuyuan Lama Jan 2012

Subgrouping Of Nisoic (Yi) Languages: A Study From The Perspectives Of Shared Innovation And Phylogenetic Estimation, Ziwo Qiu-Fuyuan Lama

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

In southwest China and neighboring countries, including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar, there live over 100 ethnic groups who speak languages known as Nuosu, Naxi, Hani, Lisu, Lahu, etc. These languages belong to the Nisoic Branch or the Loloish Branch of Tibeto-Burman (TB) subfamily of Sino-Tibetan. Though the Nisoic affiliation to TB is unquestionable, its internal subgrouping has not been settled. This dissertation aims to study the internal relationship of 34 Nisoic and three Burmic languages from two perspectives shared innovation and phylogenetic estimation. Shared innovation has been regarded as the most reliable criterion in determining subgroups of language descent …

Repair Negotiation By English L2 Learners, Yujeong Choi Jan 2012

Repair Negotiation By English L2 Learners, Yujeong Choi

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

It is widely accepted that L2 learners often face communication problems due to lack of competency in the target language and familiarity with its culture of origin. One way to resolve miscommunication problems is to seek clarification of the utterance; this process is called repair negotiation (Nakahama et al. 2001). Repair negotiation has been studied as a subset of Long's (1996) Interaction Hypothesis in second language acquisition (SLA). Existing research has solely focused on repair negotiation which is initiated by the native speaker or teacher rather than the L2 learner, thus resulting in other-initiated repair (OIR). However, it has also …

Using Critical Race Theory To Analyze How Disney Constructs Diversity: A Construct For The Baccalaureate Human Behavior In The Social Environment Curriculum, Amy Cappiccie, Janice Chadha, Muh Bi Lin, Frank Snyder

Faculty Publications - College of Social Work

Utilizing the basic tenets of critical race theory, the authors draw upon the expertise of multicultural scholars to raise consciousness and facilitate BSW classroom dialogue about microagressions perpetrated in Disney animations. Microaggressions pervade our media partly because they typically operate outside the thresh-old of the dominant culture’s conscious awareness. Our main consciousness-raising method is to expose social work students to microagressions depicted in Disney animations and then use the classroom as a counterspace to process the experience. We note that utilizing critical race theory to become conscious of microaggressions within Disney animations is the first step toward eradicating them.

Adapted Stories: Creating Accessible Stories For Children With Complex Language Problems, Janet L. Dodd

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Many children with autism spectrum and other language impairing disorders present with complicated language problems (CLP; Franke & Durbin, 2011). These children exhibit delays across multiple domains of language and often benefit from narrative- and story-based interventions. However, many children’s stories—the vehicle often employed for these types of interventions—are often too complex for them. The purpose of this article is to introduce a strategy for making stories accessible, linguistically and cognitively, for children with CLP.

Alternative Interventions Used To Help Mexican-American Students Improve Academic Achievement In Grades 9 - 12, Alberta M. Reyes

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative research study employing a cross-case analysis on previous case studies is to better understand the engagement of Latino students in a small number of cultural sensitivity programs and the teaching practices that are factors in the development of their academic achievement. In the traditional infrastructure of public schools, assimilation is built on fundamental values aligned with the U.S. political establishment rather than on the value of adaptation to the demands and conflicts of other cultures. Thus, less-empowered groups are at a disadvantage resulting in subgroups abandoning their ideas and reducing their contributions to human capital. …

Turning Away From Your Slavic Brother: The Effects Of Identity On Relations Between Russia And Belarus, Matt Matejka Jan 2012

Turning Away From Your Slavic Brother: The Effects Of Identity On Relations Between Russia And Belarus, Matt Matejka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

On September 24, 2011, it was announced that Putin would run for president once again in 2012. The reaction in the West was that ―the more things change, the more they stay the same.‖ The Western conception of the post-Cold War Russia is often one of remarkable consistency since the turn of the century. This Western narrative focuses on an autocratic Putin reigning over his resurgent and confrontational Russia. Does this narrative tell the story of Russia today, or does it instead obscure it? To answer this I have elected to analyze Russian identity and how it relates to Russia‘s …
