Turning Away From Your Slavic Brother: The Effects Of Identity On Relations Between Russia And Belarus, Matt Matejka Jan 2012

Turning Away From Your Slavic Brother: The Effects Of Identity On Relations Between Russia And Belarus, Matt Matejka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

On September 24, 2011, it was announced that Putin would run for president once again in 2012. The reaction in the West was that ―the more things change, the more they stay the same.‖ The Western conception of the post-Cold War Russia is often one of remarkable consistency since the turn of the century. This Western narrative focuses on an autocratic Putin reigning over his resurgent and confrontational Russia. Does this narrative tell the story of Russia today, or does it instead obscure it? To answer this I have elected to analyze Russian identity and how it relates to Russia‘s …

Semantic Priming Of Familiar Songs, Sarah K. Johnson, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 2012

Semantic Priming Of Familiar Songs, Sarah K. Johnson, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

We explored the functional organization of semantic memory for music by comparing priming across familiar songs both within modalities (Experiment 1, tune to tune; Experiment 3, category label to lyrics) and across modalities (Experiment 2, category label to tune; Experiment 4, tune to lyrics). Participants judged whether or not the target tune or lyrics were real (akin to lexical decision tasks). We found significant priming, analogous to linguistic associative-priming effects, in reaction times for related primes as compared to unrelated primes, but primarily for within-modality comparisons. Reaction times to tunes (e.g., "Silent Night") were faster following related tunes ("Deck the …

Reliable Science: Overcoming Public Doubts In The Climate Change Debate, Michelle S. Simon Jan 2012

Reliable Science: Overcoming Public Doubts In The Climate Change Debate, Michelle S. Simon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article will consider the case for instituting a domestic agency that would evaluate the findings from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessments to improve the credibility and legitimacy of those claims and conclusions for multiple purposes. The proposed agency would consider the robustness of an assessment's conclusions by construing the evidence through the lens of Daubert rather than Frye. Part I will outline the public debate about climate science-what the debate is about and why it exists. Part II will examine the current role of the IPCC-what it is and why it has not been successful in legitimating …

An Assessment Of Nigeria Urban Youth Music, Nkechi M Christopher Jan 2012

An Assessment Of Nigeria Urban Youth Music, Nkechi M Christopher

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Music embodies culture, expressing relevant features of a people’s life. Music is an integral aspect of African culture, occupying a special place in the celebration of birth and death and other events in-between. Indeed it is difficult to imagine life without music in traditional Nigerian society where all strata and age groups have their own music; a richness of life that urban communities failed to totally replicate, being that they are composites of ethno-linguistic fragments. Thus, the evolving youth popular music culture is significant in many respects, especially as it cuts across ethnic divides and provides entertainment for a group …

Women, Men And Education In Azerbaijan, Kifayat Aghayeva Jan 2012

Women, Men And Education In Azerbaijan, Kifayat Aghayeva

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

There is a very popular saying in my country, “science is for a man, a woman’s place is at home.” Many talented women have struggled for a doctoral degree and most of them could not complete it because of one reason, a “violence rule of the main gatekeepers” of academia who are inclined to preserve the ideals to authorize their positions. As my research and teaching focus is gender, I always raise gender inequality problems in my scientific works. I have some articles dealing with marginalization of women within academia or slow inclusion of women into the National Academia of …

The Phantom Author Of An Unfathomable Land: Ali And Nino, Günil Özlem Ayaydin Cebe Jan 2012

The Phantom Author Of An Unfathomable Land: Ali And Nino, Günil Özlem Ayaydin Cebe

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The novel Ali and Nino is considered one of the pioneering texts of modern Azerbaijan literature. The undiminished interest in the novel with its nearly 100 editions or reprints, and translations into 33 languages, indicates its importance as a universal as well as a national narrative. Despite that, there remains the mystery about the identity of its author who published the book under the pseudonym Kurban Said. According to some researchers, the author is Lev Nussimbaum who worked in Berlin as a journalist and an “expert on the Orient” under the name Essad Bey for a decade between the two …

Power And Truth In Atwood’S The Blind Assassin, Roshanak Fazli, Ehsan Hafezikermani Jan 2012

Power And Truth In Atwood’S The Blind Assassin, Roshanak Fazli, Ehsan Hafezikermani

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The present paper explicates the power relations in the social and private networks of the characters’ lives in Margaret Atwood’s The Blind Assassin. Several groups of relationships are observed to demonstrate noticed and neglected power forces among men and women in the story. Thus the battleground is depicted and the domination of men over women will be rejected. Using Foucault’s ideas about power and truth, I try to display the conflict of all against all in the novel and likewise in the civilized society we live in.

Articulation Of Medium Of Instruction Politics In The Malaysian Chinese Press, L.L. Ng Jan 2012

Articulation Of Medium Of Instruction Politics In The Malaysian Chinese Press, L.L. Ng

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In postcolonial multilingual societies, matters of education are deeply rooted in the discourse of ethnicity. In Malaysia, the interface between ethnicity and education is reflected in recent debates on the choice of medium of instruction (MOI). In 2002, the Malaysian government introduced English as MOI by replacing Malay, the national language, for teaching mathematics and science, at the school level. However, in 2009, the policy was reversed to Malay. This policy initiative has been actively contested in the Malaysian media. Through an analysis of news reports on the controversy published by the Malaysian Chinese newspaper, Nanyang Siang Pao, this paper …

Neuroimaging During Trance State: A Contribution To The Study Of Dissociation., Julio Fernando Peres, Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Leonardo Caixeta, Frederico Leao, Andrew Newberg

Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers

Despite increasing interest in pathological and non-pathological dissociation, few researchers have focused on the spiritual experiences involving dissociative states such as mediumship, in which an individual (the medium) claims to be in communication with, or under the control of, the mind of a deceased person. Our preliminary study investigated psychography - in which allegedly "the spirit writes through the medium's hand" - for potential associations with specific alterations in cerebral activity. We examined ten healthy psychographers - five less expert mediums and five with substantial experience, ranging from 15 to 47 years of automatic writing and 2 to 18 psychographies …

Teaching Culture In The 21st Century Language Classroom, Oxana Dema, Aleidine Kramer Moeller

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The paper presents an overview of the research on teaching culture and describes effective pedagogical practices that can be integrated into the second language curriculum. Particularly, this overview tries to advance an approach for teaching culture and language through the theoretical construct of the 3Ps (Products, Practices, Perspectives), combined with an inquiry-based teaching approach utilizing instructional technology. This approach promotes student motivation and engagement that can help overcome past issues of stereotyping and lack of intercultural awareness. The authors summarize the research articles illustrating how teachers successfully integrate digital media together with inquiry learning into instruction to create a rich …

Accessing High-Quality Instructional Strategies, Edmund T. Hamann, Jenelle Reeves Jan 2012

Accessing High-Quality Instructional Strategies, Edmund T. Hamann, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Instructional strategies figure centrally in what happens in classrooms, are critical to educational outcomes, and central to the narrowing of achievement gaps. However, broad improvement of schools, including the narrowing of these gaps, will depend on changes in instructional strategy and improved student access to educators using these strategies. Much of the research on instructional strategies identifies universal aspects of effective instruction that pertain across subject matter, grade level and student characteristics. Other important findings from instructional strategy research are not as broadly applicable. These second kind of findings, are more specific to particular grade levels, topics of instruction, students’ …

Community Health Center Strategies Used To Eradicate Barriers To Leadership By Women, Latecia Monicque Abraham

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Despite the fact that women are earning an increasing proportion of advanced degrees, they are still significantly underrepresented in executive leadership positions in health care. However, women have been notably successful becoming leaders of Community Health Centers (CHCs). This study investigated what strategies have been successful in helping women shatter the glass ceiling in CHCs. A validated e-mail survey was adapted and administered to a nationwide sample of CHC Executive Directors, with 85 responses analyzed using a variety of non-parametric statistical measures. In addition, four male and four female Directors were interviewed in depth via telephone. The survey data showed …

Apprenticeship In Academic Literacy: Three K-12 Literacy Strategies To Support Higher Education Students, Susan Constable, Jenifer J. Schneider, Carrie B. Scheckelhoff

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to outline ways in which early and adolescent literacy strategies can guide the instruction of academic literacy practices for undergraduate and graduate-level students. First, we used guided reading elements to assist higher-education students’ exploration of research texts. Second, we used “writing-aloud” practices and mentor texts to guide the synthesis of research and the construction of literature reviews. Finally, we implemented Writing Workshops to support apprenticeship in inquiryoriented instructional design, data collection, and research writing. Using formative and design experiments as an approach to pedagogical improvement, we modelled and adapted K-12 literacy strategies for our …

The Lady Showroom: Optical Representations In The Works Of Joanna Baillie And Louisa Stuart Costello, Katherine Richards Jan 2012

The Lady Showroom: Optical Representations In The Works Of Joanna Baillie And Louisa Stuart Costello, Katherine Richards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much women's writing in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries attempts to depict other women visually through textual description, use of optical devices, and discussion of bodies and appearances. This thesis argues that they were trying to see and show other women as a way of understanding themselves and each other by examining intersections between visual culture and text through mirrors, miniatures, and portraits. This thesis demonstrates how these works reflect larger shifts in the optical unconscious of the eighteenth century. I focus on works by Joanna Baillie and Louisa Stuart Costello, who theorize the viewing process in their …

Using The Eportfolio To Complement Standardized Testing In A Healthcare Professional Program: Better Education Or More Busy Work?, Clarence Chan

Publications and Research

This article evaluates the full-scale integration of the ePortfolio into a healthcare professional program in an open admissions community college in the United States. The Physical Therapist Assistant program in question struggles to balance the dynamic tension between preparing students for a summative multiple-choice licensing examination and the continuous development of professional core values such as altruism and integrity—qualities that cannot be measured by any standardized test. To address this conflict, the program has piloted the ePortfolio as a pedagogical tool that enables students to reflect on their development of professionalism and to make connections between academics, clinical practice, and …

Evaluating Human-Robot Implicit Communication Through Human-Human Implicit Communication, Andrew Xenos Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research is examining ways to make human-robot (HR) communication more natural. Incorporating natural communication techniques is expected to make HR communication seamless and more natural for humans. Humans naturally incorporate implicit levels of communication, and including implicit communication in HR communication should provide tremendous benefit. The aim for this work was to evaluate a model for humanrobot implicit communication. Specifically, the primary goal for this research was to determine whether humans can assign meanings to implicit cues received from autonomous robots as they do for identical implicit cues received from humans. An experiment was designed to allow …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Code-Switching In The Arabic-Romance Kharjas, Lofti Sayahi, Juan Antonio Thomas Jan 2012

A Quantitative Analysis Of Code-Switching In The Arabic-Romance Kharjas, Lofti Sayahi, Juan Antonio Thomas

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This paper studies code-switching between Andalusian Arabic and Romance in the kharjas, the closing verses of the muwashshahaat poems. These poems, dating from the 11th to the 14th centuries, were composed in Classical Arabic, while the kharjas were written in two languages of Al-Andalus: Andalusian Arabic and Romance. The purpose is to investigate to what degree the structural aspect of code-switching in the kharjas conforms to descriptions in the current literature on code-switching in bilingual communities and what that tells us about the degree of bilingualism in Al-Andalus. The 43 kharjas (Corriente, 2008) present a total of 104 codeswitches: 82 …
