The Effects Of Type-Face On Sarcasm Comprehension, Joseph Winfield Juneau Haslam Jan 2012

The Effects Of Type-Face On Sarcasm Comprehension, Joseph Winfield Juneau Haslam

Theses & ETDs

This study investigates the effects of a purposed left leaning italicized type-face on sarcasm comprehension. In the experiment, participants read conditionally treated hypothetical conversational exchanges, either literal or sarcastic in nature, and evaluated speaker intent. Type-face did show to have some significant effect on participant perception in particular instances, however these findings are preliminary. These results support that there may be an intuitive aspect to the type-face, possibly influencing the reader's inner narration of text, akin to conversational cues. Further research into this field of study may result in additional ways to enhance intent clarity in computer mediated communication.

A Rehabilitation Of Male Subjectivity In The Fiction Of Yu Hua, Jacob Long Jan 2012

A Rehabilitation Of Male Subjectivity In The Fiction Of Yu Hua, Jacob Long

Theses & ETDs

This thesis concerns male subjectivity as it is treated in the fiction of Yu Hua. In the first instance, its purpose is to reevaluate how male subjectivity is to be understood in Yu Hua's early avant-garde short stories in light of his later realist novels. It is divided into an introduction, including connotations and implications of (male)subjectivity in modern China, as well as a brief summary of intellectual and literary trends of the 1980s in China, and then two chapters of analysis, and a conclusion. The first chapter is an analysis of Yu Hua's short story "Blood and Plum Blossoms". …

Stigma Against People With Depression, It's Effect On Test Performance, And Role Models' Influence On This Effect, Katya Ariano

Theses & ETDs

Researchers have described the phenomenon of stereotype threat as the feeling that one will be judged according to a stereotype or do something to confirm that stereotype. The current study looks at how role models may be able to negate stereotype threat for people with depression in test-taking situations. There was a final sample of 41 participants, each of whom was assigned to one of four conditions (Role Model/Stereotype Threat, No Role Model/Stereotype Threat, Role Model/No Stereotype Threat, or No Role Model/No Stereotype Threat). The participants took a survey (according to which condition they were randomly assigned) containing three passages …

Bedouin Modernization Policies In Jordan And Israel, Samantha Sementilli Jan 2012

Bedouin Modernization Policies In Jordan And Israel, Samantha Sementilli

Theses & ETDs

Bedouins throughout the Middle East are facing numerous issues, including uncertain citizenship, violence, lack of livelihood, and difficulty functioning inside the states. Socioeconomic change and the development of modern states have challenged core elements of Bedouin identity to the point that outsiders question the distinction between Bedouins and related populations. This study investigates the effects of modernization on Bedouins in Jordan and Israel. After reviewing modernization from the Ottoman Empire through modern nation states, the study examines two cases, Israel and Jordan, to explore the different avenues of modernization present in Bedouin lives. The case studies focus on legal status, …

The Divine Feminine A Feminist Study Of Goddess Appropriation Within The Jewish Renewal Movement And Western Interpretations Of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, Zoe Rayor Jan 2012

The Divine Feminine A Feminist Study Of Goddess Appropriation Within The Jewish Renewal Movement And Western Interpretations Of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, Zoe Rayor

Theses & ETDs

Feminist spirituality is a contemporary religious movement created in order to abolish the harmful remnants of explicit and subtle patriarchal influence within various religious traditions. To counteract the ubiquitous androcentricity found within many religions, along with the pervasive masculine notions of God, practitioners of feminist spirituality integrate a feminine divine figure, or goddess, into their religious retinue. This thesis examines the religious phenomenon of feminine divine appropriation through two case studies. The first chapter explores the contemporary Jewish Renewal movement and its appropriation of the Kabbalistic divine feminine figure, Shekhinah. The second chapter analyzes Western feminists' and scholar-practitioners' use of …

The Effect Of Diverted Disclosure On Cognitive Processing With Applications To Sexual Assault, Katherine Howard Oglesby Jan 2012

The Effect Of Diverted Disclosure On Cognitive Processing With Applications To Sexual Assault, Katherine Howard Oglesby

Theses & ETDs

Diverted disclosure, a common response to sexual assault disclosure, involves initially listening to the survivor confide that the assault occurred, but soon after distracting or discouraging the survivor from discussing the experience. The present study investigated the impact of diverted disclosure on cognitive processing about a distressing experience. It was predicted that disclosure would enhance cognitive processing, but that a diverting response from the listener would mitigate this effect. To induce negative affect, undergraduate students (n=24) initially viewed an art show dealing with personal experiences of sexual assault. Disclosure conditions were determined by a 2 X 2 design: participants either …

A Historical And Algorithmic Study Of Schoenberg's Approach To Counterpoint, Walter Maisel Jan 2012

A Historical And Algorithmic Study Of Schoenberg's Approach To Counterpoint, Walter Maisel

Theses & ETDs

Arnold Schoenberg's Preliminary Exercises in Counterpoint, a method for learning to compose counterpoint in a modern tonal style, was published in 1963. In it, Schoenberg criticizes the use of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's music as a model for counterpoint. Despite this, his method uses the cantus firmus and rhythmic species techniques associated with Johannes Fux's Gradus ad Parnassum, a central text in contrapuntal pedagogy that is closely associated with Palestrina's music. Schoenberg also completes some exercises demonstrating the rules he has given. A computer program that is intended to encapsulate all of Schoenberg's rules for two voice, first species counterpoint …

Dynamicity Of Motivational Change In Learning Japanese As A Foreign Language, Ayaka Komori

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Enhancing students’ motivations could lead to the improvement of students’ academic achievement in second language acquisition. Many scholars have discussed changes and outcomes of motivation over the language learning process to examine the relationship between attitudes, motivation, and language learning outcome. The present study examines how some high school student learners of Japanese in an American high school have changed or maintained their motivational levels toward learning Japanese, as well as how their motivation in their second language learning can be influenced by classroom activities. The results of the questionnaire data, the classroom observation data, and the interview data indicate …

Engaging And Empowering Preservice Teachers Through Ignatian And Critical Pedagogy: Examples From The Classroom, Sandra L. Foster Jan 2012

Engaging And Empowering Preservice Teachers Through Ignatian And Critical Pedagogy: Examples From The Classroom, Sandra L. Foster

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Our nation continues to have a diverse population as reflected by our K-12 student population in America's schools. However, approximately 83.5% of our nation's teachers are white and mirror the demographics found in most teacher preparation programs. Because most teachers will come into contact with children who are culturally and racially different from them, preservice teachers will need to learn new ways of thinking about cultural differences and will need to be trained to work with students from various racial and cultural backgrounds. Ignatian Pedagogy and Critical Pedagogy are effective strategies to challenge students‟ preconceived notions about people who are …

Association Between Acculturation And Breastfeeding Among Hispanic Women: Data From The Pregnancy Risk Assessment And Monitoring System, Indu B. Ahluwalia, Denise D’Angelo, Brian Morrow, Jill A. Mcdonald

United States Public Health Resources

Background: Breastfeeding rates are typically higher among Hispanic women; however, they vary by acculturation status in that those more acculturated are less likely to breastfeed than those who are less acculturated. This study examined the association between acculturation and breastfeeding behaviors using population-based data.

Methods: Data (N = 8942) from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) were used for analysis. Acculturation status was determined using self-reported Hispanic ethnicity and the language in which the women responded to the PRAMS survey, either English or Spanish. Hispanic women who responded to the survey in Spanish were categorized as less acculturated than …

Independent Benefits Of Meeting The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines To Insulin Resistance In Obese Latino Children, Nazrat Mirza, Matilde Palmer, Johanna O'Connell, Loretta Dipietro

Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Publications

We examined the independent association between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and insulin resistance (IR) among obese Latino children ( = 1 1 3; 7–15 years) who were enrolled in a community-based obesity intervention. Baseline information on physical activity was gathered by self-report. Clinical assessments of body composition, resting energy expenditure (REE), as well as glucose and insulin responses to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were performed after an overnight fast. Insulin resistance was defined as a 2 h insulin concentration >57 μU·mL−1. We observed that those obese children who met the 2008 Guidelines for MVPA (≥60 min/day) …

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to provide nursing students in the final semester of their associate degree nursing program and community health worker students with a culturally focused, interactive, collaborative, interprofessional learning experience. Health care reform addresses health disparities in an increasingly diverse population with complex chronic health needs. The needs of this diverse population require health professionals to function as members of interprofessional teams providing culturally competent care. Published professional literature supports interprofessional education for students entering the health care field to prepare them to practice as members of interprofessional teams. Government studies and professional accrediting bodies overseeing …

Integrating Archaeology Into A Standards-Based, Fifth Grade Classroom, Lindsey Lee Elizabeth Mieras Jan 2012

Integrating Archaeology Into A Standards-Based, Fifth Grade Classroom, Lindsey Lee Elizabeth Mieras

Theses and Graduate Projects

Archaeology enhances student learning through use of cooperative skills, inquiry, anthropologic thought, hands-on learning, and community connections. However, a standards aligned curriculum to educate students in the field of archaeology is currently inadequate. Due to variation in teacher's interest, knowledge base, and ability to merge archaeology into several disciplines, a guide to be used as engagement activities, individual lessons, or filler activities is more helpful than integrating it in a social studies or science unit. In the process of this project, a curriculum guide was created and intended to reach all types of teachers, disciplines, and standards in the process …

The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act And Medicaid Expansion: Leadership Strategies For Effective Change Management In Managed Care Organizations, Emily Aurand

Theses and Graduate Projects

As a result of tlie 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), eligibility requirements for the Medicaid program were revised resulting in a greater number of people eligible to enroll in tlie government healthcare program. These circumstances require numerous organizational changes for Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) that administer the Medicaid program in order to accommodate the healthcare needs of the growing Medicaid population and comply with applicable regulatory requirements. This case study sought to identify effective leadership strategies employed by Minnesota Medicaid MCO change leaders guiding organizational change processes and seeking quality change outcomes, resulting from the externally …

The Institution Matching Canon, Aziz Huq Jan 2012

The Institution Matching Canon, Aziz Huq

Articles

This Article identifies and analyzes a transsubstantive tool of constitutional doctrine that to date has escaped scholarly attention. The Article terms this device the "institution matching" canon. It can be stated briefly as follows: When the government makes a decision that may impinge upon a liberty or equality interest-which may or may not be directly judicially enforced otherwise-a court should determine whether the component of government that made the decision has actual competence in and responsibility for the policy justifications invoked to curtail the interest. If not, the court should reject the government action but leave open the possibility of …

The Intoxication Defence: Constitutionally Impaired And In Need Of Rehabilitation, Gerry Ferguson Jan 2012

The Intoxication Defence: Constitutionally Impaired And In Need Of Rehabilitation, Gerry Ferguson

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

What are the rules governing intoxication as a defence, and are any of those rules unconstitutional? in this paper, I argue that the current rules are in many respects illogical and unprincipled, and in some respects are probably unconstitutional. I the n recommend specific but controversial changes to those rules. Canadian jurisprudence on involuntary intoxication as a defence is underdeveloped. The definition of “involuntary intoxication” contains an objective component that arguably offends section 7 of the Charter, at least for subjective fault offences. I also recommend an expansion of the defence of involuntary intoxication to include, as three Australian jurisdictions …

Using Inquiry-Based Teaching And Kids Inquiry Conferences To Strengthen Elementary Science Instruction And To Encourage More Students To Pursue Science Careers, Paula A. Magee, Ryan Flessner Jan 2012

Using Inquiry-Based Teaching And Kids Inquiry Conferences To Strengthen Elementary Science Instruction And To Encourage More Students To Pursue Science Careers, Paula A. Magee, Ryan Flessner

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

For the past 20 years, there has been a push to improve the teaching and learning of science in elementary schools. One strong reason for this was the release of the National Science Education Standards (NRC 1996). The Standards articulated not only what K-12 students should know (science content standards), but also how science teachers needed to teach (teaching standards) and be continuously supported (professional development standards). The Standards also considered ways to support inquiry-based and meaningful science learning for K-12 students (program and system standards). According to the NRC, one ot:·the four reasons underpinning all of this is because …

Good Men Grow Corn: Embodied Ecological Heritage In A Belizean Mopan Community, Kristina Baines Jan 2012

Good Men Grow Corn: Embodied Ecological Heritage In A Belizean Mopan Community, Kristina Baines

Publications and Research

Recent developments in land rights and land use in the Toledo district, Belize has generated anthropological and activist interest surrounding traditional ecological knowledge and practice, and the role of heritage in communities. This study explores the connection between ecological knowledge and practices, and the concurrent construction of heritage, and community health and wellness, broadly defined. Developing and using the concept of “embodied ecological heritage,” this dissertation takes a phenomenological approach to understanding the convergence of ecological heritage and health in multiple realms of everyday life, arguing that lived experience of participating in “traditional”practices is fundamentally connected to wellness in the …

Writing At Transitions: Using In-Class Writing As A Learning Tool, Nate Mickelson Jan 2012

Writing At Transitions: Using In-Class Writing As A Learning Tool, Nate Mickelson

Publications and Research

Drawing on the fundamentals of Writing to Learn pedagogy, this article describes how teachers across the disciplines can use in-class writing as a learning tool. Because in-class writing activities foreground the power of writing as a means for processing and integrating information, using writing prompts during times of transition common to every class—at the beginning or end of class, when moving from topic to topic or activity to activity, or at the conclusion of a particularly rich discussion—can serve to focus and extend student engagement. Offering practical advice and examples from his own teaching experiences, the author shows how structuring …

Scarlet-Letter Politics: The Rhetoric Of Shame In The Campaign To Unseat President Barack Hussein Obama, Myra Mendible

Ethnic Studies Review

This essay considers the politics of racial shaming as deployed against Barack Obama, arguing that it targeted "black" and "foreign" bodies as threats to the "American" body politic.
