Why Was One Sixth Of The 1830 Book Of Mormon Set From The Original Manuscript?, Noel B. Reynolds, Royal Skousen
Why Was One Sixth Of The 1830 Book Of Mormon Set From The Original Manuscript?, Noel B. Reynolds, Royal Skousen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Evidence from the manuscripts of the Book of Mormon (as well as internal evidence within the Book of Mormon itself) shows that for one sixth of the text, from Helaman 13:17 to the end of Mormon, the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was set from the original (dictated) manuscript rather than from the printer’s manuscript. For five-sixths of the text, the 1830 edition was set from the printer’s manuscript, the copy prepared specifi cally for the 1830 typesetter to use as his copytext. In 1990, when the use of the original manuscript as copytext was first discov ered, …

“Thou Knowest That I Believe” Invoking The Spirit Of The Lord As Council Witness In 1 Nephi 11, David Bokovoy
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
T he Book of Mormon features an esoteric exchange between the prophet Nephi and the Spirit of the Lord on an exceedingly high mountain. The following essay explores some of the ways in which an Israelite familiar with ancient religious experiences and scribal techniques might have interpreted this event. The analysis shows that Nephi’s conversation, as well as other simi lar accounts in the Book of Mormon, echoes an ancient temple motif. As part of this paradigm, the essay explores the manner in which the text depicts the Spirit of the Lord in a role associated with members of the …

The New Pilgrim's Progress, Anglican Longings, And Eighteenth-Century Missionary Fantasies, Laura M. Stevens
The New Pilgrim's Progress, Anglican Longings, And Eighteenth-Century Missionary Fantasies, Laura M. Stevens
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
At its core, this paper is a recovery project, focused on a neglected novel, and so I will begin with a brief plot summary. The New Pilgrim's Progress, or, The Pious Indian Convert, first published in London in 1748, tells the story of its narrator, James Walcot, a young Anglican clergyman who, feeling called to convert the heathens of America, emigrates to Jamaica. There he nearly triggers an uprising by telling slaves that he believes slavery to be unjust. He then sails to Charles Town, South Carolina, where he becomes personal chaplain to a wealthy landowner and assists …

Geneva International Centre For Humanitarian Demining 2012 Annual Report, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
The protection of civilians against all types of explosive weapons is at the core of the GICHD mandate. I am pleased to see that the United Nations Secretary-General, in his latest report on the protection of civilians in armed conflict of 22 May 2012, has urged relevant actors to undertake and support further collection and analysis of data related to the humanitarian impact caused by explosive weapons. In this vein, the GICHD has started to work on a classification scheme for explosive weapons.
In March 2012, a munitions depot exploded in the city centre of Brazzaville, resulting in hundreds of …

Mapping Writing Development In Young Bilingual Learners, Ana M. Hernández, Ed.D., Magaly Lavadenz, Ph.D.
Practitioner Journal Articles
A growing interest in Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) programs has led to increased attention to bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism. This article describes the writing development in Spanish and English for 49 kindergarten students in a 50/50 Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program. Over the course of an academic year, the authors collected writing samples to analyze evidence of cross-linguistic resource sharing using a grounded theoretical approach to compare and contrast writing samples to determine patterns of cross-linguistic resource sharing in English and Spanish. The authors identified four patterns: phonological, syntactic, lexical, and metalinguistic awareness. Findings indicated that emergent writers applied similar strategies …
Logogenesis And Appraisal: A Systemic Functional Analysis Of English And Japanese Language Arts Textbooks, Shinji Kawamitsu
Logogenesis And Appraisal: A Systemic Functional Analysis Of English And Japanese Language Arts Textbooks, Shinji Kawamitsu
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the distinct and purposeful differences of the language of evaluation between English textbooks and Japanese textbooks. This thesis applies Appraisal system in Systemic Functional Linguistics to the language arts textbooks used in 2nd to 4th grade classrooms in Japan and in the U.S. The analysis shows that the number of Attitudinal lexical items, especially invoked Attitude, is notably higher than that in the English texts. The analysis also shows that the Japanese texts employ Judgment lexis, which is a resource to form a sense of group harmony, more than the other Attitudinal …

Balancing The Process Of Democratization And The Continuation Of State Stability: The Case Of Mexico, Elise Dunn
Balancing The Process Of Democratization And The Continuation Of State Stability: The Case Of Mexico, Elise Dunn
Government and International Relations Honors Papers
Through an empirical analysis of the state of Mexico, this thesis examines the transition to democracy from a previously consolidated, stable authoritarian system in order to make conclusions regarding the challenges inherent in such a transition for the maintenance of stability. Previously, Mexico was ruled under the hegemonic party, the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) from 1929-2000.
This research finds that the PRI’s hegemonic structure relied on unsustainable corporatist institutions that were built, not to strengthen the state, but rather to strengthen the party; as such, Mexico’s nascent democracy is left vulnerable with ineffective institutions with which to deal with crises …

Listen Carefully Y Presta Atención: Selective Attention In Late L2 Learners, Jennifer Anderson
Psychology Student Work
The current study sought to understand the effects of two languages on selective attention in a complex listening environment. Adult second language learners of Spanish of high or low proficiency attended to one spoken message in one ear while ignoring another from their other ear in a dichotic listening task. The language of each message was either English or Spanish. While both proficiency level groups performed worse on the dichotic listening task when attending to their second language, the high proficiency group was significantly better than the low proficiency group at attending to their second language and ignoring their native …

Consider academics who are committed to learning, teaching, and ongoing interaction with communities beyond the university, and who are simultaneously not satisfied with the learning opportunities for children in their community schools. What roles might they play in their local community? One answer, made compelling by contemporary models in practice, involves institution building—specifically, the co-construction and operation of critically engaged, action-oriented research groups to address challenges facing students, families, and schools. Examples include CREATE at The University of California at San Diego (Mehan 2008), The Cesar E. Chavez Institute at San Francisco State (Duncan-Andrade and Morrell 2008), The Llano Grande …
Lessons From Libya: A Situational Approach To The Generic Criticism Of President Obama's March 28, 2011 Address To The Nation On Libya, Amy L. Schumacher
Lessons From Libya: A Situational Approach To The Generic Criticism Of President Obama's March 28, 2011 Address To The Nation On Libya, Amy L. Schumacher
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Many scholars have called the utility of the generic method of rhetorical criticism into question. Adopting a situational approach to generic rhetorical criticism increases the value of the method considerably. By analyzing situational constituents (scene, purpose, agent, act, agency, and audience) surrounding a discourse, a critic gains a holistic understanding of that text. When coupled with generic comparisons - whether the critic proceeds inductively or deductively - he or she can then trace the recurrent rhetorical strategies across time and place and, simultaneously, highlight the elements unique to the particular rhetor and discourse. I demonstrate this approach through an analysis …

Back To Freedom: From Surviving To Thriving An Introduction, Ana I. Vallejo
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
Trafficked persons, even before they are tricked, coerced or forced into domestic servitude generally come from vulnerable and/or disadvantaged groups consisting primarily, though not exclusively, of women and children. Kevin Hsu observes that historically, domestic servants and victims of domestic servitude in the United States tend to come from poor and marginalized groups, and that their day-to-day relations with their 'master' is one of "dependence and subjection, of discipline, governance, and control.".The economic relation of subordination is commonly reinforced by social or sub-cultural mores, which hold trafficked persons responsible, and even grateful to the trafficker, despite the fact that the …

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program Year Two Outcome Evaluation Report For The Southern Nevada Health District, Nevada Institute For Children’S Research And Policy, Southern Nevada Health District, Dawn Davidson, Tara Phebus, Alyson Baker
Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy Reports
In the fall of 2010 the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) was awarded funding from the Federal Office of Adolescent Health to implement an evidence based teen pregnancy prevention curriculum. They have partnered with the Department of Juvenile Justice Services and the Clark County Department of Family Services to offer this curriculum to the youth in juvenile detention, probation, and life skills classes for youth aging out of the foster care system. The Nevada Institute for Children’s Research and Policy (NICRP) has been contracted to complete the outcome evaluation for this program and is collecting data to help measure the …
