Conflict Detection And Resolution For Product Line Design In A Collaborative Decision Making Environment, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Eric Christopher Barnes, Juha Erik Savolainen Mar 2012

Conflict Detection And Resolution For Product Line Design In A Collaborative Decision Making Environment, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Eric Christopher Barnes, Juha Erik Savolainen

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ensuring that the non-functional requirements (NFRs), of a system are satisfied is an essential task in software development. However, this task is complicated by the fact that many NFRs conflict with each other from multiple perspectives. It is essential to resolve conflicts collectively in a collaborative decision-making process since stakeholders often disagree on how conflicts should be resolved. in this paper, we describe a method for dividing high-level NFR conflicts within a product line into more manageable sub-problems. Stakeholders make use of an argumentation based collaborative decision support system to determine which design alternatives provide the best trade-offs between NFRs. …

Investigating Esl Graduate Students’ Intercultural Experiences Of Academic English Writing: A First Person Narration Of A Streamlined Qualitative Study Process, Lianhong Gao

The Qualitative Report

This report is a first person narration of the entire process of a qualitative study exploring the impact of ESL students’ native cultural and rhetorical conventions, as well as classroom cultures on their academic English writing in American universities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. A coding system was constructed to analyze transcriptions of the interviews. The study found that there were impacts of L1 culture on the students’ academic English writing, but their effects were minor. The main factors associated with ESL students’ English writing were their familiarity with the disciplinary contents and general composing skills. Implications for culturally …

Method And Writing: A Review Of Adams’ Narrating The Close, Sandra L. Faulkner Mar 2012

Method And Writing: A Review Of Adams’ Narrating The Close, Sandra L. Faulkner

The Qualitative Report

The reviewer starts the review with her reading strategy of beginning with the discussion of the method. She argues that Adams’ work expands definitions of culture and what constitutes the field in ethnographic work in a beautifully written piece of autoethnography. Adams marries method, writing, and topic matter. The reviewer believes that this text would be appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students as well as those of us wanting an excellent example of autoethnography. In conclusion, the reviewer claims excitement to see where this will take ethnographers in the future, and especially those of us interested in the study of …

Diverse Teacher Candidates' Perceptions Of A University's Special Education Preparation Program, Ashleigh Jay Cramer Mar 2012

Diverse Teacher Candidates' Perceptions Of A University's Special Education Preparation Program, Ashleigh Jay Cramer

Theses and Dissertations

As part of a four year professional development program centered on increasing cultural responsiveness at Brigham Young University, special education faculty members conducted interviews with teacher candidates who had completed the special education program. The interviews primarily focused on the candidates' experiences during their time in the program. The interviews were audio and/or videotaped and transcribed verbatim. The transcriptions were then analyzed using the inductive analysis design for qualitative research (Hatch, 2002). The candidates expressed what types of learning activities as well as what professors did or did not do that helped them to be successful. Also emerging from the …

Centralized Visualization Of Distributed Collaborative Note-Taking, Aaron W. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This development project originated in response to the enormous daily increase of information that becomes available on the internet as a result of social media activities. Twitter, a quintessential example of social media, can also be considered a framework for collaborative note-taking. The October 2010 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided an interesting example of distributed collaborative note-taking as thousands of Twitter users took notes on the conference addresses. The result was a collection of 26,479 tweets. The purpose of this project is to describe a novel information visualization algorithm that generates a centralized …

The Efficacy Of Small Multiples In The Visual Language Of Instructional Designs, Douglas B. Stringham Mar 2012

The Efficacy Of Small Multiples In The Visual Language Of Instructional Designs, Douglas B. Stringham

Theses and Dissertations

The visualization strategy of small multiples (Tufte, 1983, 1990, 1997) is not merely the clever or ordered arrangement of similar and personable images; small multiples—purposeful compositions of similarly sized, repeated illustrations—contain a great deal more than the sum of their respective parts. The purpose of this study is to define a set of objectives and guiding tactics for using small multiples in the visual language of instructional designs. This study aims to (1) compile a targeted literature review cataloging the historical treatment of small multiples and their pedagogical and cognitive virtues and (2) analyze examples of small multiples usage in …

Navigating The Changing Face Of Beginning Reading Instruction: Am I Right Back Where I Started?, Deanna M. Perry

Theses and Dissertations

This self-study explores my experience as a beginning reading teacher over a span of more than 30 years. It includes a brief look at theoretical models of reading and philosophical movements that impacted my experience as a classroom teacher and then lays my classroom experience and practice against the literature and historical background related to beginning reading instruction. The question studied is "How did the district-mandated curriculum in each era shape me as a literacy teacher and literacy instruction in my school context?" The purpose of the study is to unearth the impact of educational policies on my classroom practice. …

Technology’S Impact On Student – Faculty Interaction: Issues For Collective Bargaining, Mark Piwinsky, Mary Beth Leidman, Mathew Mckeague Mar 2012

Technology’S Impact On Student – Faculty Interaction: Issues For Collective Bargaining, Mark Piwinsky, Mary Beth Leidman, Mathew Mckeague

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Today’s faculty confront challenges that are reshaping their workload and creating new demands and expectations. A decline in the proportion of tenured faculty and an increased reliance on temporary faculty is problematic in a time of strong enrollment growth. The American Association of University Professors (Trends in Faculty Status, 2007) reports the proportion of full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty has declined from 56.8% in fall 1975 to 31.2% in fall 2007. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics (2005, 2008) show enrollments increased from 17.92 million in fall 2005 to 19.57 million in fall 2008. Schaffhauser (2010) reports that …

State Building Codes: Firm Ceilings, Hard Floors, Or Shaky Foundations For Local Construction And Rehabilitation Standards, James Bross Mar 2012

State Building Codes: Firm Ceilings, Hard Floors, Or Shaky Foundations For Local Construction And Rehabilitation Standards, James Bross

Georgia State University Law Review

In law reform, as in life, the foam rubber pillow is often the best metaphor for the unforeseen effects of earnest efforts: just when all energy is directed at the annoying lump on one side, the far side springs out vengefully. During the 1960's, legal scholars and presidential commissions pressed earnestly for statewide building codes to serve as ceilings on local standards which are expensive impediments to mass-produced low-income housing; the legal scholars of the 1980's are eager to preserve historic structures whose rehabilitation is impeded by the inflexible floor of state codes under local standards. This article will evaluate …
