Vowel Quality And Language Contact In Miami-Cuban Spanish, Brandon M. Rogers Mar 2012

Vowel Quality And Language Contact In Miami-Cuban Spanish, Brandon M. Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

The current study investigated vowel quality in Miami Cuban Spanish, looking specifically at the influence of English on the Spanish vowel system. The vowel production of eleven Miami Cubans from three generations is investigated. Subjects include six males and five females. Three different elicitation instruments were used. The first was a brief sociolinguistic interview, the second was a story that the participants were asked to read aloud. Carrier words were embedded into the story in order to obtain multiple samples of both stressed and unstressed vowels. For the third instrument, subjects were asked to read a list of words with …

Entropy And The Complexity Of Graphs Revisited, Abbe Mowshowitz, Matthias Dehmer Mar 2012

Entropy And The Complexity Of Graphs Revisited, Abbe Mowshowitz, Matthias Dehmer

Publications and Research

This paper presents a taxonomy and overview of approaches to the measurement of graph and network complexity. The taxonomy distinguishes between deterministic (e.g., Kolmogorov complexity) and probabilistic approaches with a view to placing entropy-based probabilistic measurement in context. Entropy-based measurement is the main focus of the paper. Relationships between the different entropy functions used to measure complexity are examined; and intrinsic (e.g., classical measures) and extrinsic (e.g., Körner entropy) variants of entropy-based models are discussed in some detail.

Building Universal Digital Libraries: An Agenda For Copyright Reform, Hannibal Travis Mar 2012

Building Universal Digital Libraries: An Agenda For Copyright Reform, Hannibal Travis

Pepperdine Law Review

This article proposes a series of copyright reforms to pave the way for digital library projects like Project Gutenberg, the Internet Archive, and Google Print, which promise to make much of the world's knowledge easily searchable and accessible from anywhere. Existing law frustrates digital library growth and development by granting overlapping, overbroad, and near-perpetual copyrights in books, art, audiovisual works, and digital content. Digital libraries would benefit from an expanded public domain, revitalized fair use doctrine and originality requirement, rationalized systems for copyright registration and transfer, and a new framework for compensating copyright owners for online infringement without imposing derivative …

Converting Ovid: Translation, Religion, And Allegory In Arthur Golding's Metamorphoses, Andrew Robert Wells Mar 2012

Converting Ovid: Translation, Religion, And Allegory In Arthur Golding's Metamorphoses, Andrew Robert Wells

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have not adequately explained the disparity between Arthur Golding's career as a fervent Protestant translator of continental reformers like John Calvin and Theodore Beza with his most famous translation, Ovid's Metamorphoses. His motivations for completing the translation included a nationalistic desire to enrich the English language and the rewards of the courtly system of patronage. Considering the Protestant opposition to pagan and wanton literature, it is apparent that Golding was forced to carefully contain the dangerous material of his translation. Golding avoids Protestant criticism of traditional allegorical readings of pagan poetry by adjusting his translation to show that …

Indexing And Dialectical Transcendence: Kenneth Burke's Critical Method, David Erland Isaksen Mar 2012

Indexing And Dialectical Transcendence: Kenneth Burke's Critical Method, David Erland Isaksen

Theses and Dissertations

Kenneth Burke has been described as arguably the most important rhetorician and critical theorist of the twentieth century, and yet an important part of his scholarship has been generally overlooked by the academic community. The pentad has become the most prominent "Burkean" framework for analyzing texts, yet Kenneth Burke himself preferred "a more direct" way of approaching texts which he named "indexing." This thesis recreates this method from the pieces found in his scholarly writing, personal correspondence, and the papers his students produced for the class he taught at Bennington College. Kenneth Burke believed indexing could uncover the "pattern of …

Rhetoric In Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Healing Minds Through Argumentation, Celeste Lloyd Zsembery Mar 2012

Rhetoric In Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Healing Minds Through Argumentation, Celeste Lloyd Zsembery

Theses and Dissertations

The fields of psychology and rhetoric share the goal of improving human mental health and behavior through persuasion. This thesis traces the history of rhetoric and psychology theory, focusing on the parallel theories of Nienkamp's internal rhetoric and Herman's dialogical self. Both theories model the human mind as having multiple psyches that actively interact to interpret human experience and project human behavior. I conclude with a case study of anorexic patients using ethos, pathos, and logos in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), arguing that principles of rhetoric can help patients with mental disorders cognitively realign their thinking more effectively than drug …

Employment After Graduation: Career Path Trends Of Tesol Ma And Graduate Certificate Students, Eimi Priddis Mar 2012

Employment After Graduation: Career Path Trends Of Tesol Ma And Graduate Certificate Students, Eimi Priddis

Theses and Dissertations

As English expands across the world, quality English teachers are increasingly needed. However, reports that even well-trained TESOL professionals have a hard time obtaining stable employment are prevalent. This study sought to provide some solid evidence about employment trends in TESOL. It is based on a survey administered to alumni who graduated between the years of 1973 and 2008 from Brigham Young University's TESOL program. The results indicate that graduates spend about half of their career time in TESOL-related employment. Most are involved in teaching, but jobs in administration, materials development,or testing are more likely to be full-time and offer …

Utilizing Participatory Action Research To Foster Effective Family/School Collaboration At An Urban Prek-8 Catholic School, David Shriberg, Ruth Schumacher, Kara C. Mcmahon, Sofia Flores, Gregory E. Moy, Joanna Swidzinski, Nicole A. Tompkins

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper describes a study focused on promoting culturally responsive collaboration practices at an urban preK-8 Catholic school. Using participatory action research (PAR) as its framework, a team of school stakeholders and university faculty and students from the psychology department partnered to create a participant-driven data collection and analysis procedure that culminated in the implementation of a new communication protocol judged by educators and parents to have led to significant improvements in family-school communications. Lessons learned from this experience, particularly as they relate to the use of PAR principles in an urban Catholic school, will be shared.

Response To Student Literacy Needs At Mother Of Sorrows Catholic School, Jennifer A. Beltramo Mar 2012

Response To Student Literacy Needs At Mother Of Sorrows Catholic School, Jennifer A. Beltramo

Journal of Catholic Education

More than ever, the challenges facing Catholic schools and Catholic school leaders require a “readiness to renew and adapt” (Vatican Council II, 1965). The skills and dispositions developed through applied action research—inquiry that is systematic, practitioner-driven, and change oriented—are integral to the formation of teachers and leaders who will meet these challenges head on and strengthen Catholic schools for generations to come. The following action research project was conducted by a Catholic school leader who is a recent graduate of the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program at the University of Notre Dame. The article you will read is one product …

The Process Of Creation: A Novel Methodology For Analyzing Multimodal Data, Erica Rosenfeld Halverson, Michelle Bass, David Woods Mar 2012

The Process Of Creation: A Novel Methodology For Analyzing Multimodal Data, Erica Rosenfeld Halverson, Michelle Bass, David Woods

The Qualitative Report

In the 21st century, meaning making is a multimodal act; we communicate what we know and how we know it using much more than printed text on a blank page. As a result, qualitative researchers need new methodologies, methods, and tools for working with the complex artifacts that our research subjects produce. In this article we describe the co-development of an analytic methodology and a tool for working with youth produced films as multimodal artifacts of youth engagement with identity. Specifically, we describe how to employ this multimodal framework in data analysis, with an emphasis on how different modes interact …

Power By Possession: Cuban-American Types And Collecting In The Agüero Sisters, Ashley Noelle Walton Mar 2012

Power By Possession: Cuban-American Types And Collecting In The Agüero Sisters, Ashley Noelle Walton

Theses and Dissertations

Although many other ethnic and cultural studies have moved beyond essentialist labels and categories, Cuban-American studies persists in categorizing the people belonging to the cultural group in terms of how much time they have spent in Cuba, thus creating a hierarchy of "authentic" Cuban-ness. Isabel Alvarez Borland gives a comprehensive overview of Cuban-American literary categories, and through her description we can see how these categories may lend themselves to stratification. These categories include: the first generation, the second generation, the one-and-a-halfer, and the ethnic writer. To say that one generation of Cuban exiles is more or less authentically Cuban discounts …

The Narrative Approach To Mediation, Toran Hansen Mar 2012

The Narrative Approach To Mediation, Toran Hansen

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Narrative Mediation is an approach and methodology that can offer mediators an innovative way to handle conflict intervention. It is important to note that "it is not a model that can be ransacked for techniques without damaging the intent and process it requires.. .because the foundational view is vastly different [from other approaches]." It may, however, particularly appeal to mediators with a postmodernist theoretical bent who prefer to work with the accounts of parties in conflict rather than attempting to get at "the truth" because they recognize that any truth brings with it implicit bias. The explicit role of mediator …

The Neutral As Lie Detector: You Can't Judge Participants By Their Demeanor, Bruce Fraser Mar 2012

The Neutral As Lie Detector: You Can't Judge Participants By Their Demeanor, Bruce Fraser

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

As mediators we are often faced with sharply conflicting stories. One of the advantages of mediation is that we sometimes can solve the underlying problem without determining who did what, to whom, and when. Indeed, experience has shown that mediation is not a good process for finding the truth because it has none of the tools (such as testimony under oath) used for this purpose in the judicial system. Still, mediators often spend a good deal of time and effort trying to determine who is telling the truth.

Predicting Filipino Mothers' And Fathers' Reported Use Of Corporal Punishment From Education, Authoritarian Attitudes, And Endorsement Of Corporal Punishment, Rosanne M. Jocson, Liane Peña Alampay, Jennifer E. Lansford Mar 2012

Predicting Filipino Mothers' And Fathers' Reported Use Of Corporal Punishment From Education, Authoritarian Attitudes, And Endorsement Of Corporal Punishment, Rosanne M. Jocson, Liane Peña Alampay, Jennifer E. Lansford

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

The relations of education, authoritarian childrearing attitudes, and endorsement of corporal punishment to Filipino parents' reported use of corporal punishment were examined using two waves of data. Structured interviews using self-report questionnaires were conducted with 117 mothers and 98 fathers from 120 families when their children were 8 years old, and when their children were 9 years old. Path analyses showed that, among mothers, higher education predicted lower authoritarian attitudes, which in turn predicted lower reports of corporal punishment use. Among fathers, higher education predicted lower endorsement of corporal punishment, which in turn predicted lower reports of its use. Results …

The Development Of Two Units For Basic Training And Resources For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages: "Tutoring Guidelines" And "Designing An Overall Plan For A Course", Beth Anne Firnges Mar 2012

The Development Of Two Units For Basic Training And Resources For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages: "Tutoring Guidelines" And "Designing An Overall Plan For A Course", Beth Anne Firnges

Theses and Dissertations

A team of graduate students from Brigham Young University under the supervision of the main author, Dr. Henrichsen, collaborated on creating a book with an accompanying website, Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (BTRTESOL). The entire program consists of 10 main sections with nearly 50 units addressing topics that novice teachers can choose from to help them prepare to teach English to non-native speakers. The BTRTESOL program answers the need for material designed for novice teachers, material that will help them to be better prepared in a minimalistic, non-overwhelming way. The goal of this …

The Impact Of Parental Involvement On Preschool Children’S Later Language Development In Low-Income Hispanic English Language Learners, Yanjie Long Mar 2012

The Impact Of Parental Involvement On Preschool Children’S Later Language Development In Low-Income Hispanic English Language Learners, Yanjie Long

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Previous research has revealed the importance of parental involvement in children’s language development (Raikes, et. al., 2006). However, few studies have focused in detail on the impact of parental involvement on the language development of English Language Learners (ELLs). The purpose of this study is to examine how early and concurrent parental involvement affects preschool children’s later language development in a sample of low-income Hispanic ELLs. More specifically, two aspects of parental involvement will be examined: (1) home support of language and cognitive stimulation; and (2) parent emotional supportiveness. The results indicate that early home language and cognitive stimulation and …

Teachers As Mediators: An Exploration Of Situated English Teaching, Peter Kelly, Ulrike Hohmann, Nick Pratt, Hans Dorf Mar 2012

Teachers As Mediators: An Exploration Of Situated English Teaching, Peter Kelly, Ulrike Hohmann, Nick Pratt, Hans Dorf

Plymouth Institute of Education

Within the context of lower secondary English teaching in South West England, this study identifies in broad terms the competing goals between which English teachers mediate and the explicit and hidden tensions that result. To understand the interactions of competing goals, teachers’ goal-oriented behaviours are referenced to a set of idealised ‘role types’ based on the dimensions of goals, norms, discourses and practices. It is asserted that competing goals, significant to particular educational circumstances, emanate from various sometimes contradictory local, national and perhaps broader social and cultural influences on practice. Yet the teachers observed moved smoothly between goal-oriented behaviours in …
