Political Emotions: Toward A Fresh Perspective On Collective Emotion In Composition Work, Ingrid Jonna Gilfus
Political Emotions: Toward A Fresh Perspective On Collective Emotion In Composition Work, Ingrid Jonna Gilfus
Writing Program – Dissertations
This dissertation examines theories of emotion in politically contentious discourse in order to better understand the implications for teachers and students in composition classrooms where critical pedagogical practices lead to contentious political work. I suggest that partly as a result of the social and political turn in composition studies, the expectation for disrupting the normative political values and beliefs of students has become part of the curriculum in many writing classrooms. Yet teachers and students charged with such learning goals may be largely unaware of and unprepared for the role emotion might play in this teaching and learning situation. I …
Evaluating Computer-Assisted Language Learning: An Integrated Approach To Effectiveness Research In Call (Review), Deborah J. Crusan
Evaluating Computer-Assisted Language Learning: An Integrated Approach To Effectiveness Research In Call (Review), Deborah J. Crusan
English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications
Since its inception, the field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has suffered from skeptics questioning whether technology and multimedia have anything to add to language learning. These uncertainties clearly illustrate a need for a comprehensive evaluative model of CALL. In Evaluating Computer-Assisted Language Learning: An Integrated Approach to Effectiveness Research in CALL, Jonathan Leakey asks readers to consider important matters about the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). His purpose for the book centers on gathering evidence for the computer’s impact on language learning. He argues for an integrated approach to the evaluation of CALL and constructs a prototype for …

The Afro-Brazilian Speech Of Calunga: Historical, Sociolinguistic, And Linguistic Considerations, Steven Byrd
Society, Culture and Languages Faculty Publications
Calunga is an Afro-Brazilian speech spoken primarily in and around Patrocínio, Minas Gerais, a rural town located in the western region of the state known as the Triângulo Mineiro. In the early 21st century, this Afro-Brazilian speech exists in a moribund state. The present article is an attempt to provide a basic overview regarding some of the historical, sociolinguistic, and linguistic considerations of this Afro-Brazilian speech community, and how it fits into the larger picture of the African legacy in Brazil in terms of language and culture.

Facilitative Moderation For Online Participation In Erulemaking, Joonsuk Park, Claire Cardie, Cynthia R. Farina, Sally Klingel, Mary J. Newhart, Joan-Josep Vallbé
Cornell e-Rulemaking Initiative Publications
This paper describes the use of facilitative moderation strategies in an online rulemaking public participation system. Rulemaking is one of the U.S. government's most important policymaking methods. Although broad transparency and participation rights are part of its legal structure, significant barriers prevent effective engagement by many groups of interested citizens. Regulation Room, an experimental open-government partnership between academic researchers and government agencies, is a socio-technical participation system that uses multiple methods to lower potential barriers to broader participation. To encourage effective individual comments and productive group discussion in Regulation Room, we adapt strategies for facilitative human moderation originating from social …
"Literal Translation" And The Materiality Of Language: Lu Xun As A Case, Wenjin Cui
"Literal Translation" And The Materiality Of Language: Lu Xun As A Case, Wenjin Cui
Languages, Literatures & Cultures
With his insistence upon the literal rendering in Chinese of foreign texts, especially regarding syntax, Lu Xun’s understanding of “literal translation” strikes a rather distinct note in the modern Chinese literary scene. The intention behind this method, namely, the aim to “retain the tone of the original,” reveals a generative perception of language that takes language as not just the bearer of the already existent thought, but as the formative element of thought that has meaning in itself. This paper seeks to delineate the structural constitution of the materiality of language as grasped by Lu Xun. By comparing the notion …

Analysis Of National Association Of Bilingual Education, Sam J. Baumer
Capstone Collection
This research illustrates the benefits in coalitions as mechanisms for bolstering advocacy by bringing together diverse perspectives to help fuel more creativity in the process of furthering bilingual education and social change. This case study examines the role of the National Alliance for Bilingual Education (NABE) and its policy advocacy approach in the midst of the debate surrounding how best to educate our nations school children. An examination of the historical context of the issue and the current political paradigm that NABE navigates illustrate their approach to tackling the contested issue.

The absence of a translated and validated instrument for measuring marital satisfaction in Brazil, the largest country in South America and fifth most populous country in the world, is a significant barrier for research and mental health service delivery. The purpose of this study was to translate and validate a marital satisfaction scale into Portuguese that would have both empirical credibility and cultural relevance in Brazil. A six-step serial approach was used to simultaneously translate and culturally validate the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS). The translated instrument (RDAS-P) demonstrated good psychometric properties during field testing.

Using Ubuntu: A New Research Trend For Developing Effective Communication Across Cultural Barriers, Cecile W. Garmon, Mandhla Mgijima
Communication Faculty Publication
Language and communication provide great challenges in a global world. New trends in communicating effectively across cultural and geographic boundaries face inherent and often subtle barriers. Generally, communicators do not even realize that they have missed hidden cues until the occasion and opportunity have passed. Enhancing communication requires an individual or group to understand the underlying concepts upon which the language and communication practices depend; these concepts also serve as the basic elements for developing social, economic, educational, political, and other related structures. These underlying concepts form our world views. Comprehending the complex interconnections between language and communication and these …
Leveling The Field Is Not Enough: Promoting Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Teach For America Through The Evaluation Of Intercultural Competence, Colorblindness, White Racial Identity Attitudes, And The Belief That Culture Matters In Education, Amber K. Kim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research study examined constructs and beliefs essential to culturally responsive teachers for the purpose of understanding corps members’ needs and promoting culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) in the Colorado region of Teach for America (TFA). This study employed a transformative, sequential mixed methods design with a theoretical lens of CRP and a corresponding framework for preparing culturally responsive educators described by Villegas and Lucas (2002). First, a quantitative phase assessed participants’ levels of intercultural competence, colorblind racial attitudes, and White racial identity attitudes at two times—upon entering TFA (n = 139) and after one year of teaching and training (n …
Ibn Khaldun And The Modern Social Sciences: A Comparative Theoretical Inquiry Into Society, The State, And Revolution, Douglas H. Garrison
Ibn Khaldun And The Modern Social Sciences: A Comparative Theoretical Inquiry Into Society, The State, And Revolution, Douglas H. Garrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis represents a link in a long chain of recent Western scholarship that has attempted to bring the work of Ibn Khaldun, the late 14th century Tunisian jurist and historian, into the mainstream of historiographic, political, and sociological learning. Why Ibn Khaldun? What makes his work stand out among the classics of pre-modern and early-modern political and social theory? Why are his ideas still relevant to the study of politics and societies today? My thesis attempts to answer these questions through the lenses of comparative political theory and theoretical reinterpretation.
The study hinges on a thematic comparison of Ibn …
Posthumanist Rhetorical Agency, Matt Dunn
Posthumanist Rhetorical Agency, Matt Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The postmodern criticism of humanist agency initiated by Dilip Gaonkar nearly twenty years ago set in motion a discipline wide discussion concerning the conceptualization rhetorical agency. Rhetorical agency is difficult but vital to conceptualize because the term bears directly on the discipline's theorizing about the speaker or rhetor, the effect of the speaker or rhetor's rhetoric on an audience, and the extent to which the speaker or rhetor's agency is constrained by ideology and discourse. What emerged from this discussion about agency did distance the discipline from the humanist conceptualization of rhetorical agency that persisted at the time Gaonkar published …
The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson
The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Eruvin are an innovative solution to the logistical “problem” of carrying on the weekly Sabbath. Boundaries that symbolically extend the walls of private homes into the public sphere, eruvin allow Orthodox Jews to carry objects outside of their homes on the Sabbath, a seemingly simple act that would otherwise be prohibited. Constructed according to intricate Rabbinic specifications, eruvin use existing architectural elements such as walls, train tracks, roadways and telephone wires, as well as natural features like rivers to create a continuous boundary. This paper will examine the theoretical significance of creating such a space. My argument maintains that beyond …

Reauthorization of the Head Start Act in 2007 called for new standards of quality education and evidenced-based practices for gathering child outcomes and assessment data. Furthermore, the act stipulates partnerships between public education K-12 and preschools; a relationship that traditionally held its distance due to age eligibility. With the recent acquisition of the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge grant, Washington state is now recognized for its leadership in this field. This paper will take into consideration these efforts and further explore options for creating seamless transitions for children and families as they enter the public school system. This …
Examining The Determinants Of Hotel Chain Expansion Through International Franchising, Ilan Alon, Liqiang Ni, Youcheng Wang
Examining The Determinants Of Hotel Chain Expansion Through International Franchising, Ilan Alon, Liqiang Ni, Youcheng Wang
Faculty Publications
This study proposes and tests an agency-based organizational model of internationalization through franchising in the hotel sector. Using data obtained from a Franchisor Questionnaire 2001-2008, we analyzed a panel of 117 observations of 17 U.S.-based hotels. Our analysis reveals that a hotel franchisor’s decision to internationalize through franchising is positively related to the percentage of franchises, the ratio of franchised units to the total number of units. The article contributes to the literature by empirically modeling international franchising of hotels, which present unique characteristics among franchising companies, with a high investment capital requirement, maturity in the product life cycle, and …

Concordia Journal -Center For Hispanic Studies 25 Years, Dale Meyer, Alberto Garcia, Beatriz Hoppe, Eloy Gonzalez, Mark Kempff, Leopoldo A. Sanchez, Douglas Groll, Gregory Klotz
Artículos obra entre Hispano/Latinos
If the cover didn't give it away, this issue of Concordia Journal is a special theme issue celebrating the 25 years of Concordia Seminary's Center for Hispanic Studies, formerly the Hispanic Institute of Theology. Perhaps nothing more needs to be said than that.
Why? Because the articles speak for themselves, representing, at least metaphorically, the past, present, and future of the Latino experience of Lutheranism and, more broadly, Christianity in the Americas. And the editorial roundtable speaks with urgency about what the Latino contribution to American Lutheranism will mean within a society that will soon have no majorities, but a …
Reconciling Eros And Agape: The English Catholic Artistic Response To Reforms, Nicole M. Coonradt
Reconciling Eros And Agape: The English Catholic Artistic Response To Reforms, Nicole M. Coonradt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the English Catholic artistic response to reforms--reforms being both internal and external to the Catholic Church--as part of the Catholic Reformation. "Response," for the purposes of this project, may be defined in terms of an "answer" in an ongoing dialogue about the Catholic position and may be seen as both conciliatory and apologetic in nature. Understanding this response is useful when we consider the role of rhetoric and poetry in society and the attendant contemporary theories thereof, in their historical context, especially the duty of the poet. The recent "revisionist" history is central to understanding art contextually. …

The Journey To Peace And Healing: Discovering Identity Through Culture, Tradition, And Indigenous Knowledege, Vanessa Baíz Soto
Ethnic Studies
An accurate account of U.S. history is that of imperialism and colonization that includes the systematic extermination of indigenous populations, development of capitalism supported by slavery, and the exploitation of labor of oppressed populations, all supported by racist ideologies and practices. These ideologies and practices have been perpetuated and continue to plague the current state of colonized peoples. History has perpetuated itself and colonized peoples remain in a state of siege in which identities have been lost and cultures, traditions, and knowledge appropriated—all contributing to the loss of peace and balance within our lives and communities. This has been my …

Incorporating Engineering Design Challenges Into Stem Courses, Dan L. Householder, Christine E. Hailey
Engineering Education Faculty Publications
Successful strategies for incorporating engineering design challenges into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses in American high schools are presented in this paper. The developers have taken the position that engineering design experiences should be an important component of the high school education of all American youth. In most instances, these experiences in engineering design are infused into instruction programs in standards-based courses in science, technology, or mathematics. Sometimes the courses are designated as engineering courses and the engineering design component is emphasized. A growing number of researchers seek to understand whether the development of engineering habits of thought …

A Novel Algorithm To Forecast Enrollment Based On Fuzzy Time Series, Haneen T. Jasim, Abdul G. Jasim Salim, Kais I. Ibraheem
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we propose a new method to forecast enrollments based on fuzzy time series. The proposed method belongs to the first order and time-variant methods. Historical enrollments of the University of Alabama from year 1948 to 2009 are used in this study to illustrate the forecasting process. By comparing the proposed method with other methods we will show that the proposed method has a higher accuracy rate for forecasting enrollments than the existing methods.

This study assessed relations of parental efficacy, experience of stressful life events, and child externalizing behavior to Filipino mothers and fathers’ parental hostility and aggression. Orally-administered surveys were conducted with 117 mothers and 98 fathers for the first year of data collection, and again a year later with 107 mothers and 83 fathers. Path analyses showed that mothers’ report of child externalizing behavior predicted subsequent parental hostility and aggression. For fathers, child externalizing behavior and experience of stressful life events predicted parental hostility and aggression. Additionally, fathers’ parental efficacy was found to moderate the relationship between experience of stressful life …
