Not By Technology Alone: The “Analog” Aspects Of Online Public Engagement In Policymaking, Dmitry Epstein, Mary J. Newhart, Rebecca Vernon Jun 2012

Not By Technology Alone: The “Analog” Aspects Of Online Public Engagement In Policymaking, Dmitry Epstein, Mary J. Newhart, Rebecca Vernon

Cornell e-Rulemaking Initiative Publications

Between Twitter revolutions and Facebook elections, there is a growing belief that information and communication technologies are changing the way democracy is practiced. The discourse around e-government and online deliberation is frequently focused on technical solutions and based in the belief that if you build it correctly they will come. This paper departs from the literature on digital divide to examine barriers to online civic participation in policy deliberation. While most scholarship focuses on identifying and describing those barriers, this study offers an in-depth analysis of what it takes to address them using a particular case study. Based in the …

Toward A Working Theory Of Neurorhetorics, Jeffrey L. Honnold Jun 2012

Toward A Working Theory Of Neurorhetorics, Jeffrey L. Honnold

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This piece makes the claim that rhetoric is first philosophy--before philosophy, epistemology, ontology, or any other field--or that rhetoric is, at the least, on equal footing as these fields because:

empathy--and thusly the impulse for communication--is physiologically hardwired into humans; special distinctions between human and animal are largely artificial constructions, as is evidenced by neurosciences; "hard" science, in the form of neurosciences, is providing entrance points & opportunities for rhetoric to raise its status within the academy; and said neurosciences, in addition to empathy studies, have shown strong evidence supporting linguistic and evolutionary links between humans and other species, thereby …

E-Textbooks Usage By Students At Andrews University: A Study Of Attitudes, Perceptions, And Behaviors, Silas Marques Jun 2012

E-Textbooks Usage By Students At Andrews University: A Study Of Attitudes, Perceptions, And Behaviors, Silas Marques

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Although e-books have been incorporated into the academic library’s collection for over a decade now, it has not been, until today, without question. It is still, as the literature reveals, a controversial topic for librarians, publishers, and users around the globe. Although many researches indicate that patrons still prefer the printed format over the electronic version, the tipping point seems to be reaching us earlier then many might think. The growing availability of e-books to users has begun to affect user perceptions and attitudes, creating more access and usage opportunities, a recent research concluded. This paper presents the results of …

Community-Based Participatory Action Research: An Emerging Alternative, Bryan J. Lagae Jun 2012

Community-Based Participatory Action Research: An Emerging Alternative, Bryan J. Lagae

Open Access Theses

An integrative analysis is presented of positivism, shared epistemology, and the final emerging alternative: community-based participatory action research (CBPAR). The analysis includes how each philosophy defines, views, and analyzes a community. While overcoming the drawbacks to adopting social indicator analyses to study social life, CBPAR provides a strategy that uses collaboration, empowerment, and participatory democracy to engage communities. As part of this investigation, other shared epistemologies such as symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, and previous community-based methods are considered. CBPAR studies have had significant impact on public policy, so much so that communities sometimes “improvements” that they have wanted or needed because …

The Effect Of An Artificially Flattened Fundamental Frequency Contour On Intelligibility In Speakers With Dysarthria, Emily E. Redd Jun 2012

The Effect Of An Artificially Flattened Fundamental Frequency Contour On Intelligibility In Speakers With Dysarthria, Emily E. Redd

Theses and Dissertations

Prosody plays an important role in speech communication. Many individuals with motor speech disorders have decreased prosodic control and thus lower overall intelligibility. Few studies have examined the effect of a flattened prosodic contour on the intelligibility of dysarthric speech, and little is known about the role that listener gender plays in understanding disordered speech. The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of artificial prosodic manipulation on the intelligibility of dysarthric speech as a function of the extent of fundamental frequency (F0) contour flattening. A further goal was to examine the influence of listener gender on intelligibility. …

Urban Place-Conscious Education: Pride In The Inner City, Tamara A. Zwick Jun 2012

Urban Place-Conscious Education: Pride In The Inner City, Tamara A. Zwick

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many educators are turning to place-conscious education as a means of making students’ education relevant and meaningful, as well as encouraging them to contribute to their local communities in positive ways. While many scholars focus their research on place-conscious education on rural areas, a growing body of scholarship examines how place-conscious principles can be applied in inner city schools. Differences in emphasis and approach exist between the rural and urban scholarship, however. This work analyzes some key differences as well as examining why they might exist. Urban students’ relationship with place is complicated by societal messages which make fostering a …

Beyond Boolean, Towards Thinking: Discovery Systems And Information Literacy, Dianne Cmor, Xin Li Jun 2012

Beyond Boolean, Towards Thinking: Discovery Systems And Information Literacy, Dianne Cmor, Xin Li

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

As discovery systems take the Library world by storm, there is a new opportunity for user-centred information literacy programs to emerge. As library search gets easier and varied platforms become unified, the focus of information literacy on search rules and platform choice and navigation will (finally) be able to truly give way to critical thinking and imaginative exploration. These are skills and aptitudes that are needed well beyond the academic environment – making them much more meaningful and useful for many of our users.

This paper will explore how the adoption of discovery systems might impact various user groups in …

Shaping The Way Of Instruction: Fusion Of Games, Lecture And Theatrical Techniques Vs. Traditional Lecture Type Of Library Instruction: Examining Its Effectiveness In Undergraduate Library Instruction, Harold T. Franco, Bob P. Cauilan Jun 2012

Cauilan

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Nowadays, traditional lecture type of library instruction may work only to few audiences. Students exhibit various learning styles and along with this instruction, librarians are also faced with users of new generations. Users who are capable of multitasking, tech-savvy and are more inclined to surfing the net and engaging much on online chat, Internet discussion forums and online games, may find traditional type of instructions ineffective and boring.

In order to give an answer to the effectiveness of the library instruction being conducted in each term at the De La Salle University –Manila, a study has been made to compare …

Critical Ecologies: Violence And Life In The Work Of Jacques Derrida And Theodor Adorno, Richard L. Elmore Ii Jun 2012

Critical Ecologies: Violence And Life In The Work Of Jacques Derrida And Theodor Adorno, Richard L. Elmore Ii

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation offers the first sustained engagement with the question of violence in the works of Jacques Derrida and Theodor Adorno. I argue that the conjunction of questions of violence and with those of “life” indicates a profound sympathy in their thinking and suggests the need to develop a critical dialogue between discourses of life (ecology, environmental science, etc) and philosophy. In early works such as Of Grammatology and “The Actuality of Philosophy,” Derrida and Adorno contend that the structures of thought, meaning, and signification are necessarily incomplete and, as such, are always marked by violent exclusions. “Archē-violence” and “dialectics” …
