Gender, Ethnic Identity, And Environmental Concern In Asian Americans And European Americans, Shawn M. Burn, Patricia L. Winter, Brittany Hori, N. Clayton Silver

Psychology and Child Development

There are relatively few articles in sociology and psychology on gender; ethnicity, and the environment, yet ethnic and gender neutral approaches to sustainability may be incomplete. We studied gender, ethnicity and environmental concern ·with an internet sample of Asian American women (n=157) and men (n=69), and European American women (n=222) and men (n=99). Participants completed the New Ecological Paradigm measure (NEP; Dunlap et al., 2000), the value bases of environmental concern (Schultz, 2000), and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure-Revised (MEIMR; Phinney & Ong, 2007). A 2 ( ethnicity) x 2 (gender) ANOVA found no gender or ethnic differences on the …

Rainfall, Temperature And The Incidence Of Dengue In Central Visayas, Philippines Are Not Correlated, Jay P. Picardal, Allan Roy B. Elnar

CNU Journal of Higher Education

Climatic factors have been considered as agents of the transmission and spread of the dengue virus in the Philippines. This present paper investigated the correlation of two climatic factors; rainfall and temperature, to the cases of dengue fever observed in Region 7, Philippines from 2006-2010. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to determine the extent of correlation between incidence of dengue and climatic factors. Results showed no significant correlation (r2 = 0.2, p = 0.964) between either rainfall or temperature and the prevalence of dengue cases.

In February and March 2009, approximately 1,500 backyard pigs of variable age became sick, and approximately 700 of them died or were euthanized in the Lower Artibonite Valley and the Lower Plateau of the Republic of Haiti. The main clinical sign was posterior ataxia followed by paresis and/or paralysis on the second or third day of illness. No gross lesions were observed at postmortem examinations. The morbidity and mortality were approximately 60% and 40%, respectively. Diagnostic samples (whole blood, brain, tonsil, lymph nodes, spleen, and lung) were negative for Classical swine fever virus and African swine fever virus. Porcine …

Bacterial Artificial Chromosome Clones Of Viruses Comprising The Towne Cytomegalovirus Vaccine, Xiaohong Cui, Stuart P. Adler, Andrew J. Davison, Larry Smith, El-Sayed E. Habib, Michael A. Mcvoy Jan 2012

Bacterial Artificial Chromosome Clones Of Viruses Comprising The Towne Cytomegalovirus Vaccine, Xiaohong Cui, Stuart P. Adler, Andrew J. Davison, Larry Smith, El-Sayed E. Habib, Michael A. Mcvoy

Pediatrics Publications

Bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones have proven invaluable for genetic manipulation of herpesvirus genomes. BAC cloning can also be useful for capturing representative genomes that comprise a viral stock or mixture. The Towne live attenuated cytomegalovirus vaccine was developed in the 1970s by serial passage in cultured fibroblasts. Although its safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy have been evaluated in nearly a thousand human subjects, the vaccine itself has been little studied. Instead, genetic composition and in vitro growth properties have been inferred from studies of laboratory stocks that may not always accurately represent the viruses that comprise the vaccine. Here we …

Study of Biological Complexity Publications

Background

The experimental murine model of leishmaniasis has been widely used to characterize the immune response against Leishmania. CBA mice develop severe lesions, while C57BL/6 present small chronic lesions under L. amazonensis infection. Employing a transcriptomic approach combined with biological network analysis, the gene expression profiles of C57BL/6 and CBA macrophages, before and after L. amazonensis infection in vitro, were compared. These strains were selected due to their different degrees of susceptibility to this parasite.

Results

The genes expressed by C57BL/6 and CBA macrophages, before and after infection, differ greatly, both with respect to absolute number as well as …

Differential Characterization Of Transmission Of Communicable Diseases Among Selected Poor And Non-Poor Communities, Jezyl T. Cempron

CNU Journal of Higher Education

Pneumonia and tuberculosis have been plaguing the populace of the world for centuries, causing millions of deaths. According to the Philippine Health Statistics-Department of Health (2011), pneumonia and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTb) alarmingly remained as the leading communicable respiratory diseases that caused deaths from 1977-2006 in the country. Locally, there is a noticeable variation in the occurrence and transmission of these communicable diseases between poor and non-poor community residents in Metro Cebu (Cebu City Health Office, 2011). Although there were several reasons behind this phenomenon, this study is primarily conducted to determine and compare the percentage of the infected population, probable …

Predicting Disengagement From Care In An Early Psychosis Patient Cohort In The United States, Matthew Kruse Jan 2012

Predicting Disengagement From Care In An Early Psychosis Patient Cohort In The United States, Matthew Kruse

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The current study aims to assess baseline variables which may predict disengagement from care among patients with psychosis seeking treatment at an early intervention clinic in the United States. Based on literature published at sites outside the United States, we predict that duration of untreated psychosis, global assessment of functioning, forensic history, family contact, and substance abuse are predictive of disengagement during the first year of outpatient treatment. Patients were grouped according to whether or not they disengaged from care in a one year follow-up, and compared them on the above discrete and continuous variables with chi-square analysis and Student‟s …

Delayed-Onset Malignant Hyperthermia In Association With Rocuronium Use, Ashton E. Beggs, Jennifer Quinn Mccann, Jan M. Powers

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Purpose Two cases of malignant hyperthermia suspected to be related to the use of a nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocker are reported.

Summary A pharmacogenetic disorder that may occur in as many as 1 in 3000 anesthesia procedures, malignant hyperthermia has been linked to the use of certain anesthetic gases and depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents (e.g., succinylcholine). Although nondepolarizing neuromuscular blockers were cited as contributing to the development of malignant hyperthermia in a small number of published reports, the agents are generally considered safe for use in at-risk patients. Here investigators report two cases in which the nondepolarizing agent rocuronium is thought …

Development Of Resistance To An Introduced Marine Pathogen By A Native Host, Susan E. Ford, David Bushek Jan 2012

Development Of Resistance To An Introduced Marine Pathogen By A Native Host, Susan E. Ford, David Bushek

Journal of Marine Research

In 1957–1959, the introduced protistan parasite, Haplosporidium nelsoni, killed 90–95% of the oysters (Crassostrea virginica) in lower Delaware Bay and about half of those in the upper bay. Shortly thereafter, H. nelsoni-caused mortality in the wild population of the lower bay declined, approximating that of first-generation selectively bred oysters. For nearly three decades thereafter no further change in survival of the wild population was evident, although steady improvement was achieved by continued selective breeding. Survival of the wild population is thought to have plateaued because the great majority of oysters inhabited the upper bay where they …

Effective Population Sizes Of Eastern Oyster Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin) Populations In Delaware Bay, Usa, Yan He, Susan E. Ford, David Bushek, Eric N. Powell, Zhenmin Bao, Ximing Guo Jan 2012

Effective Population Sizes Of Eastern Oyster Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin) Populations In Delaware Bay, Usa, Yan He, Susan E. Ford, David Bushek, Eric N. Powell, Zhenmin Bao, Ximing Guo

Journal of Marine Research

Effective population size (Ne) is an important concept in population genetics as it dictates the rate of genetic change caused by drift. Ne estimates for many marine populations are small relative to the census population size. Small Ne in a large population may indicate high reproductive variance or sweepstakes reproductive success (SRS). The eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) may be prone to SRS due to its high fecundity and high larval mortality. To examine if SRS occurs in the eastern oyster, we studied Ne and genetic variation of oyster populations in Delaware Bay. …

Modeling The Dispersal Of Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Larvae In Delaware Bay, Diego A. Narváez, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell, Eileen E. Hofmann, John Wilkin, Dale B. Haidvogel

Journal of Marine Research

The interactions of circulation and growth processes in determining the horizontal distribution of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae in the Delaware Bay estuary were investigated with a coupled circulation-individual-based larvae model that used environmental conditions from the spawning seasons (mid-June to mid-September) of 1984, 1985, 1986, 2000, and 2001. Particles, representing oyster larvae, were released at five-day intervals from areas in Delaware Bay that correspond to natural oyster reefs. The simulated larval development time was used to estimate potential larval success, determined by the percent of larvae that successfully reached settlement size (330 μm) within the planktonic larval …

The Curious Case Of Arenavirus Entry, And Its Inhibition, Jack H. Nunberg, Joanne York Jan 2012

The Curious Case Of Arenavirus Entry, And Its Inhibition, Jack H. Nunberg, Joanne York

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Arenaviruses comprise a diverse family of enveloped negative-strand RNA viruses that are endemic to specific rodent hosts worldwide. Several arenaviruses cause severe hemorrhagic fevers in humans, including Junin and Machupo viruses in South America and Lassa fever virus in western Africa. Arenavirus entry into the host cell is mediated by the envelope glycoprotein complex, GPC. The virion is endocytosed on binding to a cell-surface receptor, and membrane fusion is initiated in response to physiological acidification of the endosome. As with other class I virus fusion proteins, GPC-mediated membrane fusion is promoted through a regulated sequence of conformational changes leading to …

Humanistic Mathematics: An Oxymoron?, Gizem Karaali

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Mathematics faculty are trained as mathematicians, first and foremost. If we did not experience the soul-expanding possibilities of liberal education during our own undergraduate years, we may hesitate to bridge disciplinary divides when pursuing our core human need to inquire and understand. Although most mathematicians I know are amazing teachers, communicators, and mentors, many still teach the same material that their professors and their professors’ professors taught. This time-tested approach can be powerful, fascinating, and even quite entertaining. But it can also seem far removed from the world we inhabit. Yes, we teach “real world applications” of mathematical concepts. Yet …

Dealing With Overcrowding In Prisons: Contrasting Judicial Approaches From The Usa And Ireland., Mary Rogan

Articles

Two recent decisions, one given by the Supreme Court of the United States of America and one of the Irish High Court, address the consequences of overcrowding in prisons. In Brown, Governor of California et at v. Plata et al1 (hereinafter Plata) the US Supreme Court upheld a decision of a three judge federal court requiring the State of California to reduce its prison population to 137.5% of the prison system’s design capacity, requiring the release of up to 46,000 prisoners. The Court agreed that the overcrowding in the Californian prison system had caused the breach of prisoners’ rights under …

Improving Criminal Justice Data And Policy, Mary Rogan

Articles

Criminal justice policy in Ireland is often criticised for lacking a robust evidence base.

Increased knowledge about crime and criminal justice may act to enrich all types of criminological enquiry and policy formation. This paper explores the potential of large population registries, similar to those created in the health sector, to inform criminal justice policymaking. The paper looks at the importance of such data collection for criminal justice research and policy and the potential hurdles to its development.

Pcr Detection Of Malaria Parasites In Desiccated Anopheles Mosquitoes Is Uninhibited By Storage Time And Temperature, Mark A. Rider, Brian D. Byrd, Joseph Keating, Dawn M. Wesson, Kevin A. Caillouet

Biostatistics Publications

Background

Reliable methods to preserve mosquito vectors for malaria studies are necessary for detectingPlasmodium parasites. In field settings, however, maintaining a cold chain of storage from the time of collection until laboratory processing, or accessing other reliable means of sample preservation is often logistically impractical or cost prohibitive. As the Plasmodium infection rate of Anophelesmosquitoes is a central component of the entomological inoculation rate and other indicators of transmission intensity, storage conditions that affect pathogen detection may bias malaria surveillance indicators. This study investigated the effect of storage time and temperature on the ability to detect Plasmodium parasites …

Resch, Xavier Anglaret, Norman Daniels, Sue J. Goldie, Christine Daniel, Angela Y. Wong, Kenneth A. Freedberg, Milton C. Weinstein

Health Policy Publications

Background

In resource-limited settings, HIV budgets are flattening or decreasing. A policy of discontinuing antiretroviral therapy (ART) after HIV treatment failure was modeled to highlight trade-offs among competing policy goals of optimizing individual and population health outcomes.

Methods

In settings with two available ART regimens, we assessed two strategies: (1) continue ART after second-line failure (Status Quo) and (2) discontinue ART after second-line failure (Alternative). A computer model simulated outcomes for a single cohort of newly detected, HIV-infected individuals. Projections were fed into a population-level model allowing multiple cohorts to compete for ART with constraints on treatment capacity. In the …
