Anorexia Nervosa: Current Research From A Biological Perspective, Udy Tropp

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Eating disorders are viewed as serious mental illnesses, carrying significant, life-threatening medical and psychiatric implications, including morbidity and mortality. According to the Academy of Eating Disorders, anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. The American Psychiatric Association (2004) claims that approximately three percent of the United States female population has a clinically relevant eating disorder. Risk of premature death is 6-12 times higher in women with anorexia as compared to the general population, and it has become the third most common form of chronic illness among adolescent women aged 15 to 19 years. Although the prevalence …

One goal was to bring attention to primary reflex persistence interfering with typical movement development, leg length inequality (LLI) connected to primary reflex persistence, and the possible use of LLI assessment to be used as a screening tool for …

Connectionist-Based Rules Describing The Pass-Through Of Individual Goods Prices Into Trend Inflation In The United States, Richard G. Anderson, Jane M. Binner, Vincent A. Schmidt Jan 2012

Connectionist-Based Rules Describing The Pass-Through Of Individual Goods Prices Into Trend Inflation In The United States, Richard G. Anderson, Jane M. Binner, Vincent A. Schmidt

United States Air Force: Publications

This paper examines the inflation ‘‘pass-through’’ problem in American monetary policy, defined as the relationship between changes in the growth rates of individual goods and the subsequent economy-wide rate of growth of consumer prices. Initial relationships are established with Granger causality tests robust to structural breaks. A feed forward artificial neural network (ANN) is used to approximate the functional relationship between selected component subindexes and the headline CPI. Moving beyond the ANN ‘‘black box’’, we illustrate how decision rules can be extracted from the network.

Animal Research In Medical Sciences: Seeking A Convergence Of Science, Medicine, And Animal Law, John J. Pippin Jan 2012

Animal Research In Medical Sciences: Seeking A Convergence Of Science, Medicine, And Animal Law, John J. Pippin

Laws and Legislation Collection

As the intersection of animal law and animal research becomes congested, it is appropriate to establish the scientific context in which laws regarding the use and care of research animals will operate. There are at least three components of this context that set the terms of the debate: ethics, science, and the legal status of animals. The following discussion will not address ethics; not because it isn’t important, but because it exists along a spectrum of objective and subjective positions that are often unassailable by argument and data. I can assure you as a former animal researcher that even in …

Is Laughter The Best Medicine? An Evaluation Of The Physiological Effects Of Laughter, Annette Dalezman Jan 2012

Is Laughter The Best Medicine? An Evaluation Of The Physiological Effects Of Laughter, Annette Dalezman

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Laughter directly affects one’s physiology. Laughter causes various muscle contractions which, in turn, affect body systems. Specifically, the cardiovascular, immune, and respiratory systems are impacted by laughter. Stress levels and pain tolerance thresholds are also directly impacted by laughter. Research has been done on the effects of laughter in patients with cancer, dementia, and atopic dermatitis. Based on the review of multiple experiments, a direct correlation between laughter and multiple body systems and diseases seems to exist.

Structural And Functional Studies Of Slo K+ Channels: Mechanisms Of Gating By Intracellular Signaling, Manuel D. Leonetti Jan 2012

Structural And Functional Studies Of Slo K+ Channels: Mechanisms Of Gating By Intracellular Signaling, Manuel D. Leonetti

Student Theses and Dissertations

Eukaryotic K+ channels from the SLO family (SLO1, SLO2 and SLO3) provide a link between intracellular signaling and the electrical activity of a cell. The opening and closing (gating) of the three different SLO homologs is controlled by the synergistic action of membrane voltage and specific intracellular cues: Ca2+ binding in SLO1, Na+ binding in SLO2 and pH increase in SLO3. It is known that intracellular signals activate SLO channels by acting on the large cytoplasmic domains (CTDs) of these proteins, which follows the transmembrane ionconduction pore. However, a molecular description of the mechanisms of intracellular gating …

Panus giganteus, a culinary and medicinal mushroom consumed by selected indigenous communities in Malaysia, is currently being considered for large scale cultivation. This study was undertaken to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of P. giganteus against thioacetamide- (TAA-) induced liver injury in Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were injected intraperitoneally with TAA thrice weekly and were orally administered freeze-dried fruiting bodies of P. giganteus (0.5 or 1 g/kg) daily for two months, while control rats were given vehicle or P. giganteus only. After 60 days, rats administered with P. giganteus showed lower liver body weight ratio, restored levels of serum liver biomarkers …

Staphylococcus Aureus And Escherichia Coli Have Disparate Dependences On Ksga For Growth And Ribosome Biogenesis, Heather Colleen O'Farrell, Jason P. Rife Jan 2012

Staphylococcus Aureus And Escherichia Coli Have Disparate Dependences On Ksga For Growth And Ribosome Biogenesis, Heather Colleen O'Farrell, Jason P. Rife

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Background The KsgA methyltransferase has been conserved throughout evolution, methylating two adenosines in the small subunit rRNA in all three domains of life as well as in eukaryotic organelles that contain ribosomes. Understanding of KsgA’s important role in ribosome biogenesis has been recently expanded in Escherichia coli; these studies help explain why KsgA is so highly conserved and also suggest KsgA’s potential as an antimicrobial drug target.

Results We have analyzed KsgA’s contribution to ribosome biogenesis and cell growth in Staphylococcus aureus. We found that deletion of ksgA in S. aureus led to a cold-sensitive growth phenotype, although KsgA was …

Hormone Therapy For Postmenopausal Women: A Brief History Of Time, Cynthia A. Stuenkel Jan 2012

Hormone Therapy For Postmenopausal Women: A Brief History Of Time, Cynthia A. Stuenkel

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

All women who live long enough with ovaries intact will experience the menopause transition. This nearly universal, natural physiological event transcends mere biology, however. In our culture, the menopause also connotes a marker of aging. Margaret Meade considered menopause as the portal to a season of postmenopausal zest. Others, such as the infamous gynecologist Robert Wilson, approached menopause as an endocrine deficiency disorder with only negative sequelae in a woman's appearance, sexuality, and health. In an effort to relieve women's symptoms and to ward off the vagaries of aging, hormone therapy entered midstream medicine over fifty years ago. In an …

Effects Of Lycopene On Plasma Glucose, Insulin Levels, Oxidative Stress, And Body Weights Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats, Muhsi̇n Aydin, Sefa Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine possible therapeutic effects of oral lycopene supplementation on plasma insulin levels, lipid peroxidation, blood glucose levels, and the antioxidant defense system of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Materials and methods: Classical biochemical methods were used to determine plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH) levels. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine plasma insulin levels and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the levels of brain antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px). Results: It was found that the diabetes-related increase in blood glucose levels was reduced by supplementation …
