The Effect Of Music On Physiological Responses And Self-Perceived Mood, Robert-Christian Sanchez May 2012

The Effect Of Music On Physiological Responses And Self-Perceived Mood, Robert-Christian Sanchez

HIM 1990-2015

Music is often studied in terms of its artistic value and expressiveness. While these are important characteristics, there are other observations we can make of scientific value, such as the effects of music on the human anatomy. At present, however, there is a general lack of scientific studies focusing on the effect music makes on specific physiological responses in the body. A limited range of these studies has included examinations of music preferences and correlating personality characteristics of participants, while some others have investigated the effects of music lessons on intelligence. While the previously mentioned research has contributed to some …

Adding Cerebral Autoregulation To A Lumped Parameter Model Of Blood Flow, Russell Gentile May 2012

Adding Cerebral Autoregulation To A Lumped Parameter Model Of Blood Flow, Russell Gentile

HIM 1990-2015

A mathematical model of blood flow in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) was improved by adding cerebral autoregulation. This is the process by which blood vessels constrict or dilate to keep blood flow steady in certain organs during pressure changes. The original lumped parameter model transformed the fluid flow into an electrical circuit. Its behavior is described using a system of thirty-three coupled differential equations that are solved numerically using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method implemented in MATLAB. A literature review that includes a discussion of autoregulation mechanisms and approaches to modeling them is followed by a description of …

The Effects Of Physical Activity Education On Exercise Self-Efficacy And Physical Activity: A Comparison Study Between Exercise Science And Physical Education Teacher Education, Megan Wojcicki

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to understand the adjustment families undergo when a child is diagnosed with deafness as well as their adjustment to the child hearing after a cochlear implant is in place. The participants of the study were four hearing adults between the ages of 18-28 who have a younger sibling with a cochlear implant. The qualitative study used reports from four participants to reflect on how hearing loss and subsequent cochlear implantation impacted the family’s lives. Contrary to expecting findings, the themes did not change and all four reported nurturing and personal growth as key themes.

Characterization Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (Gper) In Breast Epithelial Proliferation And Morphogenesis, Allison Layne Scaling May 2012

Characterization Of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (Gper) In Breast Epithelial Proliferation And Morphogenesis, Allison Layne Scaling

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Estrogen (17β-estradiol, E2) plays an important role in regulating an array of functions in both male and female reproductive physiology. In the mammary gland, E2-induced proliferation, ductal outgrowth and subsequent branching morphogenesis is required for proper development of the breast. In males, E2 is required for proper testicular development, spermatogenesis, and sperm maturation in the epididymis, but can also negatively regulate these functions with inappropriate exposure. The effects of E2 in these organs have long been attributed to classical estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ), due to the observed effects in ER-/- mice; however, GPER is abundantly expressed in male and …

Biological Mechanisms And Clinical Implications Of Bcr-Abl-Induced Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress And Cell Survival In Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Hui Zhang May 2012

Biological Mechanisms And Clinical Implications Of Bcr-Abl-Induced Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress And Cell Survival In Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Hui Zhang

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a myeloproliferative disorder, represents approximately 15-20% of all adult leukemia. The development of CML is clearly linked to the constitutively active protein-tyrosine kinase BCR-ABL, which is encoded by BCR-ABL fusion gene as the result of chromosome 9/22 translocation (Philadelphia chromosome). Previous studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress-associated genetic, metabolic and biological alterations contribute to CML cell survival and drug refractory. Mitochondria and NAD(P)H oxidase (NOX) are the major sources of BCR-ABL-induced cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. However, it is still unknown how CML cells maintain the altered redox status, while escaping from the persistent oxidative …

The Relationship Of Outdoor Recreation And Gardening With Depression Among Individuals With Disabilities, Justin Floyd Wilson May 2012

The Relationship Of Outdoor Recreation And Gardening With Depression Among Individuals With Disabilities, Justin Floyd Wilson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Activities involving natural environments have positive psychological impacts on participants. Both outdoor recreation and gardening have been shown to reduce feelings of depression. However, the effects of these activities on the depression levels of individuals with disabilities have not yet been studied. In order to better understand the relationship between these activities and depression among individuals with disabilities, two separate studies were conducted.

The first study seeks to better understand the relationship between outdoor recreation participation and depression among Montana residents with disabilities using publicly available Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data. It hypothesizes that depression would be negatively …

New Antioxidant Prenylated Benzophenone Derivative From Native Louisiana Species Of Hypericum Hypericoides, Shreedu Pradhan

Academic Summit

Oxidation plays a critical role in cell senescence and the progression of disorders like cancer and cardiovascular disease. Antioxidants are known to modulate several of these disease pathways. In our survey of plants native to Louisiana, a new prenylated benzophenone derivative was isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the aerial parts of Hypericum hypericoides. Inspection of other plant parts yielded the known metabolites, 7-epiclusianone and clusianone. The structure and stereochemistry of the metabolites were determined by spectroscopic methods. The new derivative displayed antioxidant activity at a concentration of 1 mg/mL in the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide colorimetric assay.

Music, Mood, And Memory: An In-Depth Look At How Music Can Be Used As A Trigger To Elicit Specific Emotional Responses And Associated Memories, Jennifer Lynn Stubing Apr 2012

Music, Mood, And Memory: An In-Depth Look At How Music Can Be Used As A Trigger To Elicit Specific Emotional Responses And Associated Memories, Jennifer Lynn Stubing

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

No matter how humans have evolved over the years, no matter how different the cultures or customs are across seas, every race in the history of humankind has had music. Music and emotions have been intertwined throughout history. While short-term memories are fleeting, it is theorized that music has the potential to become a long-term memory after just one hearing (Eschrich 48).

Music, memories, and emotions have all been proven to intertwine, yet not much research has demonstrated the interrelation of all three. Musicology focuses on the connection between the human psyche and music. The most common use of music …

The Bloody Truth: Examining America's Blood Industry And Its Tort Liability Through The Arkansas Prison Plasma Scandal, Sophia Chase Apr 2012

The Bloody Truth: Examining America's Blood Industry And Its Tort Liability Through The Arkansas Prison Plasma Scandal, Sophia Chase

William & Mary Business Law Review

Most of the time, blood transfusions are safe. Over the years, however, tragedies connected to tainted blood and blood products have ripped through communities on an international scale. Blood contaminated with hepatitis C, HIV, and hepatitis B has sickened and killed recipients, causing financial, political, and legal repercussions for those found responsible.

This Note seeks to explore one such tragedy: the Arkansas Prison Plasma Scandal. Occurring between 1982 and 1994 at the Cummins Prison in Grady, Arkansas, the scandal stemmed from the operation of a blood product center in which prisoners “bled” in exchange for $7 to $10 per donation. …

Quality And Quantity Of Sleep Study And Its Relationship To The Performance Of Lpga Tour Players, Maria Elena Lopez Apr 2012

Quality And Quantity Of Sleep Study And Its Relationship To The Performance Of Lpga Tour Players, Maria Elena Lopez

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The relationship between sleep efficiency and elite level athletic performance that has a definitive and individual measure of performance (like golf, track, & swimming) has never been systematically studied. The extreme and rigorous travel schedules of professional golfers prevent consistent and necessary sleep schedules. The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) permitted Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) to ask for volunteers at two tournaments during October of 2010 to complete subjective sleep fatigue logs. Analysis of the sleep fatigue logs revealed a relationship between sleep quality and performance (golf score). Subsequent relationships were also found between subjective fatigue and sleep quality, and …

A Proposed Mediation Model Of The Effects Of Motivation For A Healthy Lifestyle: Impacts On Emotional Exhaustion, Medication Regimens, And Low-Density Lipoprotein, Nathan M. Leuthold

Theses and Dissertations

This research addressed the following question: "How are behavioral indicators related to physiological responses?" Three theories -- Conservation of Resources, Planned Behavior, and Achievement Motivation -- were employed to build a proposed model of the effects that an individual's motivation for a healthy lifestyle would have on his/her emotional exhaustion, daily medication usage, and low-density lipoproteins. Motivation for a healthy lifestyle was hypothesized to have a negative relationship with emotional exhaustion when using body mass index as a partial mediator. Emotional exhaustion was hypothesized to have positive relationships with daily medication usage and low-density lipoproteins. The model was tested using …

Biodegradation Of Organophosphate Chemical Warfare Agents By Activated Sludge, Steven J. Schuldt Mar 2012

Biodegradation Of Organophosphate Chemical Warfare Agents By Activated Sludge, Steven J. Schuldt

Theses and Dissertations

Organophosphates (OPs) have been widely used as Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs) as well as pesticides since World War II and still remain a threat to national security. While efforts have been taken at military installations and civilian communities to secure these chemicals and prevent their misuse, a determined adversary could still obtain and deploy them to injure, kill, or instill terror. The lethal properties of this group of compounds are primarily owed to their irreversible inhibition of the enzyme acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) and thus may alter the human nervous system or affect the hormonal balance of children in particular. In …

Theodor Billroth And His Musical Life., Patrick A. Hartendorp, B.S., Charles J. Yeo, Md, Pinckney J. Maxwell, Iv, Md

Department of Surgery Gibbon Society Historical Profiles

Although most widely recognized for the two types of gastric reconstructions that bear his name, Christian Albert Theodor Billroth was one of the most innovative surgeons of his time. His contributions included developing techniques for procedures on the larynx, breast, and esophagus. He pioneered sterility and antisepsis in operating rooms. He also improved surgical education by advocating for longer apprenticeships, which helped create a framework for today’s residency programs. However, what often goes unnoticed was Dr. Billroth’s love for music, a passion that fueled him throughout his life.

Animal Models For Human Disease – Reflections From An Animal Researcher’S Perspective, Imke Tammen

Between the Species

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) are a group of lethal inherited neurodegenerative disorders in humans and many animal species. Critical reflections on a range of ethical issues concerning NCL have been instigated by my research on sheep and cattle affected with NCL, the claim that these sheep and cattle are useful models for the disease in humans, and engagement with families and support groups. My reflections on moral status of animals and validity of animal models are outlined in this paper.

Gel electrophoresis and Western blot techniques were used to compare myosin heavy chain (MHC) protein expression with fiber type population …

Voicing And Devoicing Rules In East And Southeast Asian Languages, Siyu C. Zhang Jan 2012

Voicing And Devoicing Rules In East And Southeast Asian Languages, Siyu C. Zhang

Honors College Theses

Languages are composed of sounds that are produced by the vocal organs. These sounds can be split into two categories, voiceless and voiced. In general, based upon the International Phonetic Alphabet, there are more voiced sounds possible than voiceless sounds, with vowels, nasals, and approximants inherently voiced. After analyzing the separate phonetic inventories of 9 Asian languages representative of the major Asian language families (Arabic, Burmese, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, Tamil, Turkish, Vietnamese), it was found that all of them except Mandarin Chinese had far more voiced sounds than voiceless sounds as well. After isolating only stops and affricates, …
