Public And Private Worlds? Social History, Gender And Space, Fiona Williamson
Public And Private Worlds? Social History, Gender And Space, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Michael McKeon’s The Secret History of Domesticity is an important contribution to cultural and literary history, exploring how concepts of public and private evolved. His quest to uncover the ‘division of knowledge’ takes the reader on a journey through the low and high culture of literary genre, the history of print, art, architecture, entertainment, politics and social theory. This essay compares McKeon’s reading of public and private in light of the recent ‘spatial turn’ in social and gender history. The ‘spatial turn’ offers a close lens into the lived experience of past peoples in the same way that McKeon claims …

Decline And Fall? The Institutional History Of Post-Imperial Western Europe, Ad 400-800, Ryan David Mcdaniel
Decline And Fall? The Institutional History Of Post-Imperial Western Europe, Ad 400-800, Ryan David Mcdaniel
History ETDs
Over the course of the fifth to ninth centuries, the Roman Empire gave way in western Europe to several kingdoms initially founded by so-called 'barbarian' tribes. This thesis is a thematic assessment of the evolutionary trends that shaped this period. It respects and integrates the highly interconnected nature of these themes (politics and social structures, for instance). It is driven by a desire for synthesis, and in particular a desire to reconcile the economic arguments of Chris Wickham and Walter Goffart with the more political histories of Peter Heather and Guy Halsall. The institutions that define the early medieval era--localized, …

Immigration In France: How French Perception Affects Muslim Integration, Brittany P. Eisenhut
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
In this paper I examine the process of Muslim immigrants' integration, probing into the negative French perceptions of immigrants and how these perceptions may affect the process of integration and assimilation. I begin with a brief overview of French history as related to Muslim societies and how French culture and policies have evolved to their current state, such as the new strict policy on identity card renewal and the promise to integrate if accepted into the country. Next I deal strictly with immigration in France, including the policies and procedures of the French government and the perceptions of the French …

In 416, Bishop Innocent I of Rome sent a colleague in Gubbio what was to become one of the most important set of liturgical instructions in early Christendom. Innocent composed his remarks on, inter alia, penitential discipline and prescribed gestures during the administration of the Sacraments to deter other bishops and their priests from improvising. He claimed that bishops of Rome, as successors of St. Peter, had the responsibility to authenticate ritual observances and achieve uniformity in Italy and elsewhere. Churches could not be left to alter or surrender valued practices because presiding priests or bishops thought them superfluous or …

The Social Bioarchaeology Of Childhood As Applied To The Analysis Of An Excavated Mid- To Late-Nineteenth-Century Mennonite Cemetery, Berne, Indiana, Jennifer L. Hildebrand
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
This thesis provides a social-bioarchaeological analysis of the Old Mennonite Cemetery (1852-1896) in Berne, Indiana, with emphasis on treatment of child burials as a reflection of Mennonite identity and beliefs. Social bioarchaeology combines the methods of both social archaeology and bioarchaeology. When applied to the study of children in a mortuary context, social bioarchaeology allows determination of cultural age categories and a fuller understanding of childhood. In this study, various forms of historical documentation were utilized to provide a social context for analysis of the cemetery. These materials revealed a collective religious identity based on practices pertaining to children, most …

Wayfaring Strangers: A Case Study Of Rural Developmental Writers In The Missouri Ozarks, Robert Andrew Griffith
Wayfaring Strangers: A Case Study Of Rural Developmental Writers In The Missouri Ozarks, Robert Andrew Griffith
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes a year-long ethnographic study of rural basic writers in the Missouri Ozarks. Using Richard Hofstadter's concept of "anti-intellectualism" as a theoretical lens, I explored the attitudes of students towards writing and academic culture. This exploration was conducted by means of questionnaires, interviews, writing samples, and several experimental courses.
Using all these data-collection mechanisms, I was able to identify three characteristics of these students. They were likely to demonstrate a dualistic ("right/wrong") epistemology. Accordingly, they expected their academic reading to make matter-of-fact truth claims. Finally, students were unlikely to understand the transformative nature of any educational enterprise, hoping …

Social Justice, White Racial Identity, And Multicultural Competency Among White Master Level Trainees In Counselor Education And Counseling Psychology, Sara Rebecca Streufert
Dissertations
In recent years, scholars have become more vocal regarding counselors and counseling psychologists’ responsibilities to advance efforts for social change (Goodman et al., 2004; Speight & Vera, 2004; Vera & Speight, 2004). As a result, empirical investigations have started to evaluate variables that may contribute to trainees and mental health professionals’ desire to participate in social justice advocacy (Beer, 2008; Caldwell, 2008; Landreman et al., 2007; Nilsson & Schmidt, 2005). However, most of these studies do not focus on trainees and mental health professionals who identify as White. The present study used quantitative analyses to explore nine hypotheses regarding the …

Slaves In The Family: Testamentary Freedom And Interracial Deviance, Kevin Noble Maillard
Slaves In The Family: Testamentary Freedom And Interracial Deviance, Kevin Noble Maillard
College of Law - Faculty Scholarship
This Article addresses the deviance of interracial sexuality acknowledged in testamentary documents. The language of wills calls into question the authority of probate and family law by forcing issues of deviance into the public realm. Will dramas, settled in or out of court, publicly unearth insecurities about family. Many objections to the stated intent of the testator generate from social prejudices toward certain kinds of interpersonal relationships: nonmarital, homosexual, and/or interracial. When pitted against an issue of a moral or social transgression, testamentary intent often fails. In order for these attacks on testamentary validity to succeed, they must be situated …
Three Arguments Relating The Study Of Ci-Poetry, Zhongyi Xia
Three Arguments Relating The Study Of Ci-Poetry, Zhongyi Xia
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Chinese ci-poetry as a different poetic form from shi-poetry has its distinctive aesthetic characteristics and a unique pattern of stylistic innovation. A full understanding of this claim is essential to a historical analysis and evaluation of the theorectical commentaries on ci-poetry from the ancient famous scholars. The famous claim that ci-poetry is but shi-poetry set to music can be investigated from the perspective of "verifying the music from the lyrics," and its legitimacy lies on the one hand in the aesthetic sentiments and the life-disposition complexity in lyrics-music complex and on the other hand in various anthologies, commentaries, reading notes …

Acrylic based polyurethane coatings with nanoparticles embedded were prepared. The effects of nanoparticles of silica as fillers in the epoxy composite systems on tribological properties have been discussed in this article. The dispersed of nanosilica in polyurethane solution were prepared under magnetic stirring and various amounts of nanosilica powders were added so that the amount would turn out to be 3, 7 and 10% by weight respectively. The reference control was a pure polyurethane film with no nano silica content. The tribological tests were carried out by sliding against stainless steel in a pin on plate contact mode for friction …
