The Globalization Of Latter-Day Saint Education, Casey Paul Griffiths Jul 2012

The Globalization Of Latter-Day Saint Education, Casey Paul Griffiths

Theses and Dissertations

This work traces the development of the global educational system of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After a long period of providing schools for its membership in the Intermountain West of the United States, the Latter-day Saints ultimately settled on a system of supplementary religious education, designed to work in concert with public education systems. During the 1950s as the Church began to gain an international following, Church leaders moved to establish an international system of schools to meet their needs. These schools were largely supervised and directed by Americans personnel. Under the leadership of Church president …

Who Wrote Bacon? Assessing The Respective Roles Of Francis Bacon And His Secretaries In The Production Of His English Works, Noel B. Reynolds, G. Bruce Schaalje, John M. Hilton Jul 2012

Who Wrote Bacon? Assessing The Respective Roles Of Francis Bacon And His Secretaries In The Production Of His English Works, Noel B. Reynolds, G. Bruce Schaalje, John M. Hilton

Faculty Publications

In an earlier study that identified previously unrecognized writings of the young 15 Thomas Hobbes, questions were raised about the authorship of some of Francis Bacon’s published works. This article reports a follow-up study in which two independent statistical analyses of Bacon’s English works both conclude that, whereas Bacon’s autographic writings show clearly that they are authored by the same person; almost none of his published works can be matched statistically 20 with the autographs. The most likely explanation for this dramatic finding is that Bacon’s well-known reliance on secretaries may have been sufficiently extensive that his writing patterns are …

Cooking For The Patria: The Seccion Femenina And The Politics Of Food And Women During The Franco Years, Suzanne Dunai Jul 2012

Cooking For The Patria: The Seccion Femenina And The Politics Of Food And Women During The Franco Years, Suzanne Dunai

History ETDs

This study elucidates the importance of cooking manuals and recipe collections published by the Sección Femenina de la Falange (Womens Section of the Falange, 1934-1977) during the Franco Dictatorship (1939-1975) in Spain. The organization emphasized its dedication to pursuing women's interests to the political apparatus in its political rhetoric and experienced a substantial amount of autonomy from the Franco regime in communicating feminine ideals and social reform to the Spanish public. Recipes and cooking instruction provided the organization a unique way to access Spanish homes and reform the quotidian habits of Spanish women. The ideology of the Sección Femenina emphasized …

Representing Heritage And Loss On The Brittany Coast: Sites, Things And Absence, Maura Coughlin Jul 2012

Representing Heritage And Loss On The Brittany Coast: Sites, Things And Absence, Maura Coughlin

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

This is an essay about the interplay of objects, art and visual culture in several community museums and historical sites dedicated to local social history in coastal Brittany. There, in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Breton maritime culture invented a range of compensatory ritual objects, sites and practices to account for loss of life at sea. The presentation of this material culture of mourning in small museums, regional museums and ecomuseums on the Breton North Coast and the islands of Sein and Ouessant are examined in this essay. These material objects once bore material witness to crucial moments …

Between Theory And Reality: Cosmopolitanism Of Nodal Cities In Paweł Huelle’S Castorp, Ania Spyra Jul 2012

Between Theory And Reality: Cosmopolitanism Of Nodal Cities In Paweł Huelle’S Castorp, Ania Spyra

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

FIVE YEARS BEFORE the publication of his novel Castorp, the Gdansk writer Pawel Huelle published a short piece of the same title in the essay collection Inne historie (1999), the title of which-translated as either "other stories" or "other histories"-consciously plays with the difficulty of writing a history of Gdansk, a theme to which almost all of the short pieces in this collection somehow return. The essay tells the story of a literary correspondence between a Lvov pastor and the writer Thomas Mann, in which Mann voices regret over some unelaborated ideas and abandoned storylines in The Magic Mountain. …

A Comparative Analysis Of Islamic And Postmodernist Critiques Of Science, M. Hasbullah Jul 2012

A Comparative Analysis Of Islamic And Postmodernist Critiques Of Science, M. Hasbullah

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this study, we attempt to look at the Western and Islamic critiques of science in the context of modernity. Science is one of the main drivers of modernity, and therefore, reaction to modernity is often discussed in response to modern science and Islamic science discourse. The issue of modernity covers the wider issues across various disciplines such as philosophy, history and sociology. Among the characteristics associated with modernity that have been debated by Western and Islamic scholars such as rationality, objectivity, empiricism, scientific method, the concept of progress, and secularism, and the critique of science by the Western and …

Vertical And Horizontal Perspectives On Rights Consciousness, David M. Engel Jul 2012

Vertical And Horizontal Perspectives On Rights Consciousness, David M. Engel

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

It has become commonplace to assert that rights consciousness is expanding globally and that individuals worldwide are demonstrating an increasing awareness of and insistence upon their legal entitlements. To marshal empirical support for such claims is, however, exceedingly complex. One important line of socio-legal research on rights consciousness adopts what might be called a "vertical" perspective, tracing the flow of legal forms and practices from prestigious and authoritative centers of cultural production to local settings, where they may be adopted, resisted, or transformed. Vertical perspectives on global rights consciousness have broadened and enriched the field of law and society by …

Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel Jul 2012

Entanglement: Health, Healing And Society In Africa, Haley Noel

Anthós

As a continent, Africa has been explored, exploited, and largely abandoned by the West. During the colonial era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, foreign powers encountered diverse cultures, superstitions and disease before promptly labeling the entire continent a dangerous and primitive place. For early explorers and colonialists, disease and the threat of ill health is what defined Africa. They overlooked the pre-existing strategies and practices that Africans had adapted to guard against certain diseases, either ignoring them or labeling the misunderstood safety nets as primitive. Also overlooked was the importance of societal organization and communal cooperation among …

Assessment And Design Of Disposable Medical And Adaptive Apparel, Ling Chang Fu, I Lai Ching, Sheng Guan Shing

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This study discussed the design of functional clothing for patients who suffer from spinal cord injury-induced lower-limb disabilities caused by car accidents or illness. Recycled fibers were used as the basic material, and digital printing technology used to create different color combinations. Ready-made clothes in Taiwan are not suitable for with physical disable patients or those with urine drainage bags. The fabric is not antibacterial, and the designs are dull. The study surveyed physicians and patients in order to gain an indepth understanding of patients’ actual needs. This study included four parts: 1) questionnaire survey and interviews with four physical …

When Was Judicial Self-Restraint, Aziz Huq Jul 2012

When Was Judicial Self-Restraint, Aziz Huq

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This Essay responds to Judge Posner’s Jorde Symposium Essay The Rise and Fall of Judicial Restraint by analyzing the question of when, if ever, has judicial self-restraint thrived in the federal courts. Its central aim is to shed historicizing light on the trajectory of judicial activism by imaginatively rifling through an array of canonical and somewhat-less-than-canonical empirical identification strategies. Two conclusions follow from the inquiry. First, I find that the available data on the historical trajectory of judicial restraint are surprisingly poor, and it is necessary to offer any judgment about the historical path of judicial activism with great caution. …

Design Case Studies: Never Let The Facts Get In The Way Of A Good Story!, Seymour Roworth-Stokes Jul 2012

Design Case Studies: Never Let The Facts Get In The Way Of A Good Story!, Seymour Roworth-Stokes

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper argues that the primary advantage of the case study, its ability to reveal insight into ‘real-life’ contemporary phenomena (the here and now) set against critical incidents, happenings or events over time (cause and effect), could be undermined by a lack of methodological rigor and sound empiricism in design research. Often the ‘one off’ is reported as a ‘case’ without the critical insight or analytical discourse necessary to derive sound theory from practice. A systematic audit of design case studies in four of the leading design research journals has been undertaken along with a detailed analysis of the type, …

Beyond Post-Modernity In Mathematics Education, Ole Skovsmose Jul 2012

Beyond Post-Modernity In Mathematics Education, Ole Skovsmose

The Mathematics Enthusiast

A radical form of postmodernity is presented with reference to Nietzsche’s ideas with respect to truth, knowledge, sciences, progress, democracy, and ethical values in general. Thereafter is presented Foucault’s archaeology of knowledge. This brings us forward to the notion of genealogy, which is a defining idea for the postmodern conception of critique. However, it is emphasised that a critique can address the generativity of mathematical rationality by considering mathematics-based fabrications. Finally, imagination is presented as yet another feature of a critical enterprise. It is illustrated how such a three dimensional critical enterprise is relevant for both mathematics and mathematics education. …
