Ecosystems Under Sail: Specimen Transport In The Eighteenth-Century French And British Atlantics, Christopher M. Parsons, Kate S. Murphy Oct 2012

Ecosystems Under Sail: Specimen Transport In The Eighteenth-Century French And British Atlantics, Christopher M. Parsons, Kate S. Murphy

History

The ocean was frequently as hostile an environment for plants and animals as it was for humankind in the eighteenth century. Existing methods of preserving the plants, fish, birds, and land animals that provided the raw materials for European science increasingly proved insufficient for the often long voyages that brought them from colonial and indigenous collectors; specimens arrived dead when they were needed alive, rotten and damaged when they were needed whole, and they frequently suffered as they encountered negligent and uninterested sailors, and rats and other shipboard pests that showed too much interest. This paper examines strategies of specimen …

Japan-China Relations 2005–2010: Managing Between A Rock And A Hard Place An Interpretative Essay, James J. Przystup

INSS Strategic Perspectives

Between China and Japan, the past is ever-present. Notwithstanding shared cultural and historic ties, throughout the past century and going back to the Sino-Japanese war at the end of the 19th century, a bitter legacy of history—the Boxer Rebellion; the Mukden Incident and Japan’s occupation of South Manchuria (1931); the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, Japan’s subsequent invasion of China, and the Nanjing Massacre (1937); and the Sino-Japanese War (1937– 1945)—has left an indelible mark on this relationship.

Leaving In The Past: The Role History Plays In Video Games, Joseph Fordham Oct 2012

Leaving In The Past: The Role History Plays In Video Games, Joseph Fordham

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

How can something considered by many within academia as childish or a waste of time be potentially useful in presenting or even studying history? Not only has the video game industry grown into one of the largest forms of media in the world, but these games are also finding use as a training aid for the military and major companies, as an advertising medium, and, most importantly, as a tool for teaching. As developmental capabilities improve with new generations of graphics hardware, video games are turning towards the recreation of real-world and historical events. This drive towards realism and accuracy …

The Tarot Of Jane Austen: Re-Envisioning The World, Emily Auger Oct 2012

The Tarot Of Jane Austen: Re-Envisioning The World, Emily Auger

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In pre-1970 Tarot gaming decks, trump card XXI typically shows either a cityscape or a semi-nude female dancer inside a wreath surrounded by symbols of the Christian evangelists. More recent Tarot decks, virtually all of which are used for fortune-telling, occult, or personal development exercises, propose many unique variations of this card: card XXI of The Tarot of Jane Austen shows a wedding. This paper considers the significance of the application of this motif, ubiquitous in popular film and literary genres, to Tarot card XXI relative to its conventional iconography and interpretation as established during and after the fifteenth century.

Sacrament And Eschatological Fulfillment In Henri De Lubac's Theology Of History, Joseph Flipper Oct 2012

Sacrament And Eschatological Fulfillment In Henri De Lubac's Theology Of History, Joseph Flipper

Dissertations (1934 -)

Henri de Lubac, S.J. (1896-1991) led one of the most important developments within twentieth-century Catholic theology, the movement known as the nouvelle théologie. De Lubac's signature move was to return to early church sources to renew contemporary theology. This dissertation explores de Lubac's recovery of patristic eschatology for the contemporary age. While certainly responding to secularization, de Lubac also sought to respond to the "messianic" and apocalyptic shape of modern religious experience and political ideology. He argued that the source of secular messianisms was a dictotomy within Christianity between mysticism and the apocalyptic. The nouvelle théologie movement of the 1940s--from …

Individualism In Education Reform, Collin Scott Bertram Sep 2012

Individualism In Education Reform, Collin Scott Bertram

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Current education reform in the U.S. is based upon a business model with capitalist market principles. High stakes standardized testing is a tool that the business model reformers use to dismantle democracy while creating an environment where a democratic society will not thrive. One of the reasons that business-minded reformers are so successful in promoting their agenda is that our society is highly individualistic. The individualistic nature of society in the U.S. provides fertile ground for reform that not only harms our present vestiges of democracy but also endangers the possibility of a democratic society for future generations. A critical …

Application Of Seawinds Scatterometer Data To The Study Of Antarctic Icebergs, Keith Mitchell Stuart Sep 2012

Application Of Seawinds Scatterometer Data To The Study Of Antarctic Icebergs, Keith Mitchell Stuart

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of iceberg location and size is important for safety reasons as well as for understanding many geophysical and biological processes. This dissertation analyzes large tabular icebergs in the Southern Ocean using the SeaWinds scatterometer. SeaWinds is a spaceborne radar designed to measure the microwave backscatter from the Earth's surface. Using resolution-enhancement techniques, backscatter measurements are processed into backscatter images in which icebergs can be observed. An iceberg detection methodology is formalized using daily scatterometer images. Radar profiles from common Antarctic scatterers are quantified and an iceberg detection methodology is formalized using daily scatterometer images. Iceberg positions are determined in …

La Traduction Littéraire En France, 1840-1915 : Un Projet D'Histoire Quantitative, Transnationale Et Cartographique, Blaise Wilfert-Portal, Claire Guérin

Artl@s Bulletin

This article presents a current research pro-ject, included in the Transnat program (IHMC, Saarbrücken Univ.), supported by the ANR and DFG. This historical study of the transla-tion of literature into French adopts quantita-tive as well as editorial historical perspectives. In this article, we endeavor to demonstrate through the initial results how, for instance, the articulation of quantitative and spatial history of arts and literature may question the traditional thesis of cultural studies on transla-tion: that this hybridizing operation is a phe-nomenon of fringes, borders and peripheries.

Between The Mob And The Noose: The Lynching Intercessor In American Literature And Film, Abigail Thibault Horne Sep 2012

Between The Mob And The Noose: The Lynching Intercessor In American Literature And Film, Abigail Thibault Horne

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In my dissertation, I note the frequent, post-Civil War presence of an individual character that opposes a lynch mob by interceding on behalf of the intended lynching victim. I argue that this figure, which I term the lynching intercessor, is a trope for racial reconciliation in American literature and film. The intercessor works to mediate between loyalty to an ideal democracy and recognition of a past and present that is inextricable from violent, racist oppression. While the lynching intercessor often negotiates the prevention of violence, the intercessor also re-imbues the professional, white: and, usually, male) individual as the rightful embodiment …

The Kanga, A Cloth That Reveals- Co-Production Of Culture In Africa And The Indian Ocean Region, Phyllis A. Ressler Sep 2012

The Kanga, A Cloth That Reveals- Co-Production Of Culture In Africa And The Indian Ocean Region, Phyllis A. Ressler

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Kanga is one of Africa's least understood textiles. As a simple cotton, colorful, hand and machine printed cloth it embodies dynamic historical co-production of culture throughout African and Indian Ocean trade networks. Exploring African mercantile trade history, the coproduction and exchange of iconography, the diverse use and meanings of the Kanga, suggests a valuable discursive role for this textile. Despite its longevity of more than 150 years, its significant role in creation of identities, and its contribution to communication through design and social meaning, the Kanga, receives limited attention in textile research. Though seen by many as a simple …

The Mizo are a large sub-group of the Chin (also known as the Zo, Lai or Kuki), a loosely related group of two million people living in the hills of western Myanmar (Burma), northeastern India, and southeastern Bangladesh. The Mizo strive to attain merit through success in hunting, war, accumulation of wealth, and communal feast giving involving a series of five separate feasts. A Mizo man who has either hosted two complete series of five communal feasts or killed an entire series of wild animals attains the greatest merit and is known as Thangchhuahpa. Such men were held in high …

The Many Shades Of Cochineal Red Workshop Review And Recap, Tal Landeau Sep 2012

The Many Shades Of Cochineal Red Workshop Review And Recap, Tal Landeau

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Michel Garcia’s workshop The Many Shades of Cochineal Red at the in Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, Virginia, was packed with multiple steaming pots, a couple of blown fuses and multiple vibrant hues of red, purples and oranges. Garcia demonstrated how the selection of mordanting processes used in conjunction with cochineal dye resulted in different nuances of the color red in the final dyed cloth and yarn. As a bonus and demonstration of other reds from natural dyes, Garcia also used madder to dye more fiber.

The three mordanting methods outlined by Garcia were what he called the classical method, …

The Lds Church In Italy: The 1966 Rededication By Elder Ezra Taft Benson, James A. Toronto, Richard N. Holzapfel

BYU Studies

Since the early years of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Italy has attracted the attention of Church leaders as a proselyting field. It is the practice of Church leaders to dedicate a land to the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and this article briefly describes the 1850 dedication of Italy by Apostle Lorenzo Snow, followed by a report of a second dedication in 1966 by another Apostle, Ezra Taft Benson. Elder Benson, as president of the European Mission, was warmly welcomed in Italy because of his prior work as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, when he …

The Politics Of Textiles Used In African American Slave Clothing, Eulanda A. Sanders Sep 2012

The Politics Of Textiles Used In African American Slave Clothing, Eulanda A. Sanders

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Onasburg, homespun, and linsey-woolsey (Warner & Parker, 1990), broadcloth and Negro cloth (Hunt & Sibley, 1994; Warner & Parker, 1990; Williams & Centrallo, 1990) and kersey (Hunt, 1996) are typical textiles used to create the clothing worn by slaves and are often described in narratives written by African American slaves. The stories of African American slaves are a wealth of information on the lives of all individuals living in chattel environments, but particularly slaves who were usually not photographed. Since textiles are used to create inherently personal items, they are often described in narratives to help the reader's understand the …

Sixteen Strong Identifications Of Biblical Persons (Plus Nine Other Ids) In Authentic Northwest Semitic Inscriptions From Before 539 B.C.E., Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Research Publications

This revised conference paper presents the strongest results of the author's published dissertation as corrected and updated in a journal article published in 2010 and as updated using a 2011 essay. In Northwest Semitic inscriptions which are known to be authentic, using sound protocols, one can identify with certainty at least ten persons from before the Persian era who are mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Another six such persons can be identified with virtual certainty, for a total of sixteen strong identifications (IDs).

Five other authentic inscriptions offer an additional seven IDs which, while not quite certain, are at least …
