Status and Trends for Virginia Chesapeake Bay
The period prior to the implementation of the Chesapeake Bay Monitoring Program was characterized by a marked decline in the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. The disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation in certain regions of the Bay, declines in the abundance of some commercially and recreationally important species, increases in the incidence of low dissolved oxygen events, changes in the Bay's food web, and other ecological problems have been related to the deteriorating water quality (e.g. USEPA, 1982,1983;Officer et al.,1984; Orth and Moore, 1984). The results of concentrated research efforts in the late 1970s and early 1980s stimulated the …

Impacts Of Climate Change On The Surface Water Balance Of The Central United States, 1984–2007, Bo Dong
Impacts Of Climate Change On The Surface Water Balance Of The Central United States, 1984–2007, Bo Dong
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The climate system and the hydrologic cycle are strongly connected with each other. Understanding the interactions between these two systems is important, since variations in climate can trigger extensive changes in the hydrologic cycle, with significant impacts on agriculture, ecosystems, and society. Observations over the central U.S. in recent decades show numerous changes in climatic variables. This includes decreases in cloud cover and wind speed, increases in air temperature, and seasonal shifts in precipitation rate and rain/snow fraction. To assess the impacts of these variations in climate on the regional water cycle, a terrestrial ecosystem/land surface hydrologic model (Agro-IBIS) is …
Branding Lazos De Amor: Importance And Challenges Of Branding Small Non-Profits, The Journey Towards A Better Brand., Sugey Terrero
Branding Lazos De Amor: Importance And Challenges Of Branding Small Non-Profits, The Journey Towards A Better Brand., Sugey Terrero
Capstone Collection
Branding is an integral journey that precedes, includes and surpasses any marketing and advertising effort; it entails an internal process of self-discovery, combined with the exportation (marketing) of organizational values through visual and tangible means (advertising). This capstone focused on the following questions: why is branding important for non-profits? What factors contribute to non-profits not focusing on branding? In addition, what strategies can small non-profits use to develop and manage their brand more effectively? The first question was explored through literature, while the second was explored both theoretically and empirically beginning with an analysis of why branding is a challenging …

The new definition of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is expected to appear in May 2013 in the finalized Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM) -5 (American Psychiatric Association, 2012). The current DSM-IV criteria uses Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) as the umbrella term for autism, a classification that many professionals believe has been outdated for several years. ASD will be the new name for the category that includes “autistic disorder (autism), Asperger’s disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified” (APA, 2012). It will also serve to better differentiate autism spectrum disorder from typical development as well as from similar …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This issue is a wonderful compilation of truly excellent essays. I can assure readers that I have read and appreciated them. Indeed, several of them came through my inbox during various stages of preparation and it is encouraging to see such a healthy roster of scholarly contributions. I wish I were able to do them justice. Please read them. Enjoy them. The work alone should give us hope. People are thinking critically and responding creatively. This in and of itself is a good thing. What follows, then, is a call for more good things. It is part response, part self-directed …

Reverse Sexology: Turn-Of-The-Century Discourses Of Sexuality And The Limits Of Identity In David Leavitt’S The Indian Clerk, Helena Gurfinkel
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
David Leavitt’s most recent novel, The Indian Clerk (2007) runs afoul of the standard position in relation to the politics of sexual identity among modern Anglo-American writers. While working in the same tradition as Christopher Isherwood or Edmund White, for whom being a gay writer is a politically necessary self-identification, Leavitt, in his latest work of fiction, fights against such a designation. The Indian Clerk explores the potential limitations of sexual identity, which originated in the medical and scientific discourses of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. [1] According to Chris White, these discourses “produce[d] science as the means of truly …
Confronting The Crisis In Scientific Publishing: Latency, Licensing And Access, Jorge L. Contreras
Confronting The Crisis In Scientific Publishing: Latency, Licensing And Access, Jorge L. Contreras
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
The serials crisis in scientific publishing can be traced to the long duration of copyright protection and the assignment of copyright by researchers to publishers. Over-protection of scientific literature has enabled commercial publishers to increase subscription rates to a point at which access to scientific information has been curtailed with negative social welfare consequences. The uniformity costs imposed by such over-protection can be addressed by tailoring intellectual property rights, either through legal change or private ordering.
Current open access channels of distribution offer alternative approaches to scientific publishing, but neither the Green OA self-archiving nor the Gold OA author-pays models …

Cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors Indomethacin and its structural analogs Sulindac exhibit cell growth inhibition and apoptosis inducing activities in various cancer cell lines via COX independent mechanisms. In this study, the molecular structures of Indomethacin and Sulindac were used as starting scaffolds to design novel analogs and their effects on the proliferation of human cancer cells were evaluated. Compared to Indomethacin and Sulindac inhibiting cancer cell proliferation with IC50s of more than 1 mM, the derivatives displayed significantly increased activities. Especially, one of the Indomethacin analogs inhibited the growth of a series of cancer cell lines with IC50s around 0.5 μM–3 …

A mouse model with compromised mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis has been engineered in order to assess the role of this pathway in mitochondrial function and overall health. Reduction in the expression of mitochondrial malonyl CoA-acyl carrier protein transacylase, a key enzyme in the pathway encoded by the nuclear Mcat gene, was achieved to varying extents in all examined tissues employing tamoxifen-inducible Cre-lox technology. Although affected mice consumed more food than control animals, they failed to gain weight, were less physically active, suffered from loss of white adipose tissue, reduced muscle strength, kyphosis, alopecia, hypothermia and shortened lifespan. The Mcat-deficient phenotype …

Body Mass Index And The Risk Of Prostate Cancer, Daniel Lee Mcgee, Carlos J. Crespo
Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: This article presents cohort studies that use data from the National Health Information Survey from 1986 to 1994 and compares the effectiveness of Cox proportional hazards models that assume a linear relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the risk of prostate cancer with models that assume a J-shaped relationship. Methods and results: Our study found that for black males over 40 years of age, neither a linear nor a J-shaped relationship yielded a statistically significant model. With white males over 40 years, assuming a linear relationship did not yield a statistically significant model (P = 0.582). When we …

Discrete Arginine Topologies Guide Escape Of Miniature Proteins From Early Endosomes To The Cytoplasm, Jacob S. Appelbaum
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Polypeptides and peptide mimetics sample a wide chemical space with broad potential to modulate cellular function, but their application to cytoplasmic targets is limited because when added to cells their cytosolic concentration remains low. This limitation is due to a diffusion barrier (the plasma membrane) and absence of dedicated import machinery. Highly cationic peptides and proteins sometimes gain cytosolic access, but how they do so is not well understood. Using a small library of cationic miniature proteins, I probe the influence of positive charge number and orientation on the ability the miniature protein to access the cytoplasm. Using a novel …
