Family Aided Community Treatment As An Intervention For The Treatment Of Early Psychosis: A Proof Of Concept Study, Ryan P. Melton

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Major psychotic disorders are one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, having severe impacts on the people who suffer from the conditions, their families and society. There is evidence that if these conditions are identified and treated early, the prognosis is improved. The purpose of this study is to produce findings related to the use of year long trial of family aided community treatment (FACT) with individuals who are experiencing a first episode psychosis as defined by the SIPS. Using a proof of concept design with multiple repeated measure t tests, this study focused on first-episode psychotic disorder participants …

Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres Oct 2012

Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

How to balance land uses to sustainably feed, clothe, and power a burgeoning population aspiring to western lifestyles will be a profound, if not the most profound, challenge to policymakers in the 21st century.  And, climate change’s unpredictable effects on natural systems will exacerbate already complex, uncertain, and contentious land use decision-making.  While biomass-based energy policies gained momentum throughout the 2000s as one way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, assumptions about biofuels’ environmental and societal benefits are beginning to come under closer scrutiny.  In response, public laws have incorporated varying forms of sustainability considerations.  Many private standards have emerged, however, …

Drug–Drug Conditioning Between Citalopram And Haloperidol Or Olanzapine In A Conditioned Avoidance Response Model: Implications For Polypharmacy In Schizophrenia, Nathan L. Sparkman, Ming Li Oct 2012

Drug–Drug Conditioning Between Citalopram And Haloperidol Or Olanzapine In A Conditioned Avoidance Response Model: Implications For Polypharmacy In Schizophrenia, Nathan L. Sparkman, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Patients with schizophrenia often have anxiety and depression, and thus are treated with multiple psychotherapeutic medications. This practice of polypharmacy increases the possibility for drug–drug interactions. However, the pharmacological and behavioral mechanisms underlying drug–drug interactions in schizophrenia remain poorly understood. In the present study, we adopted a preclinical approach and examined a less known behavioral mechanism, drug–drug conditioning (DDC) between haloperidol (a typical antipsychotic) or olanzapine (atypical antipsychotic) and citalopram (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). A rat two-way conditioned avoidance response paradigm was used to measure antipsychotic activity and determine how DDC may alter the antipsychotic efficacy in this model. …

Correlates Of Same-Sex Attractions And Behaviors Among Self-Identified Heterosexual University Students, Luis F. Morales Knight, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Few studies have focused on intragroup variations in sexual orientation and fewer on self-identified heterosexuals with same-sex attractions, fantasies, and/or behaviors. Self-identified heterosexual students at a large public midwestern university (N = 263) completed measures of sexuality and gender, attitudes toward lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people, religious and political beliefs, emotional well-being, and demographics. The sample included 82 individuals (31%; labeled “H+”) who endorsed same-sex attraction, fantasy, and/or behavior and 181 (69%; labeled “H”) who did not. Women were more likely to be categorized as H+ than men. H+ participants had more positive attitudes toward lesbians and gay …

Changing Role Of Senior Administrators, Kathleen Delong, Julie A. Garrison, Marianne Ryan

Books and Contributions to Books

In alignment with ARL’s strategic focus Transforming Research Libraries, designed to articulate, promote, and facilitate new and expanding roles for ARL libraries that enable and enrich the transformations affecting research and research-intensive education, this study has probed the nature of administrative positions that support accomplishing these objectives. The ongoing evolution within these organizations and the roles of those who work in them is mirrored in the administrative structure of the academic library. Two decades ago, it was largely the library director who managed the organization, perhaps with assistance from an associate in public and technical services, or from a single …

Developing Health Information Literacy: A Needs Analysis From The Perspective Of Preprofessional Health Students, Lana V. Ivanitskaya, Kaitlyn A. Hanisko, Julie A. Garrison, Samantha J. Janson, Danielle Vibbert

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Objective: The research identified the skills, if any, that health preprofessional students wished to develop after receiving feedback on skill gaps as well as any strategies they intended to use to address these gaps.

Methods: A qualitative approach was used to elicit students' reflections on building health information literacy skills. First, the students took the Research Readiness Self-Assessment instrument, which measured their health information literacy, and then they received individually tailored feedback about their scores and skill gaps. Second, students completed a post-assessment survey asking how they intended to close identified gaps in their skills on these. Three trained coders …

Articles

The transition period between care settings is the most vulnerable time for patients and their caregivers. The unique vulnerabilities for patients with mental illnesses such as depression, mania, anxiety, schizophrenia and/or substance use disorders* heighten the need for coordinated transitions and aftercare. In 2010, depression was the fourth diagnosis by volume for readmissions in Minnesota according to the Potentially Preventable Readmissions data collected by the Minnesota Hospital Association.

The City Upon A Hill: Boston As God’S Bulwark Against Piracy, 1630-1720, Kimberly Lorton

Student Honors Theses

As the Reverend Cotton Mather sat face to face with William Fly in 1726, a sailor brought into Boston harbor on charges of high piracy, he contemplated not how Fly’s crimes were a detriment to the commercial activity of New England but only how to save the man’s soul from the fires of hell. To do this he would preach to Fly for two weeks; essentially begging him to seek redemption through God. Much to the esteemed Reverend’s surprise, however, Fly would have none of it. The fear of death and eternal damnation would not move the man to confess …

Flexible Training Program Builds Capacity For Diverse Challenges, Martha C. Monroe, Lauren Mcdonell Oct 2012

Flexible Training Program Builds Capacity For Diverse Challenges, Martha C. Monroe, Lauren Mcdonell

Journal of Extension

Flexible training programs help participants build skills to solve problems in a variety of contexts. Programs that enable trainers to adapt materials create an additional type of useful flexibility. This case study explores how a program was designed to help natural resource managers address challenges and conflicts across the southeastern United States. Changing Roles: Wildland-Urban Interface Professional Development Program gives trainers maximum flexibility in creating a locally relevant program and also engages participants in addressing important challenges. The evaluation suggests this design was successful and is helping participants overcome the helplessness that comes with not knowing how to solve problems.

Planting The Legal Seed: The Benefit Of Agricultural Law Education For Extension Professionals, Ryan Conklin, Michael Olexa Oct 2012

Planting The Legal Seed: The Benefit Of Agricultural Law Education For Extension Professionals, Ryan Conklin, Michael Olexa

Journal of Extension

Agriculture is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the United States. Government oversight, increased litigation, legal and policy issues that demand careful analysis, and a multitude of legal complexities have created a need for Extension professionals to better understand this complicated regulatory environment. To address this need, the University of Florida has implemented two curriculum adjustments in the last decade. Past studies discussing legal education and Extension have been included along with potential recommendations for the Cooperative Extension Service.

Evaluation Of A Cooperative Extension Service Curriculum On Empowering Older Adults With Assistive Technology To Grocery Shop, Prepare Food, And Eat, Janice R. Hermann, Jan. H. Johnston, Whitney A. Brosi, Linda Jaco

Journal of Extension

The Empowering Older Adults with Assistive Technology to Shop, Cook and Eat curriculum was designed to provide education about concepts of empowerment and assistive technology for grocery shopping, preparing food, and eating. The curriculum included examples and hands-on demonstrations of assistive technology devices for grocery shopping, food preparation, and eating. Results of post-then-pre evaluation with 100 participants revealed significant increases in awareness and comfort using assistive technology devices. Evaluation indicated education and hands-on demonstrations increased awareness of the importance of older adult nutrition and older adult empowerment through use of assistive technologies designed to facilitate independent living.

Natural Resource Service Learning To Link Students, Communities, And The Land, Rebecca J. Barlow Oct 2012

Natural Resource Service Learning To Link Students, Communities, And The Land, Rebecca J. Barlow

Journal of Extension

University-based Extension specialists often face the dilemma of scheduling time for both teaching and outreach activities. Service learning projects that give hands-on experience in the application of classroom activities while giving back to the community can bridge this gap. A demonstration forest and service learning techniques were used to help 30 undergraduate forestry students lead a forestry field day for 100 elementary school students. Upon completion of the project, undergraduate students were more confident in their forestry knowledge and played an important role in the success of a natural resources Extension demonstration and outreach project.

Family Resource Management Needs Assessment In New Mexico, Fahzy Abdul-Rahman

Journal of Extension

New Extension state specialists face many uncertainties when beginning to work in their new position, especially when it involves a state unfamiliar to them. Literature reviews may not provide the latest and clearest picture of the needs and challenges in the state. Furthermore, the between-county variation of issues may differ greatly. The study reported here illustrates how a survey of Home Economics county agents may benefit a new Extension specialist and provide a picture of Extension Home Economics needs and challenges specific to New Mexico.

Women Farmers: Pulling Up Their Own Educational Boot Straps With Extension, Nancy Ellen Kiernan, Mary Barbercheck, Kathryn J. Brasier, Carolyn Sachs, Anna Terman

Journal of Extension

Women comprise a rapidly growing segment in agriculture. In this article, we examine how a network of women farmers, Extension educators, and researchers responded to the significant increase in women farmers in one state by creating a membership organization that draws on the expertise and resources of the land-grant university and Extension in Pennsylvania to create educational events with networking opportunities. We report 4 years of evaluation data for 37 events indicating educational impact, expansion and enhancement of the network, and marketing strategies for Extension to improve participation of women.

SSES usage increased after it was revised to incorporate interactivity and more consumer-friendly design elements.

Ethical Advocacy For Immigrant Survivors Of Family Crisis, Theo Liebmann Oct 2012

Ethical Advocacy For Immigrant Survivors Of Family Crisis, Theo Liebmann

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The involvement of family courts in the lives of youth and families creates significant opportunities for advocates to assist their clients with immigration-related issues. Informed and effective advocacy on these issues in family court can make lifechanging, and even life-saving, differences for immigrants. More specifically, immigration issues are germane to family court because certain vital avenues of immigration relief available to survivors of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and other forms of family crisis explicitly depend on findings, orders, and certifications that are issued in the context of family court proceedings. After describing these forms of relief, and the family court’s role …

Students As Donors To University Archives: A Study Of Student Perceptions With Recommendations, Jessica Wagner, Debbi A. Smith

Publications and Research

Most of the literature that explores the relationship between students and university archives focuses on how to integrate archival materials into the undergraduate curriculum. Little exists that analyzes student perceptions of the types of materials that are found in archives; even less discusses how to induce students to donate materials that document life on campus. This case study examines student perceptions of various aspects of university archives, with the goal of developing better methods of reaching out to encourage donation of student life materials.

It Takes A Village: Municipal Condemnation Proceedings And Public/Private Partnerships For Mortgage Loan Modification, Value Preservation, And Local Economic Recovery, Robert C. Hockett Oct 2012

It Takes A Village: Municipal Condemnation Proceedings And Public/Private Partnerships For Mortgage Loan Modification, Value Preservation, And Local Economic Recovery, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Respected real estate analysts forecast that the U.S. is now poised to experience a renewed round of home mortgage foreclosures over the coming six years. Up to eleven million underwater mortgages will be affected. Neither our families, our neighborhoods, nor our state and national economies can bear a resumption of crisis on this order of magnitude.

I argue that ongoing and self-worsening slump in the primary and secondary mortgage markets is rooted in a host of recursive collective action challenges structurally akin to those that brought on the real estate bubble and bust in the first place. Collective action problems …
