Derivation Of Screening Benchmarks For Dietary Methylmercury Exposure For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer): Rationale For Use In Ecological Risk Assessment, David C. Depew, Niladri Basu, Neil M. Burgess, Linda M. Campbell Oct 2012

Derivation Of Screening Benchmarks For Dietary Methylmercury Exposure For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer): Rationale For Use In Ecological Risk Assessment, David C. Depew, Niladri Basu, Neil M. Burgess, Linda M. Campbell

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The current understanding of methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity to avian species has improved considerably in recent years and indicates that exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of MeHg through the diet can adversely affect various aspects of avian health, reproduction, and survival. Because fish-eating birds are at particular risk for elevated MeHg exposure, the authors surveyed the available primary and secondary literature to summarize the effects of dietary MeHg on the common loon (Gavia immer) and to derive ecologically relevant toxic thresholds for dietary exposure to MeHg in fish prey. After considering the available data, the authors propose three screening benchmarks of …

How To Identify Food Deserts: Measuring Physical And Economic Access To Supermarkets In King County, Washington, Junfeng Jiao, Anne V. Moudon, Jared Ulmer, Philip M. Hurvitz, Adam Drewnowski

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Objectives. We explored new ways to identify food deserts. Methods. We estimated physical and economic access to supermarkets for 5 low-income groups in Seattle–King County, Washington. We used geographic information system data to measure physical access: service areas around each supermarket were delineated by ability to walk, bicycle, ride transit, or drive within 10 minutes. We assessed economic access by stratifying supermarkets into low, medium, and high cost. Combining income and access criteria generated multiple ways to estimate food deserts. Results. The 5 low-income group definitions yielded total vulnerable populations ranging from 4% to 33% of the county’s population. Almost …

Photosynthetic Advantage Of Invasive Species, Gabby Gurule-Small, Alis Sokolova, Patrick Stephens Oct 2012

Photosynthetic Advantage Of Invasive Species, Gabby Gurule-Small, Alis Sokolova, Patrick Stephens

Featured Research

Californians have greatly benefited from the introduction of plant and animal species necessary for food or other human pursuits; however, there are many other introduced species that can wreak havoc on the state’s environment and economy. Invasive species threaten the diversity and abundance of native species by both competing for resources and causing changes to the natural habitat. We hypothesize that invasive species will have higher photosynthetic and conductance rates which contribute to their success. Through their impacts on natural ecosystems, agricultural lands, and water delivery systems, invasive species may also negatively affect human health and possibly even the economy.

A Comparison Of Brittlebush (Encelia Farinosa) Productivity And Health During Drought And Post Rainfall, Gabi Diciolli, Karre Lawson, Anders Reimer Oct 2012

A Comparison Of Brittlebush (Encelia Farinosa) Productivity And Health During Drought And Post Rainfall, Gabi Diciolli, Karre Lawson, Anders Reimer

Featured Research

Encelia farinosa is well adapted for drought tolerance as its leaves transform color based on water availability. We were puzzled by a question that any desert botanist must consider. How does the photosynthetic efficiency of E. farinosa fluctuate as it transitions from a state of drought to a state of soil saturation within a 72 hour period? In this experiment we looked at the effects of irrigation on the health and quantum yield of the brittlebush by looking at photosynthetic rates using the portable photosynthesis system LI-COR 6400 when applied to two leaves on a given plant and water potential …

The Icsid Under Siege, Leon E. Trakman Oct 2012

The Icsid Under Siege, Leon E. Trakman

Cornell International Law Journal

Rights-based processes, including binding arbitration and traditional court trials, have limited remedies and may not address the full range of interests and needs that the parties may have. Disputes resolved on the basis of power (e.g. through gunboat diplomacy, or at the extreme, violence and war) weight the outcome in favour of the party with the most leverage, status and resources, but this may be costly on the relationships involved and may result in failure to vindicate rights.(1)

The History Of Internet Cafés And The Current Approach To Their Regulation, Marc W. Dunbar, Daniel R. Russell Oct 2012

The History Of Internet Cafés And The Current Approach To Their Regulation, Marc W. Dunbar, Daniel R. Russell

UNLV Gaming Law Journal

This Article will examine the rise of Internet cafés by tracing their gambling roots back to the early evolution of gray market slot machines, such as mint dispensers, up to more modern pull-tab machines. It will also provide an overview of how local governments, state regulators, attorneys general, and state legislatures are dealing with the spread of Internet cafés and the “simulated gambling machines” played therein. Finally, it will offer some options to communities faced with these gambling operations when state laws provide insufficient guidance, regulation, or law enforcement to address the legitimacy of these operations.

The U.S. No Longer Makes The Grade: Economic Inequality Put An End To The 'American Century', David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In his State of the Union address last January, U.S. President Barack Obama said that "anyone who tells you that America is in decline or that our influence has waned, doesn't know what they're talking about." Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, when in the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, warned that unless Americans changed directions, they would see the "end of the American century by 2015." As bright and capable as both of these politicians are, they are both whistling in the wind. The American century - the post-World War II era of U.S. global leadership and dominance …

Identifying The Effect Of Wic On Very Low Food Security Among Infants And Children, Brent Kreider, John V. Pepper, Manan Roy Oct 2012

Identifying The Effect Of Wic On Very Low Food Security Among Infants And Children, Brent Kreider, John V. Pepper, Manan Roy

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) is considered a crucial component of the social safety net in the United States, yet there is limited supporting evidence on the effects of WIC on the nutritional well-being and food security of infants and young children. Two key identification problems have been especially difficult to address. First, the decision to take up WIC is endogenous as households are not randomly assigned to the program; recipients are likely to differ from nonrecipients in unobserved ways (e.g., prior health) that are related to associated outcomes. Second, survey respondents often fail to report receiving public …

As virtual worlds continue to proliferate globally, libraries are faced with the question of whether to provide information services to virtual patrons. This study, utilizing a mixed-method approach of interviews, focus groups, and surveys, represents one of the largest studies of virtual libraries attempted to date. Taking a holistic perspective, the design and implementation of virtual library services and the information needs of 366 participants were examined with both traditional and virtual library users and librarians. Findings suggest that the information needs of traditional and virtual users differ significantly and the overall match between information provided and user needs of …

Ultrasonic Analysis Of Breast Tissue For Pathology Classification, Kristina Marie Sorensen Oct 2012

Ultrasonic Analysis Of Breast Tissue For Pathology Classification, Kristina Marie Sorensen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Real time measurements may assist surgeons in obtaining negative or cancer free margins during lumpectomy to eliminate invasive re-excision. Previous findings show that high-frequency ultrasound can differentiate between a range of breast pathologies in surgical specimens. Two parameters, peak density and second-order spectral slope, are sensitive to histopathology. Our objective was to determine the mechanism linking high-frequency ultrasound to histology. The hypothesis is that ultrasound sensitivity is a function of the microscopic heterogeneity (and thus histology) of the tissue. Ultrasonic results from breast specimens were used to construct a multivariate analysis of the parameters that permitted differentiation of normal, adipose, …

Chronic Child Neglect: Cys Staff Perspectives On Repeat Clients, Erin M. Murphy Oct 2012

Chronic Child Neglect: Cys Staff Perspectives On Repeat Clients, Erin M. Murphy

Capstone Collection

Since the late 1960‘s, child protection agencies have acted under federal mandate to intervene in cases of child abuse and neglect. In accordance with state child protection laws, these agencies provide monitoring and support services to "at-risk" families. Despite these efforts, studies have shown that a record number of parents who receive services are re-reported to the agency for additional offenses within a short period of time. The available literature attributes recidivism to delayed or mismanaged interventions and adverse socio-economic conditions among parents, but research that considers employee perspectives on chronic neglect is scant. This paper explores inter and extra-agency …

Political Space: An Opportunity Within The Lima Food System, Santiago A. Dammert

Architecture Thesis Prep

“I propose a more complex project composed of hybrid programs that reflect a deeper analysis of the site and its relations to the city and its food system, as well as programmatic interfaces that result in interactions between the different users to be located there, without compromising the market’s need for efficient transactions. An other important factor is time. Since market activities tend to take place at different times than more generic office hours within which most people work, it is important to design program with time slots in mind, generating not only spatial interfaces but chronographic interfaces”

Exploring The 4-H Thriving Model: A Commentary Through An Equity Lens, Nia Imani Fields

Journal of Youth Development

Many youth-serving organizations across the nation have made commitments to enhance their ability to better engage diverse communities with equity and inclusion at the fore. For many youth programs, there is a need to better align youth, adult leaders, and curriculum with the diverse needs and social conditions of the country. In their article, Professors Arnold and Gagnon describe the most recent iteration of a theory of change for 4-H, a national youth-serving organization that offers a variety of PYD programs. 4-H recognizes the critical need to reach the most marginalized communities, yet the opportunity gap that exists in its …

Positive Youth Development Theory In Practice: An Update On The 4-H Thriving Model, Mary Elizabeth Arnold, Ryan Gagnon

Journal of Youth Development

The 4-H Thriving Model predicts that participation in high-quality 4-H programs helps youth thrive and that thriving youth achieve key developmental outcomes, thus illuminating the process of positive youth development in 4-H. This paper provides an update on the 4-H Thriving Model, with particular attention to model modifications based on additional research. The paper then describes the formation of the Advancing the 4-H Thriving Model Task Force, a 3-year project chartered by the national 4-H Program Leaders Working Group (PLWG). The paper describes how the work of the task force will support efforts related to the professional development of 4-H …
