Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Here, we investigated the compartment-specific role of cell cycle arrest and senescence in breast cancer tumor growth. For this purpose, we generated a number of hTERT-immortalized senescent fibroblast cell lines overexpressing CDK inhibitors, such as p16(INK4A), p19(ARF) or p21(WAF1/CIP1). Interestingly, all these senescent fibroblast cell lines showed evidence of increased susceptibility toward the induction of autophagy (either at baseline or after starvation), as well as significant mitochondrial dysfunction. Most importantly, these senescent fibroblasts also dramatically promoted tumor growth (up to ~2-fold), without any comparable increases in tumor angiogenesis. Conversely, we generated human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 cells) overexpressing CDK inhibitors, …

The Puzzling Non-Consequences Of Societal Distrust Of Courts: Explaining The Use Of Russian Courts, Kathryn Hendley Oct 2012

The Puzzling Non-Consequences Of Societal Distrust Of Courts: Explaining The Use Of Russian Courts, Kathryn Hendley

Cornell International Law Journal

Russians' lack of trust in courts as an institution has been repeatedly documented through public opinion polling. Yet the caseload data show a steady increase in the use of courts by both individuals and firms in Russia. But these data cannot explain why Russians choose to use the courts. The Article makes use of two publicly available datasets grounded in representative surveys of Russian citizens and firms to investigate this puzzle. The existing literature assumes that the lack of legitimacy of courts in Russia forestalls use. While confirming the societal disdain for courts, the analysis reveals that this attitude has …

Evaluation Of A Mechanical Ventilator Education Program For Intern Physicians In An Intensive Care Nursery, William Bucher, Brian Glynn Oct 2012

Evaluation Of A Mechanical Ventilator Education Program For Intern Physicians In An Intensive Care Nursery, William Bucher, Brian Glynn

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Posters

Background: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a large urban Academic Medical Center with a level III Intensive Care Nursery (ICN). A new group of pediatric interns rotate through the ICN every year and receive limited education on mechanical ventilation. We developed a live, one hour training session performed by a Respiratory Therapist and a Respiratory Challenge Test to be completed by the physicians before and after each session. Clinical training was defined as routine training acquired during daily rotation in the ICN. We hypothesized that classroom and clinical training would be more effective than clinical training alone.

Method: After a …

Assessing The Impact Of The Ultimate Penal Sanction On Homicide Survivors: A Two State Comparison, Marilyn Peterson Armour, Mark S. Umbreit Oct 2012

Assessing The Impact Of The Ultimate Penal Sanction On Homicide Survivors: A Two State Comparison, Marilyn Peterson Armour, Mark S. Umbreit

Marquette Law Review

Numerous studies have examined the psychological sequelae that result from the murder of a loved one. Except for the death penalty, however, sparse attention has been paid to the impact of the murderer’s sentence on homicide survivors’ well-being. Given the steadfastness of the public’s opinion that the death penalty brings satisfaction and closure to survivors, it is surprising that there has been no systematic inquiry directly with survivors about whether obtaining the ultimate punishment affects their healing. This Study used in-person interviews with a randomly selected sample of survivors from four time periods to examine the totality of the ultimate …

Fitting An Old Tiger With New Teeth: Protecting Public Employee Funds Investing In Complex Financial Instruments, Richard E. Mendales Oct 2012

Fitting An Old Tiger With New Teeth: Protecting Public Employee Funds Investing In Complex Financial Instruments, Richard E. Mendales

Marquette Law Review

State employee benefit funds invested heavily in complex financial instruments before the crash of 2008. These investments were tempting to the funds because the instruments carried higher yields than those offered by traditional securities in the low interest climate created largely by Federal Reserve policies after the turn of the century. The risks of the unconventional securities were concealed by investment-grade ratings issued by credit rating agencies and by deceptive marketing practices. With the crash, funds incurred major losses, which, unlike losses by private funds, are not insured by the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

This Article deals both with …

New Deal Leftists, Henry Wallace And "Gideon's Army," And The Progressive Party In Montana, 1937-1952, Hugh T. Lovin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Many forces occupied America's sociopolitical terrain to the left of New Dealers who dominated U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt's administration of the 1930s. Some fastened themselves temporarily to the New Dealers' coattails. Ideologically motivated, others touted their special panaceas for ending the Great Depression that had begun in 1929, and certain of the mainstream Democratic Party's expatriates added to this cacophony by pursuing their own agendas. Comprised principally of the Democratic Party's out-of-power people, another group wanted to restore Roosevelt's reforming to its 1933-34 height, change the federal government's thrust to the leftward in. certain particulars, and impose New Deal-style reform …

From Mothers' Pensions To Aid To Dependent Children In The Great Plains: The Course From Charity To Entitlement, R. Alton Lee

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The most important third-party movement in American history emerged out of the social and economic chaos brewing in the Great Plains in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. The maelstrom, labeled Populism, contained a powerful, indeed a truly revolutionary message-that man was his brother's keeper. This concept proved to have consistent influence in America, dating from the Populists, through the Progressives and the New Deal depression era, to the Great Society of the 1960s. Henry Loucks of South Dakota, one-time president of the National Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union and chairman of the Populist convention in Omaha in …

Cu2o And Au/Cu2o Particles: Surface Properties And Applications In Glucose Sensing, Yu-Ho Won, Lia A. Stanciu

Birck and NCN Publications

In this work we investigated the surface and facet-dependent catalytic properties of metal oxide particles as well as noble metal/metal oxide heterogeneous structures, with cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and Au/Cu2O being selected as model systems. As an example of application, we explored the potential of these materials in developing electrocatalytic devices. Cu2O particles were synthesized in various shapes, then used for testing their morphology-dependent electrochemical properties applied to the detection of glucose. While we did not attempt to obtain the best detection limit reported to date, the octahedral and hexapod Cu2O particles showed reasonable detection limits of 0.51 and 0.60 mM, …

Tinkering Around The Edges: The Supreme Court's Death Penalty Jurisprudence, John Bessler Oct 2012

Tinkering Around The Edges: The Supreme Court's Death Penalty Jurisprudence, John Bessler

All Faculty Scholarship

This Essay examines America's death penalty forty years after Furman and provides a critique of the Supreme Court's existing Eighth Amendment case law. Part I briefly summarizes how the Court, to date, has approached death sentences, while Part II highlights the incongruous manner in which the Cruel and Unusual Punishments Clause has been read. For instance, Justice Antonin Scalia-one of the Court's most vocal proponents of "originalism" conceded that corporal punishments such as handbranding and public flogging are no longer constitutionally permissible; yet, he (and the Court itself) continues to allow death sentences to be imposed. The American Bar Association …
