The Cephalopod Sequencing Consortium (CephSeq Consortium) was established at a NESCent Catalysis Group Meeting, “Paths to Cephalopod Genomics- Strategies, Choices, Organization,” held in Durham, North Carolina, USA on May 24-27, 2012. Twenty-eight participants representing nine countries (Austria, Australia, China, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Spain and the USA) met to address the pressing need for genome sequencing of cephalopod mollusks. This group, drawn from cephalopod biologists, neuroscientists, developmental and evolutionary biologists, materials scientists, bioinformaticians and researchers active in sequencing, assembling and annotating genomes, agreed on a set of cephalopod species of particular importance for initial sequencing and developed strategies and an …

Acute Heart Transplant Rejection In The Presence Of Apparently Weak, Non-Complement-Fixing Donor-Specific Antibodies Detected At The Time Of Transplant, Anthony Nizio, Paul J. Mather, Beth Colombe

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Poster presented at: American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) conference.

AIM: A 66 year old female with an end-stage NYHA class IV inotrope-dependent, ischemic cardiomyopathy received a heart transplant on 9-12-09 from a doctor having antigens B13 and DR7. Pre-transplant antibody testing indicated only weakly positive, non-complement fixing donor-specific antibodies. The patient suffered a cardiac arrest on POD#6 and was resuscitated. She was in cardiogenic shock from allograft failure and subsequently expired on POD#9 of multiorgan failure due to "acute humoral rejection". These antibodies were investigated further.

METHODS: Antibodies were evaluated using Labscreen PRA (One Lambda), Labscreen Single Antigen …

Learning In Both Worlds: Academic Journalism As A Research Outcome, Lisa J. Waller Oct 2012

Learning In Both Worlds: Academic Journalism As A Research Outcome, Lisa J. Waller

Research Journalism

Works of journalism by journalism academics can be valuable outcomes of research without making the claim that they are scholarly works per se. In the discussion of the feature article Learning in both worlds that follows, I make a case for the importance of writing and publishing this piece of journalism as an outcome of my research on the interplay of news media and bilingual education policy in Australia’s Northern Territory 1988-2008. I also advocate the ‘experimental’ possibilities such works of journalism offer for ‘testing’ research findings, concepts and theories.

Targeted Learning Of The Probability Of Success Of An In Vitro Fertilization Program Controlling For Time-Dependent Confounders, Antoine Chambaz, Sherri Rose, Jean Bouyer, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Infertility is a global public health issue and various treatments are available. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an increasingly common treatment method, but accurately assessing the success of IVF programs has proven challenging since they consist of multiple cycles. We present a double robust semiparametric method that incorporates machine learning to estimate the probability of success (i.e., delivery resulting from embryo transfer) of a program of at most four IVF cycles in the French Devenir Apr`es Interruption de la FIV (DAIFI) study and several simulation studies, controlling for time-dependent confounders. We find that the probability of success in the DAIFI …

Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Neighborhood Disadvantage And Adolescent Substance Use, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright, Gillian M. Pinchevsky Oct 2012

Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Relationship Between Neighborhood Disadvantage And Adolescent Substance Use, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright, Gillian M. Pinchevsky

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Although social disorganization theory hypothesizes that neighborhood characteristics influence youth delinquency, the impact of neighborhood disadvantage on adolescent substance use and racial/ethnic differences in this relationship have not been widely investigated. The present study examines these issues using longitudinal data from 1,856 African American, Hispanic, and Caucasian adolescents participating in the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN). The results indicated that neighborhood disadvantage did not significantly increase the likelihood of substance use for the full sample. When relationships were analyzed by race/ethnicity, one significant (p ≤ .10) effect was found; disadvantage increased alcohol use among African Americans …

Exploring The Effects Of Managerial Ownership On The Decision To Go Private: A Behavioral Agency Model Approach, Alix Valenti, Marguerite Schneider Oct 2012

Exploring The Effects Of Managerial Ownership On The Decision To Go Private: A Behavioral Agency Model Approach, Alix Valenti, Marguerite Schneider

Administrative Issues Journal

This paper utilizes the behavioral agency model to investigate why many formerly public companies have been converted to privately held corporations. Using a matched pairs sample and categorical binary regression, and controlling for effects found in previous studies, we explore how the equity ownership of those entrusted to manage firms, the firms’ executives, might affect their perceptions of the risks of going private and might therefore affect the decision to take a company private. This study complements prior research examining the predictors of public to private transactions and illustrates how behavioral agency theory can provide insight into a major decision …

Quantifying The Regional Water Footprint Of Biofuel Production By Incorporating Hydrologic Modeling, M. Wu, Y. Chiu, Y. Demissie Oct 2012

Quantifying The Regional Water Footprint Of Biofuel Production By Incorporating Hydrologic Modeling, M. Wu, Y. Chiu, Y. Demissie

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

A spatially explicit life cycle water analysis framework is proposed, in which a standardized water footprint methodology is coupled with hydrologic modeling to assess blue water, green water (rainfall), and agricultural grey water discharge in the production of biofuel feedstock at county-level resolution. Grey water is simulated via SWAT, a watershed model. Evapotranspiration (ET) estimates generated with the Penman-Monteith equation and crop parameters were verified by using remote sensing results, a satellite-imagery-derived data set, and other field measurements. Crop irrigation survey data are used to corroborate the estimate of irrigation ET. An application of the concept is presented in a …

Objectives: To assess health-related quality of life (HRQL) over 2 years in children 4-12 years old with new-onset epilepsy and risk factors. Methods: Data are from a multicenter prospective cohort study, the Health-Related Quality of Life Study in Children with Epilepsy Study (HERQULES). Parents reported on children's HRQL and family factors and neurologists on clinical characteristics 4 times. Mean subscale and summary scores were computed for HRQL. Individual growth curve models identified trajectories of change in HRQL scores. Multiple regression identified baseline risk factors for HRQL 2 years later. Results: A total of 374 (82%) questionnaires were returned postdiagnosis and …

A Quasi-Experimental Test Of The Elementary School Success Profile Model Of Assessment And Prevention, Natasha K. Bowen, Aaron M. Thompson, Joelle D. Powers

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Elementary School Success Profile Model of Assessment and Prevention (ESSP MAP) is an assessment and intervention strategy designed to improve student academic performance and behavior. The current analysis uses a quasi-experimental design to examine the relationship between a 3-year implementation of the ESSP MAP and aggregate academic outcomes. Students in one 3rd grade cohort (2007-2008) from 4 schools in 1 district received the intervention as they progressed from 3rd to 5th grade. Longitudinal hierarchical linear modeling with cross-classified effects of schools (N = 10) and cohorts (N = 11) was used to compare trajectories of reading proficiency percentages for …
