The Values-Based Revolution, David B. Brauer Dec 2012

The Values-Based Revolution, David B. Brauer

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The key to creating a successful business is not guaranteed by disingenuously "going green" especially if that term lacks certain definition. Rather, in addition to adopting principles of environmental stewardship, the values-based leader will discover that in freely espousing and implementing principles in the workplace, consumers with like values will often pay a product and/or service premium to patronize a business demonstrating like mindset. This is the true way of achieving business success.

Module-Based Subnetwork Alignments Reveal Novel Transcriptional Regulators In Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Hong Cai, Changjin Hong, Jianying Gu, Timothy G. Lilburn, Rui Kuang, Yufeng Wang Dec 2012

Module-Based Subnetwork Alignments Reveal Novel Transcriptional Regulators In Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Hong Cai, Changjin Hong, Jianying Gu, Timothy G. Lilburn, Rui Kuang, Yufeng Wang

Publications and Research

Background Malaria causes over one million deaths annually, posing an enormous health and economic burden in endemic regions. The completion of genome sequencing of the causative agents, a group of parasites in the genus Plasmodium, revealed potential drug and vaccine candidates. However, genomics-driven target discovery has been significantly hampered by our limited knowledge of the cellular networks associated with parasite development and pathogenesis. In this paper, we propose an approach based on aligning neighborhood PPI subnetworks across species to identify network components in the malaria parasite P. falciparum. Results Instead of only relying on sequence similarities to detect functional orthologs, …

Global Profiling Of Alternative Splicing Events And Gene Expression Regulated By Hnrnph/F, Erming Wang, Vahid Aslanzadeh, Filomena Papa, Haiyan Zhu, Pierre De La Grange, Franca Cambi

Neurology Faculty Publications

In this study, we have investigated the global impact of heterogeneous nuclear Ribonuclear Protein (hnRNP) H/F-mediated regulation of splicing events and gene expression in oligodendrocytes. We have performed a genome-wide transcriptomic analysis at the gene and exon levels in Oli-neu cells treated with siRNA that targets hnRNPH/F compared to untreated cells using Affymetrix Exon Array. Gene expression levels and regulated exons were identified with the GenoSplice EASANA algorithm. Bioinformatics analyses were performed to determine the structural properties of G tracts that correlate with the function of hnRNPH/F as enhancers vs. repressors of exon inclusion. Different types of alternatively spliced events …

Developing A Decision Support System For Emergency Management Services In The Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, Katherine E. Schaefer Dec 2012

Developing A Decision Support System For Emergency Management Services In The Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, Katherine E. Schaefer

Geosciences

Every year the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB), in interior Alaska, responds to common emergencies, as well as disasters of varying types. This research first tested several geographic information systems (GIS) based network analysis models to demonstrate how these models could serve as 'decision support' tools for emergency planning and response. Six network analysis models based on FNSB data were evaluated to determine the response times of local fire stations. Each model was tested against real call times and simulated summertime fire emergency response call times to verify model accuracy. The simulated times matched the modeled predictions with remarkably high …

Evaluating Dust Palliative Performance And Longevity Using The Uaf-Dustm, Travis Warren Eckhoff Dec 2012

Evaluating Dust Palliative Performance And Longevity Using The Uaf-Dustm, Travis Warren Eckhoff

Engineering

Fugitive dust emissions from gravel surfaces such as unpaved roads and airport runways are a major source of particulate matter pollution in the environment. Fugitive dust emissions impact community health, decrease visibility and contribute to surface degradation. Chemical additives, also known as dust palliatives, are often used to reduce these dust emissions. Although these products have been widely used, little is known about their effectiveness and longevity. There is currently no standard test method to quantify the reduction in fugitive dust emissions provided by dust palliatives. The UAF-DUSTM was developed to provide a consistent test method for determining the effectiveness …

Characterizing The Berthing Load Environment Of The Seattle Ferry Teminal, Bremerton Slip, Jason E. Kwiatkowski Dec 2012

Characterizing The Berthing Load Environment Of The Seattle Ferry Teminal, Bremerton Slip, Jason E. Kwiatkowski

Engineering

This manuscript characterizes and presents design recommendations for berthing demands on ferry landing structures. There is a lack of research focused on the berthing load demand imparted by ferry class vessels, therefore the load criteria used for design is often based on a number of assumptions. This study involved a one-year field study of the structural load environment of wingwalls at the Bremerton Slip of the Seattle Ferry Terminal, located in Elliott Bay adjacent to Seattle, Washington. Measurements of marine fender displacement, vessel approach distance with respect to time, and. pile strain were used to determine berthing demands. Berthing event …

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth Dec 2012

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth

Fisheries

Federal law requires that resource management agencies consider stakeholder input in the selection of preferred alternatives for proposed actions. Not only do stakeholders contribute unique perspectives on the impact of alternative actions and the desirability of various policy objectives, including stakeholders in the decision process adds to the perceived legitimacy of those decisions. Incorporating stakeholder input is legally required and advantageous to sustainable governance of the oceans and implementation of a National Ocean Policy such as ecosystem-based management. Agencies use a variety of formal and informal mechanisms to solicit and incorporate stakeholder input. In this study, we compare expert panel …

Data collection was conducted using recorded telephone interviews that were transcribed, analyzed, and summarized. This dissertation used one introductory question and ten research questions to examine the organizational issues related to governance and management of off-campus centers. The introductory question was: What are the issues and …

Multiple Regulatory Mechanisms Control B-1 B Cell Activation, Vishal Sindhava, Subbarao Bondada Dec 2012

Multiple Regulatory Mechanisms Control B-1 B Cell Activation, Vishal Sindhava, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

B-1 cells constitute a unique subset of B cells identified in several species including mice and humans. B-1 cells are further subdivided into B-1a and B-1b subsets as the former but not the later express CD5.The B-1a subset contributes to innate type of immune responses while the B-1b B cell subset contributes to adaptive responses. B-1 cell responses to B cell receptor (BCR) as well as Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligation are tightly regulated due to the cross-reactivity of antigen specific receptors on B-1 cells to self-antigens. B-1 cells are elevated in several autoimmune diseases. CD5 plays a major role in …
