Bereavement In Emerging Adulthood: The Influence Of Religion And Type Of Loss, Elizabeth Collison Dec 2012

Bereavement In Emerging Adulthood: The Influence Of Religion And Type Of Loss, Elizabeth Collison

Theses and Dissertations

Bereavement is an important area of research as it may result in grief reactions that lead to serious psychological and health consequences (Stroebe, Schut, & Stroebe, 2007). Positive outcomes, such as personal growth or spiritual well-being, may also transpire post-loss (Hogan & Schmidt, 2002; Paloutzian & Ellison, 1982). Though research on bereavement has grown, few studies have focused on the at-risk group of emerging adults (Hardison, Neimeyer, & Lichstein, 2005; Arnett, 2000). The current study aims to add to the bereavement in emerging adulthood literature through analyzing descriptive data and assessing the impact of type of loss (i.e., nonviolent vs. …

Continuing Education Training Focused On The Development Of Behavioral Telehealth Competencies In Behavioral Healthcare Providers, Valerie Gifford, Britton Niles, Inna Rivkin, Catherine Koverola, Jodi Polaha

ETSU Faculty Works

Introduction: Telehealth allows behavioral health care and specialty services to be extended to rural residents. Telehealth is an important resource for the Alaskan healthcare system, which is tasked with providing services to culturally diverse populations living in remote areas. Training competent providers to deliver telehealth services is vital for the implementation of successful telehealth programs. Yet, the literature is lacking in the area of provider behavioral telehealth competency training.

Methods: This study assessed the impact of a Behavioral Telehealth Ethical Competencies Training program on 16 behavioral health providers' development of behavioral telehealth competency. A total of 14 competencies were developed, …

Gene, Pathway And Network Frameworks To Identify Epistatic Interactions Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Derived From Gwas Data, Yu Liu, Sean Maxwell, Tao Feng, Xiaofeng Zhu, Robert C. Elston, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Interactions among genomic loci (also known as epistasis) have been suggested as one of the potential sources of missing heritability in single locus analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The computational burden of searching for interactions is compounded by the extremely low threshold for identifying significant p-values due to multiple hypothesis testing corrections. Utilizing prior biological knowledge to restrict the set of candidate SNP pairs to be tested can alleviate this problem, but systematic studies that investigate the relative merits of integrating different biological frameworks and GWAS data have not been conducted. Results: We developed four biologically based frameworks to …

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ang1 (Angiopoietin-1) have opposing effects on vascular permeability, but the molecular basis of these effects is not fully known. We report in this paper that VEGF and Ang1 regulate endothelial cell (EC) junctions by determining the localization of the RhoA-specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor Syx. Syx was recruited to junctions by members of the Crumbs polarity complex and promoted junction integrity by activating Diaphanous. VEGF caused translocation of Syx from cell junctions, promoting junction disassembly, whereas Ang1 maintained Syx at the junctions, inducing junction stabilization. The VEGF-induced translocation of Syx from EC junctions was …

Factors Causing Demotivation In Efl Teaching Process: A Case Study, Selami Aydin Dec 2012

Factors Causing Demotivation In Efl Teaching Process: A Case Study, Selami Aydin

The Qualitative Report

Studies have mainly focused on strategies to motivate teachers or the student-teacher motivation relationships rather than teacher demotivation in the English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching process, whereas no data have been found on the factors that cause teacher demotivation in the Turkish EFL teaching contexts at the elementary education level. Thus, this study aims to investigate the demotivating factors in EFL teaching at the elementary level. The study was designed as a qualitative case study, and involved face-to-face conversations, MSN talks and a diary maintained by the subject for data collection. The results showed that the problems were …

Arctic Fox Winter Movement And Diet In Relation To Industrial Development On Alaska's North Slope, Neil S. Lehner Dec 2012

Arctic Fox Winter Movement And Diet In Relation To Industrial Development On Alaska's North Slope, Neil S. Lehner

Biological Sciences

I examined winter movement and diet of Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) in the Prudhoe Bay oilfields and an adjacent undeveloped area (National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A)). Movement metrics were compared between these areas using data from satellite collars. Daily travel rate was approximately 5 times greater in the undeveloped area than in Prudhoe Bay. Four adult foxes collared in NPR-A used the sea ice for extensive time periods. One of these foxes traveled 338 km in three days while another traveled to Banks Island (Northwest Territories, Canada), over 1050 km from its capture location. Prudhoe Bay foxes did not make these …

Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik Dec 2012

Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik

Master's Theses

From thunderstorms to hurricanes, electric distribution networks are subject to a wide range of warm weather storm events. Tropical Storm Irene (2011) and Hurricane Sandy (2012) are two events in recent memory that disrupted over half of The Connecticut Light and Power Company’s (CL&P) service territory, which left some customers without power for up to eleven days. This research study investigates a damage prediction framework for both thunderstorms and hurricanes that combines two generalized linear models to probabilistically determine the occurrence and extent of damages, known as trouble spots, to the overhead power distribution network. The models are inputted with …

Current Opinion On Nanotoxicology, Ali Pourmand, Mohammad Abdollahi Dec 2012

Current Opinion On Nanotoxicology, Ali Pourmand, Mohammad Abdollahi

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

Nanotechnology is one of the premiere technologies available today, having expanded both as field of scientific study and in the public consciousness. Despite this growth, the drawbacks, limitations and potential safety hazards associated with the incorporation of nanotechnology into existing industries are still being learned. The noticeable point is that there is no enough data available yet to analyze global use of nanotechnology from a meta-perspective. Three challenges can be defined in light of nanotoxicology. One, materials that might prove to be significantly toxic must be identified. Two, a system for the categorization of NP materials must be codified and …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-12-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Debating Immigration: Arizona's Controversial Response To Illegal Hispanic Immigration, Parker M. Wornall Dec 2012

Debating Immigration: Arizona's Controversial Response To Illegal Hispanic Immigration, Parker M. Wornall

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Hispanic Immigration into the United States is no new phenomena. What is new in regards to this immigration is the strict measures being taken by various states where Hispanic immigration is most prevalent. These laws are proving to be arbitrary, punitive, and unethical. Arizona was the first to pass a “stop policy” on immigration with Senate Bill 1070. This bill does not aptly address the many push and pull factors that have caused this immigration; push factors being factors that will drive people away from Latin America, and pull factors being factors that attract them to the United States. Likewise, …

Personal Reflections On Jumah Cola Time To Drink And A Declaration Of Ideals, Joel R. Fickel

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Approximately one year ago, I founded an experimental theater group on the campus of Western Kentucky University called The Corporate Surrealists of America. The group is made up of artists from radically different departments and disciplines and is focused on fostering an alternative kind of performance that is both richly multi-disciplinary and seriously concerned with burning political, social, and historical issues. One of the group’s main tenets has been to attempt to make art in the periphery of an institution as much as possible. Several thrilling independent productions were mounted including NIGHT RAID, WITH THESE MY HANDS OF THE …
