Parental Problems, Case Plan Requirements, And Service Targeting In Child Welfare Reunification, Amy C. D’Andrade, R. Chambers Jan 2012

Parental Problems, Case Plan Requirements, And Service Targeting In Child Welfare Reunification, Amy C. D’Andrade, R. Chambers

Faculty Publications

Only about half of parents attempting to reunify with their children in foster care succeed in their efforts. Parents are ordered by the court to use treatment services in order to resolve their problems. These treatment services thus play a critical role in reunification, and in fact the use of services appropriately matched to parents' problems has been found to be associated with a greater likelihood of reunification. However, there is little in the literature regarding the specific requirements of reunification case plans, and whether they are accurately targeted at reunifying parents' problems. This mostly descriptive study uses case file …

What Place Has Grammar In The English Curriculum? An Analysis Of Ninety Years’ Policy Debate: 1921 To 2011., Phillip Richard Norman Jan 2012

What Place Has Grammar In The English Curriculum? An Analysis Of Ninety Years’ Policy Debate: 1921 To 2011., Phillip Richard Norman

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

Since 1921 England’s governments have commissioned enquiries into English and literacy teaching, leading towards published recommendations and requirements for English grammar teaching. Governments’ officially sanctioned publications represent their policy aspirations for English and literacy. Research studies have explored the subsequent challenge for schools and teachers who must integrate grammar into a subject whose wider philosophies may conflict with an explicit grammar element. My study draws on critical theory to analyse the ideological discourses of English grammar these official policy documents reveal, and how they conflict or coincide with wider ideologies of English and literacy in schools. My study uses a …

‘Socio-Economic And Livelihood Impacts Of Environmentally Supportive Bio-Enterprise Development For The Agro-/Pastoral Communities In Samburu Heartland, Kenya’., Susan Alison Wren Jan 2012

‘Socio-Economic And Livelihood Impacts Of Environmentally Supportive Bio-Enterprise Development For The Agro-/Pastoral Communities In Samburu Heartland, Kenya’., Susan Alison Wren

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The question of agro/pastoral livelihoods adaptation is gaining attention in the rural development arena but little empirical evidence exists that has examined the performance and impact of diversified enterprises on agro/pastoral livelihoods and the environment in the ASAL, and on how to effectively support such initiatives. Additionally, there has been little evaluation of the type of behavioural patterns that agro/pastoral communities need to evolve in order to engage in such initiatives. This research study endeavours to bridge this knowledge-gap and assist the ASAL communities, NGOs, CBOs and government departments to understand the skills and resources required to develop climate-resilient, environmentally …

The Effect Of Sea Level Rise On Radionuclide Mobility At Contaminated Nuclear Sites, Jane Eagling Jan 2012

The Effect Of Sea Level Rise On Radionuclide Mobility At Contaminated Nuclear Sites, Jane Eagling

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Global sea levels are expected to rise as a result of climate change, which will lead to the inundation and erosion of low lying coastal areas and accelerate the intrusion of seawater into sub-surface sediments. Many of the UK’s legacy nuclear facilities are located in close proximity to the shore, raising questions regarding the potential mobilisation of radionuclides during sea level rise. Here batch and column experiments were used to simulate and investigate the effect of these processes on the mobilisation of key radionuclides Tc, 90Sr and U from oxic and reduced sediments under sea level rise scenarios. Strontium-90 was …

A Court Of Law Or A Court Of Conscience: A Critique Of The Decision In Re A (Children), Laura Offer Jan 2012

A Court Of Law Or A Court Of Conscience: A Critique Of The Decision In Re A (Children), Laura Offer

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article critiques the legal reasoning adopted by the Court of Appeal in Re A (Children) – the controversial case which addressed the separation of conjoined twins Rose and Grace Attard (or 'Mary and Jodie'). Separation would ensure survival for Jodie and death for Mary; as such, the Court of Appeal was required to consider whether separation constituted murder or whether it was justifiable as a protective measure for Jodie. In this article, the author examines the separate lines of reasoning adopted by each of the three judges in Re A, explores the precedents used to justify separation, discusses the …

New Trends In Religious Freedom: The Battle Of The Headscarf, Natalie Melmore

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

Freedom of religion has been described as the paradigm freedom of conscience and of the essence in a free society, but the re-emergence of religion in the public sphere has elicited great publicity. The wearing of the female Islamic dress, commonly the headscarf (hijab), is a complex and multi-faceted issue that is often raised in legal and political debates, particularly in the education and employment areas across Europe. This work examines the role of the European Union in the regulation of Member States‟ approaches to individuals wearing the Islamic headscarf. The European Convention of Human Rights and decisions of the …

Carbon Management And Scenario Planning At The Landscape Scale With Gis, Shabnam Delfan Azari Jan 2012

Carbon Management And Scenario Planning At The Landscape Scale With Gis, Shabnam Delfan Azari

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Carbon Management and Scenario Planning at the Landscape Scale with GIS By: Shabnam Delfan Azari It is now widely believed that globally averaged temperatures will rise significantly over the next 100 years as a result of increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as carbon dioxide. Responses to the threat of future climate change are both adaptations to new climate conditions, and mitigation of the magnitude of change. Mitigation can be achieved both through reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and by increasing storage of carbon in the earth system. In particular it is thought that there is potential for …

The Governance Of Security In The Revanchist City- The Case Of Cape Town, South Africa, Till Frederik Paasche Jan 2012

The Governance Of Security In The Revanchist City- The Case Of Cape Town, South Africa, Till Frederik Paasche

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The governance of security in the revanchist city- The case of Cape Town, South Africa Much has been written on the revanchist city (for example Smith, 1996; MacLeod, 2002; Belina and Helms, 2003) and the reclaiming of space from so-called ‘undesirables‘ through the means of the police. Here, the guiding ideas are policing strategies such as the ‘broken windows syndrome‘ (Kelling and Wilson, 1982) and ‘zero tolerance policing‘ (Giuliani and Bratton, 1994; Beckett and Herbert, 2008; Herbert and Beckett, 2010). However, the role of private security companies in the reclaiming of public space remains under-researched. Using a case study in …

Don't Forget Dad: Addressing Women's Poverty By Rethinking Forced And Outdated Child Support Policies, Daniel L. Hatcher Jan 2012

Don't Forget Dad: Addressing Women's Poverty By Rethinking Forced And Outdated Child Support Policies, Daniel L. Hatcher

All Faculty Scholarship

In the dialogues regarding reducing poverty among women, especially mothers, the inextricably linked issues surrounding low-income men must be simultaneously considered. In social policy addressing women’s poverty, poor fathers have too often been considered primarily as an enemy to be pursued rather than a fellow victim of poverty’s wrath, and potential partner towards the cure. We want someone to blame, and many assume that poor single mothers are best served by always being encouraged — and even forced — to pursue the noncustodial fathers for financial support through adversarial means. Mothers applying for public assistance are forced to sue the …

Beyond Saints And Sinners: Discretion And The Need For New Narratives In The U.S. Immigration System, Elizabeth Keyes Jan 2012

Beyond Saints And Sinners: Discretion And The Need For New Narratives In The U.S. Immigration System, Elizabeth Keyes

All Faculty Scholarship

Beyond Saints and Sinners examines the forces affecting the exercise of discretion in American immigration courts, and argues that in this present age of immigration anxiety, the same facts that place an individual in deportation proceedings may constitute the reasons a judge will, relying on discretion, deny them relief for which they are otherwise eligible. The article explores the polarized narratives told about "good" and "bad" immigrants, the exceptionally difficult task of adjudicating in overburdened immigration courts, and the ways in which these polarized narratives interact with psychological short-cuts, or heuristics, that affect judicial exercises of discretion. After engaging in …

How The Expressive Power Of Title Ix Dilutes Its Promise, Dionne L. Koller Jan 2012

How The Expressive Power Of Title Ix Dilutes Its Promise, Dionne L. Koller

All Faculty Scholarship

Title IX is widely credited with shaping new norms for the world of sports by requiring educational institutions to provide equal athletic opportunities to women. The statute and regulations send a message that women are entitled to participate in sports on terms equal to men. For several decades, this message of equality produced dramatic results in participation rates, as the number of women interested in athletics grew substantially. Despite these gains, however, many women and girls, especially those of color and lower socio-economic status, still do not participate in sports, or remain interested in participating, in numbers comparable to their …

Big Brother Or Little Brother? Surrendering Seizure Privacy For The Benefits Of Communication Technology, José F. Anderson Jan 2012

Big Brother Or Little Brother? Surrendering Seizure Privacy For The Benefits Of Communication Technology, José F. Anderson

All Faculty Scholarship

Over two centuries have passed since Benjamin Franklin quipped that we should defend privacy over security if people wanted either privacy or security. Although his axiom did not become a rule of law in its original form, its principles found voice in the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution's Bill of Rights. To a lesser extent, provisions against the quartering of troops in private homes found in the Third Amendment also support the idea that what a government can require you to do, or who you must have behind the doors of your home, is an area of grave …

Confine Is Fine: Have The Non-Dangerous Mentally Ill Lost Their Right To Liberty? An Empirical Study To Unravel The Psychiatrist’S Crystal Ball, Donald H. Stone

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article will examine the reverse trend in civil commitment laws in the wake of recent tragedies and discuss the effect of broader civil commitment standards on the care and treatment of the mentally ill. The 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, the 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Giffords, and the 2012 Aurora movie theatre shooting have spurred fierce debates about the dangerousness of mentally ill and serve as cautionary tale about what happens when warning signs go unnoticed and opportunities for early intervention missed. This piece will explore the misconception about the role medication and inpatient civil commitments should play in prevention …

The Effect Of Dietary Chromium(Iii) On Growth And Carbohydrate Utilization In Mirror And Common Carp (Cyprinus Carpio) L., Arafat R. Ahmed

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The aim of feed formulation in aquaculture is to supply a suitable diet that provides nutritional requirements at relatively low cost. Carbohydrates are the most economic energy source for animals compared to protein and lipid; however, fish have limited capacity for dietary carbohydrate utilization. Trivalent chromium is an essential micronutrient for carbohydrate metabolism in vertebrates. The primary objective of this thesis was to enhance understanding of the effects of organic and inorganic forms of Cr on carbohydrate utilization, growth performance, gene expression and activity of specific key liver enzymes in carp Cyprinus carpio. In addition, effects of dietary Cr on …

The Development Of Vocational Interests And Abilities In Secondary School Aged Children, Stephanie Jane Bennett Jan 2012

The Development Of Vocational Interests And Abilities In Secondary School Aged Children, Stephanie Jane Bennett

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This body of work has focussed on the measurement, structure and stability of vocational interests and abilities in mainstream, mixed-ability secondary school aged children. This set of studies investigated how a large group of children’s vocational interests developed over a two year period, and how their interests for activities/occupations were related to selected abilities (Mechanical, Spatial Rotation and Logical Reasoning). Published research has consistently demonstrated that for adults, vocational interests are stable over time, and that interests typically fall into six main categories; Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional (Holland, 1959). Furthermore, there is a wealth of evidence to …

Enrichment Of Minority Dna In Admixes Of Dna Samples:Potential Use In Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis(Nipd), Of Down Syndrome, Tara Miran Jan 2012

Enrichment Of Minority Dna In Admixes Of Dna Samples:Potential Use In Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis(Nipd), Of Down Syndrome, Tara Miran

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) is a promising approach that is currently being developed. The principle is that fetal material can be detected in maternal plasma and potentially enable women to pursue reliable and timely prenatal diagnosis, whilst eliminating the risk of miscarriage associated with chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis. However NIPD research has been restricted up until now for the diagnosis of Down syndrome due to the low concentration of free fetal DNA (ffDNA) in maternal plasma. Various methods have been developed in an attempt to increase the concentration of ffDNA. This study uses COLD-PCR (co-amplification at lower denaturation temperature …

Epidemiology And Public Health Significance Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Cattle In The Highlands Of Cameroon, Julius Awah Ndukum Jan 2012

Epidemiology And Public Health Significance Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Cattle In The Highlands Of Cameroon, Julius Awah Ndukum

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious neglected zoonosis of cattle that is prevalent but under-investigated in Cameroon, hence this study was designed to assess the epidemiology of bovine TB in cattle, risks for M. bovis infection in cattle and humans; and public health implications of zoonotic bovine TB in the highlands of Cameroon. A retrospective study of meat inspection records (1994 – 2010) was done to estimate the prevalence of TB lesions in slaughtered cattle in the North West region. The prevalence of bovine TB and anti-bovine TB antibodies in live cattle based on tuberculin skin tests (2 surveys) and …

Abstract Antioxidant properties of green tea (GT) have been widely reported. The antioxidant capacity (AOC) of green tea was investigated to include the effect of infusion time over 24 hours. The AOC was measured by the FRAP, DPPH, TEAC, and CBA assays. It was proven according that after 2 hours of brewing, tea has higher AOC and Total phenolic content (TPC), these significantly decreases after 4 hours. GT has a high amount of polyphenols with potent AOC. However, interactions between polyphenols and food matrix may decrease their potential benefit. The objective of this experiment was to test the hypothesis that …
