Fluctuation Of Organochlorine Concentrations In Bull Sharks At Different Life Stages, Mackenzie R. Phillips Jan 2026

Fluctuation Of Organochlorine Concentrations In Bull Sharks At Different Life Stages, Mackenzie R. Phillips

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

For Carcharhinid species such as the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), the maternal offloading of nutrients is essential for pup development and growth, however, significant amounts of OCs are also transferred. As a top predator in aquatic food webs, bull sharks can potentially bioaccumulate high concentrations of pollutants such as dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) that biomagnify through aquatic food webs. These pollutants are also hydrophobic and fat soluble and therefore pose toxicity risks to developing young bull sharks. In this study, liver tissues collected from juvenile bull sharks inhabiting Florida’s coastal waters were analyzed for a suite of organochlorine pesticides (OCs) …

Two attention models provide complementary perspectives on gene importance and are fused through a novel combination metric. Applied to COVID-19 nasopharyngeal swab profiles, the attention-weighted representations achieved 94.23% classification accuracy, high sensitivity, …

Exploring Fructose Mimetics As Chemotherapeutic Potentiators: Impact On Glut5-Mediated Cancer Cell Vulnerability, Vedant Buwa Jan 2026

Exploring Fructose Mimetics As Chemotherapeutic Potentiators: Impact On Glut5-Mediated Cancer Cell Vulnerability, Vedant Buwa

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Metabolic reprogramming toward increased sugar uptake is a hallmark of cancer, and fructose-specific uptake through the facilitative transporter GLUT5 is selectively upregulated in several adenocarcinomas, including breast and lung cancer. This dissertation develops and characterizes a panel of fluorescent fructose mimetics – the coumarin-based ManCou probes and the quinolinone-based ManQuin probes – as GLUT5-targeted reporters, cytotoxic effectors, and chemosensitization adjuvants, and establishes the boundaries within which each role holds.

The central experimental strategy pairs each GLUT5-targeted glycoconjugate with its sugar-free aglycone control, isolating transporter-mediated cytotoxicity from cytotoxicity intrinsic to the fluorophore itself. In luminal (MCF7) and triple-negative (MDA-MB-231) breast carcinoma, …

Reading Between The Lines: Protected, But Not From Interpretation, Hooriya Habib Jan 2026

Reading Between The Lines: Protected, But Not From Interpretation, Hooriya Habib

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In the realm of television, audiences are interactive viewers who decode meaning based on their lived experiences. Given that each culture has its own set of cultural codes it uses as a lens to navigate life, meanings do not remain constant. This cultural media study breaks down three advertisements to study the effectiveness of these advertisements in relation to religious and cultural codes. Using Stuart Hall’s (1980) encoding/decoding model, an oppositional reading was employed to understand the disconnect that may be caused between an audience of rural Pakistani women and the producers. Objects of focus were nonverbal codes such as …

Public Perception Of Environmental Contamination And Its Implications For Fish And Community Health In West Bengal, India, Libia Hazra

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

In West Bengal, India, the highest fish-consuming state in the country, fish are woven into everyday life, including ceremonies of birth and marriage, prayers offered during harvesting and the cultural memory of communities whose identities are inseparable from aquatic life. However, the rivers, wetlands, and ponds that sustain these fish-human relationships are increasingly threatened by environmental contamination resulting from industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, and inadequate environmental management. Understanding how communities perceive these environmental changes is essential for developing effective conservation and public health strategies.

In collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology (ITT) Kharagpur, India, and Michigan Technological University (USA), …

Experimental testing demonstrated reliable wireless data acquisition and successful capture of physiological changes before …

Bayesian Analysis Of Nominal Outcomes With Missing Values Using Multinomial And Multivariate Multinomial Probit Models, Suwash Silwal Jan 2026

Bayesian Analysis Of Nominal Outcomes With Missing Values Using Multinomial And Multivariate Multinomial Probit Models, Suwash Silwal

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Nominal outcomes frequently arise in health sciences, transportation, economics, market research, and related fields. These data often contain missing values, while longitudinal and panel studies generate multiple correlated nominal responses. Bayesian estimation of multinomial probit (MNP) and multivariate multinomial probit (MMNP) models provides a flexible framework for analyzing such data but remains computationally challenging due to high-dimensional likelihood integration, restrictive covariance identification constraints, and poor mixing of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms, particularly in the presence of missing data. This dissertation develops parameter-expanded data augmentation (PX-DA) methods for MNP and MMNP models with missing nominal outcomes by incorporating parameter …

Beyond Receptive Measures: Development And Validation Of The Spatial Grid Drawing Assessment (Sgda) As A Productive Measure Of Spatial Skill, Katrina L. Carlson Jan 2026

Beyond Receptive Measures: Development And Validation Of The Spatial Grid Drawing Assessment (Sgda) As A Productive Measure Of Spatial Skill, Katrina L. Carlson

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Spatial skills are vital in many STEM disciplines, starting at or prior to university training, and often extending throughout one’s career. The most widely used spatial ability measures (e.g., PSVT: R, MRT) rely on what I refer to as receptive skills: examining an object or design, mentally transforming it, and comparing it to given alternatives. But because work in many STEM disciplines also involves productive spatial skill such as drawing, I hypothesize that a productive measure of spatial skill may predict distinct aspects of spatial ability. This research investigates the relationship between traditional receptive Spatial Visualization (SV) assessments, such as …

Targeted And Screening Based Approaches To Analyze Drm Transcriptional Repressor Complex Activity In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Emily Washeleski Jan 2026

Targeted And Screening Based Approaches To Analyze Drm Transcriptional Repressor Complex Activity In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Emily Washeleski

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The molecular machinery that control the eukaryotic cell cycle, specifically the processes that mediate the switch between cellular division or quiescence, are essential for cellular and organismal viability. However, how the same machinery integrates with developmental or differentiation programs is less well understood. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the 8-subunit DRM complex (for Dp, Rb and MuvB), whose subunits belong to the Synthetic Mulitivulva (SynMuv) B class genes, is a central regulator of the cell cycle but also prevents inappropriate cell fate specification. The conserved mammalian DREAM complex (for Dp, Rb, E2F, And MuvB) is best known as a transcriptional repressor …

A greenhouse experiment evaluated the influence of growing media and fertilization on container stock quality, …

Valuing Life And Loss: Genre Analysis Of Insurance Claims Processing In Ghana, Cornelius Fuumaale Suom-Kogle Jan 2026

Valuing Life And Loss: Genre Analysis Of Insurance Claims Processing In Ghana, Cornelius Fuumaale Suom-Kogle

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This thesis draws on theories from rhetorical genre studies (Spinuzzi’s genre ecology and Freadman’s uptake), biopolitics, and the social justice turn in Technical and Professional Communication to examine how decisions are made in the processing of insurance claims. I adopt a qualitative, interpretive approach to analyze one hundred and twelve (112) claims processing examples from Ghana’s insurance industry. The findings indicate that insurance claims processing is a complex communicative system in which institutional power is enacted, negotiated, and, at times, contested. The findings also reveal that insurer-authored genres frequently enact forms of oppression (exploitation, marginalization, and powerlessness) through technical language …

Enhancing Coastal Vulnerability Assessments And Policy Impacts On Socioeconomic And Environmental Equity In Michigan's Great Lakes Communities, Esther N. Acheampong Jan 2026

Enhancing Coastal Vulnerability Assessments And Policy Impacts On Socioeconomic And Environmental Equity In Michigan's Great Lakes Communities, Esther N. Acheampong

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Accelerating shoreline erosion, fluctuating lake levels, and climate-induced hazards are transforming the Great Lakes’ freshwater coasts, exposing the limitations of static and inequitable management frameworks. This dissertation investigates how Michigan’s coastal governance systems produce and manage vulnerability along the Lake Michigan shoreline by integrating geospatial modeling, institutional policy analysis, and environmental justice theory. It argues that both physical processes and institutional designs co-determine patterns of exposure, protection, and equity. The research begins by developing a refined Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) tailored for lacustrine environments, applying it to Muskegon County to assess how shoreline change, armoring, and seasonality influence localized risk. …

Myopia And Eye Disease: From Correlation To Causation, James Loughman, Mark A. Bullimore, Daniel Ian Flitcroft Jan 2026

Myopia And Eye Disease: From Correlation To Causation, James Loughman, Mark A. Bullimore, Daniel Ian Flitcroft

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Myopia is increasingly recognised as a risk factor strongly linked to visual impairment and sight-threatening ocular disease rather than a simple refractive state. The assumption of causality to these secondary effects underpins myopia control and its long-term public health value. This review considers epidemiologic, longitudinal, mechanistic, interventional, natural-experiment, and genetic evidence to evaluate causality based on Bradford Hill's nine criteria: strength, consistency, specificity, temporality, biological gradient, plausibility, coherence, experiment, and analogy. The graded dose-response relationship between myopia and visual impairment has been demonstrated across multiple populations. Similar patterns are shown for a range of myopia-related ocular diseases. Risks for myopic …

Sustainable Development And Faith, Tony Kealy Jan 2026

Sustainable Development And Faith, Tony Kealy

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The contribution of faith-based input to the broader idea of sustainable development has not been widely acknowledged in the traditional sense; however, recent global events suggest it may warrant further exploration. This qualitative study examines how faith-based activities, such as missionary work, have historically and can continue to contribute significantly to the environmental, economic, and human/social aspects of organizational decision-making. The focus is on the Catholic faith, specifically the role played by the Irish-based Medical Missionaries of Mary religious congregation in the mid-to-late twentieth century. An initial literature review was conducted to gather information from various sources to define sustainable …

Predicting Loneliness Among Older Adults In Ireland Using Supervised Machine Learning, Ariadne Chaves Miranda Jan 2026

Predicting Loneliness Among Older Adults In Ireland Using Supervised Machine Learning, Ariadne Chaves Miranda

ICT

Over the last two decades, technology has grown exponentially and has facilitated communication that helps individuals remain connected. However, this has also contributed to social isolation and lack of physical interaction. One consequence of this phenomenon is loneliness, which is understood as an unpleasant subjective state of discrepancy between the desired amount of companionship or emotional support and what is available in the person’s environment (Prohaska and Burholt, 2020). In the European context, Ireland has emerged as the loneliest country in Europe with 20% of its population that have reported feeling lonely most or all the time (Schnepf et al., …

The Role Of Parent Involvement In Enhancing Pediatric Speech And Language Therapy, Katie Lynch Jan 2026

The Role Of Parent Involvement In Enhancing Pediatric Speech And Language Therapy, Katie Lynch

Honors Program Theses

As speech-language pathologists, we provide speech and language therapy for children in a variety of settings. It is crucial that we include a client’s family in therapy because family involvement has been shown to promote generalization of skills learned in therapy to a child’s typical environment. Despite this, various barriers exist for families as they aim to support their child’s speech and language goals. This literature review examines how speech-language pathologists can gain an understanding of these barriers and how they can promote family involvement in pediatric speech and language therapy.

Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart Jan 2026

Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In March of 2025, the environmental group Greenpeace was found liable for nearly $667 million to Energy Transfer, the oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The lawsuit was widely regarded as a SLAPP, or Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, because it weaponized civic torts to infringe upon Greenpeace’s First Amendment rights. The $667 million verdict is an unprecedented figure in SLAPP litigation–it’s enough to bankrupt Greenpeace in the United States and “chill” democratic participation. This thesis used a hybrid blame-renewal crisis narrative framework to analyze Greenpeace’s public response to lawsuits against a backdrop of cultural and political economic …

Obscurity And The Fallacy Of No Privacy In Public Information, Woodrow Hartzog Jan 2026

Obscurity And The Fallacy Of No Privacy In Public Information, Woodrow Hartzog

Faculty Scholarship

The main thesis of this chapter is that because there are so many different possible interpretations of ‘public information’, the concept cannot be used to justify data practices and surveillance without first articulating a more precise meaning that recognises what is at stake. By disposing of the myth that there is an objective and dispassionate concept of public information, judges and lawmakers can clear the way for information rules based on overt value choices. In short, if the concept of ‘public’ is going to shape people’s social and legal obligations, its meaning and neutrality should not be assumed.

My argument …

The “Multi-Normative” Biological Weapons Convention: A Study Of The 2022 Article V Meeting In Geneva, Robert Lawless Jan 2026

The “Multi-Normative” Biological Weapons Convention: A Study Of The 2022 Article V Meeting In Geneva, Robert Lawless

Emory International Law Review

In September 2022, States parties to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) held a Formal Consultative Meeting in Geneva pursuant to Article V of the Convention, following Russia’s allegations that the United States and Ukraine had developed biological weapons in violation of BWC prohibitions. Although largely overlooked in public discourse, the Geneva meeting provides a revealing example of the BWC in practice. This article examines the Geneva meeting to assess the Convention’s normative role in contemporary international relations. It argues that States parties reaffirmed their commitment to the BWC’s core prohibition against the hostile use of biological agents against humans. Moreover, …

Consensus Decision-Making: Decision-Making Model Of Chinese Constitutional Review, Songfeng Li Jan 2026

Consensus Decision-Making: Decision-Making Model Of Chinese Constitutional Review, Songfeng Li

Emory International Law Review

The judgment model of constitutional review in China adopts a consensus-based judgment model involving multiple stakeholders, including review authorities, drafting authorities, relevant interest parties, and the general public. Through multi-level, multi-stage, and multi-round interactive communication and negotiation, consensus is reached on constitutional judgments. This judgment model aligns with the power division political system under the NPC system, reflecting the institutional concept of people’s sovereignty and the cultural foundation of valuing harmony. It is also a result of the decentralization of constitutional review authority leading to insufficient power for actual reviewers, the parallel nature of factual and normative judgments in constitutional …

Treating Social Media Corporations As Quasi-State Actors To Address The Use Of Artificial Intelligence In Content Moderation, Michael T. Tiu Jr. Jan 2026

Treating Social Media Corporations As Quasi-State Actors To Address The Use Of Artificial Intelligence In Content Moderation, Michael T. Tiu Jr.

Emory International Law Review

Corporations have become powerful actors in the international system. They have the potential to disrupt the protection of values that states have been performing for decades. One of these values–freedom of expression–has been the recipient of impact of emerging technologies owned by corporations. Social media platforms have become new governors of expression. Content moderation rules cause adverse impacts on freedom of expression. The vagueness of certain criteria and the inconsistency of their application have led to censorship of speech which would have been protected offline. This situation is exacerbated by the use of artificial intelligence in content moderation, owing to …
