Sap Is Required For The Development Of Innate Phenotype In H2-M3-Restricted Cd8+ T Cells, Yaw Bediako, Yao Bian, Hong Zhang, Hoonsik Cho

H2-M3-restricted T cells have a preactivated surface phenotype, rapidly expand, and produce cytokines upon stimulation, and, as such, are classified as innate T cells. Unlike most innate T cells, M3-restricted T cells also express CD8ab coreceptors and a diverse TCR repertoire: hallmarks of conventional MHC Ia-restricted CD8+ T cells. Although invariant NKT cells are also innate T cells, they are selected exclusively on hematopoietic cells (HC), whereas M3-restricted T cells can be selected on either hematopoietic or thymic epithelial cells. Moreover, their phenotypes differ depending on what cells mediate their selection. Although there is a clear correlation between selection on …

Colonia Population Estimation, Daren Ruiz
Colonia Population Estimation, Daren Ruiz
BBER Publications
This slide presentation gives a brief overview and update of a Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) project funded by the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA) to estimate the population of colonias in southern New Mexico. Colonias are small, poor communities with substandard infrastructure and typically have a Hispanic or immigrant population. Colonias are found in the four states bordering Mexico; BBER is using U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development colonia guidelines by limiting its survey to those located within a 150-mile radius of the Mexican border. A study done by New Mexico State University in 2000 …

Soybean Allergy: Effect Of Genetic Modification (Gm), Heat And Enzymatic Treatment On Overall Allergenicity, Rakhi Panda
Soybean Allergy: Effect Of Genetic Modification (Gm), Heat And Enzymatic Treatment On Overall Allergenicity, Rakhi Panda
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Soybean allergy affects approximately 0.4% of children worldwide. At least 16 proteins in soybean bind IgE from some soybean allergic subjects. Although the relative allergenic importance and abundance of individual proteins in soybean varieties is not understood, the allergenicity assessment guideline for the safety of genetically modified (GM) food crops (Codex, 2003) includes assessing potential increases in expression of endogenous allergens in an allergenic crop like soybeans that might be due to insertion of the new DNA. The studies described in this dissertation included comparison of binding of IgE from individual soybean allergic subjects to proteins in three transgenic soybean …

Escherichia Coli-Mediated Impairment Of Ureteric Contractility Is Uropathogenic E. Coli Specific., Rachel V. Floyd, Mathew Upton, Scott J. Hultgren, Susan Wray, Theodor V. Burdyga, Craig Winstanley
School of Biomedical Sciences
BACKGROUND: Ureters are fundamental for keeping kidneys free from uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), but we have shown that 2 strains (J96 and 536) can subvert this role and reduce ureteric contractility. To determine whether this is (1) a widespread feature of UPEC, (2) exhibited only by UPEC, and (3) dependent upon type 1 fimbriae, we analyzed strains representing epidemiologically important multilocus sequence types ST131, ST73, and ST95 and non-UPEC E. coli. METHODS: Contractility and calcium transients in intact rat ureters were compared between strains. Mannose and fim mutants were used to investigate the role of type 1 fimbriae. RESULTS: Non-UPEC …
Building A Statistical Model For Predicting Cancer Genes, Ivan P. Gorlov, Christopher J. Logothetis, Shenying Fang, Olga Y. Gorlova, Christopher Amos
Building A Statistical Model For Predicting Cancer Genes, Ivan P. Gorlov, Christopher J. Logothetis, Shenying Fang, Olga Y. Gorlova, Christopher Amos
Dartmouth Scholarship
More than 400 cancer genes have been identified in the human genome. The list is not yet complete. Statistical models predicting cancer genes may help with identification of novel cancer gene candidates. We used known prostate cancer (PCa) genes (identified through KnowledgeNet) as a training set to build a binary logistic regression model identifying PCa genes. Internal and external validation of the model was conducted using a validation set (also from KnowledgeNet), permutations, and external data on genes with recurrent prostate tumor mutations. We evaluated a set of 33 gene characteristics as predictors. Sixteen of the original 33 predictors were …
Systemic Uncertainty: An Examination Of Its Causes And Repercussions, W. Soren Kreider Iv
Systemic Uncertainty: An Examination Of Its Causes And Repercussions, W. Soren Kreider Iv
Undergraduate Economic Review
This paper examines the nature of systemic uncertainty and the character of public policy which causes it by analyzing two time periods as case studies of how systemic uncertainty is generated by public policy choices. I analyze financial data and polling data for evidence of systemic uncertainty to identify the form of public policy and political leadership which results in the occurrence of uncertainty. My findings suggest that systemic uncertainty is generated by a lack of commitment to the protection of private property and/or a willingness to arbitrarily implement changes to the tax and regulatory structure in the future.

Transforming Growth Factor Alpha (Tgfα) Regulates Granulosa Cell Tumor (Gct) Cell Proliferation And Migration Through Activation Of Multiple Pathways., Cheng Wang, Xiangmin Lv, Chao Jiang, Crystal M. Cordes, Lan Fu, Subodh M. Lele, John S. Davis
Journal Articles: Obstetrics & Gynecology
Granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) are the most common ovarian estrogen producing tumors, leading to symptoms of excessive estrogen such as endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial adenocarcinoma. These tumors have malignant potential and often recur. The etiology of GCT is unknown. TGFα is a potent mitogen for many different cells. However, its function in GCT initiation, progression and metastasis has not been determined. The present study aims to determine whether TGFα plays a role in the growth of GCT cells. KGN cells, which are derived from an invasive GCT and have many features of normal granulosa cells, were used as the cellular …

Immune Correlates Of Aging In Outdoor-Housed Captive Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Elizabeth S. Didier, Chie Sugimoto, Lisa C. Bowers, Imtiaz A. Khan, Marcelo J. Kuroda
Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications
Background
Questions remain about whether inflammation is a cause, consequence, or coincidence of aging. The purpose of this study was to define baseline immunological characteristics from blood to develop a model in rhesus macaques that could be used to address the relationship between inflammation and aging. Hematology, flow cytometry, clinical chemistry, and multiplex cytokine/chemokine analyses were performed on a group of 101 outdoor-housed captive rhesus macaques ranging from 2 to 24 years of age, approximately equivalent to 8 to 77 years of age in humans.
Results
These results extend earlier reports correlating changes in lymphocyte subpopulations and cytokines/chemokines with increasing …
