Subsistence In The Shrinking Forest: Native And Euro-American Practice In 19th-Century Connecticut, William A. Farley
Subsistence In The Shrinking Forest: Native And Euro-American Practice In 19th-Century Connecticut, William A. Farley
Graduate Masters Theses
Southeastern Connecticut in the 19th century represented a setting in which Native Americans living on reservations were residing in close proximity to Euro-American communities. The Mashantucket Pequot, an indigenous group who in the 19th century resided on a state-overseen reservation, and their Euro-American neighbors both utilized local and regional resources in order to achieve their subsistence goals. This thesis seeks to explore the differences and similarities of the subsistence practices employed by these two groups. It further seeks to examine the centrality of forest landscapes to both Mashantucket and Euro-American subsistence, and to interpret the importance of the reservation to …

"She Of Gentle Manners": An Examination Of The Widow Pomeroy's Table And Tea Wares And The Emerging Domestic Sphere In Kinderhook, New York, Megan E. Sullivan
Graduate Masters Theses
Following the American Revolution, the new gender ideologies of Republican Motherhood and the Cult of Domesticity gained in popularity that associated men with the public sphere and relegated women to the private domestic sphere. Women were now tasked with the important job of raising the future citizens of the fledgling Republic. The quality of family and home life took on extra importance, and the elaboration of meals and the ceramics used in these rituals changed accordingly. This thesis analyzes the table and tea wares from an archaeological assemblage located in upstate New York that dates to the turn of the …

Extension's Evolving Alignment Of Programs Serving Families And Youth: Organizational Change And Its Implications, Marc T. Braverman, Nancy K. Franz, Roger A. Rennekamp
Extension's Evolving Alignment Of Programs Serving Families And Youth: Organizational Change And Its Implications, Marc T. Braverman, Nancy K. Franz, Roger A. Rennekamp
Journal of Extension
Extension is experiencing a trend toward closer alignment of its programs serving families and youth, notably Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H Youth Development. Projects are more multidisciplinary and comprehensive than in the past, and, in many states, FCS and 4-HYD are also becoming more administratively integrated. Several reasons for this shift are recent developments in social science intervention theory, Extension budget reductions, and land-grant universities' long-term organizational strategies. We discuss implications for Extension faculty and the need to track and understand the restructuring process. Overall, the emphasis on collaboration and comprehensiveness provide opportunities for more effective Extension programming.

Global 4-H Network: Laying The Groundwork For Global Extension Opportunities, Jennifer Major, Rhonda Miller
Journal of Extension
A descriptive study examining 4-H programs in Africa, Asia, and Europe was conducted to provide understanding and direction in the establishment of a Global 4-H Network. Information regarding structure, organizational support, funding, and programming areas was gathered. Programs varied greatly by country, and many partnered with other 4-H organizations around the world. Few content areas offered by the surveyed countries aligned with their major agricultural commodities, even though content areas were available in the United States 4-H Program. The Global 4-H Network has the potential to fill these holes and provide additional opportunities to global programs.

Engaging In Learning Together: A Theory Of Undergraduate Nursing Students’ Political Learning, Pamela Marie Gehrke
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Health care and nursing are political, and nurses need to be at policy decision-making tables. Graduate nursing education prepares nurses for policy roles, but little research exists about what political and policy education is taught to undergraduate nursing students or how they learn the concepts, skills, and disposition for political and policy work. Nurses need education for civic engagement and political advocacy in their undergraduate professional education. A study was done to learn how undergraduate nursing students made sense of civic engagement concepts like political advocacy and policy making in an online blended, required Policy, Power & Voice course in …

Testing, Analysis, And Model Verification Of Miniature Linear Permanent Magnet Generators, Michael Ray Rippee
Testing, Analysis, And Model Verification Of Miniature Linear Permanent Magnet Generators, Michael Ray Rippee
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The military has become increasingly dependent on mobile electronic equipment to ensure success and safety of soldiers in remote locations. To operate the electronics, soldiers must carry batteries that can weigh up to 12kg (26.5lb). To decrease the load soldiers must carry, a backpack with an internal linear electric generator has been proposed to provide portable power for soldiers on foot. In designing a generator for this purpose, a simulation was developed to predict the power generation capacity of linear permanent magnet generators. This thesis presents work done to experimentally verify the theoretical simulation with a desired accuracy of 20%. …
An (In)Active Pursuit Of Healing, Sara Roik
An (In)Active Pursuit Of Healing, Sara Roik
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis seeks to raise a discussion and reflection of the current state of psychiatry in an intensely globalized world. As a result of globalization, many individuals have a lack of enculturation and a shallow connection to tradition. I take both a subjective and objective approach to understand how this has an effect on an individual’s perceptions and efficacy of treatment as many healing methods come to coexist. The subjective will be explored through my own reactions to treatment methods after becoming diagnosed with an anxiety disorder that leads to periodic states of depression. The objective will focus on two …
Congestion Avoidance Energy Efficient Mac Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Alexander Sundling
Congestion Avoidance Energy Efficient Mac Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Alexander Sundling
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs) are generally energy-constrained and resource-constrained. When multiple simultaneous events occur in densely deployed WSNs, nodes near the base station can become congested, decreasing the network performance. Additionally, multiple nodes may sense an event leading to spatially-correlated contention, further increasing congestion. In order to mitigate the effects of congestion near the base station, an energy-efficient Media Access Control (MAC) protocol that can handle multiple simultaneous events and spatially-correlated contention is needed. Energy efficiency is important and can be achieved using duty cycles but they could degrade the network performance in terms of latency. Existing protocols either provide …
Congestion Mitigation By Traffic Dispersion In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sreekanth Yalamanchili
Congestion Mitigation By Traffic Dispersion In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sreekanth Yalamanchili
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are event-based systems that rely on the collective effort of several sensor nodes. When all nodes in an area sense an event and transmit that data, it causes sudden traffic bursts, which are spatially-correlated and lead to network congestion. Congestion can cause an increase in the amount of data loss, energy consumption, delay data transmission, and hinder network performance. To improve performance of event-driven applications, there arises a need for protocols that can reduce congestion and energy consumption. Existing protocols for sensing multiple events either handle congestion control or spatially-correlated contention, but not both, which can …
Nurses’ Perceptions Of The Support Needs Of Women Experiencing A Crisis Pregnancy, Kristyn Dyson
Nurses’ Perceptions Of The Support Needs Of Women Experiencing A Crisis Pregnancy, Kristyn Dyson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Background: In the United States, one half of all pregnancies are unintended. Research suggests that many women make a decision about their pregnancy immediately, taking action very quickly without any form of options counseling. Women oftentimes do not conceptualize their pregnancy as a scenario involving three alternative outcomes. Research has shown that when in a state of crisis, the decision-making process is diminished and the individual becomes vulnerable. Additionally, when making decisions in the absence of adequate social support, negative health outcomes can result.
Objectives: To explore nurses’ perceptions of the social support needs of women experiencing a crisis …
Understanding The Tradeoff Between Safety And Food Quality In A Mammalian Herbivore Specialist, The Pygmy Rabbit, Jamie Lyn Utz
Understanding The Tradeoff Between Safety And Food Quality In A Mammalian Herbivore Specialist, The Pygmy Rabbit, Jamie Lyn Utz
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Conserving a sensitive animal species requires understanding the simultaneous tradeoffs between food and shelter within a landscape. Most management approaches only consider single factors like percent cover at landscape spatial scales. Quantifying the synergy between cover and food quality at a scale relevant to a foraging animal could better reveal the forces that shape habitat use. To better understand habitat use components, I investigated tradeoffs between predation risk and diet quality in a sagebrush endemic, the pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis). This species is a rare example of a specialist herbivore that relies almost entirely on sagebrush for cover …
