Piety And Profession: Simon Greenleaf And The Case Of The Stillborn Bowdoin Law School, 1850–1861, Alfred S. Konefsky
Journal Articles
In 1850, Bowdoin College turned to former Harvard professor Simon Greenleaf when it sought to establish a law school. Although the school did not materialize, Greenleaf wrote a remarkable report that reveals anxieties about the profession, competing visions of legal education, and controversies over the meaning of the science of law in antebellum New England.

Ferlinghetti On Trial: The Howl Court Case And Juvenile Delinquency, Joel E. Black
Journal Articles
In spring 1957 the Juvenile Division of the San Francisco Police Department seized copies of Howl and charged the poem's publisher, Lawrence Felinghetti, with obscenity. Tried in summer 1957 and defended by the American Civil Liberties Union, Ferlinghetti was exonerated by a District Court judge. Scholars typically place the Howl trial at the beginning of a cultural and social revolution that flourished in the 1960s or place it amid the personal lives and rebellions of the actors composing the Beat Generation. However, these treatments do not fully consider the ways the prosecution reflected trends in law, shaped debates over juvenile …

Optimum Multi-Hop Transmission Strategies For Energy Constrained Wireless Sensor Networks, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Optimum Multi-Hop Transmission Strategies For Energy Constrained Wireless Sensor Networks, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents optimum multi-hop transmission strategies (MHTS) for energy constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Nodes in a multi-hop WSN need to transmit their own information and to relay each other's information to a base station (BS), and there are usually multiple available paths between a node and the BS. the optimum MHTS derived in this paper answers three questions: 1) how should a node divide its limited energy between the transmission of the self-information and the relay-information? 2) whether a single path or a combination of multiple paths should be used to route the information from a node to …

Zheng Classification In Traditional Chinese Medicine Based On Modified Specular-Free Tongue Images, Ratchadaporn Kanawong, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi, Jun Yu, Dong Xu, Shao Li, Ye Duan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners usually observe the color and coating of a patient's tongue to determine ZHENG (such as Cold or Hot ZHENG) and to diagnose different stomach disorders including gastritis. In our previous work, we explored new modalities for clinical characterization of ZHENG in gastritis patients via tongue image analysis using various supervised machine-learning algorithms. We proposed a system that learns from the clinical practitioner's subjective data how to classify a patients health status by extracting meaningful features from tongue images based on color-space models. In this paper, we propose an enhancement to the ZHENG classification system: a coating …

Writing Centers And Students With Disabilities: The User-Centered Approach, Participatory Design, And Empirical Research As Collaborative Methodologies, Allen Brizee, Morgan Sousa, Dana Driscoll Phd
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Graduate Student Publications
This article discusses issues of accessibility and how user-centered and participatory approaches can inform empirical research to guide the Universal Design of virtual spaces and influence writing center efforts for students with disabilities. Because this article describes how to integrate usability/accessibility testing for online and in-person services, it can work as a model for writing centers struggling with the challenges of serving students with disabilities. Toward this end, the article discusses two generations of usability testing on a large, well-established online writing lab (the Purdue OWL), as well as the collaborative projects that emerged between the usability team and campus …
Opportunity Lost: Mismanagment Of The Closeout Phase Of Construction Projects, Jared Rogers
Opportunity Lost: Mismanagment Of The Closeout Phase Of Construction Projects, Jared Rogers
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
In nearly every construction project, completing the project on time is one of the most critical things for everyone involved. Late project completion causes a wide variety of complications for the entire project team. This paper seeks to identify some of the causes for delay in the last phase of construction projects: the closeout phase.
Original research was conducted to gather input from construction industry professionals about their experiences with the closeout phase of projects. Factors perceived to cause closeout delay were identified, along with perceptions about the closeout performance of survey participant’s firms. The research validated the study’s premise …

A United States interagency avian influenza surveillance plan was initiated in 2006 for early detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIV) in wild birds. The plan included a variety of wild bird sampling strategies including the testing of fecal samples from aquatic areas throughout the United States from April 2006 through December 2007. Although HPAIV was not detected through this surveillance effort we were able to obtain 759 fecal samples that were positive for low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV). We used 136 DNA sequences obtained from these samples along with samples from a public influenza sequence database for …

Evaluations of the local effects of global change are often confounded by the interactions of natural and anthropogenic factors that overshadow the effects of climate changes on ecosystems. Long-term watershed and natural elevation gradient studies at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and in the surrounding region show surprising results demonstrating the effects of climate change on hydrologic variables (e.g., evapotranspiration, streamflow, soil moisture); the importance of changes in phenology on water, carbon, and nitrogen fluxes during critical seasonal transition periods; winter climate change effects on plant and animal community composition and ecosystem services; and the effects of anthropogenic disturbances and …

Synthesis And Co2/Ch4 Separation Performance Of Bio-Mof-1 Membranes., Joseph Allen Bohrman 1988-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The separation of carbon dioxide from natural gas is of great interest from the environmental and energy perspective, respectively. From the environmental point of view, capturing CO2 effectively from power plants can have a positive impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. From the energy point of view, CO2 is an undesirable impurity in natural gas wells, with concentrations as high as 70%. Membrane technology can play a major role in making natural gas purification processes economically feasible. A novel membrane composed of Metal-organic-framework material Zn8(Ad)4(BPDC)6O 2Me2NH2 (Bio-MOF-1) was designed and created to effectively separate CO2/CH4 gas mixtures. The crystalline structure, …

Egypt's Police State In The Work Of Idris And Mahfouz, David F. Dimeo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Egypt's Police State in the Work of Idris and Mahfouz" David F. DiMeo examines how two leading twentieth-century authors of politically committed fiction addressed an angry generation's confrontations with former members of the oppressive state police apparatus. Yusuf Idris's The Black Policeman (1962) and Najib Mahfouz's al-Karnak (1974) remain particularly relevant as today's Egyptian activists confront the vestiges of the former regime's security forces. Using Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of the carnival as a paradigm for analysis, DiMeo examines how both texts present sharp contrasts between hollow quests for public revenge through purges and a genuine overturning of …
