Huntington, New York's Sex Offender Policy And The Intrastate Right To Travel, James Tierney Dec 2012

Huntington, New York's Sex Offender Policy And The Intrastate Right To Travel, James Tierney

Touro Law Review

Sex offenders are among the most loathed and detested members of our society. Over the past fifteen years, communities have zealously passed laws restricting the rights of sex offenders. These laws mandate that sex offenders register with authorities and severely limit where sex offenders may reside. This legislation is designed to foster an important goal: to protect the health and safety of children from possible recidivism from sex offenders. In 2007, the Town Board of Huntington, New York, passed a law barring sex offenders from renting or leasing accessory apartments within the Town. The health and safety of the town's …

The (In)Admissibility Of False Confession Expert Testimony, David A. Perez Dec 2012

The (In)Admissibility Of False Confession Expert Testimony, David A. Perez

Touro Law Review

This Comment discusses the relationship between police interrogation tactics and false confessions in order to address the admissibility of false confession expert testimony, a question that has traditionally been left to the discretion of the trial judge. The current literature-indeed, the prevailing consensus-argues for drastic changes to police interrogation practices to prevent false confessions and, in combination with such changes, demands that expert testimony on false confessions be admitted in criminal trials. Despite the relative unanimity in the literature, state and federal courts remain bitterly divided on the question of admissibility of false confession expert testimony. Each decision in this …

The Illuminating Bud: A Performer's Analysis Of Elizabeth Maconchy's Five Sketches For Viola, Yun Young Lim Dec 2012

The Illuminating Bud: A Performer's Analysis Of Elizabeth Maconchy's Five Sketches For Viola, Yun Young Lim

Open Access Dissertations

This essay examines Elizabeth Maconchy’s Five Sketches for Viola, a solo viola work by one of the greatest female British composers of the twentieth century and an important recent contribution to the viola literature. Following an investigation of Maconchy’s musical style, identifying relevant idioms present in the work, the author provides suggestions for the performer’s preparation and an interpretative and theoretical framework for the composition. The background of the piece was accumulated through interviews with the commissioner of the work, Nicholas Logie, and Philip Dukes, who featured the work on his debut disc. “Illuminating bud” is the condition of a …

Annual Glyphosate Treatments Alter Growth Of Unaffected Bentgrass ( Agrostis ) Weeds And Plant Community Composition, Collin W. Ahrens, Carol A. Auer Dec 2012

Annual Glyphosate Treatments Alter Growth Of Unaffected Bentgrass ( Agrostis ) Weeds And Plant Community Composition, Collin W. Ahrens, Carol A. Auer

Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles

Herbicide resistance is becoming more common in weed ecotypes and crop species including turfgrasses, but current gaps in knowledge limit predictive ecological risk assessments and risk management plans. This project examined the effect of annual glyphosate applications on the vegetative growth and reproductive potential of two weedy bentgrasses, creeping bentgrass (CB) and redtop (RT), where the glyphosate resistance (GR) trait was mimicked by covering the bentgrass plants during glyphosate application. Five field plots were studied in habitats commonly inhabited by weedy bentgrasses including an agricultural hayfield, natural meadow, and wasteland. Results showed that annual glyphosate treatment improved bentgrass survivorship, vegetative …

Proliferation Of Genetically Modified Human Cells On Electrospun Nanofiber Scaffolds., Mandula Borjigin, Bryan Strouse, Rohina A. Niamat, Pawel Bialk, Chris Eskridge, Jingwei Xie, Eric B. Kmiec

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Gene editing is a process by which single base mutations can be corrected, in the context of the chromosome, using single-stranded oligodeoxynucleotides (ssODNs). The survival and proliferation of the corrected cells bearing modified genes, however, are impeded by a phenomenon known as reduced proliferation phenotype (RPP); this is a barrier to practical implementation. To overcome the RPP problem, we utilized nanofiber scaffolds as templates on which modified cells were allowed to recover, grow, and expand after gene editing. Here, we present evidence that some HCT116-19, bearing an integrated, mutated enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) gene and corrected by gene editing, …

Multiplex Networks And Interest Group Influence Reputation: An Exponential Random Graph Model, Michael T. Heaney Dec 2012

Multiplex Networks And Interest Group Influence Reputation: An Exponential Random Graph Model, Michael T. Heaney

Working Papers

Interest groups struggle to build reputations as influential actors in the policy process and to discern the influence exercised by others. This study conceptualizes influence reputation as a relational variable that varies locally throughout a network. Drawing upon interviews with 168 interest group representatives in the United States health policy domain, this research examines the effects of multiplex networks of communication, coalitions, and issues on influence reputation. Using an exponential random graph model (ERGM), the analysis demonstrates that multiple roles of confidant, collaborator, and issue advocate affect how group representatives understand the influence of those with whom they are tied, …

Increasing Subjective Client Agency For Psychotherapy At A Veterans Administration Hospital: A Process-Outcome Study, Rachel A. Coleman Dec 2012

Increasing Subjective Client Agency For Psychotherapy At A Veterans Administration Hospital: A Process-Outcome Study, Rachel A. Coleman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Subjective client agency, defined as client expectations for actively influencing therapy process and outcome, is hypothesized to contribute to psychotherapy process and outcome. Previous work has linked higher degrees of subjective client agency to more positive client ratings of the therapeutic working alliance, while results for outcome studies are mostly non-significant. The current project extended the limited body of research in this area by (a) examining associations for subjective client agency at the outset of group therapy with ratings of group process, therapeutic alliance and treatment outcome for 84 clients at a Veterans Administration outpatient clinic, and (b) attempting to …

Recessions Accelerate Trend Of Wives As Breadwinners, Kristin Smith Dec 2012

Recessions Accelerate Trend Of Wives As Breadwinners, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

This brief investigates the increased role employed wives played in family economic stability prior to, during, and in the two years after the Great Recession, and makes comparisons to the 1990-1991 and 2001 recessions. Author Kristin Smith reports that employed wives’ contribution to total family earnings jumped to 47 percent in 2009 from 45 percent in 2008—the largest single-year increase during the past twenty-three years—and has held steady at 47 percent in 2010 and 2011. Recessions substantially accelerate the trend of increased reliance on wives’ earnings. In all three recessions since 1988, annual increases in wives’ share of total family …
