Enclaves And Entrepreneurial Success, Charles Braymen, Florence Neymotin Oct 2012

Enclaves And Entrepreneurial Success, Charles Braymen, Florence Neymotin

HCBE Faculty Presentations

We examined the effect of immigrant and ethnic enclaves on the success of entrepreneurial ventures as measured by firm profits and viability. Data on entrepreneurs and their new firms were provided byt eh kauffman Foundation and covered the years 2004-2008. These firm-level data were linked to Census 2000 Summary Files 3 and 4 at the ZIP Code level of measurement, and were used to empirically investigate the effect of enclaves. Our use of a selection correction allowed us to ground our analysis in a casual framework. We found a statistically significant negative effect of immigrant representation in an area on …

Thinking In Islands; The Portuguese Perception Of The Indonesian Archipelago And Particularly Of Sunda In Early Texts And Charts, Svann Langguth Oct 2012

Thinking In Islands; The Portuguese Perception Of The Indonesian Archipelago And Particularly Of Sunda In Early Texts And Charts, Svann Langguth

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article discusses various early sources on the Indonesian archipelago. It starts with the status of knowledge before the first voyage of the Portuguese to the Moluccas from accounts of travellers to insular Southeast Asia in the Middle Ages and the picture on world maps European cartographers produced. Comparing that view with text sources and the resulting geographic material of the first expeditions by the Portuguese provides an insight into contemporary mechanisms of knowledge transfer. Certain effects can be traced and are repeated on different levels of access to the original facts mainly because most maps were drawn up in …

State-Of-The-Art In The Documentation Of The Papuan Languages Of Timor, Alor, Pantar, And Kisar; A Bibliography, Antoinette Schapper, Juliette Huber

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Timor-Alor-Pantar (TAP) language family has a special place in South-East Asian linguistics; its members make up the western extreme of the Papuan language sphere. Along with an exhaustive bibliography of works on the TAP languages, this paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the ongoing documentation of the TAP language family in terms of both linguistic description and (pre-)historical reconstruction. The paper concludes with a consideration of the prospects for future studies of the TAP languages.

Local Languages, Local Malay, And Bahasa Indonesia; A Case Study From North Maluku, John Bowden Oct 2012

Local Languages, Local Malay, And Bahasa Indonesia; A Case Study From North Maluku, John Bowden

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Many small languages from eastern Indonesia are threatened with extinction. While it is often assumed that 'Indonesian' is replacing the lost languages, in reality, local languages are being replaced by local Malay. In this paper I review some of the reasons for this in North Maluku. I review the directional system in North Maluku Malay and argue that features like the directionals allow those giving up local languages to retain a sense of local linguistic identity. Retaining such an identity makes it easier to abandon local languages than would be the case if people were switching to 'standard' Indonesian.

The Urban Anthropologist As Flâneur; The Symbolic Pattern Of Indonesian Cities, Peter J.M. Nas Oct 2012

The Urban Anthropologist As Flâneur; The Symbolic Pattern Of Indonesian Cities, Peter J.M. Nas

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Cities are places full of symbols. In the past decades, Indonesian cities have become the cradle of urban symbolism studies. In this article, the author presents the results of these studies. The cities researched differ tremendously, ranging from the national capital to provincial capitals and small towns; some of them, such as Jakarta, are purely colonial in origin, while others are more or less traditional in character. Some of them have a top-down symbolic structure, largely the product of government activities, while others have symbolic configurations which have a more grassroots character and are based in the religious domain. The …

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

The early Eocene (~55 to 50 Ma) is a time period which has been explored in a large number of modelling and data studies. Here, using an ensemble of previously published model results, making up "EoMIP" – the Eocene Modelling Intercomparison Project – and syntheses of early Eocene terrestrial and sea surface temperature data, we present a self-consistent inter-model and model–data comparison. This shows that the previous modelling studies exhibit a very wide inter-model variability, but that at high CO2, there is good agreement between models and data for this period, particularly if possible seasonal biases in some of the …

A Key Challenge In Global Hrm: Adding New Insights To Existing Expatriate Spouse Adjustment Models, Ritu Gupta, Pratyush Banerjee, Jighyasu Gaur Oct 2012

A Key Challenge In Global Hrm: Adding New Insights To Existing Expatriate Spouse Adjustment Models, Ritu Gupta, Pratyush Banerjee, Jighyasu Gaur

The Qualitative Report

This study is an attempt to strengthen the existing knowledge about factors affecting the adjustment process of the trailing expatriate spouse and the subsequent impact of any maladjustment or expatriate failure. We conducted a qualitative enquiry using grounded theory methodology with 26 Indian spouses who had to deal with their partner’s expatriate assignment relocation. The open and axial coding techniques and the process of theoretical sampling are discussed at length. Our investigation reveals the recurrence of several factors earlier studied in previous models such as cultural novelty, family and peer support, the organization’s support and the spouse’s personality. Additionally, we …

Dancing The Orishas: Exporting A Constructed Form Of Popular Culture From Havana To Arcata, Oluyinka Akinjiola

Northeast Popular Culture Association

“Dancing the Orishas: Exporting a Constructed Form of Popular Culture from Havana to Arcata”

The staged sacred and social dances of the Afro-Cuban community were chosen to represent the new “revolutionary identity” of Cuba. Maya J. Berry writes about this phenomenon in her essay, “From ‘Ritual’ to ‘Repertory’: Dancing to the Time of the Nation” in the Afro-Hispanic Review. This paper builds on that work.

First, it defines a bodily archives a performed identity. Constructed by the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba (CFN), Compania Raices Profundas, Cutumba and Ballet Folklorico Afro-Cubano, this archives created the revolutionary identity. Through these dance …

Proclaiming Emancipation, University Of Michigan Law School, William L. Clements Library, Martha S. Jones Oct 2012

Proclaiming Emancipation, University Of Michigan Law School, William L. Clements Library, Martha S. Jones

Event Materials

Program for Proclaiming Emancipation, held October 15 2012 - February 18 2013. This was a combination exhibit and symposium. Martha S. Jones and Clayton Lewis were Curators.

As we approach the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, commemorations can be a site for complex and nuanced reflections. They can also sanitize a messy past, making it palatable for popular consumption. Proclaiming Emancipation confronts myths with history. Oftentimes competing voices proclaim that no longer does Proclamation stand as an exceptional moment from the U.S. past. Instead, we understand January 1, 1863 as being situated on a timeline that stretches from …

A Survey Of Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) Of Prince Of Wales Island, Alaska; Combining Morphological And Dna Barcode Identification Techniques, Jozef Slowik, Gergin A. Blagoev Oct 2012

A Survey Of Spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) Of Prince Of Wales Island, Alaska; Combining Morphological And Dna Barcode Identification Techniques, Jozef Slowik, Gergin A. Blagoev

Insecta Mundi

Surveys during the summer of 2004 and August 2009 on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, USA resulted in collection of 1064 adult spiders representing 84 species. Barcoding of spiders collected in 2009 resulted in DNA barcode data for 212 specimens representing 63 species. DNA barcode data were then used to facilitate the identification of otherwise unidentifiable juvenile and female specimens as well as to investigate phylogenetically four lineages with large branch lengths between specimens. Using morphological and DNA barcode identifications provided a more complete list of identified specimens than was possible using morphological data alone.

Water: Conserving Our Most Precious Resource, John Holmes Gcvo, Kbe, Cmg Oct 2012

Water: Conserving Our Most Precious Resource, John Holmes Gcvo, Kbe, Cmg

Reports (USI)

This was a thoughtful discussion on a vital and still neglected issue. While there was enough fresh water in the world overall, its distribution did not match that of the global population. Climate change, continuing population growth, urbanisation and altered dietary habits were all exacerbating existing problems of fresh water availability. But there was little new action at national or international level, though local and private sector decisions were making a difference in some places. In the end we might have to take the water to the people rather than expecting the people to go to the water, as had …
