Framing Terrorism: How The Tampa Tribune And Tampa Bay Times Portrayed Sami Al‐Arian In 2001, Wendy Biddlecombe

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

This study examines the framing of Sami Al‐Arian in 2001 by the local, mainstream Tampa Bay press, and compares this portrayal to the outcome of Al‐ Arian’s 2005 trial. In the weeks after the 9/11 attacks, both the Tampa Tribune and Tampa Bay Times covered Al‐Arian in a negative and stereotypical manner, in sharp contrast with the outcome of a 2005 trial that acquitted Al‐Arian of the most serious charges of aiding known terrorists. The theoretical base of this paper is framing, stereotype, and the social construction of reality, and finds the way the press portrayed Al‐Arian had a direct …

Applicability And Estimation Of Error For Determination Of Hydraulic Conductivity Values Based Upon Traditional Aquifer Test Methods For 2-D Groundwater Modeling, Timothy W. Freed Sr. Oct 2012

Applicability And Estimation Of Error For Determination Of Hydraulic Conductivity Values Based Upon Traditional Aquifer Test Methods For 2-D Groundwater Modeling, Timothy W. Freed Sr.

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Theis method and its derivative Cooper-Jacob method are commonly used for determining hydraulic conductivity (K) for aquifer studies using two-dimensional (2-D) groundwater modeling. Theis and derivative equations assume isotropic, homogeneous aquifers and horizontal flow. In nature, saturated permeable layers of an aquifer are often separated by less permeable layers or lenses, which commonly have K's that are lower by several orders of magnitude. The presence of such geologic features induces vertical flow during aquifer tests violating assumptions for Theis based methods. This study assesses the appropriateness and error of using Theis based equations to determine K for use in …

Predictors Of Business Return In New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina, Nina S.N. Lam, Helbert Arenas, Kelley Pace, James Lesage, Richard Campanella Oct 2012

Predictors Of Business Return In New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina, Nina S.N. Lam, Helbert Arenas, Kelley Pace, James Lesage, Richard Campanella

Faculty Publications

We analyzed the business reopening process in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, which hit the region on August 29, 2005, to better understand what the major predictors were and how their impacts changed through time. A telephone survey of businesses in New Orleans was conducted in October 2007, 26 months after Hurricane Katrina. The data were analyzed using a modified spatial probit regression model to evaluate the importance of each predictor variable through time. The results suggest that the two most important reopening predictors throughout all time periods were the flood depth at the business location and business size as …

Predictability Of Biomass Burning In Response To Climate Changes, A.-L. Daniau, Megan Walsh Oct 2012

Predictability Of Biomass Burning In Response To Climate Changes, A.-L. Daniau, Megan Walsh

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Climate is an important control on biomass burning, but the sensitivity of fire to changes in temperature and moisture balance has not been quantified. We analyze sedimentary charcoal records to show that the changes in fire regime over the past 21,000 yrs are predictable from changes in regional climates. Analyses of paleo- fire data show that fire increases monotonically with changes in temperature and peaks at intermediate moisture levels, and that temperature is quantitatively the most important driver of changes in biomass burning over the past 21,000 yrs. Given that a similar relationship between climate drivers and fire emerges from …

Swimming In Deep Waters. A Response To "A Review Of Teaching As A Moral Practice", Deborah Schussler, Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Mary E. Diez, Peter Murrell Oct 2012

Swimming In Deep Waters. A Response To "A Review Of Teaching As A Moral Practice", Deborah Schussler, Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Mary E. Diez, Peter Murrell

Democracy & Education

The authors respond to a review of their book, Teaching as a Moral Practice: Defining, Developing, and Assessing Dispositions. The authors emphasize a vision of shared commitments for quality teaching whereby teacher-educators instill and nurture the wisdom and virtue that a moral teacher must possess in order to teach in a variety of circumstances where clear-cut answers do not exist. In addition, teacher-educators help teachers discern how, in that context, they should enact particular knowledge, skills, and commitments to reach desired ends. The key to enact this vision of teaching as a shared, moral practice is critical colleagueship.

How Is The Most Segregated City In The Country Addressing Disproportionate Minority Contact With A Juvenile Burglary Restorative Justice Program And What Implications Exist For Community Based Restorative Circles? : Conflict Analysis And Recommendations, Lauren Thrift

Capstone Collection

Milwaukee, Wisconsin is considered the most segregated city in the country and has the most disproportionate rate of minorities in Wisconsin’s juvenile justice system. The State of Wisconsin recognizes disproportionate minority contact (DMC) is a product of both differential offending by minorities and the racist differential processing by the juvenile justice system. Milwaukee’s residents are locked in a conflict about the role of racism in the high rates of minority crime and whether to address DMC with more stringent punishment or increasing alternatives to incarceration. The entrenched segregation between African American and Caucasian neighborhoods and social groups reinforces polarization, increasing …

Acquisition Of Airborne Imagery In Support Of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Recovery Assessments, Charles R. Bostater, Frank Edgar Müller-Karger Oct 2012

Acquisition Of Airborne Imagery In Support Of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Recovery Assessments, Charles R. Bostater, Frank Edgar Müller-Karger

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Remote sensing imagery was collected from a low flying aircraft along the near coastal waters of the Florida Panhandle and northern Gulf of Mexico and into Barataria Bay, Louisiana, USA, during March 2011. Imagery was acquired from an aircraft that simultaneously collected traditional photogrammetric film imagery, digital video, digital still images, and digital hyperspectral imagery. The original purpose of the project was to collect airborne imagery to support assessment of weathered oil in littoral areas influenced by the Deepwater Horizon oil and gas spill that occurred during the spring and summer of 2010. This paper describes the data acquired and …

Contrast Based Band Selection For Optimized Weathered Oil Detection In Hyperspectral Images, Florian Levaux, Charles R. Bostater, Xavier Neyt Oct 2012

Contrast Based Band Selection For Optimized Weathered Oil Detection In Hyperspectral Images, Florian Levaux, Charles R. Bostater, Xavier Neyt

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Hyperspectral imagery offers unique benefits for detection of land and water features due to the information contained in reflectance signatures such as the bi-directional reflectance distribution function or BRDF. The reflectance signature directly shows the relative absorption and backscattering features of targets. These features can be very useful in shoreline monitoring or surveillance applications, for example to detect weathered oil. In real-time detection applications, processing of hyperspectral data can be an important tool and Optimal band selection is thus important in real time applications in order to select the essential bands using the absorption and backscatter information. In the present …

Airborne Multisensor Remote Sensing Systems For Subsurface Feature Detection In Littoral Zones, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper describes low altitude mobile imaging of near coastal waters in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. A suite of mobile multispectral and hyperspectral sensors were flown between ∼1,000m to ∼3000m altitudes in order detect subsurface features in nearby wetlands and littoral zone areas following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. In this paper techniques used to develop, integrate and calibrate the airborne sensors are described. The sensors include a multispectral digital frame camera system, a traditional photogrammetric camera, and a small custom hyperspectral imaging system with custom software. Ancillary sensors include include multiple differential GPS and inertial motion unit (IMU) …

Transition In The Fractal Geometry Of Arctic Melt Ponds, C. Hohenegger, B. Alali, K. R. Steffen, D. K. Perovich, K. M. Golden Oct 2012

Transition In The Fractal Geometry Of Arctic Melt Ponds, C. Hohenegger, B. Alali, K. R. Steffen, D. K. Perovich, K. M. Golden

Dartmouth Scholarship

During the Arctic melt season, the sea ice surface undergoes a remarkable transformation from vast expanses of snow covered ice to complex mosaics of ice and melt ponds. Sea ice albedo, a key parameter in climate modeling, is determined by the complex evolution of melt pond configurations. In fact, ice–albedo feedback has played a major role in the recent declines of the summer Arctic sea ice pack. However, understanding melt pond evolution remains a significant challenge to improving climate projections. By analyzing area–perimeter data from hundreds of thousands of melt ponds, we find here an unexpected separation of scales, where …

Misunderstood: The Matthew Shepherd Hate Crime And Its Intercultural Implications, Cameron Muir

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The increasing vocalization by both supporters and opponents of homosexual rights has launched the topic into the spotlight, reenergizing a vibrant discussion that personally affects millions of Americans and which will determine the direction in which U.S. national policy will develop. This essay serves as a continuation of this discussion, using the Matthew Shepherd Hate crime, which occurred in October of 1998, as a focal point around which a detailed analysis of homophobia and masculinity in American culture will emerge.

Multicultural Cities, Communication And Transportation Improvements. An Empirical Analysis For Italy, Cristina Cattaneo Oct 2012

Multicultural Cities, Communication And Transportation Improvements. An Empirical Analysis For Italy, Cristina Cattaneo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper investigates the determinants of cosmopolitan cities. The hypothesis tested empirically is whether gradual improvements in distant communication boost the generation of ethnically heterogeneous cities. Consequently to easier communication, movers increasingly rely on an enlarged community for identity transmission, rather than on localized peer effects of segregated environment. The empirical estimation provides support to the prediction of the model. A better access to the airports as well as improvements in internet communications are found to increase city ethnic diversity.
