Growth Curve Prediction From Optical Density Data, I Mytilinaios, M Salih, Hk Schofield, Rjw Lambert
Growth Curve Prediction From Optical Density Data, I Mytilinaios, M Salih, Hk Schofield, Rjw Lambert
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
A fundamental aspect of predictive microbiology is the shape of the microbial growth curve and many models are used to fit microbial count data, the modified Gompertz and Baranyi equation being two of the most widely used. Rapid, automated methods such as turbidimetry have been widely used to obtain growth parameters, but do not directly give the microbial growth curve. Optical density (OD) data can be used to obtain the specific growth rate and if used in conjunction with the known initial inocula, the maximum population data and knowledge of the microbial number at a predefined OD at a known …
Improbable Art: The Creative Economy And Sustainable Cluster Development In A Hong Kong Industrial District, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
A noted Singapore-based cultural geographer and specialist on Asia analyzes the emergence and functioning of a unique artistic cluster in Hong Kong's Fotan light industrial district. The objective of the research is to understand how artistic work in the cluster, despite some challenges, has thus far proven sustainable in cultural, social, and economic terms. The findings of this case study permit further clarification of several dimensions of an emerging theory of cultural/creative clusters, which should be considered as distinct from business and industrial clusters. Selective comparisons between the Fotan cluster and the Moganshan Lu cluster in Shanghai demonstrate that cultural/creative …
Civil Society And Local Activism In South Korea's Local Democratization, Yooil Bae, Sunhyuk Kim
Civil Society And Local Activism In South Korea's Local Democratization, Yooil Bae, Sunhyuk Kim
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Recent studies on causes of intergovernmental transformation in old and new democracies have found that decentralization is often the outcome of negotiations between national and local political interests. South Korea is commonly believed to be an exception because local elections and institutions introduced in the early 1990s were, by and large, the product of negotiations among political elites at the centre, without significant inclusion of local actors. However, this article attempts to explicate a hitherto ignored aspect of decentralization reform in Korea: the role of civil society and local activism in the politics of decentralization. In the 2000s, several ‘triggering …
The Effects Of Culture And Structure On Strategic Flexibility During Business Model Innovation, Adam J. Bock, Tore Opsahl, Gerard George, David M. Gann
The Effects Of Culture And Structure On Strategic Flexibility During Business Model Innovation, Adam J. Bock, Tore Opsahl, Gerard George, David M. Gann
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study uses responses from 107 multinational firms to reveal CEO perceptions of the drivers of strategic flexibility during business model innovation. While the positive effect of creative culture is confirmed, partner reliance reduces strategic flexibility during business model innovation. Further, structural change is disaggregated into efforts that either focus managerial attention on core activities or reconfigure existing activities. CEOs perceive that structural flexibility requires structural simplification while retaining control of non-core functions. We find that the relative magnitude of business model innovation effort moderates the effect of reconfiguration on strategic flexibility. The implications for theories of organizational design and …

Global Monthly Water Scarcity: Blue Water Footprints Versus Blue Water Availability, Arjen Y. Hoekstra, Mesfin Mekonnen, Ashok K. Chapagain, Ruth E. Mathews, Brian D. Richter
Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications
Freshwater scarcity is a growing concern, placing considerable importance on the accuracy of indicators used to characterize and map water scarcity worldwide. We improve upon past efforts by using estimates of blue water footprints (consumptive use of ground- and surface water flows) rather than water withdrawals, accounting for the flows needed to sustain critical ecological functions and by considering monthly rather than annual values. We analyzed 405 river basins for the period 1996–2005. In 201 basins with 2.67 billion inhabitants there was severe water scarcity during at least one month of the year. The ecological and economic consequences of increasing …

The Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve is located on the Pacific coast of the state of Jalisco in Mexico. The Reserve was founded in 1993 and covers 13142 hectares. It is one of the few reserves in Mexico created for the protection of the tropical deciduous (dry) forest and associated ecosystems. Five centipede species have hitherto been reported from the Reserve: Cormocephalus impressus Porat, 1876; Dendrothereua linceci (Wood, 1867); Ectonocryptoides quadrimeropus Shelley and Mercurio, 2005; Scolopendra polymorpha (Wood, 1861) and Scolopendra viridis Say, 1821. The first formal study on the centipede fauna in the Reserve commenced in July 2010. After one year …

Integration Of Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games Client-Server Architectures With Collaborative Multi-User Engineering Cax Tools, Joshua D. Winn
Integration Of Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games Client-Server Architectures With Collaborative Multi-User Engineering Cax Tools, Joshua D. Winn
Theses and Dissertations
This research presents a new method for integrating client server architectures that are used for the development of Massive Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) into multi-user engineering software tools. The new method creates a new architecture named CAx Connect by changing the client-pull-server communication pipeline to a server-push-client communication pipeline, effectively reducing the amount of bandwidth consumed and allowing these tools to utilize multiple server processors for complex calculations. This method was used on the new NX Connect multi-user CAx prototype developed at BYU. The new method provides a road map to further implement this architecture and its services into …

Patterns And Perceptions Of Climate Change In A Biodiversity Conservation Hotspot, Joel N. Hartter, Mary D. Stampone, Sadie J. Ryan, Karen Kirner, Colin A. Chapman, Abraham Goldman
Geography
Quantifying local people's perceptions to climate change, and their assessments of which changes matter, is fundamental to addressing the dual challenge of land conservation and poverty alleviation in densely populated tropical regions To develop appropriate policies and responses, it will be important not only to anticipate the nature of expected changes, but also how they are perceived, interpreted and adapted to by local residents. The Albertine Rift region in East Africa is one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots due to dense smallholder agriculture, high levels of land and resource pressures, and habitat loss and conversion. Results of three …

Tales Of Empire: Orientalism In Nineteenth-Century Children's Literature, Brittany Renee Griffin
Tales Of Empire: Orientalism In Nineteenth-Century Children's Literature, Brittany Renee Griffin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children's literature often does not hold the same weight in the studies of a culture as its big brother, the novel. However, as children's literature is written by adults, to convey information which is important for a child to learn in order to be a functioning member of that society, it can be analyzed in the same way novels are, to provide insight into the broad sweeping issues that concerned the adults of that era. Nineteenth-century British children's literature in particular reveals the deep-seated preoccupation the British Empire had with its eastern colonies, and shows how England's relationship to those …
