Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Coyote (Canis Latrans) Diet In Calgary, Alberta, Victoria M. Lukasik, Shelley M. Alexander Feb 2012

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Coyote (Canis Latrans) Diet In Calgary, Alberta, Victoria M. Lukasik, Shelley M. Alexander

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

We examined the diet of a portion of Calgary’s urban coyotes to provide baseline data on feeding ecology, to determine spatial and seasonal effects on diet, and to assess whether anthropogenic food sources (primarily garbage) and domestic cats or dogs were part of coyote diet. Bi-weekly surveys of seven study sites were conducted between August 2006 and September 2007. We analyzed 484 coyote scats. The top five prey types consumed by the coyotes studied were small mammals (84.71%), herbaceous plants (44.63%), crabapples (33.88%), woody plants (16.94%) and anthropogenic food sources (14.05%). Domestic animals – cats (Felis catus) and …

Defining Inadequate Performance Under The North Carolina Tenured Teacher Fair Dismissal Act, William P. Harper Jr., Richard T. Gammon Feb 2012

Defining Inadequate Performance Under The North Carolina Tenured Teacher Fair Dismissal Act, William P. Harper Jr., Richard T. Gammon

Campbell Law Review

The purpose of this comment is to provide a prospective definition for the term "inadequate performance" as it is used in the North Carolina Tenured Teacher Fair Dismissal Act. Through this effort, we hope that school boards and professional educators gain insight into the potential statutory constructions of "inadequate performance" and plan to avoid protracted litigation concerning a teacher's dismissal in North Carolina specifically on the grounds of "inadequate performance."

Modeling The Miocene Climatic Optimum: Ocean Circulation, Nicholas Herold, Matthew Huber, R. D. Müller, M. Seton Feb 2012

Modeling The Miocene Climatic Optimum: Ocean Circulation, Nicholas Herold, Matthew Huber, R. D. Müller, M. Seton

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Ocean circulation is investigated using the Community Climate System Model 3 (CCSM3) forced with early to middle Miocene (∼20–14 Ma) topography, bathymetry, vegetation and modern CO2. Significant bottom water formation is modeled in the Weddell Sea along with intermediate North Component Water formation in the North Atlantic. This is attributed primarily to stronger- and weaker-than-modern convective preconditioning in the Weddell and Labrador Seas, respectively. Global meridional overturning and gyre circulation is weaker in the Miocene due to weaker midlatitude westerlies in the southern hemisphere, caused by lowering of the meridional surface temperature gradient, in addition to regional influences on convection. …

Rural Demographic Change In The New Century: Slower Growth, Increased Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson Feb 2012

Rural Demographic Change In The New Century: Slower Growth, Increased Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

This brief examines rural demographic trends in the first decade of the twenty-first century using newly available data from the 2010 Census. The rural population grew by just 2.2 million between 2000 and 2010—a gain barely half as great as that during the 1990s. Population growth was particularly slow in farming and mining counties and sharply reduced in rural manufacturing counties. Rural population gains were largest in high-amenity counties and just beyond the metropolitan fringe. Diversity accelerated in rural America, with racial and ethnic minorities accounting for 83 percent of rural population growth between 2000 and 2010.

Clustering, Randomness, And Regularity: Spatial Distributions And Human Performance On The Traveling Salesperson Problem And Minimum Spanning Tree Problem, Matthew Dry, Kym Preiss, Johan Wagemans Feb 2012

Clustering, Randomness, And Regularity: Spatial Distributions And Human Performance On The Traveling Salesperson Problem And Minimum Spanning Tree Problem, Matthew Dry, Kym Preiss, Johan Wagemans

The Journal of Problem Solving

We investigated human performance on the Euclidean Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) and Euclidean Minimum Spanning Tree Problem (MST-P) in regards to a factor that has previously received little attention within the literature: the spatial distributions of TSP and MST-P stimuli. First, we describe a method for quantifying the relative degree of clustering, randomness or regularity within point distributions. We then review evidence suggesting this factor might influence human performance on the two problem types. Following this we report an experiment in which the participants were asked to solve TSP and MST-P test stimuli that had been generated to be either …

Observational Bounds On Atmospheric Heating By Aerosol Absorption: Radiative Signature Of Transatlantic Dust, Amit Davidi, Alexander Kostinski, Ilan Koren, Yoav Lehahn Feb 2012

Observational Bounds On Atmospheric Heating By Aerosol Absorption: Radiative Signature Of Transatlantic Dust, Amit Davidi, Alexander Kostinski, Ilan Koren, Yoav Lehahn

Department of Physics Publications

[1] Aerosols absorb solar radiation thus changing the atmospheric temperature profile but the overall magnitude of this effect is not known. To that end, Saharan dust emissions over the Atlantic Ocean provide an opportunity to examine aerosol‐related heating via satellite imaging. A major difficulty, however, is disentangling a straightforward heating signal caused by the absorbing dust from a meteorological signal, which originates from correlation between dust concentration and air temperature. To tackle the problem, we combine temperature (T) soundings, from the atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS), with aerosol optical depth (τ) measurements, from the moderate resolution imaging …

Whaling: Don’T Trade The Moratorium Away, Mark Peter Simmonds, Sue Fisher

Conservation Collection

In their proposal to allocate ‘whale shares’ to both whalers and conservationists as an alternative to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling, Christopher Costello and colleagues overlook several factors (Nature 481, 139–140; 2012).
