Stone In The Center, Amy Lubke Jul 2012

Stone In The Center, Amy Lubke

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Before the rise of the Incan Empire, there was an ancient civilization living throughout the Andes that thrived for several years. This civilization inhabited the region near the basin of Lake Titicaca known as the city of Tiahuanaco, presently in modern day Bolivia. Located at the site are many remnants of architectural structures and artwork made of stone. Little definitive knowledge is known about the peoples that created these enigmatic works.

This study is an examination of the stonework at the site of Tiahuanaco. These structures display the exquisite masonry skills and artistic capabilities that the ancient civilization attained. Each …

Medical Social Sciences. Their Potential Contributions To Medical Education Reforms In Saudi Arabia, Hussein M. Al-Borie Jul 2012

Medical Social Sciences. Their Potential Contributions To Medical Education Reforms In Saudi Arabia, Hussein M. Al-Borie

Saudi Medical Journal

This article emphasizes a holistic definition of health. It then introduces the concept of Medical social sciences, and drawing from the literature, argues for the inevitability of social sciences in medical education, especially in the health systems of developing countries including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). This is followed by a brief history of medical education in KSA, and an examination of some important social science issues. Finally, this article suggests how a holistic approach involving inputs from the social and behavioral sciences could be incorporated into undergraduate medical education to produce medical professionals who could better meet the …

Racial Microaggressions And The Filipino American Experience: Recommendations For Counseling And Development, Kevin L. Nadal, Kara M. Vigilia Escobar, Gail T. Prado, Ejr David, Kristal Haynes

Publications and Research

Racial microaggressions are subtle forms of verbal and behavioral discrimination toward people of color. The current qualitative study explores the experiences of Filipino American participants (N = 12), who described 13 categories of microaggressions, including being treated as an alien in one’s own land or as a 2nd-class citizen, being presumed to have inferior status or intellect, being assumed to uphold Filipino stereotypes, or being mistaken for another identity. Recommendations for counseling and development are discussed.

Internet Use Among Racial/ Ethnic Groups In The United States, Ngozi C. Kamalu Jun 2012

Internet Use Among Racial/ Ethnic Groups In The United States, Ngozi C. Kamalu

Government and History Faculty Working Papers

The purpose of this study is to determine whether race and/or ethnicity makers) a difference in internet use among groups in the United States. The researcher found that even though the rate and intensity of internet use appears to increase among all racial groups in the United States, minorities, especially, Blacks and Hispanic are significantly less likely than Whites to subscribe, and use the internet frequently and intensely. In other words, "digital divide" indeed does exist based on race/ ethnicity, regardless of the increase in computer and internet usage among all demographic groups in the United States. The gap however, …

Ethnographic Studies On The Role Of Caregiver In Providing Care For Older Persons In Citengah Village, Sumedang, West Java And Its Implication Of Care Giving Program, Vita Priantina Dewi

APIAS-TSAO-ILC Symposium for Junior Researchers on Active Ageing 2012

Many countries in the world will experience increasingly ageing populations in the 21st century. One of the countries that will have dramatic increase in the number of aged people in its populations is Indonesia. The increasing proportion of older persons in Indonesia also bring an impact on the issue of providing care for older persons especially for older persons who are no longer working. Most of study on elderly people are focused on social activities of the elderly. However, there are limited studies on the providing care for older persons in rural areas in Indonesia. Therefore, the decision to study …

Moving Forward In Sierra Leone: Community-Based Factors For Post Conflict Development, Whitney Mcintyre Miller Jun 2012

Moving Forward In Sierra Leone: Community-Based Factors For Post Conflict Development, Whitney Mcintyre Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

War and conflict, while not manifested as economic or natural disaster, often bring the same consequences and damages and require similar capacity building. This article discusses the following four community-based factors, which contributed to the postconflict development of two communities in Sierra Leone, West Africa: (a) the inclusive involvement of community members for development and construction projects, (b) the use of culturally responsive practices in community building, (c) leadership that is directly connected with the community, and (d) the combination of traditional and local development practices with western and governmental practices. These factors were derived from an intensive five-week qualitative …

Developing Service Delivery Measures For Studies Of Practice Variation: The Mprove Study, Glen P. Mays Jun 2012

Developing Service Delivery Measures For Studies Of Practice Variation: The Mprove Study, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

OBJECTIVES: A growing body of evidence indicates that the delivery of public health activities varies widely across states and communities, creating missed opportunities for prevention as well as inequities in health protection. Consequently, HHS recently used a consensus-based process to develop a framework for improving quality in public health and to identify a set of nine priority areas for improvement. As next steps in operationalizing this framework, measures of quality in public health are needed to guide public health improvement initiatives and to support research on the comparative effectiveness of alternative public health strategies. This presentation profiles the methodology developed …

Repeated Origin And Loss Of Adhesive Toepads In Geckos, Tony Gamble, Eli Greenbaum, Todd R. Jackman, Anthony P. Russell, Aaron M. Bauer Jun 2012

Repeated Origin And Loss Of Adhesive Toepads In Geckos, Tony Gamble, Eli Greenbaum, Todd R. Jackman, Anthony P. Russell, Aaron M. Bauer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Geckos are well known for their extraordinary clinging abilities and many species easily scale vertical or even inverted surfaces. This ability is enabled by a complex digital adhesive mechanism (adhesive toepads) that employs van der Waals based adhesion, augmented by frictional forces. Numerous morphological traits and behaviors have evolved to facilitate deployment of the adhesive mechanism, maximize adhesive force and enable release from the substrate. The complex digital morphologies that result allow geckos to interact with their environment in a novel fashion quite differently from most other lizards. Details of toepad morphology suggest multiple gains and losses of the adhesive …

Tabrez, Kavita Gangal, Ronojoy Adhikari, Anwar Alizai, Florin Filip, Sam Vanlaningham, James P.M. Syvitski

Faculty Publications

The collapse of the Bronze Age Harappan, one of the earliest urban civilizations, remains an enigma. Urbanism flourished in the western region of the Indo-Gangetic Plain for approximately 600 y, but since approximately 3,900 y ago, the total settled area and settlement sizes declined, many sites were abandoned, and a significant shift in site numbers and density towards the east is recorded. We report morphologic and chronologic evidence indicating that fluvial landscapes in Harappan territory became remarkably stable during the late Holocene as aridification intensified in the region after approximately 5,000 BP. Upstream on the alluvial plain, the large Himalayan …

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Ozark Ant Ecology, Robin Michelle Verble Jun 2012

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Ozark Ant Ecology, Robin Michelle Verble

Theses and Dissertations

Fires are among the most conspicuous disturbances affecting leaf litter communities, and are sources of both direct and indirect insect mortality. Fires historically occurred on the Ozark landscape at high frequencies, and modern forest managers utilize prescribed fire to restore and maintain those ecosystems. I examined fire effects at multiple scales, ranging from post-fire patterns in leaf litter arthropod community structure to responses of individual organisms to heat stress. This dissertation summarizes the history of fire occurrences in Ozark forests of Arkansas. It then unifies the results of four observational and experimental studies designed to assess how Ozark forest ant …
