Racial Disparities In Sentencing In The U.S. And Georgia, Kamal Rattray, Nicole Lee
Georgia Journal of Public Policy
Incarceration represents the ultimate use of coercive power, and in the state of Georgia, that power is being disproportionately levied upon people of color, particularly African Americans.1 According to 2011 statistics from the Georgia Department of Corrections, the total prison population statewide was approximately 53,341 inmates. The majority of that number were Blacks (33,069 inmates), followed by Whites (17,752 inmates), Hispanics (2,306 inmates) and other ethnic groups.
Clergy And Gender In Medieval England: A Bioarchaeological Approach, Alexandra Nicole Busot
Clergy And Gender In Medieval England: A Bioarchaeological Approach, Alexandra Nicole Busot
Open Access Theses
In the Middle Ages, masculinity could best be defined by the ability of a male to impregnate women, protect dependents and serve as a provider for one's family. With the Gregorian Reform of the eleventh century came a campaign against clerical marriage, which thereby effectively disallowed men of faith to perform the traditional masculine gender roles. The clergy, while biologically male, were seemingly emasculated by their vows of chastity and expected to perform tasks that in many cases were considered to be feminine. For these reasons, some medievalists have proposed that the unique role that these men performed should be …

Two Boundaries Separate Borrelia Burgdorferi Populations In North America, Gabriele Margos, Jean I. Tsao, Santiago Castillo-Ramirez, Yvette A. Girard, Anne G. Hoen
Dartmouth Scholarship
Understanding the spread of infectious diseases is crucial for implementing effective control measures. For this, it is important to obtain information on the contemporary population structure of a disease agent and to infer the evolutionary processes that may have shaped it. Here, we investigate on a continental scale the population structure of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis (LB), a tick-borne disease, in North America. We test the hypothesis that the observed d population structure is congruent with recent population expansions and that these were preceded by bottlenecks mostly likely caused by the near extirpation in the 1900s …

The Quality Of Education In Tanzania: An Exploration Into Its Determinants, Sam Maghimbi
The Quality Of Education In Tanzania: An Exploration Into Its Determinants, Sam Maghimbi
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Recent rapid expansion in school enrolment at all levels represents a profound challenge to parents and the government in Tanzania. There has been a very high increase in the number of school-going-age children from year to year due to high fertility. Government resources are thinly spread in very many schools, and there is fear that quality of education may be compromised. The paper presents the argument that there is in evidence a government-will-pay (gwp) attitude in the parents’ values. The parents’ contribution to secure improvement in quality of education is not forthcoming because of this belief, which is traced to …
An Investigation Of The Nutritional Condition Of Low-Latitude Fish Larvae: Growth, Transport, And Implications For Population Connectivity, Martha J. Hauff
An Investigation Of The Nutritional Condition Of Low-Latitude Fish Larvae: Growth, Transport, And Implications For Population Connectivity, Martha J. Hauff
Open Access Dissertations
Coral reef fishes are typically characterized by a protracted pelagic larval dispersal period, which creates the potential for connectivity of geographically discrete populations. The degree to which connectivity occurs is affected not only by whether larvae are transported from one reef to another, but also by whether they reach a settlement site in adequate nutritional condition to survive the juvenile period and beyond. It is possible that larvae with different dispersal trajectories (i.e. those that are retained close to shore as compared to those that travel great distances) may differ in their condition levels, and thereby, the extent to which …
Conceptualizing Urban Adaptation To Climate Change Findings From An Applied Adaptation Assessment Framework, Katie Johnson, Margaretha Breil
Conceptualizing Urban Adaptation To Climate Change Findings From An Applied Adaptation Assessment Framework, Katie Johnson, Margaretha Breil
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Urban areas have particular sensitivities to climate change, and therefore adaptation to a warming planet represents a challenging new issue for urban policy makers in both the developed and developing world. Further to climate mitigation strategies implemented in various cities over the past 20 years, more recent efforts of urban management have also included actions taken to adapt to increasing temperatures, sea level and extreme events. Through the examination and comparison of seven cities, this paper identifies the various levels of administrative adaptation planning, the tools and information used in making policy choices, and the roles of governance and finance …

Environmental Regulation And The Cross-Border Diffusion Of New Technology: Evidence From Automobile Patents, Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Richard Perkins, Eric Neumayer
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We examine the impact of environmental regulation on the international diffusion of new technology through the patent system. We employ a dataset of automobile emission standards between 1992 and 2007 and corresponding data on cross-border patent inflows of technologies developed to comply with these standards. Our analysis, based on a research design of country pair years, shows it is “regulatory distance” between countries rather than absolute regulatory stringency per se that matters for cross-border patent inflows: the transfer of compliance technologies rises when regulatory standards in the inventor and the recipient countries become “closer”. Consistent with this main result, we …

Detecting Vegetation Recovery Patterns After Hurricanes In South Florida Using Ndvi Time Series, Yu Wang
Detecting Vegetation Recovery Patterns After Hurricanes In South Florida Using Ndvi Time Series, Yu Wang
Open Access Theses
The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is one of the most widely used vegetation indexes to measure and monitor plant growth, vegetation cover, and biomass production. A variety of different multispectral satellite systems could provide NDVI time series to examine the long-term vegetation process patterns. The effects of hurricanes on forested ecosystems can range from very minor defoliation of only a few trees to catastrophic blow-down of whole forest. During 2005, two hurricanes hit South Florida, Hurricane Katrina on Aug 25th and Hurricane Wilma on Oct. 24th. Several studies have evaluated the impact of hurricanes on mangroves, but relatively few …

The gastrointestinal tract harbors a complex and diverse microbiota that has an important role in host metabolism. Microbial diversity is influenced by a combination of environmental and host genetic factors and is associated with several polygenic diseases. In this study we combined next-generation sequencing, genetic mapping, and a set of physiological traits of the BXD mouse population to explore genetic factors that explain differences in gut microbiota and its impact on metabolic traits. Molecular profiling of the gut microbiota revealed important quantitative differences in microbial composition among BXD strains. These differences in gut microbial composition are influenced by host-genetics, which …

Assessment Of The Oxbow Morphology Of The Caloosahatchee River And Its Evolution Over Time: A Case Study In South Florida, Chloe Delhomme
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Caloosahatchee River, located in Southern Florida, was originally a meandering and relatively shallow river. During the 1920s, the Caloosahatchee River was channelized and became the C-43 canal. The channelization has significantly impacted the river ecosystem, particularly the oxbows. The oxbows are the U-shaped water bodies on each side of the river channel, which are the remnant bends of the original river. To understand how anthropogenic influence affects hydrologic systems, the proposed case study was designed to assess the geomorphic changes of the oxbows of the Caloosahatchee River, Florida. Understanding and documenting the evolution of river morphology is becoming increasingly …

Correlation Between Facebook Usage And Loneliness And Depression, Jasmine (Chi Man) Tang, Michael Livingston
Psychology Faculty Publications
Facebook has emerged into our society within the last couple years as a powerful social phenomenon. 11.5% of the world population are active users of Facebook while there is a serious lack of psychological theory relating to functions or effects of Facebook. Researchers began realizing the importance of investigating the usage of Facebook and how that might be related to different personality traits. However, not much research has been done on how Facebook use could be related to our social well-beings.
The current study aims to investigate how the use of Facebook influences loneliness and depression. The results showed that …

Caribbean Bodyscapes: The Politics Of Sacred Citizenship And The Transpersonal Body, Josune Urbistondo
Open Access Dissertations
In this project I explore the relationship of sacred citizenship as an alternative and at times overlapping form of politics to national citizenship. Sacred citizenship creates a possibility of belonging for marginalized identities in Caribbean and Caribbean diasporic women’s writing. All the novels examined in this project, Cristina García’s Monkey Hunting (2004), Shani Mootoo’s Cereus Blooms at Night (2001), Patricia Powell’s The Pagoda (1998), Mayra Montero’s The Red of His Shadow (2001), Ana-Maurine Lara’s Erzulie’s Skirt (2006), and Daína Chaviano’s The Island of Eternal Love (2008), depict protagonists that practice restricted versions of national citizenship. Due to varying degrees of …

Mobile Spatial Interaction In The Future Internet Of Things, James Carswell, Junjun Yin
Conference papers
Research and development of mobile information systems in the Future Internet of Things is about delivering technologies built around management and access to real-time heterogeneous datasets. Analyzing these enormous volumes of disparate data on mobile devices requires context-aware smart applications and services. 3DQ (Three Dimensional Query) is our novel mobile spatial interaction (MSI) prototype for data mining and analysis on today’s location and orientation aware “smartphones” within such 3D sensor web environments. Our application tailors a military style threat dome query calculation using MSI with “hidden query removal” functionality to reduce information overload and heighten situation awareness on these commercial …

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Enterprise GIS solutions are becoming more attractive to companies to implement because of the ability to leverage system of record portals. Information is largely regarded as a company’s competitive advantage enabling organizational capability to operate and build capital and equity within a business. And with good reason large amounts of data and information are difficult to collect and organize within a digital framework. Building a GIS enterprise is a solution for data organization and management. Workflows must be in place to collect, process, calculate, and store data with high regard to timeliness and accuracy. Business decisions are made based on …

Quality And Severity Of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Among African American Elders, Daniel L. Howard, Bennett G. Edwards, Kimberly Whitehead, M. A. Amamoo, Paul A. Godley
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Lack of population-based data on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) among African American men represents a significant gap in understanding. This study examined LUTS among a racially over-sampled, mixed urban/rural, elderly cohort of African Americans and whites in the South to discern whether racial differences exist in the prevalence, severity, and associated risk factors of LUTS. Longitudinal analyses using generalized estimating equations (GEE) were conducted on the 1994–1998 EPESE dataset for 5 North Carolina counties. In 1994, the analytic cohort included 482 African Americans and 407 whites; by 1998, 249 and 222, respectively. In 1994, 49.4% of African Americans reported …

Historic baselines are important in developing our understanding of ecosystems in the face of rapid global change. While a number of studies have sought to determine changes in extent of exploited habitats over historic timescales, few have quantified such changes prior to late twentieth century baselines. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first ever large-scale quantitative assessment of the extent and biomass of marine habitat-forming species over a 100-year time frame. We examined records of wild native oyster abundance in the United States from a historic, yet already exploited, baseline between 1878 and 1935 (predominantly 1885–1915), and a current …
