Designers Coping With Culture In An Educational Setting, Annemiek Van Boeijen, Pieter Jan Stappers Jul 2012

Designers Coping With Culture In An Educational Setting, Annemiek Van Boeijen, Pieter Jan Stappers

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents the results of a qualitative study about how design students cope with culture in the i-do (international design opportunity) series of international design workshops in Hong Kong. We wanted to learn three things. (1) To what extent do the design students from different nations share common cultural values? (2) what difficulties do design students encounter in this type of workshops, and what techniques and strategies do they use to cope with (cultural) barriers? and (3) what opportunities (personal benefits) do they identify to attend this type of workshop? The results and conclusions are based on experiences of …

Culture, Workplace And Design: The Office Code Unveiled, Catherine Gall, Beatriz Arantes, Izabel Barros, Annemieke Garskamp, Melanie Redman, Sudhakar Lahade, Ilona Maier

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The global business world has shed a bright light on cultural differences and generated extensive examination of values and behaviors around the world. Yet despite obvious differences in the design and utilization of office environments, little attention has been given to the implications of culture on space design. Multinational companies, unaware of the cultural ramifications of culture-specific design, often transplant workplace layouts from their home locations to other countries around the world, with little thought to local culture, climate and employees’ needs and expectations. The results can be workplaces that are unappealing, dysfunctional and stressful. What are the key trends …

Nation Branding: Developing A Visual Identity Handbook For Graphic Design Practitioners In Malaysia, Debbie Siew Siew Gan, Douglas Wilson, Anthony Crabbe

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents a project developed during the course of a PhD investigating the role graphic design can play in the national branding of emergent nations such as Malaysia. Contemporary Malaysian society and culture was reviewed in the context of present views of globalisation and postcolonialism, and the phenomenon of “glocalisation” emerges as an important one in Malaysia. The need for a design handbook was suggested by the findings of a variety of design research methods that were used to identify the nature of graphic design practice in Malaysia, including the examination of the national governmental framework of design practices …

The Application Of Artificial Intelligence Methods In Sustainable Rural Planning, Shwu-Ting Lee, Ya-Han Hsieh, Chih-Wen Wu

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Sustainable rural planning is the environmentally friendly issue worldwide. Taiwanese government has enacted the “Rural Regeneration Act” to direct sustainable development in Taiwanese rural areas. ‘Lun’ is a sort of landscape arranged on coastal plain in westernside of Taiwan, which was formed over time by natural waterway and wind power. Some literatures have pointed out that the features of Lun can provide habitats for many species, and form protective barriers to against both winter monsoon and powerful sea-wind. Some sorts of field-investigation literatures have described that, many rural village developments around coastal regions in Taiwan have obviously been affected by …

Designer As Author Activist: A Model For Engagement, Steven Mccarthy Jul 2012

Designer As Author Activist: A Model For Engagement, Steven Mccarthy

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Public discourse has long been enlivened by graphic designers who harness their creative skills and ideas to political, social and cultural issues. Iconic examples populate the canon of American graphic design history over the past century: designs for the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s and ’40s, Lorriane Schneider’s 1967 poster “War Is Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things,” Gran Fury’s AIDS awareness campaigns during the 1980s, and carrying the concept into the new millennium, Shepard Fairey’s recent “Obama Hope” posters. However, historical emphasis has often been on the individual design artifact, with secondary consideration of the contextual …

The Study And Analysis Of Jewelry Design And Production Process Ban Kheawasinarin Kheawasinarin Sub District Surin Province For Conservation Development And Promotion, Taweesak Molsawat

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This research will analyze significant issues surrounding the jewelry designs of Ban Kheawasinarin in an attempt to discover the most appropriate and efficient methods of conservation, development and promotion. Problems identified include deficiencies in marketing strategy, presentation of product image in contemporary culture and design development. In the context of today’s - globalized and largely capitalist - society, the subjects of cultural significance and national identity have not yet been addressed. Failure to communicate such ideas to the public has resulted in a general unawareness of significant cultural truths and the notion of national heritage. The chosen research methodologies are: …

Unesco Cities Of Design: Montréal As Prototype, Christopher J. Moore Jul 2012

Unesco Cities Of Design: Montréal As Prototype, Christopher J. Moore

DRS Biennial Conference Series

On May 12, 2006, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially declared Montréal as an international City of Design. As the only North American metropolis to have received this designation from UNESCO, Montréal is the ideal location to begin a program of research interrogating and questioning the merits of a “Design City.” This paper outlines the early stages of a transnational investigation connecting all ten UNESCO cities through comparative case study analysis. For six days in May 2011, a diverse group of 22 designers, artists and researchers from seven countries explored Montréal’s designation as a design capital. …

System Site Patient: A Three-Tiered Methodological Approach To Constructing Holistic Understanding Of The User Through Design Research, Tara Mullaney, Helena Pettersson, Tufve Nyholm

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper argues that the methods and methodologies used to conduct user research often provide a singular view of the user. It aims to demonstrate that by combining the strengths of three different research methodologies into a structured, correlative research platform we can create a rich, more holistic understanding of our users. Using a three-tiered methodological approach to research the cancer patient experience, we investigated patient anxiety and the emotional impact that curative radiation therapy has on these individuals. Our methodology, comprised of methods taken from quantitative, qualitative, and design research approaches, was designed to construct a research platform that …

Visual Analysis Of Human Behavior Based On Vector Field And Landscape Diagram, Ichiro Nagasaka, Masashige Motoe Jul 2012

Visual Analysis Of Human Behavior Based On Vector Field And Landscape Diagram, Ichiro Nagasaka, Masashige Motoe

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The understanding of individual movement in a given space is important in many areas such as geography, architecture, and city planning. With recent advances in sensor and computing technology, trajectory data, series of coordinate data with timing, can be readily obtained and used to help us understand the characteristics of the space. However, the interpretation of patterns becomes difficult as the number of paths increases with the number of individuals examined. In this study, we intend to contribute to the development of a schematic landscape diagram of the space-time paths for movement analysis by firstly observing individual activities in an …

Drawing Out: How Designers Analyse Written Texts In Visual Ways, Zoë Sadokierski, Kate Sweetapple Jul 2012

Drawing Out: How Designers Analyse Written Texts In Visual Ways, Zoë Sadokierski, Kate Sweetapple

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper discusses the methods practitioner-researchers use to analyse written texts. Much attention towards the written word in design discourse is directed at typography – how words are used visually to communicate meaning. This paper considers the written word from a different perspective. Here, we aim to reveal how designers analyse written texts for research and ideation. We describe a range of methods we have developed through our own research and practice, as well as analytical approaches other practitioner-researchers use. There are many approaches to the analysis of texts – for example, semiotic (Kress and van Leeuwen 2001, 2006), content …

The Evergreen Approach To Design Research: Maximizing The Value Of User Experience Data, Adisorn Supawatanakul, Anne Schorr Jul 2012

The Evergreen Approach To Design Research: Maximizing The Value Of User Experience Data, Adisorn Supawatanakul, Anne Schorr

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design research projects are often framed around specific objectives, for example, product initiatives or marketing strategies. Due to limited budgets and tight timeframes, most design research projects are narrowly focused, isolated inquiries into specific activities, products, services or phases of the development process. An ethnographic approach to design research can provide a holistic understanding of users, their routines, motivations, and beliefs that extend beyond the original research intent and provide a much broader view on customer needs and business opportunities. Learning to extend the utility of research data beyond the scope of the initial project can become a great organizational …

Imagined Subjects: Polygamy, Gender And Nation In Nia Dinata’S Love For Share, Grace V. S. Chin Jul 2012

Imagined Subjects: Polygamy, Gender And Nation In Nia Dinata’S Love For Share, Grace V. S. Chin

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this paper, I explore polygamy in Nia Dinata’s Indonesian film, Love for Share, and how it can be used as a key signifier to analyze the construction of gendered subjects, identities and relations in the phallocentric discourses of family and nation. In Indonesia, the family structure is inherently patriarchal and hierarchical in nature, one which exhorts wives to stay at home while husbands are seen as breadwinners and whose roles are non-domestic. However, women are doubly marginalized in Indonesia as their subordinate status in the domestic space is reified at the national level through the state ideology of the …

Fostering Ecological Citizenship: The Case Of Environmental Service-Learning In Costa Rica, Jennifer Rebecca Kelly, Troy D. Abel Jul 2012

Fostering Ecological Citizenship: The Case Of Environmental Service-Learning In Costa Rica, Jennifer Rebecca Kelly, Troy D. Abel

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The intent of this study was to explore how experiential education fosters ecological or environmental citizenship. In this context, we investigated the impact of international environmental service-learning in a college course. Specifically our research question was does environmental service-learning have an effect on ecological citizenship? Using a multimethod approach of both qualitative and quantitative instruments our study drew on 13 participant interviews, 19 student journals and 10 survey responses. Employing variables from the Value-Belief-Norm Theory our findings suggest that environmental service-learning experiences impact both awareness of environmental consequences and personal normative beliefs. We conclude that ecological citizenship was indirectly impacted …

Influencing Student Beliefs About The Role Of The Civil Engineer In Society, Susan Nesbit, Robert Sianchuk, Jolanta Aleksejuniene, Rebecca Kindiak Jul 2012

Influencing Student Beliefs About The Role Of The Civil Engineer In Society, Susan Nesbit, Robert Sianchuk, Jolanta Aleksejuniene, Rebecca Kindiak

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study suggests that community service learning experiences facilitate the reconstruction of civil engineering student beliefs about both the type of work performed by civil engineers and the broad impact of civil engineering knowledge. Further, the service learning experiences highlight for students 1) the importance of relationships between people, 2) the value of variations in perspective, and 3) the responsibilities of civil engineers in society as holders of expert knowledge. Meta-cognitive and self-regulated learning activities may be the mechanisms by which student beliefs evolve during service learning. Therefore, the quality of community service learning experiences may be enhanced by increasing …

Reflections On A Teaching Commons Regarding Diversity And Inclusive Pedagogy, Michelle Glowacki-Dudka, Jennifer Murray, David Concepción Jul 2012

Reflections On A Teaching Commons Regarding Diversity And Inclusive Pedagogy, Michelle Glowacki-Dudka, Jennifer Murray, David Concepción

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Recently, twenty-one instructors at a Midwestern university participated in a faculty development seminar entitled, “Developing Pedagogies to Enhance Excellence and Diversity.” They designed a pedagogical change for the following academic year based on the workshop. During the following year, we collected data on the workshop participants through surveys and interviews to discover if they had implemented the proposed changes and what they discovered in the process. Thirteen of the twenty-one participants responded to our request for information and nine implemented their proposed changes during our data collection. Reviewing the data, we found three areas where participants made changes: application of …

When Black Meets White In The Heart Of Worship: A Case-Study Of Musical Changes In A Multiracial Church, Serge Volpe Jul 2012

When Black Meets White In The Heart Of Worship: A Case-Study Of Musical Changes In A Multiracial Church, Serge Volpe

Masters Theses

The Worldwide Church of God began as a denomination relying on certain Jewish practices and other Euro-centric distinctions to define its' identity. In the New York City area, African-American churchgoers exceeded that of whites; yet church liturgy retained its European-American flavor. When the denomination underwent transformation in the 1990s, many congregants were unable to accept changes, including new musical styles, and reacted in a manner inconsistent with what church leaders had hoped for. This thesis examines what some African-Americans experienced during this period when liturgy changed to include music representative of their culture. Interviews were conducted with African-American churchgoers from …

A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski Jul 2012

A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation studies failures in the U.S. banking industry following the 2008 financial crisis. The dissertation offers an exhaustive review of the organizational failure literature, and changes in the banking industry environment over the past century. It takes three theoretical perspectives - institutional, industrial organization and resource-based view- to analyze failures in the banking industry.

The review and analysis allows me to trace the roots of recent bank failures to external (institutional, competitive) and internal (resource structure, strategy, risk) factors, and propose several hypotheses linking such factors with failures. The hypotheses are tested using a data-set that included all bank …

All Is Fair In War---Violent Conflict And The Securitization Of Rape, Sabine Hirschauer Jul 2012

All Is Fair In War---Violent Conflict And The Securitization Of Rape, Sabine Hirschauer

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Systematic mass rape during conflict has for centuries met with global ignorance and political complacency despite its atrocious character. The conflicts in Bosnia and Rwanda in the 1990s altered the silence surrounding this long tolerated, dark underbelly of war. Applying Barry Buzan's and Ole Waever'sSecuritization Theory to the cases of Bosnia and Rwanda, this dissertation finds that rape during both wars was successfully securitized. Securitization Theory as a model and indicator of an effective shifting of rape from an apolitical or political perspective into the security realm was appropriate. Bosnia initiated the first convictions of rape as a …

Seasonal Photoperiods Alter Developmental Time And Mass Of An Invasive Mosquito, Aedes Albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae), Across Its North-South Range In The United States, Steven A. Juliano, Donald A. Yee, Steven M. Vamosi Jul 2012

Seasonal Photoperiods Alter Developmental Time And Mass Of An Invasive Mosquito, Aedes Albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae), Across Its North-South Range In The United States, Steven A. Juliano, Donald A. Yee, Steven M. Vamosi

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse), is perhaps the most successful invasive mosquito species in contemporary history. In the United States, Ae. albopictus has spread from its introduction point in southern Texas to as far north as New Jersey (i.e., a span of approximate to 14 degrees latitude). This species experiences seasonal constraints in activity because of cold temperatures in winter in the northern United States, but is active year-round in the south. We performed a laboratory experiment to examine how life-history traits of Ae. albopictus from four populations (New Jersey [39.4 degrees N], Virginia [38.6 degrees N], North …
