Changing Aid Policies Through A Gender Lens: An International Perspective And The Case Of The Dutch Development Cooperation, Nathalie Holvoet, Liesbeth Inberg

Journal of International Women's Studies

Since the turn of the century changes in aid policies and modalities have been proposed with the aim to promote aid effectiveness. This article is a study on the ongoing reform processes within partner and donor countries as seen through a gender lens. It explores more closely how changing aid policies unfold opportunities and challenges for gender mainstreaming policies and gender equality objective. The article analyses in particular how donors are handling gender concerns in the realm of the ongoing changes and zooms into the case of Dutch Development Cooperation, one of change champions. Such a gendered analysis of aid …

Engaging With Tradition: Mechanisms, Strategies, And Tactics, Michael Edwards Jul 2012

Engaging With Tradition: Mechanisms, Strategies, And Tactics, Michael Edwards

Center for Gender & Sexuality Law

The relationships between tradition and social justice are complex and contingent, conditioned by many factors including social context, individual attachments and mechanisms of transmission and re-enactment. These relationships may be positive, negative or neutral from the perspective of LGBT concerns, and they may be approached in a variety of different ways according to the goals and circumstances at hand. The Engaging Tradition Project aims to explore these patterns in order to establish when and why tradition forms a barrier to the achievement of gender and sexual justice, and to identify how tradition can be deployed in positive ways by activists …

Playing Without Aces: Offset And The Limits Of Flexibility Under Clean Air Act Climate Policy, Nathan D. Richardson Jul 2012

Playing Without Aces: Offset And The Limits Of Flexibility Under Clean Air Act Climate Policy, Nathan D. Richardson

Faculty Publications

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to move ahead with regulation of greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act (CAA). Previous work has indicated that basic forms of compliance flexibility—trading—appear to be legally permissible under section III of the CAA. This Article takes a close look at more expansive and ambitious types of flexibility: trading between different kinds of sources, biomass co-firing, and above all, offsets. It concludes that most types of such extended flexibility are either legally incompatible with the CAA, or so legally problematic that EPA is unlikely to adopt them. This has important implications …

The Future’S Epic Now: The Time Of Security And Risk In Don Delillo’S Cosmopolis, Johannes Voelz Jul 2012

The Future’S Epic Now: The Time Of Security And Risk In Don Delillo’S Cosmopolis, Johannes Voelz

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In this essay I aim to reflect upon the cultural life of security in our contemporary moment. Doing so requires extending security beyond its essentially political functions, i.e., going beyond the currently dominant perspective according to which security is first and foremost an affective and ideological tool of legitimating states of exception. [1] The remarkable success of (in)security — understood as both a concept and a logic — is often explained by its presumed function to manipulate us into accepting untrammeled state power and the loss of civil liberties. If we are not satisfied with this explanation, we …

From The Margins To The Middle: Making Room For Visual Rhetoric In The Composition Classroom, Montyne H. Morris Jul 2012

From The Margins To The Middle: Making Room For Visual Rhetoric In The Composition Classroom, Montyne H. Morris

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

This study examines the potential role of visuals in a first-year composition classroom. Essential theoretical questions include whether visual images have rhetorical power, and specifically, whether they can sustain an argument. If we suppose that visual images, like verbal texts, can be arranged to create or extend an argument, then the inclusion of visuals in a writing classroom becomes a question not of if but of how. Study findings and recommendations are relevant for first-year writing instructors, administrators, and others involved in the design and delivery of first-year writing programs.

Urban Security And Collapse: Fringe’S Portrayal Of The American City As A Site Of Terror In The 21st Century, Sophie Halliday Jul 2012

Urban Security And Collapse: Fringe’S Portrayal Of The American City As A Site Of Terror In The 21st Century, Sophie Halliday

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Upon its series debut, television critic Matt Roush stated that Fringe (2008- ) should be re-titled “Cringe” due to its “grisly twists” and “mumbo-jumbo science” content that was merely reminiscent of The X-Files (1993-2002) (Roush). He was not alone. Elsewhere Travis Fickett agreed, labelling Fringe as “derivative” and stating that “the ground it covers has been covered elsewhere and better...at the end of the day, it's hard to imagine that Fringe will ever blow anyone's mind” (Fickett). As an FBI procedural depicting paranormal incidents with an underlying current of conspiracy, Fringe’s blend of science fiction and horror …

Opportunistic Discipline: Using Eurasian Integration To Improve Sanctions Against Belarus, Ilya Zlatkin Jul 2012

Opportunistic Discipline: Using Eurasian Integration To Improve Sanctions Against Belarus, Ilya Zlatkin

Law Student Publications

This comment does not condemn or condone the Lukashenko regime's policies. Instead, it evaluates the effectiveness of the U.S. sanctions and provides some feasible alternatives. Also, this comment avoids normative arguments against sanctions, concentrating more on the probable economic and political effects. Part II supplies background information on the political developments within Belarus since the Soviet Union's collapse, including prior sanctions that the West imposed. Part III explains why the United States can legally institute sanctions. Parts IV and V discuss how American sanctions facilitate appropriation of significant Belarusian state assets by Russia and China, respectively. Part VI posits that …

Toward A Culture Of Healing: Why Alternative Therapies And A Feminist Framework Are Needed In The Care Of Pregnant Women And Treatment Of Postpartum Mood Disorders, Angela Leonardo Jul 2012

Toward A Culture Of Healing: Why Alternative Therapies And A Feminist Framework Are Needed In The Care Of Pregnant Women And Treatment Of Postpartum Mood Disorders, Angela Leonardo

Anthós

Pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood are areas of human development that have systematically migrated away from their roots as a series of natural life events to a highly, and perhaps unnecessarily, medicalized arena. This shift has been detrimental for women, especially for poor, socially isolated, single, and/or ethnic minority women. In this paper, I outline my concerns with the increased medicalization of birth and postpartum care, as well as with the status of mothers in the United States, and critically examine the patriarchal context in which this shift has occurred. My focus is on maternal health and mortality, including depression …

Role Of The Creative Sector In The Metropolitan Economy: A Portland Case Study (Draft), Sheila A. Martin, Katherine Krajnak

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

This paper takes a much broader approach than do typical economic impact studies in order to describe and illustrate the mechanisms through which creative activity and creative industries contribute to the regional economy. We examine how these industries are linked to and supportive of other sectors of the economy. In addition, we broaden the definition of ?creative services? to include the arts, culture, and entertainment industries, all of which comprise the ?creative sector.?

Rocky Mountain Refuge: Constructing "Colorado" In Science Fiction, Carl Abbott Jul 2012

Rocky Mountain Refuge: Constructing "Colorado" In Science Fiction, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Colorado has long functioned in American culture as the epitome of the American West, identified both as a safe refuge and as a place for starting over. This essay examines the ways in which writers of speculative fiction have drawn on Colorado's historically constructed identity as the setting for stories of refuge and retreat. The discussion examines parallels in the use of the Colorado setting by sf writers Robert A. Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, Walter M. Miller, Jr., Leigh Brackett, and Ursula K. LeGuin, by political novelist Ayn Rand, and by mainstream thriller writers Stephen King and Justin Cronin. The …

Life Cycle Boundaries And Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Beef Cattle, Quentin M. Dudley Jul 2012

Life Cycle Boundaries And Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Beef Cattle, Quentin M. Dudley

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Beef cattle are estimated to directly contribute 26% of U.S. agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and future climate change policy may target reducing these emissions. Life cycle assessment (LCA) of GHG emissions from U.S. feedlot beef cattle was conducted to compare methods of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a more complete evaluation of emissions. The inclusion of emissions from crop production for feed, associated land use change, and other minor factors nearly doubled GHG emissions associated with beef feedlots from the EPA Annual Inventory estimate of 1611 kgCO2e hd-1 yr-1 to 3182 ± 167 …

Achieving A Sustainable Transport Sector In The Uk: The Effect Of Uk Transport Reform And Change In Population's Travel Decisions On The Reduction Of Energy Consumption And Co2 Emission Within The Transport Sector, Jessica Herring Jul 2012

Achieving A Sustainable Transport Sector In The Uk: The Effect Of Uk Transport Reform And Change In Population's Travel Decisions On The Reduction Of Energy Consumption And Co2 Emission Within The Transport Sector, Jessica Herring

The Plymouth Student Scientist

With the onset of climate change and diminishing global energy supplies, it is a concern that global fuel demand, energy consumption and carbon release are increasing. The transport sector is one of the largest contributors to environmental pressure and degradation, yet it is making a very limited contribution to carbon emission and energy reliance reduction. This paper presents a critique of the UK approach to transport sustainability, focusing mainly on aspects of an unsuccessful transport scheme; Transport 2010, whilst analysing three reform approaches stated in Haan et al (2007) study; reducing demand, energy intensity and carbon intensity to conclude with …

The Nature And Role Of Physical Models In Enhancing Sixth Grade Students' Mental Models Of Groundwater And Groundwater Processes, Debra Lynne Foster Duffy Jul 2012

The Nature And Role Of Physical Models In Enhancing Sixth Grade Students' Mental Models Of Groundwater And Groundwater Processes, Debra Lynne Foster Duffy

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

Through a non-experimental descriptive and comparative mixed-methods approach, this study investigated the experiences of sixth grade earth science students with groundwater physical models through an extended SE learning cycle format. The data collection was based on a series of quantitative and qualitative research tools intended to investigate students' ideas and changes in ideas rather than measure their achievement. The measures included a groundwater survey, classroom observations, and one-on-one follow-up student interviews for triangulation of data sources. The research was carried out at a K-12 independent school in eastern Virginia using two classes of sixth grade earth science students (n=30).

“This Intense Desire To Know The World”: Factors Influencing The Selection Of Multicultural Children's Literature, Kasey L. Garrison Jul 2012

“This Intense Desire To Know The World”: Factors Influencing The Selection Of Multicultural Children's Literature, Kasey L. Garrison

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

Multicultural children's literature offers readers the opportunity to experience new perspectives and cultures or reaffirm and develop their socio-cultural identity (Boston & Baxley, 2007; Yokota, 2009). The availability of diverse titles for youth is critical in enhancing 21st Century literacy and social skills (AASL, 2007; Common Core, 2010; Krashen, 2004). The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing collection development and the selection of multicultural children's literature in public library collections in geographically and demographically diverse communities across one southeastern state.

Employing a mixed methods design, the researcher first surveyed ten library system collections totaling 70 libraries …

How First Mover Advantages And Agglomeration Economies Affect Foreign Entry Survival, Jing'an Tang, Ben S. Liu Jul 2012

How First Mover Advantages And Agglomeration Economies Affect Foreign Entry Survival, Jing'an Tang, Ben S. Liu

WCBT Faculty Publications

While entry timing literatures suggest firms to enter a foreign market as pioneers to gain the first mover advantages, studies on entry locations recommend firms to enter a market where there is already a critical mass of their peers, i.e., to be late movers in order to benefit from the agglomeration effects. As two important dimensions of foreign entry strategy, entry timing and location literatures seem to offer opposite recommendations. To resolve this apparent paradox, this study builds a network-based foreign entry and performance model. We argue that these two dimensions of market entry are interdependent. Entry strategies that can …

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Few studies have explored value similarities and differences between private sector managers in Latin countries like Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil and the Philippines. These countries were former colonies of either Spain or Portugal or both. In our study, we found that managers from the Philippines, Argentina, and Brazil were more alike as they were classified as possessing High Personal and High Moral value orientations, while managers from Colombia and Mexico were most alike as they possessed a High Personal and High Competence value orientations. We discuss the implications of these findings, limitations of the study, and make recommendations for …

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

“Culture and Identity in your Community and the World” is an interdisciplinary unit designed to stimulate questions about identity and culture and how those two things relate. This unit is meant to be taught at the end of the first semester and the beginning of the second semester. Students have already established an understanding of literary elements in fiction and will now be searching for those same engaging elements in non-fiction.

As the students read the memoir Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang in Reading, they will be studying the effects of culture and community on a single person’s identity …
