Past Forward: Roots And Recovery In The American City, Justin G. Moore Sep 2012

Past Forward: Roots And Recovery In The American City, Justin G. Moore

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Today’s focus on the development of "sustainable” communities as being critical to the recovery of the economy and the challenge of maintaining our high standard of living raises important questions: What is sustainable environmentally, economically, and socially? Who will be a part of the future economy and how will they participate? Or, in general, what do we mean by progress? Cities are resilient places of memory, and along with nature, can be our greatest teachers. Perhaps our cities’, and their inhabitants’, promise and progress for the future just may have something to do with their recovered past. In researching my …

Mapping Civil Society: An Experiment In Ngo Coordination, Peter Carroll, Aradhana Dhakal, Madeleine Gleave Sep 2012

Mapping Civil Society: An Experiment In Ngo Coordination, Peter Carroll, Aradhana Dhakal, Madeleine Gleave

Library Research Grants

Our research considers the efficiency of the work of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the area of international development. Specifically it asks the question of whether reducing the costs of gathering information on other NGO projects increases NGOs’ propensity to coordinate among each other. We predict that decreasing information costs associated with communication gives greater incentive to pursue coordination. To test this hypothesis, we conduct a randomized field experiment in which we invite randomly assigned NGOs to use an online mapping tool providing information about NGO activities across Uganda and India. Our sample comes from NGOs that complete a survey on …

Heavy Metal Chemistry Of Sediments In Caves Of The Springfield Plateau, Missouri-Arkansas-Oklahoma: A Link To Subterranean Biodiversity, Travis M. Doughty, Aaron W. Johnson Sep 2012

Heavy Metal Chemistry Of Sediments In Caves Of The Springfield Plateau, Missouri-Arkansas-Oklahoma: A Link To Subterranean Biodiversity, Travis M. Doughty, Aaron W. Johnson

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

We used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to compare the heavy metal chemistry of sediments in caves in rural and urban areas to the chemistry of sediments from a control cave in a relatively undisturbed watershed in the Springfield (MO) Plateau. Sediment from Smallin Cave near Ozark, MO, the control cave, has the smallest peak sizes for Zn and Mn and a moderately-sized Pb peak. Sediment from the rural cave exhibited larger peaks of Zn and Mn and a smaller Pb peak. Sediment from the urban cave had the largest Zn, Mn and Pb peaks. Interestingly, smaller peak sizes appear to correlate …

Undergraduate Research Posters 2012

Reality TV viewers expect a naturalistic environment in which relatively ordinary people interact with each other. However, much of reality TV is contrived by producers, and the extent to which they manipulate it can shape viewer responses. Findings will inform scholarship on reality TV, creative geography, and spatial presence.

Social Work In A Very Rural Place: A Study Of Practitioners In The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, Paul Force-Emery Mackie Msw, Phd Sep 2012

Social Work In A Very Rural Place: A Study Of Practitioners In The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, Paul Force-Emery Mackie Msw, Phd

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

This study focuses on characteristics, challenges, and benefits of practicing social work in the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. Using a mixed-methods design, data were analyzed to determine demographic descriptors, seek differences between groups, and learn why social workers pursue and remain in social service employment in the UP. In addition, challenges and benefits of rural practice and perceptions of living and working in this region are addressed. Quantitatively, differences were found between younger and older social workers regarding where they currently live and where they grew up, and whether or not they were raised in a rural location. Qualitative …

Preserving Human Capital: Using The Noncompete Agreement To Achieve Competitive Advantage, Griffin Toronjo Pivateau Sep 2012

Preserving Human Capital: Using The Noncompete Agreement To Achieve Competitive Advantage, Griffin Toronjo Pivateau

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

Organizations today face numerous challenges: worldwide competitors, changes in information technology, increased reliance on knowledge workers, and a shifting economic environment. Faced with the difficulty of securing advantage by traditional means, management has increasingly focused on employees as a key asset and driver of productivity. Many organizations have adopted the human capital theory, which holds that employees form an asset of the organization. Organizations will seek to maximize their human capital as a differentiator. Presumably, an organization that invests in its human capital will find itself rewarded with increased productivity and higher returns. But here is where the problem develops. …

Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton Sep 2012

Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton

The Psychological Record

Human geography is a social science concerned primarily with data-based analyses and the utilization of various theoretical constructs mostly developed in other social science disciplines. A discussion of the character of human geography supports the suggestion that human geographic analyses of landscapes will benefit from employment of additional theories, specifically from a judicious interpretation and application of work in behavior analysis. Human landscape-making behavior can be explained using the concepts and principles of behavior analysis as developed in psychology and as applied in sociology and anthropology. For human geographers, this suggestion is at variance with most other recent conceptual contributions …

The Service Use Index: A Tool For Examining Rural/Urban Differences, Rosemary K. Chapin Ph.D., Beth Anne Baca Msw, Skye N. Leedahl Ma, Roxanne Rachlin Mhsa, Xanthippe Wedel Bs, Mary K. Zimmerman Phd

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Development of tools for identifying and tracking differences in older adult service utilization by race, ethnicity, income, and geographic area is vital in the face of current demographic and economic changes in rural areas, particularly in areas experiencing rapid demographic changes. In this conceptual article, we explain how to calculate a service use index that compares service utilization of a specific group of older adults to that of the entire older adult population. We then illustrate its usefulness with a case example using geographic information systems (GIS). This unique approach can be utilized to understand differences across fields of practice, …

Energy Storage Characteristics Of A New Rechargeable Solid Oxide Iron-Air Battery, Xuan Zhao, Nansheng Xu, Xue Li, Yunhui Gong, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

Cost effective and large scale energy storage is critical to renewable energy integration and smart-grid energy infrastructure. Rechargeable batteries have great potential to become a class of cost effective technology suited for large scale energy storage. In this paper, we report the energy storage characteristics of a newly developed rechargeable solid oxide iron–air battery. Investigations of the battery’s performance under various current densities and cycle durations show that iron utilization plays a determining role in storage capacity and round-trip efficiency. Further studies of the battery's cycle life reveal a unique charge-cycle originated degradation mechanism that can be interpreted by a …
