Knowledge of environmental factors influencing demography of weed species will improve understanding of current and future weed invasions. The objective of this study was to quantify regional-scale variation in vital rates of giant ragweed and common sunflower. To accomplish this objective, a common field experiment was conducted across seven sites between 2006 and 2008 throughout the north central U.S. maize belt. Demographic parameters of both weed species were measured in intra- and interspecific competitive environments, and environmental data were collected within site-years. Site was the strongest predictor of belowground vital rates (summer and winter seed survival and seedling recruitment), indicating …

The Tradition Of Separate Burials In Ireland: Cilliní And Place, Emma Pankey Sep 2012

The Tradition Of Separate Burials In Ireland: Cilliní And Place, Emma Pankey

Spectrum

Ireland’s historical use of separate burial places for the interment of unbaptized children followed the traditional teachings and prohibitions of the Catholic Church. Specifically, Canon 1239 stated that infants who died prior to having undergone the rite of baptism were prohibited from being buried in a blessed cemetery (Woywod 1957:51). Church theology holds that unbaptized individuals exist in separation from the rest of the Catholic community on multiple temporal and spatial scales. In life, unbaptized individuals cannot receive ecclesiastical rites and in death their remains are separated from consecrated burial grounds as a reflection of the belief that they are …

Analysis Of A Genetic Isolate: The Case Of Carloforte (Italy), R. Robledo, L. Corrias, V. Bachis, N. Puddu, A. Mameli, G. Vona, C. M. Calò Sep 2012

Analysis Of A Genetic Isolate: The Case Of Carloforte (Italy), R. Robledo, L. Corrias, V. Bachis, N. Puddu, A. Mameli, G. Vona, C. M. Calò

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

We reviewed data collected during several studies concerning the genetic isolate of Carloforte (Sardinia, Italy) and analyzed new data on Y-chromosome markers. Carloforte is also a language island, where people still speaks Tabarchino, an archaic form of Ligurian dialect. Demographic data indicate that, in the early years of its history, Carloforte population was characterized by a high degree of endogamy and consanguinity rates that started to decrease around 1850, when marriages with Sardinian people began to occur more frequently. Cultural factors, mainly language, account for the high endogamy. Genetic data from classical markers, mtDNA and Ychromosome markers confirmed the strong …

Theory, Locality, And Methodology In Archaeology: Just Add Water?, William H. Krieger Sep 2012

Theory, Locality, And Methodology In Archaeology: Just Add Water?, William H. Krieger

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Continuing the work of the ‘Vienna Circle’, philosopher Carl Hempel created explanatory models to ground scientific inquiry in logic and empirical truth. Beginning with the physical sciences, he explored the application of these models to the social sciences as well. Terrestrial archaeologists incorporated Hempelian concepts by calling for global changes in archaeological methodology. These changes, explicitly designed to maximize data collection (a necessary first step to develop archaeological general laws crucial to Hempelian explanation and confirmation), were developed using particular idiosyncratic geographical cues that would undermine archaeology if implemented in other contexts. In this article, I argue that similarly unconscious …

Acid phosphatase (ACP1) is a polymorphic enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of flavinmononucleotide (FMN) to riboflavin and regulates the cellular concentration of flavin-adeninedinucleotide (FAD) and, consequently, energy metabolism. Its activity is modulated by adenosine deaminase (ADA1) genotype. Aim of our work is to verify whether individuals with a high proportion of ACP1 f isozyme and carrying ADA*2 allele, displaying the highest phosphatase activity, may have a higher life expectancy. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood of 569 females and 509 males (18-106 years) randomly recruited from Central Italy. These samples were subdivided into three sexspecific age groups …

A Study Of Data Mining Trend Through The Optimized Bibliometric Methodology Based On Sci Database From 1993 To 2011, Lu Dai, Lixin Ding, Yunwen Lei, Yangge Tian

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

An optimized bibliometric method was applied in this work to evaluate global scientific production of data mining papers of the Science Citation Index (SCI). In compared with traditional bibliometric keyword analysis, a semantic words class was established by applying the text extraction mode to remove noise in the abstract and combining with the core relative phrases retrieved from keywords to get the sample for further experiment. The analysis shows a high correlation between title and keywords, and the title reports less information than keywords does. Also, keywords provide more positive guidance to know and be familiar with the status and …

Front Speed Of Language Replacement, Joaquim Fort, Joaquim Pérez-Losada Sep 2012

Front Speed Of Language Replacement, Joaquim Fort, Joaquim Pérez-Losada

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

We use two coupled equations to analyze the space-time dynamics of two interacting languages. Firstly, we introduce a cohabitation model, which is more appropriate for human populations than classical (non-cohabitation) models. Secondly, using numerical simulations we …nd the front speed of a new language spreading into a region where another language was previously used. Thirdly, for a special case we derive an analytical formula that makes it possible to check the validity of our numerical simulations. Finally, as an example, we …nd that the observed front speed for the spread of the English language into Wales in the period 1961-1981 …

Extensive Population Structure In San, Khoe And Mixed Ancestry Populations From Southern Africa Revealed By 44 Short 5-Snp Haplotypes, Carina M. Schlebusch, Himla Soodyall Sep 2012

Extensive Population Structure In San, Khoe And Mixed Ancestry Populations From Southern Africa Revealed By 44 Short 5-Snp Haplotypes, Carina M. Schlebusch, Himla Soodyall

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The San and Khoe people currently represent remnant groups of a much larger and widely distributed population of hunter gatherers and pastoralists who had exclusive occupation of southern Africa before the arrival of Bantu-speaking groups in the past 1,200 years and sea-borne immigrants within the last 350 years. Genetic studies (mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome) conducted on San and Khoe groups revealed that they harbour some the most divergent lineages found in living peoples throughout the world. Recently, high-density autosomal SNP-array studies confirmed the early divergence of Khoe-San population groups from all other human populations. The present study made use of …

A Tale Of Two Haplotypes: The Eda2r/Ar Intergenic Region Is The Most Divergent Genomic Segment Between Africans And East Asians In The Human Genome, Amanda M. Casto, Brenna M. Henn, Jeffery M. Kidd, Carlos D. Bustamante, Marcus W. Feldman Sep 2012

A Tale Of Two Haplotypes: The Eda2r/Ar Intergenic Region Is The Most Divergent Genomic Segment Between Africans And East Asians In The Human Genome, Amanda M. Casto, Brenna M. Henn, Jeffery M. Kidd, Carlos D. Bustamante, Marcus W. Feldman

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with large allele frequency differences between human populations are relatively rare. The longest run of SNPs with an allele frequency difference of one between the Yoruba of Nigeria and the Han Chinese is found on the long arm of the X chromosome in the intergenic region separating the EDA2R and AR genes. It has been proposed that the unusual allele frequency distributions of these SNPs are the result of a selective sweep affecting African populations that occurred after the Out-of-Africa migration. To investigate the evolutionary history of the EDA2R/AR intergenic region, we characterized the haplotype structure …

Is China A Responsible Developing Country? Climate Change Diplomacy And National Image Building, Sanna Kopra Sep 2012

Is China A Responsible Developing Country? Climate Change Diplomacy And National Image Building, Sanna Kopra

Global Asia Journal

A state’s image is an important resource for wielding national power in global politics. Its prestige and reputation often influence the interactions with other states. As an emerging superpower, China is under pressure to shoulder more responsibility for tackling global climate change. The West has criticized China as a “climate criminal” that threatens global climate stability. In response, the Chinese government implemented a series of comprehensive programs to improve its image abroad. This paper examines China’s national image building in the realm of international climate politics. It draws on the official rhetoric and policy statements to discuss the innovative strategies …

Felt Space: Responsive Textiles, Fabric Dwellings And Precarious Housing, Kirsty Robertson Sep 2012

Felt Space: Responsive Textiles, Fabric Dwellings And Precarious Housing, Kirsty Robertson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Recently, a number of architects and designers working with smart textiles and responsive architecture, have created projects that re-imagine architectural and domesticate space as deeply and emotionally imbricated in the lives of its inhabitants and occupants. These projects suggest an ambient felt space that has untapped possibility for creating communities of sentiment that might in turn offer a radical potential for rethinking both space and connection. In each case, works draw on new and old technologies, and also on an etymology of networking built directly into the language of textiles - the material, the interwoven, the connective, the tissue. From …

The Politics Of Pastoralism: Navajos, Churras And The Challenges Of Sustainability In A Globalizing World, Kathy A. M'Closkey Sep 2012

The Politics Of Pastoralism: Navajos, Churras And The Challenges Of Sustainability In A Globalizing World, Kathy A. M'Closkey

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Navajos, or Dine', were dramatically affected by rapid changes in two of the three largest post- Civil War domestic industries: agriculture and textiles. In my 2010 TSA paper, I revealed how changes in the wool tariff triggered an escalation in textile production by thousands of Navajo weavers, as traders sought ways to market the unstandardized wool clip. Another under researched aspect of Navajo history concerns how the federal government's haphazard attempts in up-breeding Navajo flocks to national market standards triggered a failed development policy, resulting in the reduction of one-half their livestock during the Depression. For sixty years the government …

Friends, Family, Or Fools: Entrepreneur Experience And Its Implications For Equity Distribution And Resource Mobilization, Reddi Kotha, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Who helps entrepreneurs raise the resources they need and how much equity does an entrepreneur distribute in return? We use a sample of 611 entrepreneurs in the U.S. to examine why some entrepreneurs are more likely than others to distribute ownership selectively to helpers. We find that entrepreneurs with specific industry experience and start-up experience are able to provide ownership more selectively and raise more resources from their helpers. We refine the categorization of social ties further to make a distinction between professional and familial ties to show that the ownership distribution and types of resource contributions vary by the …

Central Place Theory And City Size Distribution, Wen-Tai Hsu Sep 2012

Central Place Theory And City Size Distribution, Wen-Tai Hsu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper proposes a theory of city size distribution via a hierarchy approach rather than the popular random growth process. It does so by formalizing central place theory using an equilibrium entry model and specifying the conditions under which city size distribution follows a power law. Central place theory describes the way in which a hierarchical city system with different layers of cities serving differently sized market areas is formed from a uniformly populated space. The force driving the city size differences in this model is the heterogeneity in economies of scale across goods. The city size distribution under a …

Not With My Own: Long-Term Effects Of Cross-Country Collaboration On Subsidiary Innovation In Emerging Economies Versus Advanced Economies, Tufool Alnuaimi, Jasjit Singh, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Prior literature has established that international collaboration on R&D is an important means for generating new and impactful ideas through the cross-border integration of knowledge. We show that cross-country collaboration improves not just the resulting ideas, but also has a long-term benefit for the involved inventors in terms of continuing to generate higher-impact ideas in the future. However, our results also show that the improved performance of specific inventors in a multinational corporation subsidiary does not translate to broader subsidiary-level capabilities at innovation. One possible explanation might be that inventors obtaining international exposure often do not develop collaborative ties with …
