Cartographie Des Lieux D’Exposition À Paris, De 1850 À Nos Jours, Félicie De Maupeou, Léa Saint-Raymond

Artl@s Bulletin

In the ARTL@S project, a select team of researchers is dedicated to map-ping exposition spaces from the mid-19th century to contemporary times. This article traces the implementa-tion of this project, the methods used (i.e. what is the point of cartographic illustrations for this study?), initial results, and provides an intermediary assessment of the project, calling for further development of these map-ping tools and the pursuit of future research.

Mapping The Reception Of American Art In Postwar Western Europe, Catherine Dossin Sep 2012

Mapping The Reception Of American Art In Postwar Western Europe, Catherine Dossin

Artl@s Bulletin

This article presents a project launched by a multidisciplinary team based at Purdue University in part-nership with ARTL@S. The ambition is to map the diffusion of American art in postwar Western Europe by recov-ering exhibitions that took place be-tween 1945 and 1970 and that fea-tured works by American Abstract Expressionist and American Pop art-ists. The results of this research will be featured on an interactive web ap-plication that will allow users to view the maps, zoom in on them, select art-ists or artworks, scroll through dates, and even create their own maps. It will thus be a great tool for …

La Cartographie Parisienne Du Répertoire Du Grand Théâtre De Lille (1821-1903), Matthieu Haroux Sep 2012

La Cartographie Parisienne Du Répertoire Du Grand Théâtre De Lille (1821-1903), Matthieu Haroux

Artl@s Bulletin

Between 1821 and 1903, the Grand Théâtre de Lille was the main arena of leisure and sociability of the north-ern French city of Lille. Successive directors, whose ambitions were to satisfy their clientele, chose works that were shown initially in Parisian theaters and, furthermore, increased the showings of the most popular ones. Mapping the Parisian birthplaces of such works allows us to learn more about Lille public, its taste, aspira-tions and relationship to Parisian cul-ture. Furthermore, it sheds light on existing cultural transfers between Paris and a provincial capital.

« Et Mon Père Signa Le Bail Qui L’Exilait De Paris ». Les Maisons D’Écrivain Au Prisme De La Cartographie, Marie-Clémence Régnier

Artl@s Bulletin

This article presents axes generated by car-tography for a study on writers’ houses from the 19th century onwards on various scales of analysis. The monographic scale, applied to Victor Hugo’s trajectory in Paris, questions the relationship between literary activity and urban areas. On a European scale, the study on the origins of writers’ houses and their establishment raises hypothesis on the spatial logics at stake. Finally, from a regional point of view, this study also allows us to interrogate the role of local political strategies to which these houses are nowadays subject.

« Le Paysagiste Du Haut D’Un Aéro ». Marcel Duchamp, Géographe En Guerre, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

Duchamp’s personal notes from 1914-1915 describe a strange project: to renew art by “a geographical landsca-pe, in the way of geographical maps” (« un paysagisme géographi-que à la façon des cartes géographi-que »). Why take up landscape painting again, while the avant-garde has done without it for a long time? Why be a geographer in 1914, while geography is used to wage war? In this paper we interpret Duchamp’s works and texts in the context of the First World War: discharged from military duty, the idle artist may have medi-tated on the evolution of European avant-gardism. His geographical pro-ject was …

Artl@S: A Spatial And Trans-National Art History Origins And Positions Of A Research Program, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

ARTL@S is a project on the spatial and trans-national history of the arts and humanities, based on the collaboration of quantitative methods and cartographic visualization. These two strategies fit into a perspective nourished by critical and sociological theory that, in short, aims to highlight not only the link between a work of art and its space, but also its underlying political, social, aesthetic or economic issues. From this standpoint, we have chosen to take advantage of what a digi-tal approach can offer: the constitution of da-tabases, quantitative analysis, graphic and geographic representations of data, as well as the Internet. In …

Artl@S And Basart: A Loose Coupling Strategy For Digital Humanities, Sorin A. Matei Sep 2012

Artl@S And Basart: A Loose Coupling Strategy For Digital Humanities, Sorin A. Matei

Artl@s Bulletin

The core ARTL@S digital humanities strategy is that of loosely coupling resources, platforms, and use scenar-ios. A number of sites will feed from the same geodatabase (BasArt), which will be enriched by users with new content. Inspired by the Web 2.0 design principles, ARTL@S relies on the BasArt API, which will enable an ecosystem of sites to use primary data to generate their own maps, charts, and tables. A variety of eco-nomic models will also be used to support the site, from free to pay-based. User-generated content will be monitored by data management and curation techniques that will ensure the …

« Ludimus Effigiem Belli », Guy Debord Stratège Et Cartographe, Emmanuel Guy Sep 2012

« Ludimus Effigiem Belli », Guy Debord Stratège Et Cartographe, Emmanuel Guy

Artl@s Bulletin

We know Guy Debord as a poet, a filmmaker, a revolutionary and a Marxist theorist. Here he is as a strategist and cartographer. This arti-cle examines Guy Debord’s A Game of War as a synthesis of his strategic and cartographic work, before returning to “situationist” maps to study the issues at hand in terms of strategy on several fronts: internally, within the Situationist International movement, or externally, to tackle the art world, urban policy, international geopoli-tics and, of course, the society of spec-tacle.

[1] The global tropospheric budget of gaseous and particulate non‐methane organic matter (OM) is re‐examined to provide a holistic view of the role that OM plays in transporting the essential nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus to the ocean. A global 3‐dimensional chemistry‐transport model was used to construct the first global picture of atmospheric transport and deposition of the organic nitrogen (ON) and organic phosphorus (OP) that are associated with OM, focusing on the soluble fractions of these nutrients. Model simulations agree with observations within an order of magnitude. Depending on location, the observed water soluble ON fraction ranges from ∼3% to …

When Hope Grows Weary: An Arkansas Delta Town In Place And Time, Cindy Lynn Grisham Sep 2012

When Hope Grows Weary: An Arkansas Delta Town In Place And Time, Cindy Lynn Grisham

Student Theses and Dissertations

Tyronza is a small community located in the Delta region of northeast Arkansas. It served as the birthplace of the nationally known and highly contested Southern Tenant Farmers Union that drew strong local attention because of its socialist party support and its use of interracial locals. The town served as the union headquarters for a very short time before they were moved to nearby Memphis. The union created an intense emotional response among the townspeople, and though instances of brutality were hinted at over the years, no one would ever confess to the crimes. In 2001, Arkansas State University launched …

Biography Of Dr. Eugene W. Smith, Arkansas State University President 1984 To 1992, Glenda Newsom

Student Theses and Dissertations

A president of a university in the state of Arkansas would benefit from researching the roots of the educational system within the state. Even though the state now has a number of universities that have evolved and are on the cutting-edge of advanced technology, Arkansas was slow in growth and development. Since Arkansas was slow to expand public education and universities have had to compete for scarce resources from the state, a university president with knowledge of the state's political system and the financial operation of the university he/she represents would be successful in expanding the institution. Dr. Eugene W. …

An Empirical Study Of Supreme Court Justice Pre-Appointment Experience, Benjamin H. Barton Sep 2012

An Empirical Study Of Supreme Court Justice Pre-Appointment Experience, Benjamin H. Barton

Florida Law Review

This Article compares the years of experience that preceded each Justice‘s appointment to the United States Supreme Court. This Article seeks to demonstrate that the background experiences of the Roberts Court Justices are quite different from those of earlier Supreme Court Justices and to persuade the reader that this is harmful. To determine how the current Justices compare to their historical peers, the study gathered a database that considers the yearly pre-Court experience for every Supreme Court Justice from John Jay to Elena Kagan. The results are telling: the Roberts Court Justices have spent more pre-appointment time in legal academia, …

In-Text And Out-Of-Text Engagement: Interactional Features In Students' Academic Writing And Academic Engagement, Florette Press Sep 2012

In-Text And Out-Of-Text Engagement: Interactional Features In Students' Academic Writing And Academic Engagement, Florette Press

Theses and Dissertations

While student engagement theory recognizes writing as an engaging activity, there have been few studies that explore the levels of engagement within college students' academic writing. Analyses of in-text interactions between writers and their imagined reader(s) can uncover writers' attitudes about themselves as writers and as participants in the academic community. This study looked specifically at students' in-text interaction in the context of overall student engagement. Making a connection between interactional features in writing and overall student engagement provided a new perspective by which professors and administrators can evaluate students' academic integration. This study combined text analysis and interviews with …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Queensland Health is responsible for the delivery of publicly funded health services within Queensland. Queensland is the second largest state in Australia covering 700,000 square miles (2/12; times the size of Texas, USA)1. Some health professionals, particularly in rural / remote areas, providing maternal and neonatal health care do not have access to specialist nurse education resources. The Queensland Maternity and Neonatal Clinical Guidelines Program trialled an education package to increase clinician knowledge of clinical guideline content. The package was available as a self directed learning tool or sessions facilitated by a local champion. As a result of positive feedback …

Choosing A Survey Sample When Data On The Population Are Limited: A Method Using Global Positioning Systems And Aerial And Satellite Photographs, Harry S. Shannon, Royce Hutson, Athena Kolbe, Bernadette Stringer, Ted Haines

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Various methods have been proposed for sampling when data on the population are limited. However, these methods are often biased. We propose a new method to draw a population sample using Global Positioning Systems and aerial or satellite photographs.

Results: We randomly sampled Global Positioning System locations in designated areas. A circle was drawn around each location with radius representing 20 m. Buildings in the circle were identified from satellite photographs; one was randomly chosen. Interviewers selected one household from the building, and interviews were conducted with eligible household members.

Conclusions: Participants had known selection probabilities, allowing proper estimation …

Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague Sep 2012

Mitigating For Growth: A Blueprint For A Ground Water Exchange Pilot Program In Montana, Laura Ziemer, Sarah Bates, Meg Casey, Ada Montague

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Over the last decade, Montana's fastest growing basins have experienced a surge of reliance on a certain “permit-exempt well loophole,” which enables small ground water diversions to avoid having to go through the regulatory process that determines whether the proposed use would adversely impact senior water users and ground water supply. This loophole has generated significant conflict with senior right owners in areas where exempt wells have provided water for large-scale residential developments. As a partial solution, this article examines ground water mitigation exchanges designed to address similar issues in Washington and presents the 63rd Montana Legislature with recommendations for …

Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis Sep 2012

Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The saga over exempt wells in the western United States and Canada epitomizes a new type of water conflict – a spaghetti-western water war. The political melodrama stars local governments to serve as sheriff of water-supply planning duties. Exempt wells number in the millions, and herding the growing numbers is testing the mettle of the states and provinces responsible for the management, allocation, and protection of natural resources. The separation of laws governing ground water and surface water, coupled with changes in geography and geology within a jurisdiction, compound the administrative riddle and give rise to a broad spectrum of …
