Factors Influencing Stem Density Of Creekbank Spartina Alterniflora In A New England Salt Marsh, Clara Chaisson Jan 2012

Factors Influencing Stem Density Of Creekbank Spartina Alterniflora In A New England Salt Marsh, Clara Chaisson

Botany Honors Papers

Stem density patterns for smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, are highly variable both among years and within the growing season. These variations can have consequences for the overall primary productivity of the salt marsh system, as well as its ability to provide essential ecosystem functions. In this study, I explored factors that could be driving observed variations in four tidal creeks of the Plum Island Sound Estuary, Massachusetts. End of season stem densities were measured at two of the creeks over eight years. Seasonal stem densities were measured at all four of the creeks four times during a single growing season. …

Environmental Education Reform: Using Experiential Learning To Influence Environmental Policy-Making By Fostering A Sense Of Environmental Citizenship And Eco-Literacy, Nicol Belletiere Jan 2012

Environmental Education Reform: Using Experiential Learning To Influence Environmental Policy-Making By Fostering A Sense Of Environmental Citizenship And Eco-Literacy, Nicol Belletiere

Student Theses 2001-2013

This paper argues on behalf of environmental education reform in order to improve America’s ailing environmental politics. It does so by emphasizing the overlap between environmental education, the history of education and American conservation, and environmental politics. It first discusses the core differences in varying styles of education in order to provide a context for the terminology and theories used to discuss education reform. More specifically, I compare and contrast the differences in the thought processes each style of education encourages. Divergent thinking, which results from what is known as informal education, is necessary in order to be an ecologically …

How The United States Will Find A Sustainable Future Through Increased Nuclear Productivity, Ian Pruitt Jan 2012

How The United States Will Find A Sustainable Future Through Increased Nuclear Productivity, Ian Pruitt

Student Theses 2001-2013

In producing my senior thesis I wanted to solve the problem of green house gas emissions. My research focused on finding and examining a sustainable energy source that made sense in present day terms, an energy source that would not be extremely disruptive but would hopefully be part of the solution for the United States in reducing its carbon footprint.

I’m sure many of you know about the different forms of sustainable energy that exist today. Wind power, hydro electric power, tidal power, geothermal power, solar power, and biomass/waste power. For some reason nuclear power is often overlooked when discussing …

The Journal’S The Thing: Teaching Natural History And Nature Writing In Baja California Sur, John S. Farnsworth, Christopher Beatty Jan 2012

The Journal’S The Thing: Teaching Natural History And Nature Writing In Baja California Sur, John S. Farnsworth, Christopher Beatty

Environmental Studies and Sciences

The skills of making informed observations, synthesizing those observations, and communicating them effectively are central to the naturalist. Developing university courses that optimize instruction in these skills simultaneously can, however, be a challenge. Here we describe a program at Santa Clara University comprised of two integrated co-requisite courses, Writing Natural History (ENVS 142) and The Natural History of Baja (BIOL/ENVS 144). Lectures through the 10-week winter quarter expand students’ knowledge of the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Baja Peninsula and help them to develop descriptive writing skills. The courses culminate in a ten-day expedition to the Baja Peninsula and Isla …

The Fine-Scale Habitat Use Of Risso’S Dolphins Off Bardsey Island, Cardigan Bay (Uk), Marijke N. De Boer, Sonja Eisfeld, Mark P. Simmonds

Ecology Collection

The main objectives of this study were (1) to estimate the population size of Risso’s dolphins off Bardsey Island using mark-recapture techniques (De Boer et al., 2013); and (2) to study habitat-use in relation to fine-scale oceanographic features. This work provides preliminary information on the habitat-use of Risso’s dolphins and will benefit future studies, along with the development of effective conservation measures for this species throughout the region.

Cetaceans And Marine Debris: The Great Unknown, Mark Peter Simmonds Jan 2012

Cetaceans And Marine Debris: The Great Unknown, Mark Peter Simmonds

Ecology Collection

Plastics and other marine debris have been found in the gastrointestinal tracts of cetaceans, including instances where large quantities of material have been found that are likely to cause impairment to digestive processes and other examples, where other morbidity and even death have resulted. In some instances, debris may have been ingested as a result of the stranding process and, in others, it may have been ingested when feeding. Those species that are suction or “ram” feeders may be most at risk. There is also evidence of entanglement of cetaceans in marine debris. However, it is usually difficult to distinguish …

Mycorrhizal Colonization Of Hypericum Perforatum L. (Hypericaceae) From Serpentine And Granite Outcrops On The Deer Isles, Maine, Naveed Davoodian, Jason Bosworth, Nishanta Rajakaruna Jan 2012

Mycorrhizal Colonization Of Hypericum Perforatum L. (Hypericaceae) From Serpentine And Granite Outcrops On The Deer Isles, Maine, Naveed Davoodian, Jason Bosworth, Nishanta Rajakaruna

Biological Sciences

Given the paucity of literature on plant-fungal interactions on serpentine soils and limited investigation of serpentine geoecology in eastern North America, we examined mycorrhizal colonization of Hypericum perforatum from adjacent serpentine and granite outcrops on the Deer Isles, ME to determine whether plants were differentially colonized based on substrate. We coincided our sampling with three phenologic stages of H. perforatum (preflowering, flowering, postflowering) to determine possible differences in colonization based on plant phenology. The levels of mycorrhizal colonization in H. perforatum were not significantly different between serpentine and granite sites, while levels of colonization in postflowering plants were significantly higher …

Small-Scale Fishing Communities With Marine Protected Area In Cebu Province, Philippines: Mpa Management & Enforcement And Community Welfare, Dexter S. Ontoy, Jay P. Picardal, Richard B. Parilla, Christine Marie I. Gohetia, Nimfa R. Pansit

CNU Journal of Higher Education

This study attempts to validate the ‗spill-over effect‘ which has been used as theoretical foundation of MPA establishment that would guarantee improved fish catch and henceforth the welfare of the households. Given their socio-economic characteristics, small-scale fishing communities are still the most vulnerable sector in the country. The use of multiple indicators was preferred to capture the different dimensions of the issue of living standard and poverty, in response to the criticisms on these different indicators. The main data gathering method employed in this study was the households, through field survey. The communities‘ level of acceptance possibly influenced an MPAs …

Reading The Standing Tea Leaves In American Electric Power V. Connecticut, Bradford Mank Jan 2012

Reading The Standing Tea Leaves In American Electric Power V. Connecticut, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In American Electric Power v. Connecticut (AEP), the U.S. Supreme Court by an equally divided vote of four to four affirmed the Second Circuit’s decision finding standing and jurisdiction in the case. Even though it did not announce the identities of the justices who voted for standing and against standing, the AEP decision took the unusual step of providing some explanation for how the Court divided on the standing question, and, as a result, provided important information about the positions of the justices on the issue. While it is not binding as a decision for the lower courts except …

Post-Speleogenetic Biogenic Modification Of Gomantong Caves, Sabah, Borneo, Joyce Lundberg, Donald A. Mcfarlane Jan 2012

Post-Speleogenetic Biogenic Modification Of Gomantong Caves, Sabah, Borneo, Joyce Lundberg, Donald A. Mcfarlane

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The Gomantong cave system of eastern Sabah, Malaysia, is well-known as an important site for harvesting edible bird-nests and, more recently, as a tourist attraction. Although the biology of the Gomantong system has been repeatedly studied, very little attention has been given to the geomorphology. Here, we report on the impact of geobiological modification in the development of the modern aspect of the cave, an important but little recognized feature of tropical caves. Basic modeling of the metabolic outputs from bats and birds (CO2, H2O, heat) reveals that post-speleogenetic biogenic corrosion can erode bedrock by between …

Mechanisms Of Success: Plant-Herbivore Interactions And The Invasion Of Non-Native Lonicera Species In North America, Deah Lieurance Jan 2012

Mechanisms Of Success: Plant-Herbivore Interactions And The Invasion Of Non-Native Lonicera Species In North America, Deah Lieurance

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Invasion by non-native species is a complicated process and many hypotheses have been proposed to explain how invasive plant species are often poor competitors in their native range, but dominant in their novel range including the enemy release and novel weapons hypotheses. Additionally, many invasive species are characterized as being tolerant and/or resistant to both damage and limitations in abiotic resources. These hypotheses are based on plant-plant, plant-microbial, and plant-herbivore interactions in the invaders novel range and are not mutually exclusive. The genus Lonicera (Caprifoliaceae) includes approximately 200 species worldwide, with 18 native and 16 introduced species in North America. …

The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability And Change In Diversified Farming Systems, Christopher M. Bacon, Christy Getz, Sibella Kraus, Maywa Montenegro, Kaelin Holland Jan 2012

The Social Dimensions Of Sustainability And Change In Diversified Farming Systems, Christopher M. Bacon, Christy Getz, Sibella Kraus, Maywa Montenegro, Kaelin Holland

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Agricultural systems are embedded in wider social-ecological processes that must be considered in any complete discussion of sustainable agriculture. Just as climatic profiles will influence the future viability of crops, institutions, i.e., governance agreements, rural household and community norms, local associations, markets, and agricultural ministries, to name but a few, create the conditions that foster sustainable food systems. Because discussions of agricultural sustainability often overlook the full range of social dimensions, we propose a dual focus on a broad set of criteria, i.e., human health, labor, democratic participation, resiliency, biological and cultural diversity, equity, and ethics, to assess social outcomes, …

This project is part of an ongoing study of Transition Zone subbasin and will be used in future work …

Spatial Heterogeneity Across Five Rangelands Managed With Pyric-Herbivory, Devan Allen Mcgranahan, David M. Engle, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Stephen L. Winter, James R. Miller, Diane M. Debinski Jan 2012

Spatial Heterogeneity Across Five Rangelands Managed With Pyric-Herbivory, Devan Allen Mcgranahan, David M. Engle, Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Stephen L. Winter, James R. Miller, Diane M. Debinski

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

1. Many rangelands evolved under an interactive disturbance regime in which grazers respond to the spatial pattern of fire and create a patchy, heterogeneous landscape. Spatially heterogeneous fire and grazing create heterogeneity in vegetation structure at the landscape level (patch contrast) and increase rangeland biodiversity. We analyzed five experiments comparing spatially heterogeneous fire treatments to spatially homogeneous fire treatments on grazed rangeland along a precipitation gradient in the North American Great Plains.

2. We predicted that, across the precipitation gradient, management for heterogeneity increases both patch contrast and variance in the composition of plant functional groups. Furthermore, we predicted that …
