Positive Pollutions And Cultural Toxins, John Blair Gamber Jan 2012

Positive Pollutions And Cultural Toxins, John Blair Gamber

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In this innovative study, Positive Pollutions and Cultural Toxins, John Blair Gamber examines urbanity and the results of urban living—traffic, garbage, sewage, waste, and pollution—arguing for a new recognition of all forms of human detritus as part of the natural world and thus for a broadening of our understanding of environmental literature. While much of the discourse surrounding the United States’ idealistic and nostalgic views of itself privileges “clean” living (primarily in rural, small-town, and suburban settings), representations of rurality and urbanity by Chicanas/Chicanos, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans, on the other hand, complicate such generalization. Gamber …

The introduction of Adelges tsugae (Hemlock Woolly Adelgid [HWA]) to the eastern United States has had a devastating impact on Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock). Although much research has been done to assess HWA impacts on ecosystem processes and vegetation structure, few researchers have examined community-level changes in highly infested forest stands. Here we assess the impact of Eastern Hemlock mortality on vegetation and invertebrate diversity and community structure by comparing low-impact (healthy) stands and stands heavily impacted by HWA. We sampled the vegetative and invertebrate diversity of 8 sites (4 low impact and 4 high impact) in the summer and …

Engaging The Humanities To Address Wildland Fire Issues, Fred Swanson, Nathaniel Brodie, Charles Goodrich Jan 2012

Engaging The Humanities To Address Wildland Fire Issues, Fred Swanson, Nathaniel Brodie, Charles Goodrich

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

This project examined existing programs and potential options for collaborations among the humanities, art, science, land management, and public concerning wildfire and wildfire policy and education. These programs and partnerships include creative residencies; conferences, workshops, and symposia; art-science collaborative field studies; and community programs and partnerships. We also reviewed how popular literature frames, reflects and has affected our cultural understanding of wildfire. Our analysis concludes that, compared to the richness of the subject of wildfire, compared to the way wildfire encapsulates all the complexities and controversies of culture, history, and ecology, wildfire’s potential as a literary subject remains largely unfulfilled. …

The Asean Way And Haze Mitigation Efforts, H. Varkkey Jan 2012

The Asean Way And Haze Mitigation Efforts, H. Varkkey

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Transboundary haze pollution is an almost annual occurrence in Southeast Asia. Haze originates from peat and forest fires mostly in Indonesia, with Malaysia and Singapore suffering the worst of its effects. Most of these fires are manmade, and linked to land clearing activities of local and foreign commercial oil palm plantations. The regional nature of haze has concentrated mitigation activities at the ASEAN level. However these initiatives continually fail to effectively mitigate haze. This article argues that haze mitigation has been problematic due to the ASEAN style of regional engagement, which prioritizes the maintenance of national sovereignty. States are compelled …

Informational Standing After Summers, Bradford Mank Jan 2012

Informational Standing After Summers, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In its recent The Wilderness Society v. Rey decision, the Ninth Circuit addressed the difficult question of when a statute may establish a right to informational standing. The D.C. Circuit and the Sixth Circuit had previously reached different conclusions about whether environmental statutes promoting public participation or requiring environmental assessments in certain circumstances create a right to informational standing. The Ninth Circuit in its The Wilderness Society decision interpreted the Supreme Court’s 2009 decision in Summers v. Earth Island Institute, which explicitly narrowed procedural rights standing, as implicitly narrowing standing rights in general and concluded that general notice and …

Another Way' An Ethnographic Portrait Of Community Dynamics, Sustainability, And Percieved Quality Of Life At Inanitah And Earthaven Ecovillage, Jeanne La Roche Jan 2012

Another Way' An Ethnographic Portrait Of Community Dynamics, Sustainability, And Percieved Quality Of Life At Inanitah And Earthaven Ecovillage, Jeanne La Roche

Theses & ETDs

Economic concepts, such as standard of living and the capacity to consume have often been used as a basis for measuring quality of life or human well-being. This thesis examines how standard of living, quality of life, and sustainability intersect through the exploration of "ecovillages." As sustainability-oriented intentional communities, ecovillages attempt to reduce their consumption and cultivate alternative value-systems and lifestyles to enhance their quality of life and ameliorate their ecological footprints. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted at two ecovillages: InanItah, located on Isla Ometepe, Nicaragua, and Earthaven Ecovillage located in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Through participant-observation and informal interviews, I …

Field Trips And Informal Education An Analysis Of Hands-On Science Curriculum, Christine Mccormick Jan 2012

Field Trips And Informal Education An Analysis Of Hands-On Science Curriculum, Christine Mccormick

Theses & ETDs

Students attending public schools in the United States have consistently declined on national and international achievement tests over the past decade (Honda, 2010) . Only by understanding the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, and looking at the shortcomings of science education in the state of Florida, can improvements be made in the future. After reviewing the concept of informal education and how it compares to formal education in terms of concept, content, and effectiveness, a number of Field Trip Units appropriate for students in Kindergarten through eighth grade are presented. These trips address the concerns for …

What Is The Extinction Of The Condor To A Child Who Has Never Seen A Wren? The Effect Of Charismatic Minifauna On The Environmental Behaviors Of High School Students, Aidan Bailey Jan 2012

What Is The Extinction Of The Condor To A Child Who Has Never Seen A Wren? The Effect Of Charismatic Minifauna On The Environmental Behaviors Of High School Students, Aidan Bailey

Theses & ETDs

Large exotic mammals, or "charismatic megafauna," have been the subject of popular campaigns conveying environmental messages with the goal of inspiring pro-environmental attitudes, behaviors and support, both political and financial. Examples include the Polar Bear and the World Wildlife Fund's Giant Panda. However, the species selected are usually mammalian and are less likely to serve as indicator species, under-representing the delicate minifauna that is commonly found around us. This study investigates the potential for "charismatic minifauna," attractive, small, common local animals, to generate change in environmental behaviors in high school students. The author compared a minifauna-themed program, which focused on …

Business As Usual Greenpeace In A Changing World, Mara Feinberg Jan 2012

Business As Usual Greenpeace In A Changing World, Mara Feinberg

Theses & ETDs

The history of Greenpeace creates an iconic image of the organization in the environmental movement. However, that image dates back to the late 1970s and it remains to be seen whether over the last forty years Greenpeace is still impacting change on the environment. It is difficult to define how environmental non-governmental organizations such as Greenpeace are effective in politics. The main goal of this thesis is to understand how Greenpeace has evolved in global environmental politics, addressing how Greenpeace operates in different environmental issue areas over time. This thesis examines the following: literature on NGO existence in environmental politics; …

Who Benefits? Policies Of Inclusion And Exclusion In International Pharmaceutical Bioprospecting Contracts, Katherine Scussel Jan 2012

Who Benefits? Policies Of Inclusion And Exclusion In International Pharmaceutical Bioprospecting Contracts, Katherine Scussel

Theses & ETDs

Bioprospecting is the transfer of plants, animals, and microbes and traditional knowledge about these organisms from biodiversity-rich nations to developed nations in exchange for compensation in the form of contracts promising benefits sharing, intellectual property rights, or development projects. This process, meant to transform what has historically been a one-way extraction of resources into a multidirectional flow of benefits, has been posited as a way to give local or indigenous peoples living in biologically-diverse regions compensation for the conservation of their resources. However, this market-mediated strategy, promising methods of participation and inclusion, inevitably sets up relationships of exclusion and exploitation …

Eco3 Can A Tri-Force Of Sustainability Reforms $Ave The Four Winds Cafe, Johannah Birney

Theses & ETDs

Anthropogenic climate change is threatening the survival of the global ecological community and reforms must be implemented to reduce the global carbon footprint to sustain all forms of life. This is an enormous task; however, it must be done. Restaurants, as the largest commercial energy consumer, are a hotspot for sustainability reforms on a local, national, and global level. The Green Restaurant Association (GRA) is at the forefront of the restaurant reform movement, providing quantitative analysis criteria to certify sustainable restaurants. Not only does their method reduce carbon emissions, but it also saves money, while taking advantage of a strong …

Crimes Of Emission How Dirty Are The Hfc-23 Abatement Projects Of The Clean Development Mechanism?, Oliver Laurence Peckham Jan 2012

Crimes Of Emission How Dirty Are The Hfc-23 Abatement Projects Of The Clean Development Mechanism?, Oliver Laurence Peckham

Theses & ETDs

The Clean Development Mechanism (a carbon offset program under the Kyoto Protocol) has been accused of issuing carbon credits that do not represent real reductions to HFC-23 abatement projects at HCFC-22 production facilities. As a highly potent greenhouse gas, HFC-23 abatement creates a large amount of credits under a proportional issuance system. This potentially creates a perverse incentive to increase HCFC-22 production or the HFC-23/HCFC-22 ratio for the sole purpose of generation carbon credits. This study uses a variety of market data, reported production data, and preexisting reports to draw detailed conclusions regarding the behavior of each of the nineteen …

Anthropogenic Nutrient Enrichment In Bays And Watersheds A Comparison Of Sarasota Bay, Florida And Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Allison Wyatt Jan 2012

Anthropogenic Nutrient Enrichment In Bays And Watersheds A Comparison Of Sarasota Bay, Florida And Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Allison Wyatt

Theses & ETDs

Bays and watersheds are threatened globally by anthropogenic nutrient enrichment, a process that degrades water quality through an influx of nutrients including nitrogen, ammonia, and phosphorous. Two areas of the United States that have experienced periods of degraded water quality that have lead to declines in their bay ecosystems are Kaneohe, Hawaii, and Sarasota, Florida. As their recent histories and land uses are similar, I chose to compare the nutrient content in the watersheds of these two locations as well as show how nutrient levels differed based on their location within the watershed. My results suggest that nutrient levels are …

Who Speaks For The Wolves? An Exploration Of The Human-Wolf Conflict In The Continental United States, Kaitlyn Bock Jan 2012

Who Speaks For The Wolves? An Exploration Of The Human-Wolf Conflict In The Continental United States, Kaitlyn Bock

Theses & ETDs

Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) conservation in North America is at a crossroads. Pushed to near extinction in the early 1900's, the species was recently reintroduced into the Yellowstone ecosystem after a 70 year absence. However, ranching interests and years of accumulated cultural hatred keep wolf recovery from progressing. This thesis explores the ecological and cultural impetus for gray wolf preservation. The history, conservation, and cultural legacy of Canis lupus are analyzed to investigate the ways human preferences influence wildlife management and to further understand the balance between meeting human needs and conserving biodiversity.

Viet Nam, Nebraska, Sharon Kennedy

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The Sheldon Museum of Art is pleased to present Viet Nam, Nebraska, an exhibition of photography by Sinh Danh. The artist's chlorophyll prints of Vietnam War imagery and footage of the plight of Vietnamese boat people are displayed alongside his contemporary daguerreotypes and color photographs, and the multigenerational snapshots he collected from Vietnamese American families in Lincoln.

Together this body of work creates, in Danh's words, "a history of the land" and a "self-portrait" of our city's Vietnamese community. Danh came to Lincoln in April 2011 as a Sheldon artist in residence. He met with senior citizens at …

Transnational Conservation Contracts, Natasha Affolder Jan 2012

Transnational Conservation Contracts, Natasha Affolder

All Faculty Publications

Transnational environmental law is the subject of growing scholarly interest. Yet, much work remains to be done to fill in both the conceptual and empirical contours of this field. One methodological challenge that transnational law poses is the need to look beyond traditional sources of international and national law. This article contributes to efforts to understand transnational law's multilayered architecture by drawing attention to the use of transnational contracts as a mechanism to protect habitats and species. The diverse and proliferating examples of conservation contracts discussed in this article – which include forest carbon agreements, conservation concessions, debt-for-nature swaps, conservation …
