Distribution Of Biological Control Agents (Galerucella Spp., Hylobius Transversovittatus, Nanophyes Marmoratus) And Their Impact On Lythrum Salicaria (Purple Loosestrife) In Indiana, Joshua S. Britton
Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses
Lythrum salicaria is an invasive wetland hydrophyte native to Eurasia. Since 1814, it has been spreading throughout North America and has been in Indiana since 1900. A wide variety of negative ecosystem impacts have been documented but some authors have questioned these findings. Galerucella spp. have been utilized as biological control agents for Lythrum salicaria in Indiana since 1994, but this is the first publication to examine insect control in the state. Studies from other states have generally been shorter time frames than the eight to ten years of this study. This study examined the impacts of Galerucella spp. at …

The Gullah People, Justice, And The Land On Hilton Head Island: A Historical Perspective, Dominique T. Hazzard
Honors Thesis Collection
The Sea Islands off the coast South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, also known as the Lowcountry, have been home to the Gullah-Geechee community for the past three centuries. The Gullah-Geechee people are African Americans who are descended from the enslaved people who worked the rice and cotton plantations in the Low Country region of Georgia and South Carolina, and who continue to live on the mainland and regions ’Sea Islands to this day. These people have a rich culture; more than any other African Americans, the Gullah-Geechee have been able to retain many aspects of West African culture, from language, …

The Writing Center: Reports
During the 2011-2012 academic year, The Writing Center, an Office for Student Success department, implemented programming specifically to address the University of Montana’s identified Strategic Issues and objectives. In doing so, The Writing Center (TWC) marshaled its resources to support students, faculty, and staff in their efforts to become more independent, versatile, and effective writers across the curriculum. This programming responded not only to the University’s Strategic Plan but also to growing student and faculty demand for Writing Center services. Writing Center staff engaged students in intellectual conversations, challenging students to develop as writers and thinkers who contribute to local …

Integrating Community Knowledge Into Environmental And Natural Resource Decision-Making: Notes From Alaska And Around The World, Elizabeth Barrett Ristroph
Integrating Community Knowledge Into Environmental And Natural Resource Decision-Making: Notes From Alaska And Around The World, Elizabeth Barrett Ristroph
Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment
Community knowledge (including traditional, local, and indigenous knowledge) has a role to play in government agency decisions regarding the environment and natural resources. This article considers the benefits of using community knowledge, as well as obstacles to collecting this knowledge and integrating it with Western science. The article further discusses how federal agencies in Alaska use community knowledge and laws that potentially affect this use (including the Data Quality Act). Finally, the article provides recommendations for agencies to consider in collecting and using community knowledge.

The Cross-Bronx Double Cross: How The Cross-Bronx Expressway Has Affected Pediatric Asthma In The Bronx, Catherine Mcnamara
American Studies Senior Theses
This paper will address the effect that the construction of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, in conjunction with specific government policies and practices, has had and continues to have on the inordinately high rates of pediatric asthma in the Bronx. Existing research on the subject tends to take a very segmented view. There has been much research done in the individual fields of the history of the Cross-Bronx Expressway and the Bronx’s subsequent demographic change; more recently, studies have taken note of the Bronx’s high asthma rates, the effect of various pollutants on children’s lung function, pollution rates in the Bronx, and …

Male Savannah Sparrows Provide Less Parental Care With Increasing Paternity Loss, Noah G. Perlut, Lindsay M. Kelly, Nathan J. Zalik, Allan M. Strong
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Male parental care can significantly affect fledging success and, therefore, is a strong target of both natural and sexual selection. However, for songbird species that exhibit extra-pair paternity, males may reduce parental care based on how much paternity they have lost in a brood. We studied Passerculus sandwichensis (Savannah Sparrow) male parental care relative to the proportion of extra-pair young in the nest, to see if males adjusted care in response to increasing loss of paternity. Males brought less food (mass) with increasing rates of extra-pair paternity, although male provisioning did not influence fledging success. These results contrast with a …

Producing Edible Landscapes In Seattle's Urban Forest, Rebecca J. Mclain, Melissa R. Poe, Patrick T. Hurley, Joyce Lecompte, Marla R. Emery
Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications
Over the next decades, green infrastructure initiatives such as tree planting campaigns, and ecological restoration will dramatically change the species composition, species distribution and structure of urban forests across the United States. These impending changes are accompanied by a demand for urban public spaces where people can engage in practices such as gleaning, gardening, and livestock production. This article analyzes the institutional framework that undergirds efforts in Seattle, Washington to normalize the production and use of edible landscapes. We focus attention on the role of grassroots fruit gleaning groups and highlight their bridging function between Seattle's agriculture and forestry policy …

The past decade has seen resurgence in interest in gathering wild plants and fungi in cities. In addition to gathering by individuals, dozens of groups have emerged in U.S., Canadian, and European cities to facilitate access to nontimber forest products (NTFPs), particularly fruits and nuts, in public and private spaces. Recent efforts within cities to encourage public orchards and food forests, and to incorporate more fruit and nut trees into street tree planting programs indicate a growing recognition among planners that gathering is an important urban activity. Yet the academic literature has little to say about urban gathering practices or …
Judge Posner’S 'Practical' Theory Of Standing: Closer To Justice Breyer’S Approach To Standing Than Justice Scalia’S, Bradford Mank
Judge Posner’S 'Practical' Theory Of Standing: Closer To Justice Breyer’S Approach To Standing Than Justice Scalia’S, Bradford Mank
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
In American Bottom Conservancy v. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Judge Richard Posner of the Seventh Circuit questioned three different grounds articulated by the U.S. Supreme Court for the constitutional doctrine of standing in federal courts and instead argued that the “solidest grounds” for the doctrine of standing are “practical.” In part because of his self-described “pragmatic” approach to legal reasoning, Judge Posner’s maverick views may have led Republican presidents to pass him over for being nominated to the Supreme Court in favor of less brilliant but more predictable conservative judges. Judge Posner’s pragmatic or practical approach to standing …
Standing For Private Parties In Global Warming Cases: Traceable Standing Causation Does Not Require Proximate Causation, Bradford Mank
Standing For Private Parties In Global Warming Cases: Traceable Standing Causation Does Not Require Proximate Causation, Bradford Mank
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
This Article argues courts should apply a relatively liberal approach in deciding standing issues for private plaintiffs pursuing climate change suits even if courts ultimately conclude that it is inappropriate to grant relief on the merits to those same plaintiffs because the Supreme Court has clearly declared that standing is a preliminary question that should be treated separately from decisions on the merits and standing causation requires less proof than proximate causation on the merits. The Supreme Court in its 2007 decision in Massachusetts v. EPA held that a state had standing under Article III of the U.S. Constitution to …

Impacts Of Waste Disposal Practices And Water Utilization Of Riverside Dwellers On Physicochemical And Microbiological Properties Of Butuanon River, Central Visayas, Jay P. Picardal, Anelyn Bendoy, Joyce R. Calumba, Mario S. Marababol
CNU Journal of Higher Education
The worsening condition of Butuanon river and its vulnerability to water pollution and further degradation is largely influenced by anthropogenic activities. This study investigated the waste disposal practices and water utilization of Butuanon riverside communities and how these factors influence the physicochemical and microbiological components of the river. Ninety households from 10 barangays situated along the Butuanon River were randomly selected and provided information through a household survey. Water samples (n=3 per barangay) were analyzed for physicochemical and microbiological indicators. Results show that majority of households (75%) dump plastic waste and some (6.7%) dispose human and animal waste into the …
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle? An Examination Of Factors Influencing Environmental Behavior In Denver, Colorado, Dan J. Kasper
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle? An Examination Of Factors Influencing Environmental Behavior In Denver, Colorado, Dan J. Kasper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Non-recycling and non-composting of municipal solid waste have important natural resource management implications, in that they both reduce energy, water, and raw natural resource use. Responsible waste management also likely has positive climate impacts by virtue of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling and composting are pro-environmental behaviors that have been shown to be influenced by numerous socio-demographic and psychological factors. This study analyzes the correlation of a number of variables with frequency of recycling and composting in select census tracts in Denver, CO, USA, with the goals of informing waste management policy and contributing to the overall pro-environmental behavior literature. …

Mycorrhizal Colonization Of Hypericum Perforatum L. (Hypericaceae) On Adjacent Serpentine And Granite Outcrops On The Deer Isles, Maine, Usa, N Davoodian, J Bosworth, N Rajakaruna
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Given the paucity of literature on plant-fungal interactions on serpentine soils and limited investigation of serpentine geoecology in eastern North America, we examined mycorrhizal colonization of Hypericum perforatum from adjacent serpentine and granite outcrops on the Deer Isles, ME to determine whether plants were differentially colonized based on substrate. We coincided our sampling with three phenologic stages of H. perforatum (preflowering, flowering, postflowering) to determine possible differences in colonization based on plant phenology. The levels of mycorrhizal colonization in H. perforatum were not significantly different between serpentine and granite sites, while levels of colonization in postflowering plants were significantly higher …

Grid-Scale Energy Storage For Integrating Renewable Energy: Updates On Ferc Order 755 And Doe-Funded Demonstration Projects, Steve Dahlke
Environmental Studies Student Work
Energy storage is an important technology for overcoming intermittency issues and increasing renewable energy development. Storage provides valuable services to a grid with high penetrations of variable renewable generation. In this paper a background of electricity markets and the regulatory environment in the United States is provided to give context. Then, implications from FERC Order 755 and frequency regulation compensation issues are explored, with a particular focus on the Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO). Finally, updates of ongoing federal-funded energy storage demonstration projects are presented.
