Hiv/Aids Survey In Southern Angola, Martin Chitsama, Joao Artur Dumba, Charlotte Mabhiza-Berejena, Nzola Dimbu

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Deminers in Angola have a higher than average risk for HIV infection and transmission as a result of their work in border areas and their high mobility. The Demining HIV/AIDS Partnership conducted a Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviors and Perceptions survey to explore deminers’ HIV/AIDS knowledge in Cassinga, southern Angola. Among other conclusions, the results stressed the need for an increase in HIV/AIDS education.

Providing Safe Drinking Water In Post-Civil War Sri Lanka, Hartmut Thoms

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

After decades of Civil War, Sri Lanka is making positive strides toward recovery. Protein P7 Of The Cystovirus Φ6 Is Located At The Three-Fold Axis Of The Unexpanded Procapsid, Garrett Katz, Hui Wei, Alexandra Alimova, Al Katz, David Gene Morgan, Paul Gottlieb Oct 2012

Protein P7 Of The Cystovirus Φ6 Is Located At The Three-Fold Axis Of The Unexpanded Procapsid, Garrett Katz, Hui Wei, Alexandra Alimova, Al Katz, David Gene Morgan, Paul Gottlieb

Publications and Research

The objective of this study was to determine the location of protein P7, the RNA packaging factor, in the procapsid of the φ6 cystovirus. A comparison of cryo-electron microscopy high-resolution single particle reconstructions of the φ6 complete unexpanded procapsid, the protein P2-minus procapsid (P2 is the RNA directed RNA-polymerase), and the P7-minus procapsid, show that prior to RNA packaging the P7 protein is located near the three-fold axis of symmetry. Difference maps highlight the precise position of P7 and demonstrate that in P7-minus particles the P2 proteins are less localized with reduced densities at the three-fold axes. We propose that …

Maritime Piracy: Changes In U.S. Law Needed To Combat This Critical National Security Concern, Daniel Pines Oct 2012

Maritime Piracy: Changes In U.S. Law Needed To Combat This Critical National Security Concern, Daniel Pines

Seattle University Law Review

Piracy threatens, and has taken, the lives of American crews and civilians. It poses an enormous economic threat, both in terms of ransom payments and impact on global commerce. It enhances political instability in significant regions of the world, such as the Horn of Africa and the Straits of Malacca. Most critically, though, maritime piracy offers an easy and tempting conduit for terrorism. Terrorists have already used maritime options to advance their cause in several dramatic attacks, including the hijacking of a cruise ship (and murder of a Jewish passenger), the ramming of a boat into a U.S. destroyer (killing …

The Right To Publicity After Death: Postmortem Personality Rights In The Wake Of Experiencehendrix V. Hendrixlicensing.Com, Aubrie Hicks

Seattle University Law Review

While the states are fairly consistent in protecting the rights of living individuals, the level of protection for deceased celebrities varies among the states. Some states allow the right to extend beyond death, while others refuse to recognize a postmortem right of publicity. Even among states that do recognize a postmortem right of publicity, the right is protected to varying degrees, with some states providing explicit statutory protections and others providing only common law protections. Given the inconsistencies among the states, the continuing right to publicity after death has been the subject of much litigation over the last few years, …

Faculty Publications

Pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity is associated with shorter breastfeeding (BF) duration. Whether pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity is associated with other aspects of infant and young child feeding (IYCF) hasnot been investigated. We used data from 370 children born January 1999–September 2001 in a semi-urbancommunity in Morelos, Mexico, where information on how they were fed was available at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24months of age. We modified the World Health Organization’s dietary diversity indicator to assess the quality ofthe complementary foods. An index that included BF, quality of complementary foods and other behaviours wasconstructed to measure IYCF. We …

The Inklings Remembered: A Conversation With Colin Havard, Justin T. Noetzel, Matthew R. Bardowell

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

In late 2011, the authors met with Colin Havard, son of Inkling Dr. Robert E. “Humphrey” Havard and recorded his reminiscences about his father, his Catholic faith, his friendships with J.R.R. Tolkien and the Lewis brothers in particular, and the Inklings and practicing medicine in Oxford in general. As the lone Inkling from a scientific background, he brought a unique perspective to the group’s discussions.

Charles Williams's Anti-Modernist Descent Into Hell, Lydia R. Browning Oct 2012

Charles Williams's Anti-Modernist Descent Into Hell, Lydia R. Browning

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Focuses on the theme of community versus isolation. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Self Reliance” is used as a key to understanding Lawrence Wentworth’s increasing withdrawal from reality and “the city” of his fellow human beings, in contrast with the workings of coinherence personified in the interactions of other characters.
