Pig (Sus Scrofa) Exploitation At Hallan Çemi, Southeastern Anatolia: Proposing An Alternative Model, Ximena Lemoine Jan 2012

Pig (Sus Scrofa) Exploitation At Hallan Çemi, Southeastern Anatolia: Proposing An Alternative Model, Ximena Lemoine

University Honors Theses

Hallan Çemi presents itself as a unique site to study the transitional period before the onset of agriculture in the Near East. The site fails to fit nicely into demographic or environmental models that have widely been accepted for the region. Hallan Çemi thus represents the potential to study innovative human strategies for subsistence, and to provide insight into the processes that led to the eventual adoption of agriculture only a few millennia later. Richard Redding and Michael Rosenberg presented one such innovative strategy for pig exploitation at this site with their New Guinean model (Redding and Rosenberg 1998; Rosenberg …

Interview Or Interrogation: A Critical Review Of The Efficacy And Ethicality Of Post-Conviction Sex Offender Polygraph Testing, Arthur J. Nelson Jan 2012

Interview Or Interrogation: A Critical Review Of The Efficacy And Ethicality Of Post-Conviction Sex Offender Polygraph Testing, Arthur J. Nelson

University Honors Theses

Recently the polygraph, despite its scientific dubiousness, has gained popularity across the globe within post-conviction sex offender management programs, even at times being mandated via judicial decree or legislation. Consequently, the application of this controversial device in sex offender rehabilitation has caused much heated, and at times muddled, debate amongst psychologists as to whether the polygraph is effective, or even ethical. This review surveys the current pool of literature concerning the efficacy and ethicality of the practice of post-conviction sex offender polygraph testing in order to give a clearer overview of the published literature, and to point at future directions …

Defining Ccl20’S Role In Carcinogenesis, Melanie Schafer Jan 2012

Defining Ccl20’S Role In Carcinogenesis, Melanie Schafer

University Honors Theses

It has become widely accepted that chronic inflammation is correlated with cancer. An important aspect in this relationship is the microenvironment established by inflammation and characterized by the production of small molecules known as cytokines and chemokines. One such chemokine, CCLZO, is a Th17 specific chemokine essential for Th17 activation. Although the contribution of Th1 and Th2 in carcinogenesis have been well established, Th17's role in cancer development has yet to be identified. In this study, we provide first experimental evidence regarding the functional role of CCL20 in turmorigenesis that can shed light onto Th17's function in cancer. We generated …

In Vivo Quantification Of Reactive Oxygen Species Demonstrates High Levels Of Oxidative Stress In Base Excision Repair-Deficient Caenorhabditis Elegans: Implications For Associative Metabolic Phenotypes, Travis Lee Hase Jan 2012

In Vivo Quantification Of Reactive Oxygen Species Demonstrates High Levels Of Oxidative Stress In Base Excision Repair-Deficient Caenorhabditis Elegans: Implications For Associative Metabolic Phenotypes, Travis Lee Hase

University Honors Theses

In this present study, I use C. elegans as a model organism to better characterize the phenotypic response to deficiencies in base excision repair (BER). This will help to elucidate how DNA damage, increased mutagenesis, and exposure to reactive oxygen species (ROS) is related to Metabolic Syndrome. Additionally, this work will establish a starting point for investigation that can further characterize phenotypic responses such as mitochondrial physiology and morphology through measurements of mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial circularity. The overall goal of this research is to better understand the nature of mitochondrial dysfunction with respect to the inactivation of DNA …

Lay Versus Medical Analysis: A Conflict Centered On The Disciplinary And Professional Identity Of Psychoanalysis, Sam Yoder Jan 2012

Lay Versus Medical Analysis: A Conflict Centered On The Disciplinary And Professional Identity Of Psychoanalysis, Sam Yoder

University Honors Theses

The psychoanalytic conflict surrounding lay and medical analysis was a prominent conflict within both the European and American psychoanalytic communities. This thesis is an analysis of that conflict from the time period of 1900-1940. I argue that this conflict is an expression of two conflicting ideas for the disciplinary identity of psychoanalysis. Lay analysts believed that psychoanalysis should be a distinct discipline and be used in a multidisciplinary context. Medical analysts believed that through aligning psychoanalysis with medicine it would obtain professional legitimacy. This thesis also covers concepts of professionalization in disciplines.

Instant Canons: Film Festivals, Film Criticism, And The Internet In The Early Twenty-First Century, Morgen Ruff Jan 2012

Instant Canons: Film Festivals, Film Criticism, And The Internet In The Early Twenty-First Century, Morgen Ruff

University Honors Theses

Film festivals have been major events on the yearly film calendar since the first international festival at Venice in 1938. A handful of events--Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and Rotterdam, among others--have traditionally dominated discussion, although there are several parallel circuits within the festival world that generate different types and degrees of discourse among critics and audiences. Popular film criticism, concurrent with the recent crisis in print journalism, has undergone a broad shift toward the online sphere during the first decade of the twenty-first century, which has engendered new forms of criticism and consensus, such as the review aggregator. This thesis examines …

Whose Budget? Our Budget? Broadening Political Stakeholdership Via Participatory Budgeting, Celina Su Jan 2012

Whose Budget? Our Budget? Broadening Political Stakeholdership Via Participatory Budgeting, Celina Su

Publications and Research

In this thought piece, I attempt to contextualize New York City’s inaugural participatory budgeting (PB) process in the larger landscape of American political participation. I discuss how the bottom-up way in which stakeholders wrote the process’s rules in the first place, alongside the core role played by the two lead organizations, helped to broaden notions of stakeholdership among constituents. Ultimately, the first year’s primary achievement regarding political participation was not a specific set of outcomes, but a debut as an unfinished form of governance—one that began to engage traditionally marginalized constituents, to trigger their political imagination, and to prompt them …

Hyphens For Disambiguating Phrases: Effectiveness For Young And Older Adults, Inge Anema, Loraine Obler Jan 2012

Hyphens For Disambiguating Phrases: Effectiveness For Young And Older Adults, Inge Anema, Loraine Obler

Publications and Research

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether hyphens that disambiguate phrasing in ambiguous sentences influence reading rate and reading comprehension for younger and older adults. Moreover, as working memory (WM) has been implicated in age-related changes in sentence comprehension for both auditory and written materials, we asked if it contributed to comprehension of our sentences with hyphenated and non-hyphenated ambiguous noun phrases (NPs), predicting that the hyphens would reduce WM load. Twenty younger (M = 24 years) and 20 older (M = 73 years) adults read sentences with either ambiguous or non-ambiguous NPs that were either hyphenated or …

Advancing The Human Right To Housing In Post-Katrina New Orleans: Discursive Opportunity Structures In Housing And Community Development, Leigh Graham Jan 2012

Advancing The Human Right To Housing In Post-Katrina New Orleans: Discursive Opportunity Structures In Housing And Community Development, Leigh Graham

Publications and Research

In post-Katrina New Orleans, housing and community development (HCD) advocates clashed over the future of public housing. This case study examines the evolution of and limits to a human right to housing frame introduced by one nongovernmental organization (NGO). Ferree’s concept of the discursive opportunity structure and Bourdieu’s social field ground this NGO’s failure to advance a radical economic human rights frame, given its choice of a political inside strategy that opened up for HCD NGOs after Hurricane Katrina. Strategic and ideological differences within the field limited the efficacy of this rights-based frame, which was seen as politically radical and …

Razing Lafitte: Defending Public Housing From A Hostile State, Leigh Graham Jan 2012

Razing Lafitte: Defending Public Housing From A Hostile State, Leigh Graham

Publications and Research

The contentious politics of the demolition of Lafitte public housing in post- Katrina New Orleans and its replacement with mixed-income properties is a telling case of the strategic conflicts housing advocates face in public housing revitalization. It reveals how the qualified outcomes of HOPE VI interact with local institutional and historical circumstances to confound the equity and social justice goals of housing and community development advocates. It shows the limits to public housing revitalization as an urban recovery strategy when hostile government leadership characterizes a region, and the state is recast as an adversary rather than revitalization partner. This case …

Where’S The Pedagogy? The Role Of Teaching And Learning In The Digital Humanities, Stephen Brier Jan 2012

Where’S The Pedagogy? The Role Of Teaching And Learning In The Digital Humanities, Stephen Brier

Publications and Research

The Digital Humanities (DH) has focused narrowly on digital research methods and projects and digital publication efforts. Yet DH has also had a significant, if under recognized, impact on classroom pedagogy. This chapter evaluates the ways DH practices, embodied in a series of pedagogy projects at the City University of York (CUNY), have been used to reshape teaching and learning in college classrooms.

Subtle And Overt Forms Of Islamophobia: Microaggressions Toward Muslim Americans, Kevin L. Nadal, Katie E. Griffin, Sahran Hamit, Jayleen Leon, Michael Tobio, David P. Rivera Jan 2012

Subtle And Overt Forms Of Islamophobia: Microaggressions Toward Muslim Americans, Kevin L. Nadal, Katie E. Griffin, Sahran Hamit, Jayleen Leon, Michael Tobio, David P. Rivera

Publications and Research

Previous research suggests that microaggressions, or subtle and covert manifestations of bias, are commonplace in the life experience of people of color, women, and sexual minorities. However, there is a dearth of research focusing on microaggressions toward people from religious minority groups. Using a qualitative approach and directed content analysis with Muslim American participants (N=10), six themes emerged: 1) Endorsing Religious Stereotypes of Muslims as Terrorists, 2) Pathology of the Muslim Religion, 3) Assumption of Religious Homogeneity, 4) Exoticization, 5) Islamophobic and Mocking Language, and 6) Alien in Own Land. Implications for Muslim mental health are discussed.

Digital Video: Engaging Students In Critical Media Literacy And Community Activism, Jessie Daniels Jan 2012

Digital Video: Engaging Students In Critical Media Literacy And Community Activism, Jessie Daniels

Publications and Research

This article presents a strategy for teaching health communication that fosters critical media literacy through the strategic combination of digital video, documentary film, video worksheets, and peer-reviewed journal articles. Given the media-saturated environment in which notions of health are shaped, critical media literacy skills are crucial to students in health-related fields. Cases of key concepts illustrated through documentary films and the peer-reviewed literature are presented. The article then explores how one class took the lead in designing a community event that critically engaged both a YouTube video and a documentary film about police brutality as a public health issue.

Electric Lamp: Virtual Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification, Nelson R. Salinas, Damon P. Little Jan 2012

Electric Lamp: Virtual Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification, Nelson R. Salinas, Damon P. Little

Publications and Research

We present eLAMP, a PERL script, with Tk graphical interface, that electronically simulates Loop-mediated AMPlification (LAMP) allowing users to efficiently test putative LAMP primers on a set of target sequences. eLAMP can match primers to templates using either exact (via builtin PERL regular expressions) or approximate matching (via the tre-agrep library). Performance was tested on 40 whole genome sequences of Staphylococcus. eLAMP correctly predicted that the two tested primer sets would amplify from S. aureus genomes and not amplify from other Staphylococcus species. Open source (GNU Public License) PERL scripts are available for download from the New York Botanical Garden’s …

Three Stravinsky Analyses: Petrushka, Scene 1 (To Rehearsal No. 8); The Rake’S Progress, Act Iii, Scene 3 (“In A Foolish Dream”); Requiem Canticles, “Exaudi”, Joseph N. Straus Jan 2012

Three Stravinsky Analyses: Petrushka, Scene 1 (To Rehearsal No. 8); The Rake’S Progress, Act Iii, Scene 3 (“In A Foolish Dream”); Requiem Canticles, “Exaudi”, Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

Most published work in our field privileges theory over analysis, with analysis acting as a subordinate testing ground and exemplification for a theory. Reversing that customary polarity, this article analyzes three works by Stravinsky (Petrushka, The Rake’s Progress, Requiem Canticles) with a relative minimum of theoretical preconceptions and with the simple aim, in David Lewin’s words, of “hearing the piece[s] better.”

Topic Modeling And Figurative Language, Lisa M. Rhody Jan 2012

Topic Modeling And Figurative Language, Lisa M. Rhody

Publications and Research

Located at the center of Jorie Graham’s collection The End of Beauty, “Self Portrait as Hurray and Delay” crafts a portrait of the artist, poised at a precarious moment in which thought begins to take shape. Like Penelope, Graham entertains the illusion, if only momentarily, of a choice between bringing a creative impulse into form or allowing it to come undone. A weaver of language, Graham subtly, deftly, but unsuccessfully attempts to delay the inevitable moment in poetic creation in which complexity of thought adopts form through language, and so realized is also reduced. In The End of Beauty, the …

The Social Life Of Musical Instruments, Eliot Bates Jan 2012

The Social Life Of Musical Instruments, Eliot Bates

Publications and Research

Accordion Crimes, a novel by E. Annie Proulx, traces the life of and routes travelled by a green diatonic button accordion: its birth in Sicily in the workshop of “The Accordion Maker,” its numerous changes of ownership in the Americas during encounters between various immigrant communities, and its death when it finally falls into disrepair in the town of Old Glory, Minnesota. There are other accordions in the book, and many temporary human owners, but it is one particular green accordion that is the book’s protagonist. We meet and experience other characters largely through their interactions with the green accordion, …
