The Contributions Of Two Public Health Pioneers: John Snow And Joseph Goldberger, Timothy J. Bungum Nov 2012

The Contributions Of Two Public Health Pioneers: John Snow And Joseph Goldberger, Timothy J. Bungum

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Similar to many professional disciplines, public health was shaped by pioneers who made important contributions. Two trailblazers, whose work current public health officials should be aware of are Drs. John Snow and Joseph Goldberger. Although Snow is a well known public health figure, mentions of his work in contemporary health promotion and public health text books are generally limited and typically comment only on his study of the Broad Street Pump (BSP) cholera outbreak. The accomplishments of Joseph Goldberger receive even less coverage than those of Snow. Goldberger’s work in identifying the cause of pellagra was instrumental in creating the …

The Application Of John Dewey's Ideas To An Inner City Alternative High School, Meryl Domina, Janice Greer Nov 2012

The Application Of John Dewey's Ideas To An Inner City Alternative High School, Meryl Domina, Janice Greer

Education and Culture

The idea for this paper grew out of a comment Laurel N. Tanner made in her book Dewey's Laboratory School: Lessons for Today. Tanner wrote that it isn't enough to read Dewey as his "ideas are not developed fully enough in these major works to serve as guides to practice" (1997, p. xii). She researched the early records of the Laboratory School and brought the workings of Dewey's school to life, showing the "everyday operation" underlying Dewey's principles. In this paper I am going to show how Sullivan House applies Dewey's principles to a contemporary alternative high school serving …

The Art Of Schooling: Places Of Authentic Learning And Caring, Zach Kelehear Nov 2012

The Art Of Schooling: Places Of Authentic Learning And Caring, Zach Kelehear

Education and Culture

In the spring of the school year, the high school and first-grade students came together for a collaborative, multi-age tile mosaic art project. Three times a week students from two first-grade classes would travel to the high school to work with a high school mentor in creating tile mosaic pieces. Those pieces would be brought together on the wall of the elementary school at the end of the year. Watching those students come together in the shared art experience served to remind me of the real treasure that teaching and learning can be. When school communities risk constructing learning that …

John Dewey's View Of The Curriculum In The Child And The Curriculum, Douglas J. Simpson, Michael J. B. Jackson Nov 2012

John Dewey's View Of The Curriculum In The Child And The Curriculum, Douglas J. Simpson, Michael J. B. Jackson

Education and Culture

Today, whether in the name of accountability, higher standards, or economic competitiveness, we risk putting the formal school curriculum ahead of the child—a problem that Dewey addressed in 1902. Advantaged and influential individuals and groups unconsciously surrender the individuality, aspirations, and humanity of the child to privileged interests and voices, and in so doing, they unwittingly give or take away the professional roles and responsibilities of educators. That is, educators are frequently stripped of the freedom to think for themselves, to make professional judgments, and to teach in ways that they consider are in the best interest of children and …

American Principles Of Self-Government, Michael Reber Nov 2012

American Principles Of Self-Government, Michael Reber

Education and Culture

I revisit Thomas Jefferson's Principles of Government and reformulate them into four basic principles for life in the 21st century. Next, I state the conditions necessary for these principles to be fostered within a democratic, republican context, most specifically, Jefferson's Ward Republic. Finally, in reference to Jefferson's thesis that the most important way to secure our liberties is via an educated and self-reliant citizenry, I present a new image of public education for an American Republic.

The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger Nov 2012

The "Sokal Hoax" And A Movement Towards A Clarity Of Expression In Leftist Writing, Helmut Steger

Education and Culture

This paper is an attempt to not only gain a better understanding of the "leftist" ideology in educational research by examining one its most prolific authors, but also to take a hard look at how leftist education literature has "allowed" power-ful conservative (or "rightist") coalitions to set the educational agenda in the United States for the next unforeseeable years.

Album: Graduation Speech, Adult Degree Program, Vermont College, Montpelier, Vermont, June 27, 1993, Martha Vanderwolk

Education and Culture

The following is a graduation address given at the Adult Degree Program of Vermont College by faculty member, Martha VanderWolk. The Adult Degree Program, now located at Vermont College of Union Institute and University, the oldest external degree program for adults in the United States, celebrating its 40th birthday this year [2003], is based in student-centered independent study. At graduations, a faculty member is asked to give the address and students are handed their diplomas by friends or family members who have supported them during their years as a student.

Dewey, Bruner, And "Seas Of Stories" In The High Stakes Testing Debate, Kristen Campbell Wilcox Nov 2012

Dewey, Bruner, And "Seas Of Stories" In The High Stakes Testing Debate, Kristen Campbell Wilcox

Education and Culture

This paper proposes that many of the questions surrounding high stakes testing being debated today are important, yet fall short of moving teachers, parents, students, administrators and legislators to think deeply about how optimal teaching and learning can be achieved in a high stakes testing environment. Finally, the high stakes testing debate is viewed, to borrow a term from Bruner, as a "sea of stories" in which the stakeholders see the same things, but come away with remarkably differing stories of what is happening (1996, p. 147). The principles of learning espoused by Dewey and Bruner put these "seas of …

Rorty, Putnam, And The Pragmatist View Of Epistemology And Metaphysics, Teed Rockwell Nov 2012

Rorty, Putnam, And The Pragmatist View Of Epistemology And Metaphysics, Teed Rockwell

Education and Culture

In this paper, I will examine some of the modern debates between pragmatism and so-called "realism," especially those between Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam. My claim is that many of these debates are based on misunderstandings of the pragmatist tradition. If we rely on Dewey's original ideas, rather than Rorty's reinterpretations of Dewey, these problems can be radically transformed, and in many cases dissolved.

Physical Chemical Properties Of Trace And Minor Components Of Natural Waters: Solubility, Speciation, And Density, Ryan J. Woosley Nov 2012

Physical Chemical Properties Of Trace And Minor Components Of Natural Waters: Solubility, Speciation, And Density, Ryan J. Woosley

Open Access Dissertations

The physical properties of minor/trace components of natural waters aren’t well known. Although these components have received a great deal of study recently only a small focus has been on properties such as speciation and solubility, which influence the behavior and fate in the environment. The pH has a large influence on speciation. This is of increasing importance due to ocean acidification from the anthropogenic input of CO2 into the environment and the resultant uptake by the oceans. Metals that form strong complexes with hydroxide and carbonate will see large changes speciation over the next few centuries. Metals with biological …

The Broadband Digital Divide And The Economic Benefits Of Mobile Broadband For Rural Areas, James Prieger Nov 2012

The Broadband Digital Divide And The Economic Benefits Of Mobile Broadband For Rural Areas, James Prieger

School of Public Policy Working Papers

Broadband is becoming increasingly important to national economies and the personal lives of users. However, broadband availability and adopation are not diffusing in rural and urban areas at the same rates. This article updates the rural broadband digital divide, with special attention paid to mobility. Empirical estimations of broadband provision and usage in the US show that rural areas have fewer high-speed fixed and mobile providers but more slower-speed fixed providers than urban areas. While rural availability of mobile broadband is lower than in urban areas, it still helps fill in gaps in fixed broadband coverage in rural areas. The …
