Rivers Of Truth, Shores Of Myth And The Land Between: The Dawning Of Silvia Sunshine Upon Florida’S Frontier, An Annotated Diary, Dara R. Vance

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Traveling independently as a published author and a lady of stature, Abbie M. Brooks exceeded the boundaries placed around women in America’s Gilded Age. From 1872 through 1876, Brooks faithfully recorded her adventures as she traveled throughout Florida, Georgia and Cuba. The four years of nearly daily entries she wrote enable the reader to witness the emergence of Brooks nom d’ plume Silvia Sunshine as an opinionated and authoritative guide. The diary entries and travel notations were compiled into the Florida guidebook Petals Plucked from Sunny Climes, published in 1880. During the course of the diary Brooks attributed her own …

Risk Of Radiogenic Second Cancers Following Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Arc Therapy For Prostate Cancer, Laura A. Rechner, Rebecca M. Howell, Rui Zhang, Carol Etzel, Andrew K. Lee, Wayne D. Newhauser Nov 2012

Risk Of Radiogenic Second Cancers Following Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Arc Therapy For Prostate Cancer, Laura A. Rechner, Rebecca M. Howell, Rui Zhang, Carol Etzel, Andrew K. Lee, Wayne D. Newhauser

Faculty Publications

Prostate cancer patients who undergo radiotherapy are at an increased risk to develop a radiogenic second cancer. Proton therapy has been shown to reduce the predicted risk of second cancer when compared to intensity modulated radiotherapy. However, it is unknown if this is also true for the rotational therapies proton arc therapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). The objective of this study was to compare the predicted risk of cancer following proton arc therapy and VMAT for prostate cancer. Proton arc therapy and VMAT plans were created for three patients. Various risk models were combined with the dosimetric data …

A Phylogenomic Approach To Vertebrate Phylogeny Supports A Turtle-Archosaur Affinity And A Possible Paraphyletic Lissamphibia, Jonathan J. Fong, Jeremy M. Brown, Matthew K. Fujita, Bastien Boussau Nov 2012

A Phylogenomic Approach To Vertebrate Phylogeny Supports A Turtle-Archosaur Affinity And A Possible Paraphyletic Lissamphibia, Jonathan J. Fong, Jeremy M. Brown, Matthew K. Fujita, Bastien Boussau

Faculty Publications

In resolving the vertebrate tree of life, two fundamental questions remain: 1) what is the phylogenetic position of turtles within amniotes, and 2) what are the relationships between the three major lissamphibian (extant amphibian) groups? These relationships have historically been difficult to resolve, with five different hypotheses proposed for turtle placement, and four proposed branching patterns within Lissamphibia. We compiled a large cDNA/EST dataset for vertebrates (75 genes for 129 taxa) to address these outstanding questions. Gene-specific phylogenetic analyses revealed a great deal of variation in preferred topology, resulting in topologically ambiguous conclusions from the combined dataset. Due to consistent …

Thermal Fluctuations Of Haemoglobin From Different Species: Adaptation To Temperature Via Conformational Dynamics, A. M. Stadler, C. J. Garvey, A. Bocahut, S. Sacquin-Mora, I. Digel, G. J. Schneider, F. Natali, G. M. Artmann, G. Zaccai Nov 2012

Thermal Fluctuations Of Haemoglobin From Different Species: Adaptation To Temperature Via Conformational Dynamics, A. M. Stadler, C. J. Garvey, A. Bocahut, S. Sacquin-Mora, I. Digel, G. J. Schneider, F. Natali, G. M. Artmann, G. Zaccai

Faculty Publications

Thermodynamic stability, configurational motions and internal forces of haemoglobin (Hb) of three endotherms (platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus; domestic chicken, Gallus gallus domesticus and human, Homo sapiens) and an ectotherm (salt water crocodile, Crocodylus porosus) were investigated using circular dichroism, incoherent elastic neutron scattering and coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulations. The experimental results from Hb solutions revealed a direct correlation between protein resilience, melting temperature and average body temperature of the different species on the 0.1 ns time scale. Molecular forces appeared to be adapted to permit conformational fluctuations with a root mean square displacement close to 1.2 Å at the corresponding average …

Global Feed-Forward Vibration Isolation In A Km Scale Interferometer, Ryan Derosa, Jennifer C. Driggers, Dani Atkinson, Haixing Miao, Valery Frolov, Michael Landry, Joseph A. Giaime, Rana X. Adhikari Nov 2012

Global Feed-Forward Vibration Isolation In A Km Scale Interferometer, Ryan Derosa, Jennifer C. Driggers, Dani Atkinson, Haixing Miao, Valery Frolov, Michael Landry, Joseph A. Giaime, Rana X. Adhikari

Faculty Publications

Using a network of seismometers and sets of optimal filters, we implemented a feed-forward control technique to minimize the seismic contribution to multiple interferometric degrees of freedom of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory interferometers. The filters are constructed by using the Levinson-Durbin recursion relation to approximate the optimal Wiener filter. By reducing the RMS of the interferometer feedback signals below 10Hz, we have improved the stability and duty cycle of the joint network of gravitational wave detectors. By suppressing the large control forces and mirror motions, we have dramatically reduced the rate of non-Gaussian transients in the gravitational wave signal …

Beneficial Ownership And The Remic Classification Rules, Bradley T. Borden, David J. Reiss Nov 2012

Beneficial Ownership And The Remic Classification Rules, Bradley T. Borden, David J. Reiss

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

REMICs are securitized pools of mortgages that qualify for special flow-through taxation. To qualify for flow-through tax treatment, the pool must satisfy several requirements. An intended REMIC that fails to satisfy those requirements will likely be taxed as a corporation and payments made to holders of interests in a failed REMIC will likely be nondeductible dividend payments, subjecting the REMIC to significant tax and penalties. Such tax and penalties will cause beneficial interests in the pool to lose value and frustrate investors who relied upon REMIC classification as an incentive to purchase interests. Thus, tax classification is critical to REMICs …

The Nature Of Risk Preferences: Evidence From Insurance Choices, Levon Barseghyan, Francesca Molinari, Joshua C. Teitelbaum, Ted O'Donoghue Nov 2012

The Nature Of Risk Preferences: Evidence From Insurance Choices, Levon Barseghyan, Francesca Molinari, Joshua C. Teitelbaum, Ted O'Donoghue

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The authors use data on insurance deductible choices to estimate a structural model of risky choice that incorporates "standard" risk aversion (diminishing marginal utility for wealth) and probability distortions. They find that probability distortions--characterized by substantial overweighting of small probabilities and only mild insensitivity to probability changes--play an important role in explaining the aversion to risk manifested in deductible choices. This finding is robust to allowing for observed and unobserved heterogeneity in preferences. They demonstrate that neither Kőszegi-Rabin loss aversion alone nor Gul disappointment aversion alone can explain our estimated probability distortions, signifying a key role for probability weighting.

Screening For Mental Health Problems Among Incarcerated Youth In Nevada: Practice And Policy, Michelle Chino, Jennifer Personius-Zipoy, Denise Tanata

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Incarcerated youth in Nevada with serious mental health problems are not being effectively identified. The current study examined the utility of simple screening instruments as a mechanism for identifying incarcerated youth who may have a mental health disorder. Adjudicated youth, incarcerated at each of Nevada’s 12 juvenile detention facilities, participated in the study by completing a demographic questionnaire and a standardized mental health screening instrument: the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument-Version 2 (MAYSI-2). Findings indicate a high prevalence of mental health disorders among incarcerated juveniles in Nevada. Identifying youth with mental health problems is complicated by the lack of a systematic …
