A Historical Review And Assessment Of Urban Heat Island Research In Singapore, Matthias Roth, Winston T. L. Chow Nov 2012

A Historical Review And Assessment Of Urban Heat Island Research In Singapore, Matthias Roth, Winston T. L. Chow

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This historical review of 20 studies since the 1960s examines the influence of urban development on the thermal environment in Singapore, a fast growing tropical island city-state. Past observations are critically assessed with regard to experimental controls and station metadata. Given the availability of historical climate and developmental data spanning almost 50 years, changes in urban heat island (UHI) intensity and spatial coverage can be traced temporally. Rapid urban expansion in Singapore is clearly reflected in spatially and temporally changing air and surface temperature patterns. The nocturnal canopy-layer UHI intensity – measured as the difference between the commercial urban core …

A Hybrid Bishop-Hill Model For Microstructure Sensitive Design, Ribeka Takahashi Nov 2012

A Hybrid Bishop-Hill Model For Microstructure Sensitive Design, Ribeka Takahashi

Theses and Dissertations

A method is presented for adapting the classical Bishop-Hill model to the requirements of elastic/yield-limited design in metals of arbitrary crystallographic texture. The proposed Hybrid Bishop-Hill (HBH) model, which will be applied to ductile FCC metals, retains the `stress corners' of the polyhedral Bishop-Hill yield surface. However, it replaces the `maximum work criterion' with a criterion that minimizes the Euclidean distance between the applicable local corner stress state and the macroscopic stress state. This compromise leads to a model that is much more accessible to yield-limited design problems. Demonstration of performance for the HBH model is presented for an extensive …

Reviewing The American University Law Review On Extraterritoriality: A Critical Response To Viki Economides, Note, Tianrui Group Co. V. Itc: The Dubious Status Of Extraterritoriality And The Domestic Industry Requirement Requirement Of Section 337(Link), Jonathan Stroud Nov 2012

Reviewing The American University Law Review On Extraterritoriality: A Critical Response To Viki Economides, Note, Tianrui Group Co. V. Itc: The Dubious Status Of Extraterritoriality And The Domestic Industry Requirement Requirement Of Section 337(Link), Jonathan Stroud

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Recently, the Federal Circuit upheld the Commission’s decision to exclude goods based on a trade secret violation that largely happened abroad. The American University Law Review critiqued that decision on two grounds: First, that a presumption against extraterritorial application of U.S. law applied; and second, that licensing alone could not establish a domestic industry. The American University Law Review's critique remains incomplete, however, as the Federal Circuit correctly decided the case for at least two reasons. first, the Federal Circuit correctly applied the “extraterritorial presumption” canon of construction; and second, the recent Federal Circuit decision in InterDigital Communications LLC v. …

Freedom, Immigration, And Adequate Options, Javier S. Hidalgo Nov 2012

Freedom, Immigration, And Adequate Options, Javier S. Hidalgo

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

According to the freedom argument for open borders, immigration restrictions are generally unjust because these restrictions infringe on important freedoms, such as freedom of association and the economic liberties. Some authors have objected to the freedom argument by claiming that potential immigrants only have rights to sufficient options to live decent or autonomous lives and, consequently, states can permissibly prevent people from immigrating when potential immigrants have adequate options. This paper shows that this objection to the freedom argument for open borders is unsound and that restrictions on international freedom of movement can be morally impermissible even when potential immigrants …

An Intercomparison Of Four Models Of Current Meter In High Current Conditions In Drake Passage, Maureen A. Kennelly, D. Randolph Watts, Karen L. Tracey, Kathleen A. Donohue Nov 2012

An Intercomparison Of Four Models Of Current Meter In High Current Conditions In Drake Passage, Maureen A. Kennelly, D. Randolph Watts, Karen L. Tracey, Kathleen A. Donohue

Physical Oceanography Technical Reports

Seven current meters representing four models were placed for an 11 month deployment on a stiffly buoyed mooring to intercompare their velocity measurements: two VMCMs, two Aanderaa RCM11s, two Aanderaa SEAGUARDSs, and a Nortek Aquadopp. The current meters were placed 6 m apart from each other at about 4000 m depth in an area of Drake Passage expected to have strong near-bottom currents, that were nearly independent of depth. Two high-current events occurred in bursts of semi-diurnal pulses lasting several days, one with peak speeds up to 67 cm/s and the other above 35 cm/s. The current speed measurements all …
