Edible Activism: Food And The Counterculture Of The 1960s And 1970s, Sandra Johnson
Edible Activism: Food And The Counterculture Of The 1960s And 1970s, Sandra Johnson
Honors Theses
Food is an essential part of every person’s life. Not only does it provide sustenance, but it also holds cultural value. Throughout American history, food has played a significant role in activism because of its ability to form and express identity, build community, demonstrate allegiance with certain beliefs, and reject the status quo. In 1773, American colonists boycotted the controlling British Monarchy and the monopolistic East India Company by throwing tea into the Boston harbor in what later became known as the Boston Tea Party. During the Jacksonian era of the 1830s, radical vegetarians led by the ideologies of …

Community Development Through Electronic Sociograms, Aubrie L. Piper
Community Development Through Electronic Sociograms, Aubrie L. Piper
Masters Theses
As the expectations of assessing student development for student affairs professionals throughout higher education increases, the efforts of residence halls initiatives have been in the spotlight. To reflect upon the intentional means of developing each student, Eastern Illinois University's Housing & Dining Services department created the Panther Success Initiative. The Panther Success Initiative was designed with the expectation that RA staff interact with residents as frequent as possible to gain an understanding and of the residents' personal and academic needs for a successful collegiate experience. Through these interactions, the RA can then provide resources and advocate for the individual students …
Brazil’S Deferred Highway: Mobility, Development, And Anticipating The State In Amazonia, Jeremy M. Campbell
Brazil’S Deferred Highway: Mobility, Development, And Anticipating The State In Amazonia, Jeremy M. Campbell
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
Four decades ago, Brazilian officials plotted designs for colonization and resource extraction in Amazonia; subsequently the region has become a test-lab for successive development regimes. Along the Santarém-Cuiabá Highway (Br-163) in the state of Pará, residents have engaged in a range of licit and illicit activities as official development policy has shifted throughout the years. Despite assertions that living along the unpaved road is tantamount to “being stuck” in place and time, residents move widely throughout the region, using the road, trails, streams, and rivers as thoroughfares. I argue that “being stuck” functions as a discursive label for illegible mobilities …

Capturing Dance: The Art Of Documentation (An Exploration Of Distilling The Body In Motion), Kasey J. Lack
Theses : Honours
This research paper is an exploration of documenting and capturing live dance performance in regards to three artistic mediums, Notation, Photography and Film. This piece of writing discusses practitioners who have contributed to the development of these processes such as: Ann Hutchinson Guest, Rudolf von Laban, Eadweard Muybridge, Lois Greenfield, Ted Shawn, Norman McLaren and Sue Healey. In conjunction with historical and current day research the secondary document provided alongside this thesis describes the practical investigation undertaken. The reflections included define first-hand discoveries of how these three mediums of documenting interconnect to describe a contemporary dance solo. Thoughts, findings and …
Alberti And Ficino, John Shannon Hendrix
Alberti And Ficino, John Shannon Hendrix
Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications
Leon Battista Alberti and Marsilio Ficino, though separated by twenty-nine years in age, had a close relationship as mentor and pupil. Concepts which can be found in Alberti’s De pictura (1435) and De re aedificatoria (1450) are infused in Ficino’s De amore (1469). The concepts include Alberti’s theories of armonia, lineamenti, concinnitas, ornamento, and the pyramid of light in the theory of vision. In both Alberti and Ficino, harmonies shared by the body and music are manifestations of the harmonies of the soul. Beauty in body and matter is determined by beauty in mind (mens …

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
Over the past century, China has been depicted as being solely to blame for the world’s most serious commercial piracy problem. But this characterization is not entirely China’s fault. Multinational corporations and international brand owners in China have adopted a flawed approach to combating trademark infringement that is actually making the problem worse within Chinese walls. Companies and brand owners have primarily implemented one dimensional, enforcement only approaches that rely specifically on litigation as a means to curb counterfeiting and trademark infringement. Since 2001, China has made substantial strides in the laws governing trademarks and has trended toward positive treatment …
Language As Microaggression: The New Lexicon Of American Racism, Juan Thurmond
Language As Microaggression: The New Lexicon Of American Racism, Juan Thurmond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are countless occasions where marginalized groups bear witness to language-based discriminatory practices. Language, as defined here, is a species of symbolism. After reviewing the sociological literature, the term "microaggressions" appears to best describe the phenomena in its everyday occurrences. Microaggressions are "the brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial, gender, sexual-orientation, and religious slights and insults to the target person or group" (Sue, Capodilupo, et al., 2007; Sue, 2010). Sue classifies microaggressions into three forms: microassaults, microinsults, microinvalidations. The purpose of the project was tri-fold. By …
We're Paid To Take Care Of The Movement. The Movement Ain't Paid To Take Care Of Us: The Promise And Challenges Of Workplace Strategies Of Black Feminist Organizations, Jazmine Walker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reproductive justice is a social justice movement based on black feminist principles that is also a direct response to women of color's invisibility within white mainstream feminist organizations and workplaces. This ethnographic case study of WomenUnited, a woman of color reproductive justice organization, demonstrates that a key difference between black feminist and white feminist workplace cultures is black workplace's centralization of and emphasis on their intersectional identities in their definitions of work and the ways they enact emotional labor. I find that identity within black feminist workplaces is managed differently as the organizations: (1) embrace alternative standards of beauty through …

Tzinacamoztoc, Possible Use Of A Lava Tube As A Zenithal Observatory Near Cantona Archaeological Site, Puebla, Mexico, Ramón Espinasa-Pereña, Ruth Diamant
KIP Monographs
An artificial structure was discovered under a natural skylight inside Grutas de Tzincacamóztoc, in the vicinity of the archaeological site of Cantona. The structure is made up of piled rocks, defining a pentagonal enclosure with a central mound. Detailed measurements and computer modeling allowed tracing of the sunbeam path projected on the structure and on the cave floor, particularly for dates of astronomical and/or Mesoamerican calendrical importance. This corroborates the possible prehispanic use of this site as a complex and sophisticated gnomon. Se descubrió una estructura artificial bajo un tragaluz natural en las Grutas de Tzinacamóztoc, cerca del sitio argueológico …

The El Gigante Rockshelter: Preliminary Observations On An Early To Late Holocene Occupation In Southern Honduras., Timothy E. Scheffler, Kenneth G. Hirth, George Hasemann
KIP Monographs
The El Gigante rockshelter in highland Honduras was occupied as early as 10,000 years B.P and provides information previously lacking about the earliest periods of Honduran and Central American prehistory. Three distinct cultural horizons were identified and dated at the site using conventional and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dates that correspond to the Early Archaic, the Middle Archaic, and the Formative to Classic periods. Dry conditions within the rockshelter resulted in excellent archaeological preservation across all time periods. Excavations documented a clear sequence of residential activity represented by well-defined cultural strata containing hearth and pit features as well as dense …

The Métis And Thirty Years Of Section 35: How Constitutional Protection For Métis Rights Has Led To The Loss Of The Rule Of Law, Jean Teillet
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper chronicles the inclusion of the Métis in section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, their battle for a seat in the Constitutional Conferences that followed and their litigation journeys since 1990. The paper examines the lethal combination of section 35, section 52 and the urgings of the Supreme Court of Canada that reconciliation is to be accomplished by negotiations. The negotiated agreements that result from their court “victories” have been implemented (or not) according to the shifting winds of provincial politics. Métis rights are governed not by laws, but by policies and guidelines that the Métis know nothing …

The Changing Role Of Sámi Women In Reindeer Herding Communities In Northern Norway And The 1970-1980s Women’S Resistance And Redefinition Movement, Marcie Kaye Bremmer
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Historically, different nations-states at different times have tried to claim authority over the Sámi in the circumpolar north. After the nation state borders were drawn in the 1700s and 1800s, separating Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland, Norway introduced a harsh and 1800s separating Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland, Norway introduced a harsh assimilation policy that lasted over a century. Cultural Darwinist views and national assimilationist legislation and social strategies chipped away at Sámi society and its identity as an indigenous people. Over time Sámi women found their accustomed social, economic, and political autonomy eroded. Post World War II, the emerging …
Beyond Priapus: A Call For A Feminist And/Or Queer Theory Archaeology Of Roman Masculinity And Phallic Iconography, Ashley J. Barnett
Beyond Priapus: A Call For A Feminist And/Or Queer Theory Archaeology Of Roman Masculinity And Phallic Iconography, Ashley J. Barnett
Nebraska Anthropologist
Phallic iconography is ubiquitous throughout the archaeology of the Roman world and has raised questions about sexuality in ancient Rome. Dominant modern Western discourses privilege heterosexual male frameworks which many not adequately correspond to ancient Roman culture. Thus, the application of Feminist and/or Queer theory may expand academic insight into not only Roman sexuality, but also into the power and politics of the Republican Period.
Justice In Context: Assessing Contextualism As An Approach To Justice, Michael Buckley
Justice In Context: Assessing Contextualism As An Approach To Justice, Michael Buckley
Publications and Research
Moral and political philosophers are increasingly using empirical data to inform their normative theories. This has sparked renewed interest into questions concerning the relationship between facts and principles. A recent attempt to frame these questions within a broader approach to normative theory comes from David Miller, who has on several occasions defended ‘contextualism’ as the best approach to justice. Miller argues that the context of distribution itself brings one or another political principle into play. This paper examines this claim. It considers several plausible strategies for carrying out Miller’s general project and argues that each strategy fails. Nevertheless, the author …
America Versus Westboro Baptist Church: The Legal Battle To Preserve Peace At The Funerals Of Fallen Soldiers, Kendra Suesz
America Versus Westboro Baptist Church: The Legal Battle To Preserve Peace At The Funerals Of Fallen Soldiers, Kendra Suesz
Nebraska Anthropologist
The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) has gained national attention over the past several years with their fierce protests at the fonerals of soldiers killed in action. American citizens outraged by the actions of the WBC pressured the lawmakers in 45 states to enact legislation curtailing the protesters' access to funerals. Claiming that the laws infringe upon their First Amendment rights, the WBC has challenged these legislations in court, and will continue to do so. The goal of this paper is to explain the strategies used by the WBC to spread their message, the response by lawmakers to try and combat …

Nebraska Anthropologist
There are not many student-run academic journals, and even fewer student-run anthropological journals. We are happy to provide a forum in which anthropologists and other similarly-interested students can present their interests and intellectual work. Anthropology is the study of humanity in all walks of life, and Nebraska Anthropologist is a small testament to what can be accomplished when a community works together.
This 27th anniversary volume would not have been possible without the guidance and support of the editors that have gone before us, notably Benjamin Grant Purzycki aDd all those whose work has instilled Nebraska Anthropologist with its quality …
